    I give ya credit, you fixed it. When I was a kid, I drove over a water shutoff, and bent the crank. If I would have tried this, it may have saved my parents from buying a new mower. Lighten up people, it's a damn mower, either way a new crank is almost the cost of the new mower.

    For a little inginuity and a lot of hammer, you saved the customer a lawnmower. Great job.

    I have THREE JD lawn mowers which I cannot use for having bent shaft. Each time I was told that I would have to replace the whole motor, so A new mower was purchased. NOW I will try to repair one tomorrow. You have given me hope that I will not have to replace my mowers every year or so. ( Five mowers in five years, three with bent crankshafts.)

    Like I just told nickernosher I had nothing to lose. It was ether this or they buy a new mower. Its still running and the people told me it never has run so smooth. Thanks for the comments.

    Thanks for the vid. Recently picked up a bent crank John Deere JS48 (briggs and stratton 875 engine) for $0 that had less than 10 hrs use from new. 15 or so good whacks from my sledgehammer and a good eye it was 'fixed'. No vibration at all. A+++ will recneck repair again.

    Wow I can't believe this worked for me. Ran over a hard stump and the crank shaft bent really badly to the point it wasnt able to turn over with the pull start. Did this method still wasnt able to get it straight, so I took off the blade and the holder and I had to torch the tip for a few mins and then gave it a good hard hit and it straightened out better then normal. Thanks for the tip!

    Fixed my mower like this but with demounted blade and with a woodbeam to protect the shaft. It worked perfectly. Thank you!

    Hit rock, heavy craftsmen 4.75hp. bent the blade bad, mangled it, took it off, and motor wouldn't let me pull cord hardly at all, BENT SHAFT. you tube helps again, thx for vid. I used that cool trick of the pointer on a log to center it, then wacked shaft with sledge, with blade off. this let me hit it at a little different angle than on the side of the blade. I then straightened blade with sledge mostly, then put it on, then bent it better with big pipe wrench on ends. runs with slight vibe

    • @n3yy299
      @n3yy299 10 років тому +2

      well i did it . I had to give it a few more whacks than in the vid and I couldnt get it perfectly straight but i did get it better than before. The mower runs well with much less vibration , just a small amount. It is a Honda mower and engine, that crank is hard, i couldnt get it to bend back easy as you did.

    You may not recommend doing it but I did (took the blade off first) with a regular hammer... and worked!!! LOL! Lawnmower working like a charm now. Thanks

    Thanks for this video! I was able to save my lawn mower (and about $400) by fixing it using this method! My only investment was buying a sledge hammer. I wound up taking the blade off of it first, and beating on the squared bushing that you bolt the blade onto. It took a fair bit longer than yours (shaft was a bit more bent), but I got it done.

  • @baddoggie101
    @baddoggie101 12 років тому

    Inspired by your banging with a hammer, I checked out my mower and found it had a bent shaft and with a couple of good solid blows it is largely straightened out. Now it runs as smooth as silk. Main problem was getting a solid hit without bouncing the hammer off of the deck. Just hope I didn't crack the crank or damage the bearings. Still that is better than disposing of an otherwise good mower.

    Good result! I had the same problem on honda, I changed Cranked shaft and oil sealing gland, it was a half prise of this honda. The belt gear has jumped on some teeth and tab of Cranked shaft was destroyed. It was result of catching of a metal pipe.

    due to the mechanics of a blade striking an object it will most likely bend the shaft in a direction such that you can strike the side of the blade as was seen in this video.

  • @jimbass7867

    All long shaft mowers are prone to this damage. But, I have even fixed the short shaft Toros with bent crank. You absolutely have to out them on a lathe and use torch heat to bring them in. Often it is just better to replace the crank. labor cost can get out of hand real quick. But, then again, my mower repair days were over 35 years ago.

  • @bpark10001
    @bpark10001 7 років тому +1

    Been There Done That. You need to remove the blade (but keep the blade mount on) so you can hit from any direction with the hammer. With the blade on, you can only hit from 2 directions.

  • @ShawnCFarm
    @ShawnCFarm  15 років тому +1

    And just waht kind of force do you think it had on it when it hit the metal pipe? I did warn not to try this. It worked and the people didn't have to buy a new mower, so they had nothing to lose and I put $40 bucks in my pocket. I would have used a pipe on the end of the crank but I didn't have any way of holding the engine. Thank for the comment anyway.

