- The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza presented an interview with former UPI reporter Joe Carter. Overnight editor for the southwestern division of United Press International (UPI) in 1963, Carter was aboard a White House Press bus in the Dallas motorcade when he heard shots fired in Dealey Plaza. He covered the aftermath at Parkland Memorial Hospital and Dallas Love Field. Years later, he became a speechwriter for President Lyndon Johnson. The program was moderated by Curator Stephen Fagin. This presentation took place at the Museum on April 26, 2024.

Thank you Stephen Fagin for another wonderful oral history.
So glad you were able to record this man's story for posterity.
The "knoll" story is a gem. So glad we can hear these tidbits come to life. Smith was a god at UPI and in the White House, but I am fascinated to hear this origin story that has that little unexpected twist that the term did not originate in his head.
Thanks for another great conversation. I hope I am that approachable and funny at age 91.
This is the best one of these shows I have ever seen - and they ALL are excellent.
I really enjoyed this interview of Joe Carter by Stephen Fagin. I love hearing these "first-hand" stories! 😀
Us too!
Thank you, Mr. Carter. You are a credit to your profession and your country.
Yep, the press bus was 13 vehicles back from the President’s limo… 🤣🤣🤣 no press in the front as there usually would be 😬
Jackie was a class act.
I never liked the term knoll lol, I call it the embankment or grassy hill
The term "knoll" has become famous (appropriately so) as the repository of bad theories.

Well thank God Stephen King put it to bed for us…. I can sleep well now 🤣🤣
