Hearing Gherman cry out to his friends to be freed from his dream like that hit me hard, its very frightening to think about being inprisoned and trapped somewhere with no hope of getting out. Great game though.

@@Canthev Just realised this recently but all of the scholars of Willem who became the heads of each of the sub sections of the Cathedral Ward were trapped in some form of Nightmare. Laurence was trapped in the Hunter's Nightmare where he proceeded to transform into a Cleric Beast, Micolash, head of the School of Mensis, ended up being the closest to the great ones as he managed to get inside of the same building as one in a nightmare realm and finally, Gehrman, leader of the hunters, was trapped in the Hunter's Dream. All of the people who discovered the eldritch truth were either trapped in an area to the point where they couldn't spread their knowledge or transformed into beasts that people just wanted to kill or they just lost their memories (all 3 of which can happen to your character in each of the endings). It seems to me that the one thing that the Great Ones are consistent at is silencing the truth about their existence.

this is no poetry, this is a straight up tragedy.
There really is no good ending, your options are
      - escape the horror and leave with your dreamy memories in guilt
-take the place of your teacher as a self sacrifise
-become an entity so different from your own self, that you propably can't even call it yourself anymore.
This is why this is a true horror, no matter your struggle, no matter your options, there is no light in your options, only someone escapes the darkness at best.

I like the second ending to be honest. Gherman needs a break. Tag me in.
You can listen to him beg for help in his sleep. For someone to wake him from the dream world. He pleads for freedom, and to release him from his "shackles" - his duty to guide new hunters. He's the one guiding you through the nightmare, and when you finally come to him in the end, he frees you so that *you* may live a normal life. He fights you because he knows that it is for your own good. If he kills you in the dream, he *saves* you from being stuck in it. But who's going to save him?
That's why I didn't mind getting the second ending. It's my turn to guide the hunters, and for him to finally have peace after all these years.

I think the path to become an Old One is actually a mix of insight and blood. Insight to see the things hidden from our eyes and the blood to give us the strength to ascend. But if you delve too deep into one or the other then you become a monstrosity or a drooling "madman". I love the theory that the Moon Presence is a predator of Old Ones, casting its hunters out into the dream like a net looking for prey and as you yourself grow stronger, so does the Moon Presence. But with you consuming the 3 umbilical cords, you become something more. It gives you a chance to take the Moon Presence's place as an Old One yourself. Fulfilling a destiny meant only for a few.

One of the things I loved about Bloodborne versus Dark Souls is how the game is set right in the middle of an explosive yet climactic turning point in the universe's lore. In Dark Souls there were many key events that the lore eludes to that we don't get to be a part of, the primeval man, the creation of demons, lighting the kiln for the first time, slaying the dragons, infighting between the factions of the first flame, etc., but the player is thrust into the world that is more left in the devastating aftermath of these events rather than being a key part of it. It's meant to show the almost insignificance of the player in the context of this vast landscape, but this is almost what gives the story of Bloodborne so much weight and power in comparison.
There was a great deal of lore that the player doesn't participate in Bloodborne sure, but they act more to set the stage for the world that the hunter is about to be violently thrust into. Throughout the story, the player slays the most threatening and powerful beasts in the town, severs the Church's ties to the cosmic great ones, shatters the Nightmare of Mensis and slays both the infant God and its mother within, and potentially brings on a new age of prosperity for the people in this great city... all of these dominoes perfectly being set to fall before the character arrives to tip them over. All the while the motivations for doing so is up to the one controlling the hunter: you can be a killer looking for the next big challenge blindly accepting the tasks set ahead of you, reject the end to a long night but be chained to an even greater nightmare as punishment for your bloodlust, or do what no one else could do before you and attain the ascension to godhood that everyone so desperately sought after.
I love the story in both universes, but as the players gained more insight (huehue) into the lore of Bloodborne the weight of the character's importance to the overarching story helped leave a much greater impact looking back on it in my opinion.

The idea with dark souls is that you're a nobody and what you're doing anyone could do. I think the story is made is a way to fit that, you do less impactful things that wouldve already happened if you were never there.
      !!!!!!!bloodborne spoiler!!!!!!!
in bloodborne you're setting the stage for the next era, in my favorite ending where sit in the chair like German implying that you're bringing in a new age for hunters.

