If the nicest guy in the world and one of the top 5 jiu jitsu practitioners of all time (who also happens to be the professor that gave you your black belt) suspends you from his own Academy, there must be something really bad with you.Grow up, Dillon. Marcelo, I back your decision 100%. I trained at renzos but had the chance to go meet you and train twice at your gym in Manhattan. I know who you are and the values you promote are the ones that should be promoted in martial arts' teachings. Nowadays with the ufcs and Conor's influence, we have a youth with a distorted view of what being a true martial artist means. They are culture vultures, in it for the money and fame only. I commend you for not just denouncing Dillon's attitude but actually doing something about it and kicking him out of your academy. He isn't upholding the core values of a martial artist, much less one that was taught by a master practitioner such as yourself. Obrigado for keeping it real and maintaining these core values like humility, integrity, and correctness that should be taught in all martial art academies.

I don't know the specifics, but commonsense says that humility is a big part of not just jujitsu but martial arts teachings as a whole. Dilon was very far from being humble and who knows if that attitude started rubbing off on mg academy students.

Marcelo is an exemplary sensei/coach human being and his teachings reach beyond his school to practitioners of bjj throughout the globe. He displays all the qualities and virtues of a wise and humble master. It is unfortunate that he has to make these difficult decisions at his academy but he is a visionary and philosophical teacher and he is hopeful that his message and standards are passed onto his disciples and teachers alike. you have a slight variation but this is known as the Judo Moral Code which is the set of ethics that was created by the founder of judo, Kano, for both on AND off the mat. we try to impart these beliefs to our youngest and expect these from our most advanced, we see these 8 words "Courtesy, Courage, Friendship, Honesty, Honour, Modesty, Respect, Self-Control" in dojos and it was on a huge banner during our provincial championships 2-3 weeks ago. I've seen national champions asked to leave a dojo because of their behavior so I am extremely impressed that Marcelo took this stance because I always felt that the BJJ world only deals with the sporting aspect, not the pedagogical or moral. Utmost respect for the man.

    • @Nick.NoCoNative

Nick Laney agreed (Kano took from various schools of JJJ after all) but few have your sense of history. I was more thinking about present day since ive never come across these codes in any BJJ, TKD, karate schools. its considered antiquated beliefs by some/many.

Excelente ensinamento.
Pessoalmente que o jiu-jitsu seria melhor visto e um aceitação ainda maior se existissem mais mestres como o Marcelo.

Listening to Marcelo explain his decision certain adjectives come to mind: Diplomatic, sincere, taking the high road. With the explosion in popularity of Jiu-Jitsu around the world, most of us are drawn to this amazing art for the life-changing affect it has all facets of our lives. Whether for self-defense, fitness, competition or curiosity being the impetus for us first looking into Jiu-Jitsu, we stay and train for so many other reasons. It will also attract a few people that see it as a way to dominate and impose their will upon others, since it IS the MOST effective Martial Art on Earth. Guys with SDS-Small Dick Syndrome, that act the fool hoping others will notice them because they are so shallow and have NO depth to their character. I fear danis is one of these,

I didn´t knew about this guy until today, when i found him on a bjj playlist. After watching like 4 videos and interviews this seem like a very genuine guy. He obviously cares about his craft but also about the morals of it. I´m a painter and i really admire people who stay true to their art, who are critic with themselves and stay humble. Problem is that nowadays we live in a fuckedup world where people try to be what they are not and sometimes they try so hard is unbelievable. I never liked dillon danis i think he´s a joke, and is very sad, because in all his social media you can see on his face he didn´t even believe in whats he´s saying or who he says he is. It´s a shame that nowadays you have to create almost like a fake persona in order to accomplish anything "entertaiment" related. There have been always fake people trying so hard to be somebody else, the difference is that nowadays most of people don´t even recognize this and take everything for what it appears to be. That makes the things even worse, because people lose themselves in a situation where they can not succeed being themselves, and that´s very sad. Hats off to this man for staying true to himself. You can tell he´s a very happy man, doing what he loves and not faking anything.... that sounds easy but i think it´s the most difficult thing to accomplish in life, i hope to achieve that someday. True inspiration

Marcelo Garcia is 100% class, as long as I've known of him and followed his career he has epitomized the martial artist who comports himself with decency and humility and treats everyone with the same kind of respect he would like to be treated with. Anyone so privileged to train with him who didn't appreciate and honor that is very stupid and short-sighted.

There are always two sides to every story. You can't force somebody to be the person they are not just because you help him out. You can't force someone to live your way of life outside the gym. Everyone has a personal life and his own way of earning money. Dillon has been very loyal till date and as per different sources, he has never been disrespectful to anyone inside the gym and has followed every rules. It's just ridiculous to dictate how a person should act in social media and media. Dillion Danis is definitely cocky and personally, I prefer someone like Marcelo. I can relate to Marcelo's personality but what the gym did to him was dirty. Good to see that Conor stick with him. Dillon Danis mention in an interview that his best friend and his friends didn't even contact him once during this time and they went ahead with the media stories. He mentioned that Conor would always call up or text and ask how he is doing. Not surprised to see Dillon jumping infront of every brawl Conor had. With Diaz, Mayweather and Khabib. Loyalty is the most important thing for me even though I respect Marcelo's philosophy /preference is more focused on personality/public image. He seems really hurt to see Marcelo going to media with stories and not even a single friends including his best friend not sticking up for him. He was stabbed in the back, his friends instead of supporting him in secret through text messages or solidarity kept spreading these bad news about Dillon. Character Assassin

I have read both sides of the story. Essentially this seems to be a clash of MG's old school BJJ values and the young guns like Danis who want to leverage their talent into money and fame. Danis wants to have shouting matches with DDS guys and get his name in the papers with Conor MacGregor.. To be fair, MG has made it, has a great Gym in Manhattan and is probably financially stable - and let me be clear, he is EARNED everything he has, no doubt about it. No short cuts. People like Danis also want to make it...NOW...and to be fair to him, the life of a professional athlete is a short one.Danis has worked very hard and is obviously talented. The world that Danis wants to be in - MMA - is a different world from BJJ...where fighters have to hype up fights and bad mouth their opponents and show ZERO respect. That's incompatible with BJJ values that MG has. Maybe their parting was inevitable.
