gym shoe I agree, the Beatles all came from not necessarily poor environments, but they definitely lived very hard-scrabble. They toured seedy German clubs for two years and didn’t really make it that big until four years after they changed their name to the Beatles. The Beach Boys saw almost instant success. It was hard for them to change the formula when the formula was what launched them to sky high success very early on.
Here's what I think: Paul felt early on he'd "won", and knew Brian was struggling mentally. He acted like a good winner, and rather than pushing Wilson, perhaps knowing it would break him, he raised him to his own level, perhaps saving Brian's life in the process. Who knows if Paul would've been as graceful hadn't he come out on top -- but he saw a person, beyond the profession, and it's a sign of great empathy to not revel when someone else is suffering.

@@jamesb.9472 agreed... not true. Although you can cherry pick through interviews of paul or brian saying there was a rivalry... for paul, it was only one album, pet sounds, that really struck him. Besides that, i've never heard lennon or harrison mention the beach boys (although I'm sure they were fans). The beach boys were doing a bit of catch up in the 60's and trying to stay relevant. If not for the beatles and getting away from the whole surf thing, they probably wouldn't have lasted past '65. And certainly pet sounds wouldn't have been a thing.
Well, it would have existed, we just wouldn't have heard of it. These musicians got our ear by following the controllers agenda, namely, pushing agendas on the public. The music is lovely, but without Paul always holding goats, or the Tavistock Institutes pushing of the Beatles, or Lennon's globalism, or Alister Crowley appearing on the cover for Sgt. Pepper, we just wouldn't have heard these tunes. @@kaywaters4427 Not insult the best measure for success, but fanship wasn't the rivalry they were referring to. Granted the Stones music was equal to, and sometimes better than both the Beach Boys and the Beatles, but so was The Who, namely Pete Townshend's song writing brilliance and creation of the Rock Opera. Pete pulled it off with the massive rock sound of electric guitar through vacuum tube 100 watt Marshall Stacks. After all, he did invent the big 8 12" speaker cabinet for these guitar amps. Although these first big Marshall's were just one tall cabinet until the roadies complained of back trouble, so they it cut into an upper 4 and lower 4 speaker cabs stacked.

Murry Wilson was the reason that the early Beach Boys music was monaural. Brian is deaf in one ear, thanks to Murry. Think just how much better The Beach Boys would have been, without Murry and Mikey! steve
On that I agree....it's a great song....and I never want to take anything away from the Beach Boys but they and all band even the stones do not compare to the Beatles!!!!!
I want to use inter-dimensional travel to find the alternate timeline where Brian Wilson didn't break down; where the Beatles and the Beach boys continued their album-topping rivalry all the way through the 60s... can you imagine?!
The fact is the Beatles were never in competition with the Stones, they were in competition with Brian Wilson. George Martin talked about it. The Beatles never saw the Stones as a completer. It was always the genius Brian.
I dont think there is any comparison, and Pet Sounds is one of the most over-rated records ever. Theres only 2 or 3 good songs on the album. The Beach Boys invented a new sound, a very original sound, but all their songs sounded similar, that surfing beach boy sound. The Beatles evolved with every record, with different sounds , and they got better, almost every song on their albums was good. By 1967 Brian fried his brain with drugs and it was pretty much over for them. Beatles have a much bigger catalog of hit songs, and classics. Beach Boys deserve credit for their original unique sound but they didnt evolve past that sound and it sounded dated by the late 60's. Just my opinion though.
Cowboy Luke well when you’ve got three McCartney like people who are obsessed with hits, you’re bound to have your creativity stunted which is the only reason the beach boys couldn’t go higher and brian didn’t reach his full potential
@@rafaelsantosx Well "too fragile" to me would be an oversimplification, it was more a culmination of factors. Foremost, Brian Wilson was a bona fide genius, and with great intellect one assumes must come with a lot of internal mental issues. Next, Brian had an absolutely terrible and abusive childhood, and his father was verbally abusive throughout his adolescence into adulthood-- pair that with the abuse and lack of support from fellow bandmates. And then of course, lastly Brian had to deal with a manipulative and abusive psychiatrist, alongside his greatest period of psychedelic abuse. So "fragile" sure, but with a multitude of factors far outside of his control.
The Beach Boys late-60s/early-70s period is actually really underrated. Friends, 2020, Sunflower, Surf's Up all had their moments. Nothing like Pet Sounds, obviously...
The BB did about 7-8 albums without Wilson. For me it really shows. Some of the BB music is too bland for me and overdone. The best of the BB is truly stunning though. If Brian hadn't gotten so sick then they would of written many more great songs and taken some of the glory away from the Beatles. Having said that the Beatles never have been nor never will be overrated. If anything they are a little underrated because their music is so damn sophisticated even from their very early stuff. I have spoken to many classically trained musicians what they truly think and they say they were incredible. They also told me when asked they could never write anything so good.

