Hey Katherine, I will need to give you even more credit as an American woman studying in China. I get dizzy reading heavily texted document in Chinese and you took it in stride and thrive with your thesis. And I appreciate how you have embrace the culture, never complaint about anything or getting stuck in the small cubby hole of an office with many other students. You can and will be an ambassador that bridge the people and help countries coexist peacefully together. Keep up the good work.
I worked as a research intern at Nanjing University in the environmental science department back in 2018! This video brought back so many fond memories, from the subways, rental bikes, and student canteens to the graduate student offices (looked identical to when I worked there). I had such a great time there and everyone was so friendly, even though I could barely speak Chinese back then. I hope you love your time there!
Hi Miri. Like your comment. I know it is very particular, but what would you say to a phd student who is not 100% sure about studying in China? I believe it is a challenge in many aspects such as language, food, and culture as a whole right ? Thanks
@@humbertosilva4140 Hi, Humberto, I cannot recommend China enough to anyone who has the opportunity to work, visit, or study there. Although I’ve not studied abroad in China (only interned at the university), I did both my undergraduate and post-grad degrees abroad in different countries, and studying abroad is such an enriching experience. China certainly had the largest cultural and linguistic differences of any place I lived, but I think that’s part of what made it so wonderful. I can’t speak to the challenges of doing a phd in China, but all the professors I met were so kind, welcoming, and supportive. I would go back to China in a heartbeat given the opportunity, and I’d tell anyone considering studying in China to give it a go. There were certainly some more difficult moments (as you’d encounter anywhere), but I look back on my experience there with only positive memories.
What an eye-opener! There the whole world can see, why China will be the next superpower and will for sure be successful. Such a beautiful, orderly, clean, calm yet diligent and impressive university I have never ever seen in any western country, and for sure not in the U.S. Good job choosing such a great place for your master!
I moved to Xianlin 14 years ago and now studying in the UK. Xianlin was literally a rural area 14 years ago with little infrastructure, but now it becomes a super urbanized and convenient community full of young students and lots of foreigners. Really miss Xianlin and thank you for this nice video!
If people in the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe hear that your university has gates surrounding the entire compound, they'll say you are in a concentration camp against your will and being forced to study.
One of the most challenging aspects is putting technical terms into Chinese equivalent terms. That's why you really surprise me with your paper written all in Chinese.

I went to the British School of Nanjing and so the nostalgia I feel thinking about the city is immense. I am truly very glad that I have had the sublime experience of living in that country. It is so outlandishly different from western that it makes you miss it profoundly. I will return one day.
Who was the biggest mass murderer in the history of the world? Most people probably assume that the answer is Adolf Hitler, architect of the Holocaust. Others might guess Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, who may indeed have managed to kill even more innocent people than Hitler did, many of them as part of a terror famine that likely took more lives than the Holocaust. But both Hitler and Stalin were outdone by Mao Zedong. From 1958 to 1962, his Great Leap Forward policy led to the deaths of up to 45 million people - easily making it the biggest episode of mass murder ever recorded. 300 million homeless in china today
No way! I went there, too when I was very young. It's so strange to find someone random online who went to the same school as me, especially since I have lived in the UK every since where the chances in real life are so slim!

Anyway, it's cool that you mentioned China and its concept of living in harmony with the environment, because that goes way back. In fact, the first environmental laws were decreed in China nearly 4000 years ago, during the period of Dayu when there were bans on chopping wood or fishing during certain times of the year. Later on, in the Warring States period, around 2500 years ago, there were rules to ensure that rivers were not blocked and a ban on burning trees or brush for fertilizer except during most of the year. A year ago I was traveling through the north of SE Asia, down the Mekong to Laos. It was during the (slash)&burn season. It was so bad I felt as though I was fleeing fr/Thailand to Laos which was worse, finally I had to fly to Vietnam to escape the smoke of the burning house that was SE Asia. While doing this I thought about taking the brand new high speed train to Kunming fr/Laos to escape the smoke. It was all the way up into So.China. The rumors on the ground were that China was threatening the death penalty for anyone in that part of Yunnan who started fires using s&b ag.method. We all laughed at the 'bent rumors' bc/ it sounded a bit extreme. However, the smoke was like being in a giant house on fire and you couldn't get out. Yeah I'm sure it was a completely different place, even now there are huge changes going on all over the place , it is especially noticeable to me since I like exploring the countryside and it's transforming right in front of me, like the countryside near my university that I used to go to often, it's already gone and new buildings are being constructed. It will be interesting to watch changes continue to take place in the next decade
This video made me subscribe, i'm in China every year be it work, visiting family or giving tech talks in Mandarin - but writing a whole thesis in Chinese is a lifetime achievement few could rival. Very inspiring.
Nicely shot video with non intrusive narration. The university and surroundings were cool to look at. The thing about nature and human co-existance is embedded in Indian culture as well.
I have been put to shame seeing that full thesis written in mandarin, that is something I don't think I can do. But even more admirable is how you are so open and constantly learning more about the Chinese language and culture; that is an attitude I can definitely strive to follow regarding my own passions.
WoW, writing thesis in Chinese! Very impressive. Nanjing University is a well established university. If campus is far from city center, it must be a new campus.
I used to be an undergraduate student in Nanjing University. And now I am living in US in pursuit of a PhD degree. It is so great to see all familiar scenes in Nanjing and NJU. Miss everything.

