This clip is from one of the greatest performances of Otello I have ever seen. By this time Vickers had the role "in his bones" and it was Scotto's debut iin the role. When it was broadcast Vickers was interviewed and acknowledged that Scotto 's performance was a revelation for a debut role. When I first saw the DVD I was glad that my memories did not play me false: the performance was everything that I remembered and morel!
Remarkable Scotto = perfection. Total commitment to the vocal and physical acting. The beautiful changes in color in her voice changing with her emotions is pure genius!
A light coloratura. She threw caution to the wind and dove into these heavy roles to greater or lesser degree successfully. A superb actress. I saw her Butterfly in the Park in the 70's . Impressive. I cannot say that her acting abilities overcame that horrible wobble . It was very hard to listen to. She had a short time at greatness. RIP
Sheer elegance , beauty , artistry . My brother gave me his ticket unbelievable performance !!! Vickers as well as Scotto and MacNeil were tremendous ❤️
What a performance, what a production! Scotto... even if she had done nothing else in her carreer and we had only these 10 minutes to remember her by, they would still be enough to rank her among the top sopranos of the century!
O no? Zeffirelli grandioso.
Amazing interpretation! I enjoyed this duet with tension and angst, just as it should when the music and the drama are really brought to life. Vickers and Scotto may have somewhat unconventional voices, but what great singing and dramatic expression they can deliver both with their voices and bodies!
I find myself so utterly drawn in my Scotto's acting/singing (they are the same with her) that it's difficult to watch this scene. One feels actual alarm for Desdemona.
Through dumb luck I got a ticket for this performance. Scotto a beautiful elegant Desdemona . Vickers was stunning in his performance . Vocally and stage presence / acting . The fact that Domingo ever sang Otello is a a joke .
Strepitoso Otello!!! Grazie
This was one of those Live From The MET Telecasts & Scotto is simply awesome here in both her singing & characterization the latter of which may be the most varied & detailed I have ever seen for this character. Vickers understandably matches her work totally. But I will say the Afro is a bit much.
Sublime in every way. Of course Domingo had a more beautiful voice for Otello, and Fleming for Desdemona; but Vickers and Scotto are making it seem like it's happening for the first time before your eyes.
Conte Anckarstrom/Renato: From your thumbnail your appearance is a joke. Vickers fro is fine. Just glad he doesn’t have a comb sticking out of it. Now get back to the performance.
I wish I could see Scotto as Desdemona in a full performance .At least I will watch her as Mimi (1977 MET),Violetta(1973,with José Carreras as Alfredo ) and Musetta(1982 MET.Mimi and Rodolfo are Teresa Stratas and José Carreras).😂
This is part of a complete and full Otello from the MET. And there's at least three-four more DVDs with her from the MET: Puccini's Il Trittico (she's great in Il Tabarro and DIVINE as Suor Angelica!), Manon Lescaut (1980), Verdi's Don Carlo (1981) and Zandonai's Francesca Da Rimini from 1984. But her greatest live DVD is L' Elisir d' Amore from 1967 in Italy.
Daniel Vasquez You’re right! I don’t know why people think it’s racist. To me, it actually illustrates why Otello is an outsider, why he’s hated by Iago and others, why he so easily falls into the trap. I just saw a performance at the Met with no makeup, and it made no sense. Why is Otello an outsider now; did he cut his pinky or something? It makes no sense.
@@wotan10950 Otello even asks is it because I'm black that I sense uneasiness for lack of a better word. ? How can the makeup not have the character be black? It's essential!! Then make Porgy a red curly haired Irishman withy ivory skin and freckles. Make bess a man instead of a "birthing person "
Scotto is completely defeated by Desdemona here. Dramatically and vocally. She tries to fake it but it becomes a cringe fest. Vickers convices dramatically but vocally is weak.
Dubbel Henke interesting how a scene, a singer complete different emotions create for the audience.. for you it’s not impressive ... for me it’s a the only way I wanna see this scene ..))) made me breathless and touched my soul ...

Jon Vickers, one of the greatest of all Otellos. His singing his simply sublime.

I don't think we'll EVER see the likes of portrayal and intensity again. Completely on the edge of your seat! PHENOMENAL!!

It's released. $30 at the Met Opera Shop. The sound is excellent stereo and the film quality is A ++.
A must in everyone's Opera library.

would've given a lot to see this performance live!!!!
Pammy Jones I did see it live, but I was maybe 20 years old, there were no subtitles, and I really didn’t understand it. I could kick myself now!
GRANDIOSSO ARTIST
Deux interprètes sublimes !

Vickers and Scotto.. That is what I hope for a studio Otello.
Glorious singing and acting by both artists..
I do love how they're both representing different schools of pantomime. both equally compelling, though I prefer Vickers' a tad more.

One of the most dramatically mesmorizing pieces I've seen/heard !

I just got betrayed by this technology. What was just attributed to me was an error. Sorry. Guess I got carried away by this immense performance.
Magnificent.
i saw this performance ...
Might it be possible to post the entire opera soon?

"Dio ti giocondi, o sposo"
Otello - Jon Vickers
Desdemona - Renata Scotto
Otello - Act III
Metropolitan Opera, 1978
c. James Levine
Oh my God, Vickers' wig... terrific singing and acting but I can't stop laughing at his hairdo. Totally Soul Train, in fact it's 1978.
Vickers did his own makeup but I'm not sure if he picked his own wig. The Met had/has a very thorough wig dept. Soul Train.😄😄😄😄

Immenses chanteurs, immenses acteurs. Ô temps suspend ton vol...
RIP Renata Scotto (1934-2023).
This role suited Scotto well. She should have sung more lyric roles and stayed away from the high coloratura soprano roles.
i mean, buy it now before its banned by the triggered (y'all know its coming...)

Scotto totally contemporary in her acting style - Vickers trapped in the 19th centuary
Scotto is completely defeated by Desdemona here. Dramatically and vocally. She tries to fake it but it becomes a cringe fest. Vickers convices dramatically but vocally is weak.
Can you imagine a voice this light singing Norma and Gioconda the following season? I can’t quite get over it and it’s been 40 years

Very good voice, Vickers' but lousy acting.
