The "Body Bag" game was named due to comments made by Buddy Ryan prior a Washington-Philadelphia regular season matchup in 1990. This is my telling of what happened that day.

Madden needs to drop a game mode called body bag mode. Every hit stick or truck results in injury and have KTO with FlemLo commentating
It would be fun until all you have left are 50 overall 3rd stringers and guys playing out of position to fill holes. Back in madden 08 I had a career mode DE face the Giants who had like 4 OL on the mend so they trotted out their kicker as a back up tackle. I think it racked up like 15 sacks that game bc you’d just bull rush him and get the sack in like 2 seconds
@@DannL18 it would be a strategy game. Do you start you your starters, play starters on key plays, or save them till 4th quarter 🤔
@@m0reLani745 this honestly Sounds like a fire idea maybe 2k will pick it up
@@Nalyd.3 it’s all I want for Christmas now 😂

"The injuries in this game were so devastating, the NFL had to change the rules..."
Whew. More safety for the players.
"... to allow for more QB's on the game-day roster."
Oh.
that’s how american fixes its problems in general too 😂😂
This is entertainment. I don't give a single crap about the safety of some millionaire. You are out there to get creamed or throw the football, or both.
Buddy Ryan was also a part of another brutal game, the '84 Bears vs Raiders match up. The Raiders struggled to keep their quarterbacks upright in that game as well. Though to be fair, the Raiders sent McMahon out of the game with a lacerated kidney.
Wish KTO did a video on that

Game 10- November 4, 1984
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_Los_Angeles_Raiders_season?wprov=sfla1
Buddy Ryan gave his defenses catnip and cocaine. The bears and eagles defenses could make a top 10 list for brutal games. I can just imagine him going full Drago in his pre-game speeches to his defenses: “if he dies, then he dies.”
Yeah that 84 Bears vs Raiders is infamous because both teams had to cart players off the field. It was ugly.

It's shameful that these Astroturf monstrosities were ever called "fields" they are literally just concrete with a carpet
Your name runs off the tongue lol
And it's harder to maintain + more expensive but people still insist on using it
Especially the turf at Veterans stadium.Where Philadelphia used to play.
its almost as if people routinely put profit and entertainment above health and needs
@@nekogibson2679 I think today's turf in all stadiums is a new synthetic type turf.I remember some players being wired for sound and complaining about tiny pieces of rubber getting in their eyes. But that's part of the evolution.Gone is turf being like a sidewalk w/ carpet.Good for them.
Just yesterday I had a football game, I play for a small d3 college, and a kid from the other team got paralyzed just before half time. To see something like that happen in real time, in person, is incredibly scary, and I wish him all the luck in the world
That’s sounds terrible hope he’s ok do you have an update on him?
I witnessed the same thing getting ready to play in line hockey. Guy hit the boards head first at an odd angle. Paralyzed and was flown to university of Penn Hospital. Sad
I went to elementary-high school with Brian Mitchell’s daughter. He’s one of the most genuine guys who is so humble about his success. Awesome seeing you cover the craziest game of his career.
I was the contractor that built his House in Vienna in 1992. Great guy.
Mitchell also went on to be a great Eagle. Hell of a player
Dispite Brain being a redskin, when he came to philly we absolutely loved him, and cherished every moment we had him. He is a great guy I got to talk to him for a few and got his autograph. Real nice guy
Can't say it's surprising Buddy Ryan coached a team in this game. He was the DC for the Bears, and their match up against the Raiders in 1984 was a brutal battle with many big injuries for both teams.
Fun Fact: Brian Mitchell later in his career went to play for Philadelphia, than a couple years later, went to *another* division rival, the New York Giants. He is the all time leader for punt return yards, for the Eagles currently.
"Mitchell... Mitchell... Mitchell... Mitchell... Mitchell... Mitchell... Mitchell... Mitchell... Mitchell...Mitchell... Mitchell... Mitchell... Mitchell... Mitchell... Mitchell... Mitchell... Mitchell... Mitchell... MITCHELL... MITCHELL... MITCHELL!!!" - Joe Buck

It pained me to lose him to the giants, I was very young then but it really hurt my family and most eagle fans that day.
Brian Mitchell cohosts a radio show on WJFK - The Fan out of DC from 10am to 2pm eastern on weekdays. It should be streamable for people not in the DC market. He provides some good insights from a player perspective.
Where’s the “fun” part?
The road to winning SB XXVI the next season began with this game. The players have all said that. This was a huge motivator for the '91 Redskins- quietly one of the most dominant teams ever in NFL history (highest DVOA of all time).
Gibbs at this point has created a dynasty team in NASCAR.
from Theismann and Riggins to Stewart and Busch. Joe Gibbs is probably one of the greatest sports figures of all time.