    The flathead motors have the crankcase pressure pipe alongside the muffler.Keep it up so oil wont travel over to the carb.side and possibly hydraulic lock engine. If your not sure if yours is a flathead ,just drain the oil,and eliminate all question.

    Here's where swing back blades are useful. Instead of bending the crank it will allow for the blade to kick in from the impact. Having the stiff fixed setup is going to have this end result every day of the week.

  • @ShawnCFarm
    @ShawnCFarm  14 років тому

    @MarkLGandy If you can find a way to hold the lawnmower try using a long pipe on the end of the shaft after you remove the blade. I think it would work better and be more controlled. If it was free it will be fun ether way lol

    My Quantum engine uses the same filter. What i found was B+S said it used a prefilter foam pad. I guess it was missing when new. Those things load up fast and the foam slows it down. They also told me do NOT oil the foam. Hope this helps.

    had a Briggs/Stratton for just over THIRTY-EIGHT YEARS with 3.5 hp {Murray} mower ran/worked well/hit close to 300 rocks, steel beams, 3" logs that stopped engine dead = never bent the crank or broke any part of the engine, (finally just wore out). NOW with FOUR MURRAY / BRIGGS/STRATTON - 5# +/- TORQUE = TWO DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH POWER TO GET OUT OF WET PAPER BAG - ONE HIT A 2" LOG X 8" =KILLED ENGINE AND FIVE PIECES FLEW OFF OF MOTOR, LAST ONE HIT A 3" ROCK = KILLED ENGINE - BROKE BOTTOM OF ENGINE(SUMP) - BENT CRANKSHAFT - OTHER BROKEN PARTS ?? YET ""WARRENTEE WILL NOT COVER ANY OF THIS 'FIVE WEEK OLD NEW' ENGINE"". AND TO ADD SALT TO THE PAINFUL WOUND IT IS PAST THE 30 DAY RETURN PERIOD TO "WALMART". the FOUR LAST ENGINES SPOKEN OF HERE THE FIRST THREE WERE UNDER 30 DAY RETURN PERIOD EXCEPT THE LAST ONE. BRIGGS AND STRATTON SMALL ENGINES ARE SIMPLY NOT WHAT THEY WERE A WHILE BACK. HOW ABOUT GETTING THE OLDER "MAYTAG" GROUP OF PEOPLE BUILDING MOWERS. regards,

    Just god-smacked my Craftsman self-propel, electric key start mower. It starts and runs, lower rpm/ power and nearly quits if you load it by trying to cut grass. Hhhhmmm? I spun the blade and did not see obvious bent shaft. Shop said shaft is about $20, but about an hour labor - $62 if that is what is needed. I rebuilt my Volvo B20B engine, wonder if I can do this myself. New, these mowers are about $369. It also has some other noises when running. It hit hard on a stump, quit instantly, so surprised it runs at all. Winter project! Waiting to hear from shoo next week.

    If all of the 'wet sock' and any other debris has been removed from the blade and shaft, and it shakes more than before, then there is a good chance the shaft is bent. You could remove and check the 'balance' of the blade to be sure. Hang the blade with a screw driver through the center hole. If it consistently drops more to one side, then the blade needs to be sharpened a little more on that side to remove weight. Unbalanced blade can cause a shake as well as a bent shaft. Check that first.

  • @HarleyFXS
    @HarleyFXS 9 років тому +2

    Just proof that Briggs & Stratton has gotten cheap compared to the old ones. I have straightened many of these shafts and me and a friend took one to work and used a hydraulic press, and it snapped right off before it would bend at all. They used to be made of cast iron, and if you can bend it with a sledge hammer, they must be made of steel now. What I do is heat them up in the coal fire until the shaft is glowing yellow and then use the hydraulic press, then I check it in the lathe with centers only and use a dial gauge. It is a time consuming job.

  • @scottfirman
    @scottfirman 6 років тому

    The way those cranks are made, you are risking alot doing that. The metal is powdered and put in a mold, then heated till it melts. It is not turned from a sold chunk of metal like they used to. On the older ones, yes you can get away with it. That crank was really bent. If you cracked it and didt know it, that crank will explode. Selling it is a really bad idea. Yes, the seal will leak even if you try really hard to make it right.

    The main hazard I see here is the force you are applying is being carried into the motor casing and you run the risk of damaging the case and/or the bearings. if you could put a block of wood between the engine and the applied blow with that block bearing against the ground, you would take out the applied load and transmit it to the ground. That may require dismounting the engine from the deck.