What are the odds that Paul and Brian, the composers of the most beautiful melodies of 20th century pop music, were both born within 2 days of each other? (Paul on 06/18/42, Brian on 06/20/42.) That amazing week changed pop music forever.

I disagree with that assessment. And here's Wikipedia on the subject: "As a solo artist, Wilson reinterpreted Smile for concert performances in 2004, followed by an album Brian Wilson Presents Smile, which he said differed substantially from his original concept.[13] In 2011, The Smile Sessions was released containing an approximation of what the original Smile might have sounded like." All we've gotten is a re-creation by a much older and more damaged Brian Wilson. Smiley Smile is probably closer to the original intention, in my view. But it's still just a rough outline.
@@aia94 Did I say it was? The Wikipedia quote I posted was about the version of Smile that was released by Brian Wilson in 2004. He himself said it was different than his original intention.
Paul is such an amazing man. I love that he still treats Brian so well. He never forgot where he came from and always gives respect where it's due. Considering he was in one of the best bands of all time - his ego is incredibly small, and the fact he still talks about how great a composer Brian was speaks volumes.
The Beach Boys could deliver perfect harmonies in and out of the studio. Brian Wilson is the mastermind behind much of the beach boy success. Without pet sounds they would’ve stayed as a preppy pop California band.
This was lovely Jeffrey. I'm a film historian, musician, and I lived through that period. I agree with you 100%....very insightful for someone your age.
I like the beach boys but the mere fact that every successful band feels obliged to compare themselves to the Beatles is proof enough that the Beatles are the bench mark which all are measured by. They even gave away great songs!
The biggest difference I see between Brian and Paul is that Paul seemed to have a little more self-control when it came to experimenting with "substances," whereas Brian seemed to completely self-destruct. (There was no "Gene Landy" needed to "rescue" Paul...or was there? If so, we never heard anything.) Maybe we should also look at the intra-band conflicts to shed further light: Paul vs.John, and Brian vs. Mikey.
but it wasn't the experimentation, you need to read up on what an asshole belligerent child beater Brian's father was... We're talking Joe Jackson type asshole: www.theguardian.com/music/2018/jun/27/joe-jackson-one-of-the-most-monstrous-fathers-in-pop
Nope. Brian had and incredibly serious mental condition and years of abuse, he was searching for something to dull his pain in a time when there was nearly no real help for mental illness
Almost every video on the BB involves the Beatles but the same isn't true of the Beatles videos. People who have to make a comparison or feel they have to defend their team are so silly. I love them both and thank god they existed. Their music has inspired me to learn music theory, play guitar and now piano. They sound completely different yet the guy making this video has to say stupid shit regarding his own countries band the BB. Why...? When you understand music theory you can hear what is great about both. They both wrote the finest songs for the 20th century by a long way for popular music and the output from the Beatles was staggering (300 songs 8yrs) If Brian Wilson had not been so ill with depression, anxiety and all that he would of written many more songs too and this is something I feel a little cheated out of because that would of been wonderful. Nevertheless we have what we have and the worlds a much more beautiful place because of it. I must say though that Revolver is my fav album but if SGT Peppers had Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane on it as they were intended then that would of been just as great.
my favorite part is that Brian poured everything he had into making an album better than rubber soul but just ended up inspiring the beatles to get even better than they already were
And still made an album that is still considered one if not the best album of all time rivaling the Beatle's best if you're going to go out at least go out with a bang
Johnny Ramone wanted his band to be the next Beatles (seriously), but my favorite description of them was from a writer in either Rolling Stone or Creem which read: "The Ramones sound like The Beach Boys would have if the Wilson brothers had grown up in the Bowery instead of Southern California."
Really excellent video. An important objective difference that was pointed out is that Brian did everything, songwriting, producing, arranging, whereas The Beatles were a 3-headed monster, Lennon, McCartney, Martin. When one needed musical assistance, the others were there to help. Who did Brian have to turn to that was the equivalent of the Beatles team. And on top of that, George Harrison came into his own as a song writer.
