How foetunate that the camera was there to record these unique, magnificent singers in two of their greatest roles;Mr Vickers with his heroic, clarion and slightly abrasive tenor illustrating for me how the "real" Otello would have sounded, and the MAGNIFICENT Renata Scotto singing superbly and bringing all her intuitive acting skills to the part of Desdemona.I wish I had seen these (truly) legendary singers "live" but I am so grateful that they were caught on film for posterity, where future generations will be able to observe what truly great opera singing is all about.
It is so amazing to watch these two consummate artists interacting with each other. Not only the musicality and feeling in their voices, but the energy that occurs between them -- one feels almost as if one is intruding on an intimate moment, as they sing of the nature of their love and reach into each other's hearts to find themselves there. It's almost too private to bear. It makes the ensuing tragedy all the more poignant.
The greatest post WWII tenor and one of the greatest tenors of all time. His physical release was astonishing, by the way. I can't think of another tenor with such freedom. The technique is different but I'm reminded of how utterly free of tension Nilsson looked when she sang
In my early opera-going days, I saw Vickers and Scotto together on the Met stage in Otello, before the days of subtitles. They were monumental, although neither was the last word in vocal refinement. But they both knew how to bring out the drama of the characters.
Superb - neither of these singers were in the first flush of youth, far from it. Do we have artists today capable of such wonderful delivery I ask myself.

Bellissimo....il tempo x i grandi cantanti si ferma .avvincete e coinvolgente interpretazione ..
One of the best Otello's ever. Very much under appreciated.
I don't feel he was underappreciated. He was widely recognized as a giant in his field and one of the greatest Otellos ever.

Sich a mightfull Othello voice. A wonderfull loving man ….. snd on his side this wonderfull sweetest Desdemona. Real life
Besides wonderful singing, Renata is magnificent and so classy. Vickers has always been an amazing Otello. Bravissimi!

Sir Jon, Knight of the Long Breath
Splendida la Renata...uno dei più grandi soprani di tutti i tempi!

Grande Vickers.

muchas gracias por postear esta belleza!!!! Esta forma de cantar se extingue y ya solo quedan sombras de esa glora artistica que solo servia la música
Magnificent!! Sounds like an actual recording off a CD!
FANTASTICI❤❤❤
Precioso.La Scotto es única
Two great singer-actors. See both of them with Macneil in the 1978 video live from the Met Otello! Fantastic
Magnifique vickers divine scotto ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Qué bonito
Grazie!!!
სასწაულია!
Bravo!
...Bravi!!!
Saw this on PBS the night after seeing Vickers as Florestan in Chicago. Great artist.
So was Scotto, although I never cared for her sound --
Vickers, era già vocalmente in declino,Scotto era ancora in voce.
Comunque due giganti del bel canto👏👏👏
Superb and both these singers were not in the first flush of youth, far from it. Do we have artists of this calibre nowadays I ask myself.
Thank God for video/audio digital preservation ( UA-cam, etc )
I love the way he looks at her at about 7:00.
I’m so glad this clip is back on UA-cam. Does the UN still host such musical events?

Richard Cassilly was the greatest otello with amazing diminuendo, singing this live in theaters countless times blasting, only where required.
...It's good to see someone remembering so great a singer and so sadly forgotten - Richard Cassilly.
Maybe he should be remembered more than he is, and maybe he was your favorite Otello, but to say he was the "greatest" just sounds foolish
Couldn't hold a candle to Vickers, Vinay, Del Monaco etc. or even McCracken and Domingo.
Silly comment, both vinay and del monaco were far better, the two best.then we had renato zenelli, vickers, and domingo to a lesser extent
Ese director d orquesta está hasta las webas
