Thank you for your comments...we endeavour to continue to provide ongoing material to support student counselors...the only downfall is our time constraints due to running our own private practices, so please bear with us. 😊
I really enjoyed this video as it provides a real life scenario. However, what do we do when even after asking open ended questions the individual is not trying to communicate. For instance I can ask: Did you enjoy yourself at the conference? And they can respond by saying not really and the conversation ends. What are some suggestions in the event this happens? Thank you!
It is such a shame Debbie and I are too busy in our private practices to make more videos, but we do appreciate that the ones we’ve done still bring value and are of service to others. So, thank you for your comment. 🦋 When an individual provides brief or unengaged responses despite open-ended questions, there are several strategies to encourage more meaningful communication: 1. **Follow-up Questions**: Build on their response by asking more specific follow-up questions. For instance: - “What aspects of the conference did you find less enjoyable?” - “Was there anything in particular that could have improved the experience?” 2. **Show Genuine Interest**: Express genuine curiosity and interest in their experience. This can help make them feel more comfortable sharing. - “I’m curious, did you attend any particularly memorable sessions, whether good or bad?” 3. **Share Your Own Experiences**: Sometimes, sharing your own experiences can encourage others to open up. This can create a more balanced exchange. - “I remember attending a conference where the keynote speaker was fantastic, but the breakout sessions were quite dull. Did you have a similar experience?” 4. **Acknowledge and Validate**: Acknowledge their feelings and validate their experience. This can help them feel understood and more willing to elaborate. - “It sounds like it wasn’t the best experience. I can understand how that might be disappointing.” 5. **Explore Different Angles**: Try to explore different aspects of the event or experience. - “How was the networking at the conference?” - “Did you meet anyone interesting or make any valuable connections?” 6. **Use Hypotheticals**: Sometimes, discussing hypothetical situations can open up the conversation. - “If you could change one thing about the conference, what would it be?” 7. **Reflect and Paraphrase**: Reflecting back on what they’ve said can show that you’re listening and encourage them to elaborate. - “You mentioned you didn’t really enjoy it-was it the content, the organization, or something else that you found lacking?” By using these strategies, you can help guide the conversation in a more engaging direction and encourage the individual to share more about their thoughts and experiences.