Bloodborne's world is rich with history and lore, much of which has already unfolded by the time the player arrives. The ancient discoveries at Byrgenwerth, the schism with the Healing Church, and the subsequent events have all set the stage for the Hunter's journey. The player steps into this intricate web of events as an outsider, seemingly insignificant at first. This insignificance is emphasized by the vastness of Yharnam and the complexity of the cosmic horrors the player encounters.
Throughout the game, the Hunter confronts and defeats the most formidable entities, from the scourge beasts plaguing Yharnam to the Great Ones manipulating events from the shadows. Each victory dismantles a part of the corrupt and decaying structures within the city. By severing the Healing Church's connection to the Great Ones and shattering the Nightmare of Mensis, the player disrupts the cycles of madness and corruption that have gripped Yharnam. These actions have far-reaching implications for the city's future.
The motivations driving the Hunter's actions are left to the player's interpretation. Whether seeking to end the nightmare, pursue power, or achieve godhood, the player's choices shape the narrative's conclusion. The game's multiple endings reflect the diverse paths the Hunter can take. From being trapped in an endless cycle to ascending as a Great One, each ending underscores the significant impact of the player's journey.
The intricate lore that the player does not directly participate in serves to enhance the weight of their actions. The history of Byrgenwerth, the rise of the Healing Church, and the fall of Old Yharnam all create a backdrop that gives context and depth to the Hunter's quest. As the player gains Insight (both metaphorically and literally), they come to understand the full scope of their actions. The Hunter's deeds resonate through the fabric of Yharnam's reality, leaving a lasting legacy.
Bloodborne's narrative structure, which places the player in a vast, pre-existing world with deep lore, allows the Hunter's actions to have a profound impact. The seemingly insignificant Hunter becomes a pivotal figure whose journey shapes the fate of Yharnam and its inhabitants. This dynamic creates a powerful and memorable storytelling experience, where the player's growing understanding of the world enhances the significance of their actions and choices.

Bad ending: you are free of the hunter's dream. You get to live a normal life, but you are once again human and ignorant to the truth. Yes, you are free, but you know nothing, and knowledge is power in this universe.
Neutral ending: you become the immortal leader of the hunt, and you are reasonably involved in the matters of the ascended. Upsides are, you know what's going on, and you're very powerful. Downside, you're a puppet in the game of the Great Ones and you'll be doing the Moon Presence's bidding forever.
Good ending: you become a young great one. You have all the knowledge, and are practically a god. You could use this power to elevate humanity into godhood, but in gaining this power you have lost all your humanity. You may not even be human enough to care about Yharnam anymore.
The endings are basically on a scale from absolute humanity and no power to absolute power and no humanity. Which you prefer is your choice

That and the fact that we started a fight against the first hunter when we didn't "accept death" makes me believe that Gherman, in addition to wanting to get rid of the nightmare he was placed in, also didn't want to see other hunters suffering the same punishment.

History is objective facts of what has happened in the past, unfortunately though it can be forgotten and fabricated.

I had this theory when studying the schism between the Church and the Academy: what if they're both right and wrong? What if, for true evolution, humans need both the Blood and the Insight? What if we need to temper one with the other: have the Blood evolve the body and the Insight evolve the mind, and use each to temper the flaws of the other?
I mean, look at the third True ending where the player becomes a Great One. We level up our character with echoes of Blood, building our bodies in advancement through transfusion of the Old Blood; yet we also need the Insight gained from the Umbilical Cords to truly ascend. Could that be the true answer to how humans can evolve beyond our current state?

