In 2001, the Browns played the Jaguars in the infamous game known as "bottlegate". After a shocking decision made by the referees, the stadium erupted and began throwing bottles at anyone and everyone on the field. This video gives the full story on what exactly took place on this fateful day.

I was at this game, closest thing to a riot I've ever been in. People were throwing literally anything they could get their hands on. The funniest thing about it to me was how one instigator can basically incite a riot. If you watch the whole video one bottle hits . . . then there's like a 3 or 4 second delay and all the rest come raining down and pandemonium ensues lol

On October 1st 1970 in Philadelphia at Connie Mack Stadium, they had a fan insurrection that made this Cleveland game look like a block party. It was the last game at Connie Mack and the fans came looking for souvenirs and wanting to destroy the stadium. It wasn't because the Philadelphia Phillies were leaving to go to another city. It was because they were staying and continuing the tradition of 88 years without winning a World Series. A fan actually ran out in the 9th inning and tackled the Phillies left fielder as he was running to catch the fly for the last out and a Phil's win. The fan said, "No no, we're not winning tonight." TRUE STORY. THE UMPIRES WANTED TO FORFEIT THE GAME SEVERAL TIMES, BUT BOTH MANAGERS TOLD THEM IF THEY FORFEITED, THE BRAWL WOULD BE WORSE.

Sitting in The Stadium View Bar & Grill, before the game, watching clips of this on one of the pregame shows, an idea for a sign struck me. I had one of the bartenders fetch me a big piece of a cardboard box, and a roll of bailing wire, that he just happened to have under the bar, along with a big black magic marker. I wired an empty plastic 16 ounce Miller Lite bottle to the cardboard, with the caption: “NOT FOR SALE TO MINORS”, - (Or Browns Fans!). I may have gotten on TV, not sure, but every Packer fan that saw it, laughed hysterically, while every Browns fan just groaned and rolled their heads.

I was at this game when I was 10, it's crazy the false memories that happen over the years, I had thought the game was so emotional because while this game was happening it was something like the team that was last place in the wild card had lost and the browns winning would have put them in that last wild card spot
But no, looking it up, looking at schedules, it seems what happened was the browns were 6-4, fans were probably excited for the team looking good, then lost 2 in a row, so losing to a team they should easily beat in the Jaguars is just frustrating, all the while the teams that were on the border of the wild card had won, so they needed to win this game in order to stay relevant but lost, and this game officially eliminated them from the playoffs

This is exactly the kind of bullshit Jaguars fans have to put up with: garbage rumors that targeted them as a fanbase. Attendance for Jaguars games didn’t begin to drop below 65k until 2009 right after the housing crisis crash. We’ve been trying to rebuild our fanbase since that year, but you can’t do that with constant losing season.
Ironically, if people keep lording things like “I hope their fans lose the team” and they finally find a way to start winning again like they did in the late 90’s, this sort of thing may repeat itself as Jags fans will likely be very inhospitable towards anyone not from Jax. There’s a reason we now shout “Duval vs all y’all”.

Tracy Bell...do you understand football? They weren't challenging the penalty. They were challenging the play prior after the spike happened, which was not allowed. No team is charged a timeout for a challenge in the last two minutes, it's a booth review. Dumbest comment I've seen in a while.

The refs ended the game. But league commissioner Paul Tagliabue called and told the refs to get the teams back on the field to finish the game.

In my humble opinion, this game was the single biggest travesty of justice I've EVER seen in my life!! The rules were, at the time, if you wanted to have a play reviewed, you had to throw your challenge flag BEFORE(key word) the next play was started!! Since the Browns ran another play, the Jaguars' challenge should have been made null and void!! My brother and my nephew were both at that infamous game, but thankfully, they weren't injured during that whole ungodly incident!!

Al Lerner new the browns got screwed royally and he wasn't going to kiss Taglibue and the NFL's ass.
Especially when you consider his current health at that time and that he new this was probably his last chance and season to bring home a winner and a playoff appearance.
Al lerner in fact passed away a short time later after this game and his son randy actually did take the browns to the playoffs the following year as the new owner. So Al Never got his playoff wish but his son did.
