How to Create an EZdrummer Track for Guitar Practice and Songwriting
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- This video is going to show you how easy and fast you can create a simple drum track using Toontrack's EZdrummer.
In fact, you can use this method with any drum program, drums machine, or just by using the loops that come with your DAW.
Oh, and I also write a song right in front of you!!
Now, you guys know that I'm an advocate of using a real drummer for your professional releases. But drum programs like EZdrummer come in really handy for these 3 reasons...
1 - Practicing guitar (it's so much more motivating to play guitar along with drums than a click track...or than playing with no tempo!)
2 - Songwriting, which was clearly demonstrated how quickly you can do this!
3 - Using a drum program or drum loops is also a great way to share your idea with your drummer so that he/she has a reference point
I truly hope this video helps you! Please give it a thumbs up, share it, and make sure you're subscribed to this channel!
Keep it Metal,
Jason

Chuuuuu that chorus riff is 🔥
🤘
I write the same way. It is a great tool. It’s also the first drummer to show up on time and not be drunk.
Lol...yeah this one's always there for you!
Wow ! I also use EZ Drummer and I write exactly as you do, I always almost start with drums and work from there up. I wanted to say to you if you were flying blind writing a song that was absolutely an amazing song ! Totally had a Killswitch Engage feel to it, I was very impressed.
What I’d love to know is I believe you quickly mentioned you use AmpliTube as a VST-3 plug in for your amp/speaker/effects etc. I’d love to know what your setup looks like as your tone was awesome as well. I’m 50/50 if I’m in my home studio I use high gain amps like a Diezel or, an old School Orange Thunderverb 200 or finally a Fender Metal Head. That said I run a real 4,000 sq/ft professional studio, the only difference is I run everyone through one of a few pedals, a Horizon Apex preamp/noise gate and if we go direct it also has cab simulation. I find the Maxon 808OD to be a great pedal on its own or, stacked, finally the famous Klon. Now I always give the option of going direct or, throwing a SM-57 and mjc’ing a cabinet and using the onboard preamp and tone be it distorted or, clean and then reamping the final product. I have at least 15-20 heads and speaker combinations, so I have a lot to offer.
I apologize I got way off topic ! Bottom line and I use EZD aka Toon Tracks a bit differently, your method is solid ! I usually use the “style” option then the tempo, and finally the time signature which is typically 4/4 or, 6/8 everything else we do exactly the same way. Great video wouldn’t have written a novel if I wasn’t really hyped over your artistry I’m really blessed that I came across you and your channel.
Thanks for sharing this. Yeah, EZ Drummer has been great for writing ideas and doing stuff for UA-cam and social.
As far as plugins for amps, the latest I've used (and bought) is this: ua-cam.com/video/g177NpWAL88/v-deo.html
Very helpful, thanks!
🤘
Very cool man. Thanks for the clip. I"m gonna give EZ Drummer a try.
It's a great writing and practicing tool!
Great vid!!! Thanks and subscribed!
Thank you! Here’s my latest video on drums: ua-cam.com/video/0wouUXGBO_A/v-deo.htmlsi=nbTs7ZfbEontm9Fo
Ok seriously I was expecting to hear Rob Halford come in singing when you played that verse. That totally sounds like Priest! Awesome riff dude!
I LOVE some Halford!!
Cool video man 😎 Huge fan of toontrack stuff and especially ezdrummer and metal machine. One kind of “cheating” way to get more drum loops is to download some tabs and export them as midi from guitar pro and use that to build up your loop library if you are in need of more!
Vafa Mottahedin Yeah Metal Machine is great and I also have the Death Metal pack. Those combined I’m able to give my drummer a better idea of what I’m looking for on each song. Of course I always tell him to play what sounds best to his ears but the tracks I give him as a reference comes in handy.
I’m loving this guitar pro idea… definitely going to mess around with that.
Cool Man!!. Very interesting and useful video, and awesome improvisation song dude.
Regards from Spain
Xarly ros thank you and glad this helped!
Simple and to the point . Great Tutorial. Nice guitar sound also.
Cheers My friend.
Thank you and glad this helped!
Awesome. That tone too man is el Diablo Rojo! ❤
🤘
Quick, concise, and to-the-point. Also, great riffage.
