People were calling Brian a genius as early as 1964 because of the innovations in his music and arrangements with each new single and album. It's why in '65, heard here, Murray was goading him with "Brian, I'm a genius too."
Ok I couln't have asked for a better youtube documentary about this topic, love the humour, the rythm and the art is quite charming too, I'm eager for part 2!
I remember how big "Good Vibrations" was. It may have lost its shine over the years, but it was nothing like what anyone else was doing during that time.
Timeless Masterpiece. It's a like a 3:51 second opera. There are not songs to compare it to., it makes"Bohemian Rhapsody" "A Day in a life" and "Stairway to Heaven" seem pedestrian and dull. Maybe you need a better sound system?
@@ryanmccolloch4734Agreed! I'm 51-yr and with what is transpired since 1966, especially since the mid 1990s, it even sounds more magical to me! (I'm including innovators like Rush, Talking Heads, etc)
Man such a good overview, can't wait for more. Such engaging use of clips and historical articles, great editing too. Hope you take off, best Smile recap I've seen. Can't wait for more.
The Beach Boys lacked a rock sensibility in the mid to late sixties. The Smile project wasn't the way forward. In 1966/67, Cream and Jimi Hendrix were the thing of the moment. The Beatles had "electricity". Simples!
The album scene of 1966 and 1967 resembled a gigantic game of "Can You Top This?" which The Beatles won with "Sgt. Pepper." If Brian Wilson had not crashed and burned, it might have been all different.
Other than that one 'glitch', I thoroughly enjoyed this well-researched, well-produced video. At the time of Pet Sounds' release, though I loved "Good Vibrations", I wasn't convinced to buy the album. I DID buy "Smiley Smile" and "Wild Honey", though, and they convinced me to look backward at their catalog. I hope Van Dyke Parks has some attention in the second part. He became a top favorite of mine over the years.
Yeah...Brian Wilson totally dropped the ball on this one. Smile could have been a masterwork. But all n all...i do believe Sunflower is their greatest album
I think Smile is a testament to untreated mental health disorders and should be a lesson to all decision makers who seek to devalue the importance of mental healthcare. When confronted with such a naysayer, just say “Smile.”
@@SMITTYWUZHEER Ya right. Only on the deaf charts. Most of it was a waste of the Wrecking Crews time and talent. Outside of Heros & Villians and Surfs Up, it was fatuous pseudo blubber.
Smile lacks variations in musical dynamics and timbre. All of the songs pretty much have the same dynamics and timbre. It could not have become the same phenomenon that Sgt. Pepper became.
On the best day the Beach Boys ever had they were never ever in the same class as The Beatles. They were a cool singles band and honestly not much more.
I may say that's ignorant. I was a Beatles fan growing up but while they were best at staying relevant the Beach Boys had an extensive and fascinating catalog. If you'd like to change your perspective give their late 60s and early 70s albums a listen. Not as groundbreaking as Pet Sounds or Smile Sessions but great music altogether
Interesting channel. You've made some funny stuff back in the day and now decide to to a video on SMiLE. Great video btw, the editing is nice and you share lots of cool facts

Not even halfway through but oh my god, this is incredible. Please keep this up, this is the exact treatment an album like SMiLE deserves.

I think it still holds up today for the most part.

Brian Wilson vs The Beatles.

Who was Tim Ponni?

"This Whole World" was an epiphany for me - that one song brought me back to the Beach Boys' fold.
🔥🔥🔥
I prefer Sgt Pepper but I love this album and Pet Sounds
This is your magnum opus
Timpani = "TIM-puh-nee."
very based video
It's far superior to Pepper and would be the album we remember as fondly.
Yeah, in one of the clips, you can see a fan reach for Mike Love and clearly makes off with a lock of hat.
Having heard the reimagined Smile or whatever it is, Smile never would have been equal to either Revolver or Pepper.
It would’ve wiped out pepper by a landslide or at least combat pepper in the charts

Should really learn how to pronounce "timpani".
Yeah, TIMP-uh-nee, not tim-PAH-nee! Excellent research and editing, but that mispronunciation really threw me off.
@@petehealy9819 Can these AI voices be corrected/edited? There must be a way, and the creators should 'proofhear' the thing before releasing it.

Funny how the Beatles themselves would have never agreed with you.

Phil Spector 's wall of sound was crap, and lazy and ruined the beach boys.
I disagree. Brian Wilson did Phil Spector's Wall of Sound better than Phil Spector did, and it enhanced the music unlike Phil Spector.
At least listen to Pet Sounds instrumentals without the vocals. Put on headphones and sit in a dark room.
They were great until they went pycodelic then they the fell out of popularity.
GV must have seemed like music from another planet in '66. Just an amazing track
