    51 years old Botvinnik.. Great performance.. This is how to best Tals attacking style.. Poor health is no excuse. Botvinnik must have done his homework well. After this game Tal has never recovered and played for the title..

    Very nice annotations Mato. I once read a book that botvinnik says. TAL has no positional understanding, he only wants room for his pieces, if TAL learnes to program himself properly then it would be impossible to play against him. Botvinnik was right here.

    Even Jordan missed a free throw and game winning shot once in a while. Tal is by far the most ingenious attacking chess player of all time. On a side note... Could you please go over the game between Hikaru Nakamura vs Boris Savchenko from this years Dubai Rapid & Blitz tournament ?! Round 3. From move 2 on this game was fascinating. The ending was unreal.

    Let's not forget that Botvinnik was already 50 at that time and had been an absolute top player since the time Tal was born. He is the only world champion to regain the title twice, against Smyslov and Tal.

      @@albibushi3006 He never won a world title defense.
      He won the vacant championship (due to Alekhine’s death) in the 1948 match-tournament. He held the title in 1951 and 1954 by drawing (not winning) against Bronstein and Smyslov. The title holder got the keep the title in case of a drawn match.
      He lost to Smyslov in 1957 and got the title back by invoking a rematch clause put in especially for him, winning in 1958 (as the challenger).
      He lost to Tal in 1960 and again used the rematch route to regain the title in 1961.

      @@SankalpApharande look, TAL is my all time favorite. But someone who has come back so many times after defeat, someone who has contributed for chess academies like Botvinnik, should also be given credit for his contribution. Tal himself made no excuses. Botvinnik came to understand what it takes to keep Tal from overrunning him combinatorially: "limiting the scope of Tal's pieces." He played that way consistently throughout the match.

    in fact, everyone knows that Tal was seriously ill during the second championship, and when Botvinnik wanted revenge, the doctors didn’t advise Tal to even get closer to chess, but Botvinnik didn’t care ... and, moreover, Botvinik even took advantage of Tal’s disease because he didn’t want to lose to Tal the championship again .. so if Tal lost it’s only because of his illness

  • @Watermelon_Man92
    @Watermelon_Man92 10 років тому

    The cool thing about watching games with Botvinnik and Tal is that the two players are extremists of their respective styles. Botvinnik is very position oriented and Tal is very tactics oriented.

    • @michaelsshirt8046
      @michaelsshirt8046 10 років тому

      I wonder where did you see in this game positional play from Botvinnik ? It's screaming that the both players were attacking, actually Tal looked more positional here.

    • @Watermelon_Man92
      @Watermelon_Man92 10 років тому +1

      KungfuKoala
      Being on the attack does not necessarily imply that your playing style is tactical. The things that Botvinnik did were patient. For instance, he wanted to close the game before continuing with his attack. If you look at Tal in this game, for example at 2:02; Tal captures the knight on g3 and allows the h-file to open up. A strictly position player would not normally do this because positional players say that rooks on open files are good. Here Tal is deliberately letting Botvinnik have a rook on an open file. So why does Tal do this? Well, if you notice, Tal has a little more potential space for his pieces after this exchange, and that's what Tal wants.

    • @michaelsshirt8046
      @michaelsshirt8046 10 років тому

      I didn't say Tal was strictly positional nor that Botvinnik strictly tactical, but Botvinnik was not a positional player if you look at his games on this channel including this one, they are often sharp and involve sacrifices. Compare his games to Karpov or Petrosian and you will see the difference.

    • @computo2000
      @computo2000 10 років тому

      In fact tal's sacrifices were many times positional... Which is kinda weird, because they were tactics and he was a great tactician o_O

  • @pneumatic00

    Some say Botvinnik had a boring style; tending towards closed games and perhaps originating the endless draws of Soviet chess in the 70's. But the swashbuckling Tal whom every chessplayer loves had a very hard time defeating it. Very few players could poke any sort of hole in Botvinnik's playing. Inch by inch he defeated many a player and seldom lost. He may not be as exciting as Tal (who is?) but he was able to take tiny advantages and press them into brutal attacks many times.

    at 5:00 in the video, white should have delivered check with bishop on g6 (here the bishop can shoot back to defend on d1 square in cooperation with white knight), then taken knight on f6 with white rook. if black rook recaptures white rook, then white rook to g8, check, followed by capturing black rook on a8. What you guys think?

    1:51, white pawn still takes on bishop even after loosing its knight to the white knight then attacking the queen, queen then takes or moves away, and then black takes the white knight by its knight.

  • @joshmyer3906
    @joshmyer3906 10 років тому

    I think black wanted to try something unexpected here by opening the g file early in the game. I think white played a prudent game from a strong position. It's not that black isn't aggressive ... his opening threatens p-e4 in conjunction with a queen side advance, and tal's play is pretty darn threatening for the whole game even though he develops along different lines. I would have liked to see b-d7 instead of q-e8.