Thank you, Jason!!! I may give this a try.
🤘
Very nice, bro. I’m looking into getting a sound card and some kind of drum tool, and this seems like a great way to start learning. Thanks 🙏👍
🤘
thanks man, you showed me the path and I appreciate it! it can be even easier as a practice tool, i just combined a couple tracks by dragging to the bottom, exported as a .wav and played it through anytune (you can use any wav player) and was on my way in under 5 minutes with a nice backing track. 🙏
🤘🤘🤘
That's exactly How I compose my songs EZ Drummer 2 for keeping the time and coming up with riff ideas then I add rhythm tracks , Bass ( Just got the new EZ Bass by Toontracks and I just added EZ Keys too...
Here's a song I came up with last night using those... soundcloud.com/user-73518844/the-virus
robmlisanti yeah it’s perfect for ideas. I actually play bass as well so I don’t use anything for that
@@jasonstallworth have you ever thought of picking up drums? I bought a set from Sweetwater. I'm paying 50 a month for the next 2 years but it's been awesome watching UA-cam drummers like 66samus and trying to learn.
After the drums are paid I'm wanting to put together a small home studio. You were the inspiration for that man.
@@insertmetalusernamehere man that’s awesome to hear about your studio. I haven’t touched a drum set in decades!
I needed this for sure, thanks for sharing this lesson man. WIll surely use it in my playing
Yeah dude this really helps with songwriting...you'll come up with a ton of ideas
Kudos Jason, very helpful videos. Keep it up!
Dude, so glad this was helpful!!
Nice video bro. Help me a lot with my guitar playing and keep motivate me to play metal guitar.. maybe you can make a video how to practice metal guitar riff using drum tracks. That's will help me alot because i struggling to play with tempo. So boring just practice with metronome
🤘
Hi. Awesome stuff.
🙏 🤘
Hi Jason, Great job good demo , sound of drums realistic. That's a lot better and quicker then tapping in all the beats of different drums can get monotonous cheers Les.
🙏 🤘
Just started first song project. Battling the song creator in EZD2 I used mostly the same grouping of loops from metal pack for intro, verse, chorus but then used a breakdown and some fills from another and they don't seem to match. Another problem I hit is the song structure doesn't keep the loops I chose it goes to other loops I guess it thinks fits. It looks like I need to maybe find one loop. get the timing / quantize / beat calculated whatever then let it find matching loops for other parts of the arrangement? This is all frustrating for an old dude like me but I'm hanging in there lol.> Be easier if I was just a drummer and could record my own stuff LOL.. Trying to get my drummer buddy to get into doing that but we're all old metalheads with learning to do lol
I've never used the song creator thing! Lol...I just find a loop I like and drag into a track!
@@jasonstallworth after a couple days now using it I think I like that feature lol
@@themetalghost I need to learn how to use it!! lol
Nice playing
🙏 🤘
I love the toontrack stuff, i use drummer and EZmix, i like composing a cool sounding drumtrack, guitar in hand to see if parts fit and then write to the drums. When im happy with a track ill send it to a drummer friend and hell record real drums. Hoping to release a 6 song E.P within the coming 12 months.
The Faceless Toontrack is definitely easy to use and comes in quite handy! Keep us all updated on your progress!
I am currently learning how to use drum programs better to create better drum lines.... getting great is not something that happens over night... that’s for sure... this lesson helped vary much
Glad this helped dude!
There aren't too many videos of guitarists learning how to play to along to drum tracks. Could you consider putting something together in the future? I've played for years, but don't feel I can sync up with the metro or my ex drummer 2, I know the key is listening to the key beat
Dude, I actually have one video you can play along with the backing tracks here: ua-cam.com/video/Sg_uVXRI_Bg/v-deo.html
Very cool!!
Tasty riffs as well!!
Are the patterns made is of separate samples?
Can say move the snare or kick?
Good video. Thank you for making it
Yes, you can do all of that but I just use the loops they have and keep things simple but I may go in an add an extra kick or cymbal here and there
Cool vid. Good job.
Glad you enjoyed it
You are amazing. Thank you.
🙏🏻🤘
New sub to the channel. This is a sick video bro. Thanks so much for making it.
