    Most commercial aircraft send out ADS-B messages with the plane's location, velocity, altitude, and call sign. Using a Raspberry Pi and a DVB-T USB dongle you can receive these messages and track flights in your area. You can also upload this data to services like Flightradar24, which helps make real-time flight data available to millions of aviation enthusiasts, and also gets you a free Flightradar24 Business Plan subscription (a USD 499.99/year value).

    In the video Gary shows a screen where he can see the aircraft that he is actually tracking live. How do you do that?

    Would an UDOO RYZEN Bolt V1000 Maker SBC work for this as well provided you can get the x86 version of the software.

    If I am not mistaken, AIS for tracking ships works nearly the same. This can also be done with this setup I guess.

      That is a good question. So far ***every*** ADS-B demonstrations I have seen on YT, websites, and in real life (MakerFaire) have all used an internet connection. Which then I ask why set up with a dongle and antenna when you already have internet access anyway?

    I've had three systems running for years now. I feed to Flightaware as well as Flightradar24 as well as my own local system running Planeplotter (which used to feed to both Flightaware and Flightradar). Unfortunately Flightaware have ceased receiving data from Planeplotter. I'm a ham operator so have quite a few antenna's on my roof.

      @@GaryExplains Ok great ! can you use a pc instead of a pi ? and thanks Gary for getting back to me and thanks for your hard work on these videos .

  • @RossPotts
    @RossPotts 4 роки тому +2

    Nice! We recently had an exchange over your Arduino v pi video from yesterday.
    @4:18, you had a picture of pi and equipment on this vid. Is that an accurate representation of an antenna that works, or do I usually need a bigger one/outside location (for optimal use)? I will be researching my SDR card on the site mentioned to even see if it’s compatible.

    • @GaryExplains
      @GaryExplains  4 роки тому +3

      That is the antenna that comes with the DVB dongle and it works fine. My antenna is inside and gets the range I say in the video. Outside would be better and obviously you can invest in a bigger antenna for more reach.

    • @RossPotts

      Gary Explains cool. Thanks! Unfortunately, my hauppauge dongle apparently classically doesn’t work according to their forums. Not a big price though for a dedicated stick. Thanks again!

    Do you must do it on a raspberry pi can't it be done on a zero? Thanks for the video

    • @GaryExplains
      @GaryExplains  4 роки тому +6

      A Zero is a Raspberry Pi, so yes it works on a Zero, but you need a Zero W and configure Wi-Fi or a USB-Ethernet adapter,

    I have one question. What if I want to use the flight tracker just to track one specific flight from take-off to landing with all the performance, like take-off time, leveling off, speed, time, landing time, and having take-off and landing reported to a computer like a msg or an email, I mean something similar?
