We didn't really explore Port Laoise on this trip as it was just our destination for getting the taxi driver, but it's where my grandmother used to say she came from. I guess it's the only town that people might have heard of because her actual village does not even appear on most maps. Anyway, it was a very meaningful trip. This was great. My great-grandparents came over from Ireland around the same time. Both passed away in the 1930s at a young age. Great-grandpa was hit by a cab (of all things) in New York. My grandmother didn't have much family history since she grew up in an orphanage. My youngest is researching our family tree and making progress. It's wonderful you got to visit and physically see your roots. I hope to do the same someday.
What an incredible story! I am sorry that your great grandfather died so young and that your grandmother, too, was cut off from her family history. As I said in the video, I wasn't prepared for just how powerfully I would feel these connections to my long ago past. Just amazing.

That was very beautiful! What a blessing of an experience. The Irish line of my maternal grandmother is the proud one to this day but it was my Grandma's own Great Grandfather who came over from Ireland and somehow we lost what part he was from exactly! We know they married McDevitts from Donegal and so he may be from that county but historically there have been a lot of James Patrick Fitzsimmons! My other Irish lines go to Cavan, Leitrim, Longford, and Waterford counties but none of my lines of any nationality came over after the 19th century so we're rather thoroughly American. That must've been a magical experience. I thanfully still have a Great Grandmother alive and know the importance of her to me along with the Great Grandparents I never met. I wish I got to visit graves more often but none of them are remotely close to where I live. Thank you for sharing this lovely video

That was very beautiful! What a blessing of an experience. The Irish line of my maternal grandmother is the proud one to this day but it was my Grandma's own Great Grandfather who came over from Ireland and somehow we lost what part he was from exactly! We know they married McDevitts from Donegal and so he may be from that county but historically there have been a lot of James Patrick Fitzsimmons! My other Irish lines go to Cavan, Leitrim, Longford, and Waterford counties but none of my lines of any nationality came over after the 19th century so we're rather thoroughly American.
That must've been a magical experience. I thanfully still have a Great Grandmother alive and know the importance of her to me along with the Great Grandparents I never met. I wish I got to visit graves more often but none of them are remotely close to where I live. Thank you for sharing this lovely video