Nanjing's scenery is beautiful. I love Xuanwu Lake and Purple Mountain. I remember there's a plaque by the lake that records how Sun Yat-sen described Nanjing as the perfect city, being positioned around lakes, mountains and the nearby Yangtze.
It is so magical to find your video about our school on my youtube home page while I'm using VPN to watch youtube all the time🤣Enjoy your life! (I'm an undergraduate student and I actually saw some of my friends in your video!🤣🤣
I used to live in Nanjing but I'm from Canada, I lived there when I was ages 6-11, that was 7 years ago, I used to go to the international school right by the metro you take. I really have great memories and would love to visit back. Hope you enjoy!
My mum went to Dondnan Uni, and my girlfriend was born in Nanjing. So I really want to go there myself as soon. Thanks for your video, and good luck with the thesis~ hello from Denmark.
Accidentally saw this video on our university 120th anniversary day! Thank you for taking me back to my Alma Mater!! Actually in the past before the pandemic, people could enter the campus from different gates freely at anytime!
I honestly appreciate your attitude towards study ,because I study English since I was middle school and right now I’m 20 in New Zealand for university but each assessment or essay I did badly and I hate to read all the English articles even that’s much easier to me than for you to reading Chinese. Through this video you inspired me ,this is much more than teacher or parents tell you to work hard. And by the way I from ChengDu + I am lazy it’s not because where I from it’s because my own problem LoL.
Great video. My mom was brought up in Nanjing. My grandpa and my uncle used to attend JingLing univ, almost the predesser of Nanjing Univ. The city has become such a beautiful place, I visited it before the pandemic.
I studied at Nanjing for 7 years before I came to the US. Some of the scenes in your video remind me of the old days. Thanks for the nice video. Glad you enjoy your time there. Also, the old campus of Nanjing University is a beautiful place to visit. Bests.
I have been to Nanjing just to visit the women's museum, love the city so green, clean, and rich history. It is so sad for sex slave women to the Japanese, but I prefer Wuzhou near Shanghai. Congratulation on your experience and education. I am sure it's your lifetime memory. Take care.

When I was in an university in Nanjing. My university just started a joint Chinese-USA culture research center with John Hopkins University. There were some US students there. They focused on cultural and social studies or other liberal arts majors. I am glad you are a STEM student in China.
I was around the way at Nanjing Xi Yuan in 1996 and 1997. I was last in Nanjing in 2003 and there was no Metro. It radically looks like a different place.
Isn't the reaserach from john Hopkins that keeps telling the world about human rights issues in China whenever they need something to sanction or ban from china???

Yeah I'm sure it was a completely different place, even now there are huge changes going on all over the place , it is especially noticeable to me since I like exploring the countryside and it's transforming right in front of me, like the countryside near my university that I used to go to often, it's already gone and new buildings are being constructed. It will be interesting to watch changes continue to take place in the next decade
I am learning so much about China from your videos. Greeting from Dagenham, England!!
PhD student in Sydney graduated from Nanjing Uni, really appreciate it you share this video which reminds my old days in Nanjing! I really miss home!
I used to be an undergraduate student in Nanjing University. And now I am living in US in pursuit of a PhD degree. It is so great to see all familiar scenes in Nanjing and NJU. Miss everything.
is this University one of the top uni in China?
@@eduardochavacano yes,top7
stay safe, it is dangerous in america these days for chinese people.
Thanks for uploading this! I lived in Nanjing for about 5 months and really enjoy watching this.
Thanks! It reminds me my university life back in China. Wish I were there enjoying the vibrant campus and city life too
Graduated from NJU for around 5 years. So many precious memories. Thanks for filming this video.
Thanks for your video. I really enjoyed it. I wish the US/UK would stop telling lies about the Uyghurs and Xinjiang.