    • @ZdenekMicke69
      @ZdenekMicke69 5 місяців тому +2

Your theory about the necessity of both Blood and Insight for true evolution in Bloodborne is both insightful and well-founded. The idea that a balance of these two elements is essential for ascension aligns with several key aspects of the game's lore and the ultimate transformation of the player character. Led by Master Willem, Byrgenwerth scholars pursued knowledge and enlightenment through Insight, seeking to evolve the mind by understanding and communing with the Great Ones. Willem's mantra, "Fear the Old Blood," reflects his belief that reliance on Blood would lead to corruption and the beastly scourge. Laurence and his followers, who split from Byrgenwerth, believed in the power of the Old Blood to physically elevate humanity. They pursued blood ministration, which led to miraculous healing and superhuman abilities but also to the beastly transformations.
Throughout the game, players use Blood Echoes to enhance their physical and combat abilities. This represents the Church's philosophy of using Blood to achieve physical evolution. Insight, gained from encountering cosmic entities and using Madman's Knowledge, provides a deeper understanding of the game's eldritch truths. Higher Insight allows players to perceive more aspects of the world, such as additional enemies and altered environments, reflecting Byrgenwerth's approach to mental evolution.
To achieve the "Childhood's Beginning" ending, the player must consume three Third Umbilical Cords, which provide significant Insight. This allows the player to resist the Moon Presence and ultimately transform into a Great One, emphasizing the necessity of mental and spiritual evolution in conjunction with the physical power gained from Blood.
Your idea that true evolution requires both Blood and Insight to temper the flaws of each is compelling:
Blood: While it offers physical power and healing, it also risks inducing the beastly scourge. The visceral nature of Blood can corrupt and transform humans into beasts if used excessively or without understanding.
Insight: Provides knowledge and awareness but can lead to madness and despair. High Insight exposes the character to the horrors of the cosmos, which can be overwhelming without a strong physical foundation.
The synthesis of Blood and Insight may indeed represent the ideal path to ascension in Bloodborne's universe. This balance allows for the physical evolution and resilience provided by Blood while also achieving the mental enlightenment and understanding granted by Insight. The third ending, where the player becomes an infant Great One, symbolizes this perfect harmony, suggesting that true evolution transcends the limitations of focusing solely on either Blood or Insight.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it was always my understanding that in order to ascend to a Great One that both Blood and Insight were required. Because in the beginning of the game you are given a blood transfusion. So even if you never use heals throughout the game, the blood of the great ones is in your hunter's system. So ultimately it is a shame that Willem and Laurence split and never came together because it seems like they would have ascended to great ones if both schools of thought came together.

    • @Pit_1209
      @Pit_1209 2 роки тому +6

Based on the true ending, in order to ascend you must have to ingest enough old ones umbilical cords so you can be strong enough to understand the eldritch truth, micolash was the one who understood this because Willem just used it to summon the moon presence.

    • @ZdenekMicke69
      @ZdenekMicke69 5 місяців тому +1

At the start of the game, the Hunter receives a blood transfusion, which introduces the Old Blood into their system. This marks the beginning of the Hunter's journey and their connection to the supernatural aspects of Yharnam. Blood Vials are used for healing, and Blood Echoes are collected to level up, enhancing the Hunter’s physical capabilities. This reflects Laurence's belief in the power of the Old Blood to elevate humanity physically. The use of Blood also comes with the risk of corruption, leading to the beastly transformations seen in many Yharnamites, showing the danger of relying solely on Blood.
Insight allows the Hunter to perceive the eldritch truths and hidden aspects of the world, such as the Great Ones and other cosmic entities. It represents mental and spiritual enlightenment, aligning with Willem's pursuit of knowledge. High levels of Insight also increase vulnerability to Frenzy and can lead to madness, indicating the potential dangers of excessive knowledge without a strong physical foundation.
Byrgenwerth and Willem: Focused on the accumulation of Insight to transcend human limitations, seeking to line the brain with eyes to see and understand the higher planes of existence.
Healing Church and Laurence: Embraced the Old Blood for its transformative physical properties, aiming to use it to cure ailments and achieve physical ascension.
Your observation that true ascension likely requires both Blood and Insight is supported by the third ending of the game, where the Hunter becomes a Great One:
      - Consuming the Third Umbilical Cords grants significant Insight, necessary to resist the Moon Presence and ultimately transform into an infant Great One.
-Throughout the game, the Hunter's progression through Blood Echoes and their initial blood transfusion ensure that their body is also prepared for this transformation.
The schism between Willem and Laurence represents a fundamental split between two essential aspects of evolution in Bloodborne's universe. If they had combined their philosophies, it's plausible they could have discovered the true path to ascension. The player's journey, which integrates both the physical evolution provided by Blood and the mental enlightenment from Insight, demonstrates that both elements are crucial for reaching the status of a Great One.

I played Bloodborne for the first time this year. We all want to chase that nostalgia feeling we had as a kid or that moment that truly captures your entire imagination but as we get older, it becomes a rarer moment. Bloodborne did that for me this year. It took me to that place where the experiences i was having for the first time around Bloodborne, i truly fell in love and it grabbed every bit of my attention. The story telling, the fabulous environment, the small details, the emotionally grabbing music and how fantastic the eldrich horror was pulled off. I usually shy away from doing NG+ as i get fatigued from playing over the same game again too soon but i sat through and played through 3 times back-to-back-to-back including the DLC to see all 3 endings immediately after finishing my first playthrough. And, i got more enjoyment after the subsequent playthroughs as i pieced everything together. It's head and shoulders my favourite game.