Paul Vs Brian as composers of music are both incredible, Paul had the advantage of always having proper support. First from the Beatles, and then from Linda and Denny Laine while Brian Wilson was always told “no” by the other people in his life.
I remembered Brian Wilson and his mates were driving when they heard the latest Sgt. pepper on the radio. He then stopped the car by the road side, turned to his band mates and said, 'we are done.'
The advantages of the Beatles is that they have all contributed their individual skills to their songs plus the active participation of their well schooled musician producer, George Martin. They're genius in their respective field of interest. Hence, the production of a couple of great music with sophisticated vocal and instrumental arrangements. No wonder, they have outsmarted all their contemporaries at the time.
psychlos21 The Beach Boys’ music, especially early on, can be a bit schlocky. But what separates the two is that the Beatles was a combined effort of four or five men. The Beach Boys and their masterpieces were almost completely Brian Wilson.
Well done. Thanks for this video. It's really impossible to measure influence, impact, importance...but as a die-hard, near-obsessive Brian Wilson fan I have no problem acknowledging that the overall significance of the Beatles outweighs that of the BBs/BW. They were highly productive and relevant far longer, and their COOL factor enabled them to profoundly impact R&R. My mentors almost to a person cite the Beatles' appearance on Ed Sullivan as a seminal experience. We can never count how many musicians were spawned from that singular performance. There is no equivalent with the BBs. Both bands impacted tremendously on an artistic, esoteric level, but the Beatles had an equal if not greater impact at the pop level for many years. However, the one area where Brian Wilson stands head and shoulders above all others is the sheer magnitude of his individual achievement. Considering Brian's non-combative personality and insecurities, it boggles the mind that he accomplished PS. Not only was Brian solely responsible for the massive creative output, but he very literally had to *fight* for his vision. The man had almost ZERO support from the very people he most wanted to please! This is the part of the story I just cannot reconcile. How Brian found the fortitude to push all this through on his own, with the record company and Mike Love discouraging him just defies belief. The Beatles had every advantage. Brian had few. Yet Brian still equaled the height of artistic expression if not the breadth and duration.
This video is absolutely brilliant. I'd love for millions of people to see it, as a proper, true education into two of the greatest songwriters to have ever lived. Thanks for the vid man, I really loved it!
This is the best documentary/video I’ve seen on UA-cam in an long time. It wasn’t just all facts and history. It had heart and soul especially when it came to telling Brian’s story. Fine job.
I grew up with the Beach Boys, also was raised in Redondo Beach where Brian Wilson and others spent a lot of time. That being said, The Beatles are untouchable. No musical artist comes close.
Thank you Jeffrey for this interesting video. It seems to me that Pauls regular and loving acknowledgement of Brian and his music, has to have made an important contribution to Brians healing, and him getting back to his music. Also encouraging the music world to take Brian seriously again. Such a lovely story.
To really understand The Beach Boys, of course you need to know the fun in the sun songs, Pet sounds and good vibrations but you also need to know the many albums that are sadly not as well known like Friends, Smiley smile, wild honey, 20/20, sunflower, surfs up, Holland, Carl and the passions ‘so tough’, ‘love you’, their self titled album and their latest album. Also the smile sessions. Overall The Beach Boys were more or less on par with the Beatles in the 60’s and continued making fantastic albums decades after the Beatles broke up. And pet sounds and smile two masterpieces that in my opinion top sgt pepper, abbey road and the white album any day. Even in the early days I still prefer The Beach Boys’ music personally because of their harmonies which the Beatles rarely had. You can’t beat Brian’s falsetto. Overall, the Beatles are really amazing but I prefer The Beach Boys personally.
Not fair comparing anyone to the Beatles. Beatles were a universe beyond other bands. Most musicians admit this now, that the Beatles music still as popular and fresh as the day it was releas
I agree with James the Beach Boys might have had more appeal in their own time period of the 60s but the appeal of Beatles music transcends the 60s so much so that they are millions of people worldwide who still listen to it today.