This is the real China
Us/uk not lie all about xinjiang, maybe some is true. but Chinese government is doing now I think it’s benefits most uyghurs more than if government don’t do anything about it.
@@jjxing2004 No MAYBE, 99 percent is lies. Except putting Terrorist in Jail which West thinks is violating human rights, what a joke.

Beautiful campus, reminding me of my college days in Beijing. Watching this makes me homesick. Thank you for sharing.
I used to live in Nanjing but I'm from Canada, I lived there when I was ages 6-11, that was 7 years ago, I used to go to the international school right by the metro you take. I really have great memories and would love to visit back. Hope you enjoy!
Omg this is my hometown, feeling so much warmth. Thanks for the video!
Hello from New York, thanks for taking me to a part of the world I have never been to.
And by the way I from ChengDu
+ I am lazy it’s not because where I from it’s because my own problem LoL.
wow, so impressive. Writing thesis in chinese. respect.
Awesome day to spend doing a lot of things I love love China 🇨🇳 its like my second home
Great video. My mom was brought up in Nanjing. My grandpa and my uncle used to attend JingLing univ, almost the predesser of Nanjing Univ. The city has become such a beautiful place, I visited it before the pandemic.
Incredible She picked up Chinese langguage so fast !!!
I studied at Nanjing for 7 years before I came to the US. Some of the scenes in your video remind me of the old days. Thanks for the nice video. Glad you enjoy your time there. Also, the old campus of Nanjing University is a beautiful place to visit. Bests.
This video brought back happy memories of university life in China... Thank you for this nice work!
as a local student in nanjing , i'm happy you can share the beauty of nanjing
I wish you success in your life! And congratulations on choosing China for this important stage in your life.
I gradiated from NJU IN 2015 and I spent all my four years in Xianlin Campus. Great to see my Uni from you video. Love from UK
I have been to Nanjing just to visit the women's museum, love the city so green, clean, and rich history. It is so sad for sex slave women to the Japanese, but I prefer Wuzhou near Shanghai. Congratulation on your experience and education. I am sure it's your lifetime memory. Take care.
你是说苏州吧。。instead of wuzhou
Soochow (Suzhou in Pin Yin, 苏州,蘇州 in traditional Chinese) instead of Wuzhou.
Hiiii I just uploaded my vlog to Beijing lol any support would mean so much to me xoxo
Youre amazing, particularly as youre studying your Masters degree in Chinese! Im a teacher at Nanjing International School, quite close to your university. Ive been in Nanjing for 12 years now.
Amazing woman, you are a genius 😍😍😍😁😁😁 thanks for the inspiration! 🙏
Thanks for sharing a day in your life in Nanjing. So impressed that you write your thesis in Chinese!
What a wonderful life, Katherine!
I have been following your vlogs for a few years. I came a cross this one which I had not seen before. I very enjoyed your story about your life in Nanjing University which is interesting! Thanks.👌👍🏻🙏🏼
So, you're also alumnus of NJU.
Isn't the reaserach from john Hopkins that keeps telling the world about human rights issues in China whenever they need something to sanction or ban from china???
As a Chinese, I have never been to Nanjing before, and I will work in Nanjing in a few months. That video is great for me, hhh
hhh 555 ^ ^
Unbelievable changes have been made during these years in China, and you are one of those people who made all these happened. I am so happy to see my home town now lived by beautiful people like you.
great video. I can relate to this video a lot as an international student. greetings from Taiwan!
First video and I'm mightily impressed by its honesty and fun. Feels like I'm right there doing what you're up to. Looking forward to watching more. Have a nice one.
Never think of one day me as an international student studying in Australia, the first time get to see what a college student life looks like in my own country is from another international student studying in my own country hahaha
It felt so good to see my uni after 3 years. I did my bechlor and masters from nanjing Uni same campus. When I started my bechlor this campus was not that big but just opened to some departments in 2010. Keep posting more video. Watching you from melbourne australia
Wow you are amazing and thanks for the amazing amazing video! Dont forget to add the time stamps next time! Ill see you soon when they reopen china and nanjing 😭❤️🙏
Great video! I lived in Nanjing for 14 years. Many good memories.
Beautiful view! I will be a grad student at NJU Xianlin from September this year and I'm so excited to come across your video here. Hope to meet you then maybe.