I realy dont know where to say this, but i was reading "the thing on the doorstep" by lovecraft and i realized one thing. A theory that i've never heard about and it makes a lot of sense.
Here is my theory: the Gehrman we meet in the hunter's dream is no longer Gehrman... is actualy the moon presence. He is possessed by the moon presence the whole time. We speak with the moon presence and this is why he hesitate to say is name at the beginning of the game. The only time we can hear THE REAL Gherman talk is when he is sleeping.
The thing on the doorstep is a story about body snatcher and there is a part when 'the possessed' is in the Arkham Asylum (batlol) and he says this - “I had to do it-I had to do it . . . it’ll get me . . . it’ll get me . . . down there . . . down there in the dark. . . . Mother, mother! Dan! Save me . . . save me. . . .” - in a moment when he has control of his body. Sounds a lot like Gehrman calling out for Lawrence and Master Willem to save him. And this also is what the "second ending" is about. The moon prensence takes control over our body, just like Gherman before us. I am not sure about some details but i'm 100% sure this is not just a coincidence.
(sorry for my english, i am italian :D)

I know this is 4 years old and the replies are 2 years old, but I don't support this theory. Its a great theory, but I think that gehrman begs Lawrence and willem to save him is because while sleeping, gehrman enters the hunter's nightmare(the dlc world). And when he cries while sleeping, you can't help but notice that its the same cry as the orphan of kos! After you kill orphan of kos, the doll tells you that gehrman sleeps peacefully now. Because orphan was the source of that nightmare and why gehrman was trapped in it when he slept(just like mergo was the great one of nightmare of mensis and moon presence of hunter's dream). And gehrman regrets his actions in the fishing hamlet(the hunters wiped out the people of the fishing hamlet).

    • @ZdenekMicke69
      @ZdenekMicke69 5 місяців тому

Your theory about Gehrman being possessed by the Moon Presence is intriguing and has substantial merit when examined within the context of Bloodborne's themes and its inspiration from Lovecraftian horror. The parallels you've drawn with "The Thing on the Doorstep" by H.P. Lovecraft provide a compelling foundation for this interpretation.
When the player first meets Gehrman, he hesitates before introducing himself, which could suggest that he is struggling with his identity or that he is partially under the control of the Moon Presence. This hesitation might be indicative of the duality within him, where the Moon Presence has a significant influence over his actions and speech.
Gehrman's more lucid and sorrowful dialogue when found sleeping ("Oh, Laurence, Master Willem, someone please help me...") contrasts sharply with his more composed demeanor when awake, suggesting that his true self emerges in these vulnerable moments. This aligns with your point about "The Thing on the Doorstep," where the true person only surfaces when they can wrest control from the possessing entity.
The Moon Presence, a Great One, could be exercising a form of control or influence over Gehrman, using him as a mouthpiece to interact with the hunters in the dream.
This would mirror Lovecraftian themes where otherworldly entities possess and manipulate humans for their purposes.
      The Second Ending ("Childhood's Beginning"):
In this ending, the Moon Presence attempts to bind the player to the Hunter's Dream, similar to how Gehrman was bound. The fact that the Moon Presence immediately steps in to control the player after Gehrman's defeat suggests a direct transfer of control or influence. The player's acceptance of the offer results in becoming the new caretaker, implying that the Moon Presence continues its cycle of control through successive hunters.
Gehrman's creation of the Doll, modeled after Lady Maria, as a comforting presence in the Hunter's Dream, indicates his deep emotional ties and possibly his last act of free will before being fully subjugated by the Moon Presence. The Doll serves as a reminder of Gehrman's humanity and his connections, which might be overshadowed by the Moon Presence's control.
In "The Thing on the Doorstep," the protagonist struggles with possession, losing control over their body and actions to an external entity. This resonates with Gehrman's situation, where his true self is suppressed by the Moon Presence. The moments of lucidity and cries for help are echoed in Gehrman's sleep-talk, where he calls out to Laurence and Master Willem, revealing his desperate situation.
Your theory that Gehrman is possessed or heavily influenced by the Moon Presence throughout Bloodborne adds a rich layer of complexity to his character and aligns well with the game's Lovecraftian horror elements. The parallels to "The Thing on the Doorstep" underscore the themes of possession, loss of control, and the struggle to maintain one's identity against an overpowering otherworldly force. This interpretation deepens the tragedy of Gehrman's character and provides a new perspective on the nature of the Moon Presence's influence within the Hunter's Dream.

