Thanks for the video. Have 65 inch TCL with bad back light. This video helped me fix my tv. The only advice I would give would be, wear gloves when handling the inner screen. I left a small hand print on mine that sometimes shows up on the screen when it plays. Also the job took me roughly 5 hours or so. Advice make sure you have plenty time to work on it. I repaired mine for the first time today and it took roughly and hour and 20 minutes!! it wasn't bad I just had to make sure I had all the parts. DEFINITELY thanks to this video and one other disassembly video!!
I rolled the dice and bought the backlights to attempt this repair myself. Probably one of the easiest tvs to work on. And I still messed it up. All user error. This is much harder than it looks. Salute to anyone who can do this. I feel bad for wasting time and money just to fail miserably like I did. I had such high hopes in my situation. I was focused and took my time. But in the end I was stuck with an even more broken tv, time and money I will never get back. And no tv at all to watch. My soul hurts. Considering how much the tv cost brand new. Why they make you go through the front of the tv to get to the back lights when the lights are in the back. They should be replaceable just like batteries. But manufactures only care about money and not about their products making it to the landfill. It's going to be tough without a tv for a year 😞

And on my screen, after I put the backlight on, I now see scratches behind the screen. Is it easy to scratch it? I put the screen on cardboard, could the cardboard leave scratches on it? Or just someone who has already repaired it before didn't watch your video)
So the shock is if you bridge your finger between the capacitor electrodes on the back of the power supply. The capacitors don't store enough energy to be harmful. Just going to wake you up in the morning. I always grab the board from the edges. Yes the screen is made of a very soft plastic and anything rough will scratch it. Stay tuned because if got and updated video coming with a better angle of the part removal.
With the set unplugged, short out the legs of the large electrolytic caps to release the charge. Be prepared for a spark with a loud snap, like a bug zapper. I think laying the screen on a clean blanket might help keep it from getting scratched. Just be careful to remove any lint before reassembly.
I have a 65 TCL 5/1/2018 date mfg I think ! my outside frame is all one piece ....When I tried to separate the glass screen I accidentally cracked the bottom R corner and the top L corner , Was I supposed to separate the glass or just lift it out in one section ? I think if I'm careful it will be okay ! my new lights came in metal frames ! This is a very good a nicely done video ..... thank you !
Sure would be nice if the manufacturers had designed the frame such that the majority of the sheet metal back was removable, so we could replace the LEDs from the rear. It'll never happen though I'm sure. I have a TCL 65S517 from April 2019. No backlight. I bought an LCD tester and found that each of the 4 (vertical) strips measure exactly the same. Also when lit individually using the tester, I don't see any dim or dark spots. It flickers a couple times when powering on after a reset. I suspect the PSU is going into safety mode, but perhaps due to a faulty component on the PSU, since the strips all measure exactly the same and appear to have all LEDs lit. Ordered a new PSU but have to wait since it's on back order. Oh, there's also no voltage output to the LED connector when the LEDs are disconnected. I had read that if the LEDs are bad, disconnecting them completely from the PSU should allow the PSU to not enter safety mode and cut voltage. Not sure if that's true for all brands and models though.
A new psu should solve your problem. The control IC on most TCL psu's have load sense so it will test fire and if it sees no load it will shutdown during startup.
Make sure the flat cable from the main board to the t-conn board, the LVDS cable, is properly connected. Also check the cables from the t-conn to the panel.

@@shellzpretty we charge a flat $200 plus parts for a backlight repair if it's dropped off at the shop.
How do you remove the ribbons without damaging the clips?
If you're talking about the t-conn to buffer cables. The black strip on the connector is the cable lock. Lift up on the cable side of the latch and it will release the cable.
How to the Samson 65 inch E year backlight repair video. Got to time stamp 13:00 and you'll have a good guys of me disconnecting this same type of ribbon cable.
@@qcsbuilds5708 .. Ok got it thanks.
Was the whole strip bad or just a few lights? My TV has a slightly darker patch right down the center. Like the first 3 lights on each strip are out. It's not alot darker but it's noticable. Do you think my strips are vertical? It's a TCL Roku 55inch
I'd just pull the screen off. Those bugs are so small they could have easily gotten in side the panel.
@@qcsbuilds5708 I checked it didn't see any at all on the inside so I edited my whole post after that. I just thought there was because I saw them on the outside.
@@wlicksilly oh...some of the TCL sets do have vertical strips

where to buy a new diffuser and filters for a hisense 65 tv?
You don't you buy a new TV
What ever you do don’t remove bottom frame only and forget to unscrew the side panels. It will result in a destroyed screen upon flipping.
Facts. Done learned that lesson before with free visio bad backlights. Almost...almost had it. He wven mention it on visio is bad with that
When replacing the backlights one of the ribbons on the buffer board came off, is there a way to reattach this?
No...it's a factory only available adhesive

@@karivanwitzenberg9782 no. Unfortunately they're part of the glass panel assembly
Hey, i was opening my tv and broke the "buffer board cable". Is this fixable? Replaceable? What is its purpose? If you could please answer this please 🙏. Would save me from the nightmare of having to look it up online.
Sorry but no

Is the whole tv junk now?
@@7vir6803 yes...sorry my man
@@7vir6803 no it takes a special adhesive to reattach the buffer cables.
It's very poor of manufactured to design a product knowing that lights may need to be replaced after long working hours But yet they still put it in the most critical area that needed to remove the most vulnerable part just to replace the lights this is a setup of bad design.
I bought my TCL is 2 yes. 9 mo's. ago. it blacked out two days ago. Glad I saw this video. I will fix it, but I was thinking about buying a smaller unit for my bedroom. It will be a Samsung!!
If the room does not have much light the best way to go is a high end projector.
it's probably cheaper to just buy a TV then buy tools and lights tv is like $250 now.
For anything smaller than a 50", yes.
It's not but TV so cheap now that the difference ain't much... maybe like 100$ for parts on few tools... and like 220$ ish on sale for a cheapo TCL....
However if you are gonna throw anyways and like to tinker and learn how stuff works it could be worth it..