If you look at Lennons solo career, he had some bangers, sure. But during that time Paul made a band and went on tour with a complete different sound and they fucking rocked. John went on tour with Yoko and played shit from his solo albums with musicians I can't name. I can't tell you who was in George's band or Ringo's band. Paul had Denny Lane, Jimmy McCulloch, a fucking brass section featuring Thaddeus Lewis. A band that ripped through the 70s, went platinum and then Paul got caught up in Japan with a little pot and the band split. Paul went on to collab with Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Steve Miller, Carl Perkins and so many more artists in just the 80s alone. Paul McCartney has stayed relevant. Even his shit in the 2000s. Several SNL appearances, Grammy awards, late night shows, still rocking in 2020 has to make him the greatest musician in history and modern day rap artists get it and pay respects to the legend himself. You should too.
My two favorite bands are The Beach Boys and The Beatles, in that order. Along with Motown records, to me there is no better, more beautiful music in the world. Brian Wilson is an absolute musical genius of epic proportions and Lennon/McCartney (and Harrison) are some of the finest songwriters this world has ever seen. To listen to each band's best music is to almost touch the sky.
What I like about this rivalry between Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson is that it is friendly. They admire and respect each other. Brian admits to being blown away by "Rubber Soul" and Paul praises "Pet Sounds" as an inspiration for "Sgt Pepper." You can be competitors and still be gentlemen about it. This should be a lesson to other artists.
Excellent work once again, Jeffery. Can't explain just how important your video essays are to exposing the brilliance of Brian Wilson. You clearly do your research and your script is written very well. I look forward to future video essays you make on other artists.
The thing I like about the whole Beatles vs. Beach Boys thing, was that it was a healthy rivalry. I mean, it was a "rivalry" of sorts, because there was still competitiveness, and they *were* trying to outdo each other, but at the same time, unlike a lot of other band rivalries, there was no shortage of humility. They were fans of one another, and their works fueled one another to give us popular music history... seems more like a collaboration to me.
MAde my day to see Ronnie Wood (a Rolling stone) & Paul McCartney ( a Beatle) talking about Brian...a Real Beach Boy. So much love & fire they've brought to our world.

Beautiful video ! Thank you for this treat !! Excellent storytelling and really good vibrations :)
Beach boys were homegrown. Beatles were international. My friend loved the Beach boys in,school and I was a beatles fan...we never wondered who was best. We just loved our music!
Everybody reacted to the Beatles. They were it. Then there was everyone else. They kept on and on. Sometimes one or another would tie then in one small slice of something. But they were the tsunami. You had to be there and have ears when it all came down. They were always ahead. Always.
Very wise of you to add "and have ears"--some people lacked the ability to listen intelligently and caringly...and missed out on so much...so very much. By the way, your post reminds me of the title of (Sir) George Martin's memoirs: All You Need Is Ears. :-)
Also, the Beatles werealways evolving. Beatles fans pretty much saw the BB as derivative, boring and square. It probably wasn't a fair assessment, or based on totally on the music.. The Hawaiian shirts and white pants had a part to play, lol. They were a little too Chad and Jeremy.
The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson are my religion, they will remain so till the day I day and hopefully in heaven too! But please, don't underestimate the Beatles ... They changed the world. They made everyone better. They made everyone reach to be just that bit better, and reach for uncharted heights. The world would be a bleaker place - even you would not be the same person - without them. If you truly try understand what happened in 1963 you would know that the Beatles were more than just a musical gift.
Really great video! When Mick Jaggar introduces The Beatles in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he mentions a similar rivalry but one also filled with love, respect, and inspiration.
The competition between the two bands wasn't motivated by money, at all. The competition was purely centered around music. They both pushed each other to be maximum in their creativity. Brian Wilson loved Rubber Soul and McCartney heard Pet Sounds and was blown away; and proceeded to grind Pepper. The funny thing is most folks don't know that Wilson and McCartney loved each others' music. Pet Sounds is on equal par with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and vice versa. If one reads some different articles on Paul, he actually has Pet Sounds in his playlist.
While I think you make some good points, let's not forget that before Sgt. Pepper, The Beatles gave us Revolver. I would never for a moment discount the importance of SPLHCB, I *personally* prefer Revolver (which I realize puts me in a minority).
The Beatles vs The Beach Boys was the epitome of “healthy competition.” The result was great music for us.

They inspired each other to create great music, everybody wins.
if this rivalry dint exist, some of the best songs in history would have never existed.
Yep and not just Beatle or Beach Boys songs either but ALL other bands/singers since trying to reach/compete with their standard
Brian it didn’t exist AT ALL in the UK - it was all Beatles v Stones.
I cover this music industry trend in my song about Bob Dylan, lyric video linked here. to give you an idea of what I mean.
ua-cam.com/video/3xIsStKQsCw/v-deo.html
I wasn't expecting that speech by Macca at the ending. Shit, I cried.
That must have been a beautiful moment for Brian and he deserves it very much.

