    We should do a drinking game on many times you said 40Gb is obsolete. Seriously, 40Gb is not obsolete. 25Gb is newer, but I've not seen anyone deploy it on a massive scale yet. It will be several years before it becomes mainstream. And 800ns latency is super low on uplinks, but 3.3us comes from serialization delay from using rj45 ports. You'll never see a low latency switch using copper rj45 ports for that reason. SFP+ is the way to go.

    Random note: "Jigga-watt" is just an older pronunciation of Gigawatt, it still means a billion watts. The really odd thing about it though is that in BTTF Doc Brown uses the older "Jigga" pronunciation in both 1985 and 1955, even though the term wasn't even created until the 60s and "Jigga" had died out years before 1985.

    Cool switch i just wish a switch like that which still has the standard that is usable by 10Gbps NICs was only around $500 on ebay. The $300ish ones have already sold out. Probably in part due to this video. I am sure someone needs the older tech version of it for their network as a entire network upgrade is expensive. The people who control the money in the company usually do not like it when the cost is several thousand per few years unless there is a direct benefit they can see.

After a bit of Googling, the PDF on Arista's site said "Typical power draw less than 6W per port" so a 48 port would be 288 watts? • @BattousaiHBr

    40gbps is not "obsolete". both SFP+ and QSFP+ are still very much widespread and still being produced and sold.
    sure, a lot of the higher end stuff is SFP28 and QSFP28, but that doesn't mean Q/SFP+ is antiquated.

    • @Level1Techs
      @Level1Techs  4 роки тому

      40gbps is actually eol in favor of 4 channel 25gbps hahaha 40gbps is 4x10gps which is pretty meh and not power friendly

    • @BattousaiHBr
      @BattousaiHBr 4 роки тому +1

      @@Level1Techs that's like saying USB 3 is obsolete and EOL because USB 3.2 exists.
      currently Q/SFP28 is more expensive (although granted, not by much).
      all manufacturers (yes including cisco) are still releasing new Q/SFP+ products across their lower end devices.
      SFP+ is definitely lower end, but not at all obsolete.

    • @Level1Techs
      @Level1Techs  4 роки тому

      The point was that companies still doling out obsolete 40gbpd qsfp+ gear are doing their customers a disservice because the set of standards for 10/25/100 gig are much more sane, and lower latency. You would have to use a 100gbps port on new gear to link it to your 40gbps gear which has been problematic for me in my experience. 40gbps is an old standard not perfectly compatible with new stuff and the recommendations for people with old stuff is going to be to break out 40gbps into 4x10gbps for the uplink instead of using qsfp+ stacking. It's a trash fire, in practice, on current equipment. Instead save yourself headache and spend slightly more so vendors like cisco don't sucker you into buying their old stock crap they had laying around....

    • @BattousaiHBr
      @BattousaiHBr 4 роки тому +1

      @@Level1Techs that is true of course.
      but the thing you're not taking into account is cost. SFP28 is still, unfortunately, more expensive. a 40gbps transceiver costs the same as a 25gbps one. unless you think you're going to actually use the 60gbps extra bandwidth, it might not be worth the extra cost for you.
      and you keep saying "old stuff". like i said, Q/SFP+ is still being manufactured and sold in 2020 quite broadly, it is not EOL.
      there's a reason if you check at fs.com, the most popular transceivers and cables are Q/SFP+. it is significantly cheaper.
      what you might say is that there's no upgrade path, which is correct (although the same is true for Q/SFP28 since bleeding edge stuff is now Q/SFP56 and beyond, which goes to 200gbps).

    • @Level1Techs
      @Level1Techs  4 роки тому

      There are consequences beyond the link speed you don't mention, like rdma. Don't buy new gear with eol fittings. Whatever you "save" on cost up front will cost headache down the line expecting things like low latency rdma forwarding to work properly. The older 10gbps/40gbps standards are not great and what's been done in newer gear to address flaws in the old standards leads to weird behavior. it's not worth my time to chase down that sort of stuff in "new" 40gbps equipment...

    Hi Wendell, thanks for making this video! I’m watched it over and over, as I’m at a lost as what to do for my work network. I run a video production company. Most of our files are 4K ProRes 4444 HQ files (these are huge). I have a super micro server running FreeNAS 11, with an Intel Optane 900p SLOG, 128 gb ram and lots of L2Cache NVMe cache (deciding what to do there). We’ve 48 hard disks so we should have a good amount of through put.
    I need to hook the server up to 4 macOS workstations for shared media editing directly from the server. I currently have Chelsio T62100 nics.
    I can buy this switch and connect the main workstations via QFSP+ or stick to 10bgps and buy a modern switch/router like a microtek. Is the 800 nano second latency a factor here? I can’t fingur out if the latency in a $300-$500 modern switch would actually be any lower. MikroTek doesn’t have that data, I talked to an engineer. Can I ask your source for the latency information?
    I want a blazing fast connection for all of the workstations, with no stutter or play head delay. Anyway, love the channel. - Patrick Wilcox, Colorways.

    • @patrickwilcox4630
      @patrickwilcox4630 4 роки тому

      @Level1Techs  4 роки тому +3

      The only switches that will have better latency start at around $ 1500 for a 16 port. If your workstations are 10 gig, then this switch will be decent. Note that optane is great for latency but if your file server has a 40 gig link you may need several optane for slog. Test with a pool consisting of spindles only. Big files/work hard. Then add the slog and retest writes to the pool. The retest with l2arc. You have a lot of work ahead of you. Be sure to enable autotune on freenas as it can. Help set some tubables for you for performance...

    Personally, I wouldn't buy an RJ45 switch for anything above 5G. For 10G, you want SFP+ ports so you can run fibre or direct attach copper for an order of magnitude better latency than even modern 10GBase-T.

    But what does that actually mean for your intranet? Cause your not getting throughput to an isp at that rate. Is this specifically for system to system transfers at your local network, and if so what kind of crazy network can you possibly have that requires 5!of them???

    It is really awesome that you are looking at Arista switches. They are pretty awesome. Also they are pretty darn reliable. They test every single switch that they sell.
    However, you are pronouncing 'Arista' wrong. Here is an example video so you can see how it is pronounced: m.ua-cam.com/video/JaTN70ufBww/v-deo.html

    its not the hardware . time and time again we see video card releases
    after 2-3 month driver update increase the fps by 10-20 % , look at
    DOOM a vulcan titles , without vulcan ON fps at 60-70 fps, with
    vulcan enabled 200 fps , did the hardware change NO , the hardware
    got different instructions . ever knowtist how your video cards get
    slower before new releases of new cards