Where can I get the LED strips?
I recommend Shopjimmy.com
@@qcsbuilds5708 Thank You. I'll give them a shout. One thing , no back light, always the strips? I can hold a light to the screen and see faint images of what is suppose to be on.
It can also be the power supply. The backlights run off the power supply.
@@qcsbuilds5708 If I could take just a couple more minutes of your time I would really appreciate it. Let me tell you what I know. I plug it in and the white light in the bottom center comes on for a sec or two, then starts to blink, after a few more seconds Roku TV will flash on the screen for a split second (it appears to be normal brightness) then the screen goes dark. If the room is dark I can take a light and at a angle shine it on the screen and I can see everything that is suppose to be there. I understand that the power supply puts out different voltages to different circuits, can you tell me the best way to check (and the proper) voltages on the boards? I would truly appreciate any help you might be able to give me. Thank You.
Best thing to do would be to get a backlight tester and check the backlight. Typically on a TCL if you have backlight for just a short time during startup it's a backlight issue. Usually on the power supply the backlight section works or it doesn't.
I see too many videos on fixing the TCL; I wonder why anyone would buy a TCL TV.
Price
@@qcsbuilds5708 Hmmm, pay for a TCL, it breaks then buy a Samsung. Could have just paid a little more for a better TV. My 65" TCL just went dark.

@@qcsbuilds5708 Thanks for the reply. Do you know off-hand if there is a "Most Reliable" model of Samsung flat-screen TVs?
@@richardflaherty2373 not really. Samsung doesn't have a lot of first year failures. Most of what I work on is extended warranty units. I see them all at some point. Whelp. I was doing good until I went to pick up the screen to put it back on and the screen started to crack.. Guess I'm buying a new TV. These TVs are POS's.. Lasted me only 3 years.. That's probably what the manufacturers want. Just so that you have to buy a new TV every year..
I don't know about that, but sounds like your suction cups weren't quite centered.
@@qcsbuilds5708 I didn't have any suction cups, I just set it on the floor. Cracked when I tried to pick it up. Didn't think that thing was THAT fragile.. Lesson learned I guess.
@@rattmausch ouch. The TCL at times has a small strip of assembly adhesive in the top center of the panel that holds the glass in place during assembly.
Here's the link for the glass removal chapter. I give a detailed break down of how to remove the glass from the adhesive.

I have 65 TCL. Just Sunday the picture slowly faded out but sound is still working. The screen is not black it’s more blue-ish. I noticed some videos you could see the background with a flashlight, I can’t see anything at all, still have volume. Could that be a LED issue or do I need to look further.
That sounds like classic a backlight with no video issue. That is usually a t-conn board failure
Thanks for this video sir. I'm wondering if I also have a backlight problem. My TCL 65s513 didn't have any power, no center bottom LED light at all. I replaced the powerboard from another used tv and it powered on. BUT then the image was faint, I had to use a flashlight to see images. THere's still sound though. Is there a chance the mainboard is the culprit? The LED inverter? The actual LED strips? Or could it be the powerboard, even though there's power. I'd like to avoid replacing the LED strips as it looks very involved.. Thanks!
Buy a backlight tester and check them. Easier and cheaper than backlights
@@qcsbuilds5708 Thanks for responding. if i get a tester, will I need to strip the back cover to test each strip like what you did? Or putting the probes into the connectors can tell me if the backlights are bad??
@@superduperboyx you can test it from the power supply harness.
hello! what if my tv got hit and the screen is cracked causing it to have blobs of color and veritcal lines, would it be my leds or my panel?
The panel... And you're buying a new TV.

Thank you very much for the video!! I was able to get my parents TV mostly repaired in just about 3 1/2 hours. I say mostly because as I was removing the very bottom guard it slipped, fell, and tore off two of the left side diffuser ribbons that connect to the screen. I was hoping I could just line them up, tape em down, and all be well but alas after putting it all back together 90% of the left side of the screen is black. It was worth a shot though and this video was an IMMENSE help!
Wish I saw this video before buying my tcl 65” that is already down with this issue in less than 2 years.
This a great job, thx

an the suction cups
Thanks for the video. I have a TCL TV that has had half of the screen go dim. Would this possibly help that problem? Also, it is a 43" model. Does that make any difference (outside of size concerns) in terms of repair process? Thanks again!
It's basically the same process. Also yes that's likely a bad led strip or a bad wire.

Great video. I have a rebranded TLC tv for the Australian market, (Ffalcon) which has the same backlight issue after only three years of use. The internals look exactly the same. Is there a reason to remove all the boards to repair the backlights ? I'm 1/4 way through taking it apart to find the backlight part number. It's just to keep from damaging the boards.

How much do the led strips cost?
Depends on the TV. Anywhere from $50-120.