All those injuries came after hitting that damn astroturf
Exactly. The Vet had the worst turf in the NFL after the final old turf was installed in 1988, but the groundsmen did a piss poor job installing it. It already surpassed the Astrodome which was already as bad as the Vet.
Plus, the old AstroTurf was just like playing on concrete with no padding.
It's shameful that these Astroturf monstrosities were ever called "fields" they are literally just concrete with a carpet
The return hit was not from turf contact
They got Griffeyed
I wonder if Sean Payton was inspired by the time Buddy Ryan put a price on Troy Aikman's head.
I still remember hearing stories from my dad. At the time he was in his mid 20’s and he still remembers being at this game. He might of been an Eagles fan but he even said that things got out of hand this was also his favorite game till Super Bowl 52 where I saw him cry tears of joy.
willing to bet that was the only time he cried in front of you, which just speaks to how badly the boomers were raised
@@housemana You would be correct
This should be the original Bountygate scandal. Philadelphia Eagles got away with it, but New Orleans Saints didn't in 2010
KTO rarely uploads, but when he does, it’s a gem every time!
Yes
It is
@War Productions yeah
He probably takes so long to upload because it takes a lot of time to do research
eh, 7-10 everytime ya, but he gets a little ahead of himself with what he thinks
TBH if I was Gibbs I woulda walked the team off the field after the second QB went down. By that point it was clearly on purpose and if the refs aren’t gonna do anything about a team openly trying to injure as many of your players as possible you gotta take their safety into your own hands even if it means forfeiting. I know it was a more physical game back then but at this point it’s not even football anymore, it’s just a brawl.
Like, during the rematch I honestly woulda been worried an Eagles player was gonna pull out a weapon on the field, shit was that far gone.
The players would have protested.
I don't think people today realize how brutal the NFL used to be. They were not the only team that did this stuff.
This happened a lot back then. If every team did it your way there would be no games being played
Of course it was an eagles game. They be playing "Blitz The League" on the field
And of course Gang Grene got their ass kicked when it meant something.
@@TPTGopher Best eagles ass kicking was when Tampa, specifically Ronde Barber shut the vet down, and handed them a loss at the opening of their new one. stadium the next season.

I knew that name was familiar lol
Especially after that leg injury.
That 80s/90s Skins team was absolutely LOADED. One of the greatest IMO.
In defense of Gibbs, he did have 2 proven guys ahead of him, however Norv Turner had Trent Green as a 3rd string QB with 2 guys ahead of him who were much worse. Then again Norv Turner picked his starters based on how much money they made and not on how well they played.
This was before the salary cap era. Teams had rediculous depth. The 49ers had Montana, Young and Bono on the same roster. Just rediculous
Football was actually worth watching back then.

You know a game’s brutal when it has the moniker “the body bag game”
As an Eagles fan, the House of Pain game from that same era is remembered much more fondly.
Growing up, my dad always told me about "Gang Green" and just how dominant they were. The two games he would always talk about, the "Body Bag Game" and the "House of Pain Game".
Neat facts: Remember that Jeff Fisher coached on the Eagles under Buddy Ryan just like w/the 1985 Bears. They played defense in a style designed to knock the opposing QB out of the game. It’s why Bears QB Jim McMahon was hit so hard & not healthy enough to win another SB for the Bears. By 1990 McMahon was playing for the Eagles & came in when Randall Cunningham was benched., which the owner used as the excuse to fire Ryan.
Nick Chubb is going to cost me a win in fantasy cause he didn’t run in to the end zone

I watched this game on MNF and to anybody who didn't see it...yeah, it was just as brutal as this shows if not more so. The Eagles had a fantastic defense and they turned the hitting up to 11 that night, it was vicious. Anytime any two teams in the NFC East of this period played each other, it was physical and intense, but this one was special. Buddy had those guys HYPED to destroy people. Parts of that Eagles defense were dirty, but mostly they were just incredibly talented. And I say that as a diehard Redskins fan. You had to be tough to play in the NFC East back then.

I was also fortunate enough to have visited Veterans' Stadium in my younger days, though I wasn't focused on the games back then as much as I was on the bag of stuff my mother brought to keep me occupied.
