Thanks for the idea. I used some light packing tape to divide the tarp up into sections to add strength and stop tears from going too far, and I found mylar that is camo on one side. Looks nicer and more stealthy.
That was a very simple idea but yet highly practical as well. I like the simplicity of the "grommet." If you have not tried the SOL Heat Sheets yet, I think you would be very pleased with the considerable upgrade in quality from the cheap mylar but yet not much of an increase in cost.
I have a few SOLs. One is a double in a PSK. Everything you say is true. Better all the way around. The DIY from last year is still ok but it’s nearly time for a new one. Maybe I will use a double SOL for the next one. The Orange side is also nice and if I remember there is even survival tips printed on the orange side. I should look and see. You know, I'm going camping in January in central MN and I'll be setting up a reflector fire as it is. This will be perfect to set up on the other side of the hammock. I'll already have my tarp up in an A-frame over the hammock; think I'll do this as a lean-to just like that. The duct tape grommets will make for a clean, sturdy set-up too. Thanks for the tip!

I thought about using paperclips to attach the two pieces of material tarp and mylar as I thought you could reuse both afterwards and it wouldn't weaken your tarp? I 'm not sure if it would work though.

I've been trying to think of the best way to "line" my lean to with a mylar blanket for reflecting heat and duck tape grommets look like the answer! I've added brass grommets to the more heavy duty type space blankets but why bother with these cheap mylar blankets eh. This is the perfect solution. Thanks!

He glued the mylar reflective blanket to the inside of an actual tarp. I also do believe that one can buy such tarps by different companies as well, such as SOL. Also can be used as a super UL/very low bulk stand alone tarp but not as durable as if glued to another tarp etc etc. That said gluing or taping one to an existing tarp sounds like a great idea as well. I used it during the last outing to block drafts from the little tipi door and as a ground cloth. It's starting to get beat on. The duct tape grommets hold however pulled the corners off of two ends. Just replaced them with new duct tape and paracord tie-offs/grommets. The grommets are stronger than the Mylar blanket.

I always carried marbles for that type setup .I will be buying a hole punch, and some orange duck tape.You could attach small pieces of tape to your cordage so you could see it and not trip.I love learning new and better ways to do stuff, thank you I'm smarter then I was! Cutout a piece of plastic same size, then Mylar, then duck tape it, be light, permanent, part of your kit, just a thought.Peace!

Just curious, but have you considered doing a video on the knots you use? I only know a few really basic ones and that friction tension knot looks really handy.
I take spray adhesive an stick the Mylar to the inside of my shelter ( Rip stop / nylon ) . Those blankets cant take snow or wind . I think we get more heat back from the gold color Mylar ( go figure ). Stay warm , good luk n health an hunts

For some reason on youtube, people often, usually it seems, demo these reflective blankets when there is little or no wind. Even a slight breeze will greatly complicate successful use of many/most of these blankets. For me, the cheaper ones have turned into Christmas tree tinsel relatively quickly. A potential tragedy for someone trying to use one in a life-saving circumstance.
Believe it or not the duct tape grommets and Mylar holds up better than you know. I have actually used this for years in multiple applications as a heat reflector and even a ground cloth. It's a disposable item as the video says. The grommets add more utility. That was very crinkly at the beginning! It made me laugh, because it was so loud I could hardly hear you speaking. Great idea for a tarp. Those things are so lightweight, you could carry half a dozen of them.

the only reason to use a mylar blanket is a survival situation . You will not have duct tape and a hole punch in a survival situation he should be teaching you how to make a button on the corners of the blanket this useless info
Jonathan there are more uses for a Mylar blanket than "a survival situation". For example I used it as a reflector for a fire. This is normal use. I go out of my way to show that during the video and even in a still photo at the end of the video taken during a normal extreme cold weather winter outing. This is well known information and done by many outdoors people. It makes camping more comfortable in the cold if there is a fire. I actually prefer to use it in conjuration with a poncho tarp setup as shown in the last part of the video. As for survival kit duct tape is survival gear 101 and the same goes for cordage. You don't need a hole punch to put a hole in something. I used one because it was convenient and why not? This is a DIY video not a survival video. Just look at the title. You don't have to wait till in the woods to make this. I also explain that in the video as well and even showed how small the entire things packs down. Thanks for watching.

Anyone got any info as to whether this blocks police helicopter FLIR cameras? Asking for a friend..
Old comments, but mylar blocks thermal. On FLIR it will show up as a tarp still, there is a type of cameo that helps though.
And nobody's talking about what appeared to quite possibly be a Streaking behind him at the beginning

If anything, the mylar will tear WELL before the tape will give out. 4 layers duct tape on the mylar.
