With Pet Sounds and Good Vibrations, they have achieved the ultimate artistic and commercial triumph, acclaimed masterpieces selling in the multiples of millions. The Beach Boys lacked a rock sensibility in the mid to late sixties. The Smile project wasn't the way forward. In 1966/67, Cream and Jimi Hendrix were the thing of the moment. The Beatles had "electricity". Simples!

The album scene of 1966 and 1967 resembled a gigantic game of "Can You Top This?" which The Beatles won with "Sgt. Pepper." If Brian Wilson had not crashed and burned, it might have been all different.

Other than that one 'glitch', I thoroughly enjoyed this well-researched, well-produced video. At the time of Pet Sounds' release, though I loved "Good Vibrations", I wasn't convinced to buy the album. I DID buy "Smiley Smile" and "Wild Honey", though, and they convinced me to look backward at their catalog. I hope Van Dyke Parks has some attention in the second part. He became a top favorite of mine over the years.

People were calling Brian a genius as early as 1964 because of the innovations in his music and arrangements with each new single and album. It's why in '65, heard here, Murray was goading him with "Brian, I'm a genius too."

I think the version on this platform, an AI thing called "DAE LIMS" is the most definitive mix I've heard as of yet. Whoever the creator is overdubbed harmony vocals on I Wanna Be Around which really completes it. Nice stuff, if you want to give it a listen .ua-cam.com/video/n7W_2JS12CY/v-deo.htmlsi=Yhxw4LIpXOzQUjl5

@@petehealy9819 Can these AI voices be corrected/edited? There must be a way, and the creators should 'proofhear' the thing before releasing it.

On the best day the Beach Boys ever had they were never ever in the same class as The Beatles. They were a cool singles band and honestly not much more.

I may say that's ignorant. I was a Beatles fan growing up but while they were best at staying relevant the Beach Boys had an extensive and fascinating catalog. If you'd like to change your perspective give their late 60s and early 70s albums a listen. Not as groundbreaking as Pet Sounds or Smile Sessions but great music altogether

Smile lacks variations in musical dynamics and timbre. All of the songs pretty much have the same dynamics and timbre. It could not have become the same phenomenon that Sgt. Pepper became.

I think Smile is a testament to untreated mental health disorders and should be a lesson to all decision makers who seek to devalue the importance of mental healthcare. When confronted with such a naysayer, just say “Smile.”

Timeless Masterpiece. It's a like a 3:51 second opera. There are not songs to compare it to., it makes"Bohemian Rhapsody" "A Day in a life" and "Stairway to Heaven" seem pedestrian and dull. Maybe you need a better sound system?