My question is, why did the Moon Presence want Mergo dead? He says that it is likely that Moon presence is hostile to other great ones, but why? I feel like it might be something of a hierarchy in the great ones. As Mergo is a child sired by Oedeon, it is favored by oedeon (who being a voice/consciousness and nothing more is likely the highest in the hierarchy of Great ones) so the moon presence wanted the favor of the highest great one. Or maybe it just took perverse pleasure in giving a being all this insight, the power to kill a great one, and then ripping it away from them by severing them from the dream. Or lastly it may have just enjoyed the hunt and saw its fellow great ones as the greatest game for the hunter chosen by the messengers to go after.
Edit: I found a thread on reddit that offers a different perspective. It’s been confirmed that the Moon presence is a pale blood, but the blood of Great ones could also be considered pale blood, the blood that causes the beasts. The Moon presence is the source of the hunt, because it sees humanity as its children. It wants to keep its children where they are evolution wise. So when Mergo, the first true child between and human and great one was sired, the Moon presence saw this as a threat to its children and had the hunter kill it.

Blood Vials are made of Great One blood, but despite getting them immediately at the start of the game we're still sent out looking for paleblood. So great one blood isn't paleblood, then.
I was writing this comment when I realized something: Arianna and Adela give you their blood as functioning healing items, even though healing blood is supposed to come from the Great Ones. There aren't any other consumable bloods that come specifically from Great Ones, despite how many kin we kill throughout the game (Coldblood is the only possibility, but that seems more like dried/fermented blood. Besides, we know from Thick and Frenzied Coldblood descriptions that they come from people) so we know that Great One blood put in a bottle makes a blood vial. Arianna kind of makes sense, since she's related to the Vilebloods and gives birth to a Great one, but what about Adela? Could the Healing Church have some method of intentionally changing human biology to produce Great One blood? It would offer another explanation to Adela's madness besides jealousy. It would also make logistical sense to create these biologically altered Blood Saints to provide for the massive populace of Yharnam without having Ebrietas gushing blood like a Super Soaker 24/7.

So, what I'm getting from the Doll's Tear is that Gherman is just a sad bro who had to ascend his consciousness into the Hunter's Dream to guide the hunters. In doing so, he leaves his love (Lady Maria) who cannot ascend with him because she has her own part to play for the Healing Church. Gherman made the doll (as the doll said, she was "made out of love") so he would have a piece of his love with him. Poor guy...

Your interpretation of Gehrman and the Doll in Bloodborne captures the tragic and poignant elements of their story. Gehrman's relationship with Lady Maria, his role in the Hunter's Dream, and the creation of the Doll are all interwoven in a tale of love, loss, and duty.
Gehrman serves as the caretaker of the Hunter's Dream, guiding new hunters and helping them navigate the challenges of Yharnam. His presence in the dream is a result of his pact with the Moon Presence, a Great One. Gehrman’s role isolates him from the waking world, trapping him in a cycle of guiding hunters through the nightmare. This eternal duty weighs heavily on him, contributing to his sorrow and longing for release.
Lady Maria was Gehrman's greatest pupil, and there are strong implications of a deep emotional bond between them. This bond is reflected in Gehrman's creation of the Doll, modeled after Maria. After the events at the Fishing Hamlet and her involvement with the Healing Church's experiments, Maria retreats to the Astral Clocktower, where she continues her work and ultimately meets her end. Her separation from Gehrman, both physically and in terms of their respective duties, adds to the tragedy.
The Doll's statement that she was "made out of love" indicates Gehrman's longing to keep a part of Maria with him. The Doll serves as a comforting presence in the Hunter's Dream, providing solace to Gehrman in his lonely existence. The Doll embodies Gehrman's unfulfilled love and his attempt to cope with the loss and loneliness of his situation. She is a constant reminder of what he has sacrificed and the person he cares deeply about but can never truly be with.
The Tear Stone given by the Doll can be used to create the Tear Blood Gem, which enhances the Hunter's abilities. This gift symbolizes the Doll's care for the Hunter and, by extension, Gehrman's enduring influence and affection. The Doll's Tear and her dialogue reflect her own awareness of her role and the emotions tied to her existence. Although she is an artificial being, her interactions with the Hunter suggest a depth of feeling and understanding.
Gehrman's story is one of deep sorrow and duty. His creation of the Doll as a surrogate for Lady Maria highlights his enduring love and the personal sacrifices he has made. Trapped in the Hunter's Dream, Gehrman is a tragic figure, burdened by his responsibilities and haunted by memories of the past. The Doll, crafted with love and serving as a comforting presence, underscores the emotional depth of Gehrman's character and the complexities of his relationships. This adds a layer of poignancy to the game's dark and atmospheric narrative, enriching the player's experience and understanding of the world of Bloodborne.