Thank you for the sub!!
Also, be sure to grab my free practice guide that give my subs here: www.jasonstallworth.com/guitarist/
I’ve done this for years started with Alesis SR 16 😀 Great launches 🚀 for songwriters
Gene Hartwig oh wow dude I had that same drum machine back in the day!!
Jason Stallworth I still got it that thing was a pain in the program but I did it anyways to make a whole song couple of them
now that I’ve had easy drummer and gotten used to it and more studio equipment that’s what I’ve been using
Thanks a lot! 🤘🏻😎
🤘
Can you sequence an entire song in EZDrummer and export it to a mini-studio? For example, I have a Tascam 24 track. Can I create my song in EZ Drummer and import the stereo wav file into tracks 1 and 2 on my 24 track? Thanks!
I’ve never don’t that but I’m sure you can, and that’s a great method! I essentially recorded the same way back in the 90s using an Alesia drum machine with a Fostex DMT8…so long ago!
A drummer is what I have been missing for 2 years. This looks like a perfect option rather than trying to create drums in Cakewalk. I write a lot of slow stuff that goes into a breakdown and ezdrummer 2 looks like that makes it simple to do.
It's simple as long as you keep it simple! I don't do any programming. I just use their loops for videos like this. Just be sure to get one or more of the metal packs (or packs catering to your preferred genre)
Hey Jason..have you upgraded to EZD 3 yet? it's awesome!!
I think I still have EZD 2 but should upgrade soon!
Hello Jason I would like to get your songs for only drumm for practice is possible ?
I do offer backing tracks that you can download for my Patreon supporter: www.patreon.com/jasonstallworth
I want to make 80s heavy metal music but I Find the drums on ez drummer 2 are too bright and precise, there's no groove to them , got any tips ?
You probably want one of their expansion packs. This video goes into how I make my backing tracks with it: ua-cam.com/video/RLsL6ZHjZbs/v-deo.html
What can I do if I would like to record the second rytm guitar? Is there any type of trick how to keep in mind what I have just jamed to the drums before?
LG
Dude, Dona search on my channel got harmonizing guitars and you’ll see a few videos for that.
May seem like a dumb question but can I write a guitar riff first then find drums to go with the riff? I came up with riff ideas but I’m having trouble getting EZ drummer to matchup up with riff.
That's a great question. You can, but you'd need to record that riff to a click track. So set the BPM in your studio to what you want and adjust it to fit your riff. Then record your riff and it will be easy to align the drums with it.
There is still no clarity on which to use in ezdrummer 2 for create backing tracks. The SDX or midi packs, which ones to buy and use?????
I don't do anything fancy...I just drag loops into the track (many get into programming). I do recommend getting an additional pack for the genre (go to Toontrack's website)
This video may give a little more insight in my process: ua-cam.com/video/RLsL6ZHjZbs/v-deo.html
I’m new to ezdrummer. This may be a stupid question, How do I add my guitar tracks to the computer? What all do I need?
Hi Mark, this is a good resource to start with that tells you everything you need: www.jasonstallworth.com/home-recording-studio-guide/
@@jasonstallworth thank you!
So. Silly question, you are listening thought your headphones to hear yourself but during your playing, how did you get us to hear the audio? I have a MacBook Air so I dunno if I have speakers. I’m tryin to learn how to record guitar 1. For my own practice/ enjoyment 2. I want to eventually write my own music! Also sick playin even if it was “stock” hahah
I think this might help you: www.jasonstallworth.com/sync-audio-with-video-guitar/
@@jasonstallworth you’re a boss!!! Ty!!
Well explained, and well done, Jason. Thanks for your time and talent with this.
🤘
👌👌
🤘
hey jason just a quick question, are you using the professional version or artist?
Alex t I use the Pro version and have been since around 2011
Comments! Thumbs!
Fuck i wished i would be as good as you
🤘
Do you run EZDrummer 2 or EZDrummer3? Are there any differences between the two aside from pricing?
I haven’t upgraded to 3. I only use this program for ideas though. I hire a real drummer for my albums and projects
@@jasonstallworth Ok right on, thanks for the 411 on that. Keep on creating! Always good to hear what you come up with 😁
