It's a pleasure watching hilarious Martin Short and Harold Ramis with lovely Catherine O'Hara (she's in Schitt's Creek, Beetlejuice, Best in Show, Home Alone, etc). Short has done some fun characters over the years in TV and films; my fave is interviewer Jiminy Glick. Short once said there could never be an Ed Grimley movie because we couldn't take the character for more than a few minutes, LOL. True. I loved when Ed would dance and play his triangle on SNL to the Hungarian dance #5 by Brahms ... pure joy.
In his autobiography - 'I Must Say, My Life as a Humble Comedy Legend' - Martin Short tells that this sketch (originated at Second City Toronto) was his first time doing Ed Grimley in a sketch. It's nice to see it recreated.
I read that part today! John Candy originated the role and Marty, believing he couldn't compete with him, took it in a whole new direction. I remember seeing this version when I was a kid on HBO (still have the VHS floating around somewhere) so I was so delighted when he was describing it cause I knew exactly what he was talking about when his realization that he's out of his league (00:46) always got the biggest laugh and that moment taught him so much about comedy. also Catherine looks absolutely stunning here and RIP Harold
Martin Short is right up there with other comedy legends like Jerry Lewis, Red Skelton, and Steve Martin. I love his Ed Grimley and Jiminy Cricket characters. He's a riot when he appears on talk shows with Steve Martin. A fantastic comedy duo. Would love to see them live.
@@lifegood1712 OMG! If you folks don't know Catherine as the (figurative) red-hot mama from SCTV, you're missing out beyond belief! imagine how great of a comedian you must be to perform in this skit and not laugh. O'Hara not cracking once while looking at Grimley might be the best "straight face" in comedy history
Yeah, but she was doing it back at him, where the audience couldn't see. Mirroring a hilarious thing is a good way not to break. And it must've been fun, too.
I am reading Short's book 'I Must Say". Apparently this clip may be the first appearance of Ed Grimley, or very shortly thereafter. The interviewer turns out to be the younger brother of Dan Akroyd ... :)
+Acerara176 Crap, you seem to be right ... how could I have missed that? It clearly is Harold Ramis. I was so caught up in the book ... maybe I have mis- remembered as well because Martin Short would likely not have made that mistake, so it was ME who is in error. Sorry, and thank you for the correction. Gonna have to read that book again ... that is certainly Harold Ramis.
+Wellington J. Flute In the book he says the piece was for Second City, this is clearly a comic relief benefit. You might want to try re-reading the book
+jetnut89 I'll have to go to the library and get it again ... it was a fast and good read so should be okay ... I don't think it was from a benefit though. Although he did do a few benefits after several years on 'top' so to speak, this skit, just judging by the relative age of all the parties, was very early in their careers. Second City seems a good fit here, or even the time on SNL? You've go me wondering myself now.
Unfortunately, you cut off the payoff at the end. Great sketch with some of my favorites from SCTV. I remember watching it from the first Comic Relief.
It was nice she wasn't credited so I had the surprise of realising it was her. On the other hand it isn't nice because, this is a skit about unequal treatment in the workplace. But then again she did get extra comments ...
It is patently unfair for Catherine O’Hara to be that quick witted and funny and look like that
Tell me about it... she's drop-dead GORGEOUS!
Yes BUT she had trouble suppressing a laugh when Martin Short started leering at her.
@@georgesotiroff5080 To be fair, I'd have too.
She fucking SIZZLES
Yes, so much for "hot girls aren't funny"
"Aw, gee, that was sad. I thought it was closer, and yet it wasn't." is such a goddam funny line delivery. Martin Short is a genius.
Pure
Underrated genius
Nice language.
I miss Ed Grimley. One of the most unique, crazy and funny characters ever created!!!
I've been thinking of Ed Grimley lately and finding him on you tube. This is the funniest skit so far.
R.I.P Harold Ramis. We will all greatly miss you.
Catherine was such a FOX, and a darned fine actress too.
And I bet she coula easily taken Grimly 2 out of 3 if he hadn't caught her off guard!
@@kenlieck7756 Ed definitely jumped the gun... omg. It's (not) Daniel Johnston. Quite decent, I must say.

To me Cathrine O’Haire is still a sexy fox

Some of the greatest skits with certainly some of the greatest cast!

Martin Short is a comic genius (I must say). Catherine O hara is absolutely stunning here. She's such a beauty and a talented comic and actress.
He also seems like a decent enough guy, I must say
hillarious the way they looked at each other, martin of course trying to get catherine to break.
He got her to with "All right."
I'd love to see Ed Grimley get interviewed by Jiminy Glick
Comedy itself would implode!!!!!
Cannot divide by zero
My head would explode from JOY
I’d like to see that, I must say...

Extremely funny, I must say.