The fact is the Beatles were never in competition with the Stones, they were in competition with Brian Wilson. George Martin talked about it. The Beatles never saw the Stones as a completer. It was always the genius Brian.
Yeah, that's crap. Other than McCartney, the rest of the Beatles would hardly have even given a toss about Wilson.

@@aliceshaw8265 They all did a lot of drugs, the problem was that Brian's mind was too fragile, I guess.
@@rafaelsantosx his childhood and underlying mental illness didn't help

@bobshenix thank you very much sir for this very true enlightening post
The BB did about 7-8 albums without Wilson. For me it really shows. Some of the BB music is too bland for me and overdone. The best of the BB is truly stunning though. If Brian hadn't gotten so sick then they would of written many more great songs and taken some of the glory away from the Beatles. Having said that the Beatles never have been nor never will be overrated. If anything they are a little underrated because their music is so damn sophisticated even from their very early stuff.
I have spoken to many classically trained musicians what they truly think and they say they were incredible. They also told me when asked they could never write anything so good.

SMiLE was re-recorded with Sir Brian's awesome band EXACTLY the way he intended it to be.
Oh & my top two albums of all-time are Pet Sounds & SMiLE.
I disagree with that assessment. And here's Wikipedia on the subject:
"As a solo artist, Wilson reinterpreted Smile for concert performances in 2004, followed by an album Brian Wilson Presents Smile, which he said differed substantially from his original concept.[13] In 2011, The Smile Sessions was released containing an approximation of what the original Smile might have sounded like."
All we've gotten is a re-creation by a much older and more damaged Brian Wilson. Smiley Smile is probably closer to the original intention, in my view. But it's still just a rough outline.
Smiley Smile is not SMiLE. Don't even compare the two.

Great video! Sucks about changing the music, but you still brought your point across

Cannot compare the two groups. ..at all. It's like apples and oranges. Both great, both different, both musical genius!
@@allanaba8237 Agree. The Beatles are the greatest band of all time. Every generation appreciates their music.
psychlos21 The Beach Boys’ music, especially early on, can be a bit schlocky. But what separates the two is that the Beatles was a combined effort of four or five men. The Beach Boys and their masterpieces were almost completely Brian Wilson.

@Shoegame Crazy That's why they got bored, and made rubber soul
That's what draws me to the beach boys more than the Beatles brian was the underdog were as Paul John George and ringo were on top of the world

All them 60s bands were good friends
MAde my day to see Ronnie Wood (a Rolling stone) & Paul McCartney ( a Beatle) talking about Brian...a Real Beach Boy. So much love & fire they've brought to our world.

Beach boys were homegrown. Beatles were international. My friend loved the Beach boys in,school and I was a beatles fan...we never wondered who was best. We just loved our music!
More than a rivalry, it was like the most elegant tennis match, where each band return the service in a more and more intelligent way.
This is a great piece of video edition, narration style and research
Same here.
Thanks for all the Beach Boys/Brian Wilson content you've created. Really well done.
Brian was "blown" away too with Rubber Soul. Nice try in making Brian looking like the superior one.
Sgt. Pepper is superior and yes, we all know that. He even bought the album for his grandkids. Again, nice try.
While I think you make some good points, let's not forget that before Sgt. Pepper, The Beatles gave us Revolver. I would never for a moment discount the importance of SPLHCB, I *personally* prefer Revolver (which I realize puts me in a minority).
@@ellynmacgregor8210 Not really sure if that is a majority POV...for me, I love Sgt. Peppers, but maybe love Revolver a bit more.
I am insanely grateful you make videos like this
In my book Brian was the only one back then, who could compete with the Beatles. My two all time favourite bands.
It was either John or Paul that said Brian Wilson was the only one who intimidated them as far as competing with them.
Most likely, it was Paul.
Music&Arts Haltern Carl was far more talented, vocally and on strings, keys, drums. Brian wrote the MUSIC. Always needed a collaborator, lyrically.
Smile would be right up there with Dark Side of the Moon had it been released, I was totally blown away with it, incredible
Once again Jeffrey.... Great job! You're gifted at doing great documentaries, for sure.
Paul McCartney is such a class act. Great video
