  • The Raspberry Pi 4 is very versatile. Among is many talents is the ability to forward network traffic from one network interface to another. In this video I will show you how to create a router between two wired Ethernet networks and how to make a Wi-Fi router.

    How hard would it be to add Wire Guard VPN to a remote Pi that would connect to the UniFi UDM-Pro with a VPN VLAN (Subnet 70)? This way everything that connects to the Pi would be directed to my home network (for local access) and its Internet connection for security reasons. I believe that I can figure out how to use 2 5GHz USB WiFi modems, one as an AP and one to connect to the Public IP for Internet service. The Pi's Ethernet port would also have access to my home network via Wire Guard This is my next project.

    I'd be interested about the performance of the RPi as a router - like ping times or download / upload rates of things connected via the RPi. I'm using my linux PC as a router in much the same way as you're using the RPi there except with more ethernet ports added via PCIe - it's basically my own personal router plugged into my landlord's router. I should maybe see if my RPi can give me a lower energy option to keep my WiFi on when I don't need to use my PC. I'd be concerned that the RPi would be slower but if it's not a lot slower I could maybe have always on WiFi without burning too much energy. Thanks for the idea.
    On another point, I don't see that routine and roulette say anything about how to pronounce router. Think of the pronunciation of the 'ough' in tough, though, through and thorough. English pronunciation simply isn't consistent even within one style of English (like British English or American English). I know that you didn't claim that anybody was right or wrong in their pronunciation of router, but maybe you could have stopped after acknowledging the difference and saying that you prefer to use the British style. There wasn't a need to try to justify it. It's comes across as making an attempt to persuade (aka an argument). I speak British English btw, so I say this despite naturally preferring your choice of pronunciation.

    • @lahmyaj
      @lahmyaj 2 роки тому

      Lol I say it the American way and I’m Australian (which traditionally follows British English but the American cultural influence is so much stronger nowadays here I reckon).
      It’s also one of those words though that tend to follow industry-language as opposed to cultural language. A lot of our networking education is US company Cisco-made too.

    A strange thing; I was messing around with an old netbook (on which I'm running Debian, sans GUI, naturally) and I managed to get it to share its internet with my Windows laptop with relative ease. Afaik, you only need one physical port. In the late 90ies, I had a modem and a network-card in the main PC, and used it as Router. A switch was connected to the NC and the modem on the COM-Port.
    For routing, (Route66 is pronounced like root, isn't it?), I connected the eth0-Port twice:
    sudo ifconfig eth0:1 192.168.2.1 up
    sudo ifconfig eth0:0 192.168.3.2 up
    This year, I will try it with the Raspi and WLAN, since my mother doesn't have Internet connection, but there is a public hotspot nearby. Maybe I can connect not only the Pi, but my Laptop, the Smartphone and the equipment of my sister to it. :)
    Well, since the hotspot only serves 2h of internet per day per User (maybe identifying by HW-addr., maybe by cookies - didn't find out by now), I will probably use an UMTS-Stick for uplink, additionally.

    So generally, how does a pi 4 router compare against a 64bit x86 router. I get that there are lots of "it depends" but I'm just looking for a general guid. I would like the low power of a pi, but my 64bit x86 quad core is quite low in latency and fairly high throughput.

    I actually like this pronunciation. Whenever I explain what a "router" does I tell people it should be called a "route her " that is if you want to think of a packet as a "her". His pronunciation pretty much says what it does.

    In English we have both pronunciations of Router. The one that "Gary Explains" sounds like Rooter and is used to Route (Root) network traffic and then there''s Router that is pronounced just like they do in the States but it takes a quarter inch bit and is used for shaping wood!

    You are correct about how we say “routine” and such, but router is based on the word “route”.
    Here in America, most people I talk to say “raut”, not “root”. This is why we say “rauter”.
    I know there are idiots out there who will make fun of you for saying things differently, but that doesn’t mean you have to stoop to their level and make assumptions

    • @GaryExplains
      @GaryExplains  4 роки тому

      I didn't make any assumptions. I know fully well that American's pronounce router that way because it is from the verb "to route" and that is how they pronounce "to route". In fact multiple times I have replied to people here who have said that Americans get to name a router as "a router" because they invented it, to which my reply is that they didn't invent the verb "to route".

    Why would you make another network for your gaming anyway? What's the _benefit_ of doing that? Are there any downsides? I'm not interested in a _how to_ unless it makes stuff _better._ So how is this making home gaming better? I can see how this _might_ be better for LAN gaming, but by the looks of things I'm not convinced that this is better for online gaming due to the extra step needed.

    • @GaryExplains

    You make an interesting point about the pronunciation of Router. However in the context of IT security saying Router the way the British say it, really makes it difficult for people to tell the difference between a router and a rooter, which would be something that roots a device. Just saying, the American English pronunciation may have certain pragmatic motivations you may not have considered. Consider the way that the following sentences sound in British and American English:
    You need to be root if you want to change the routes. What routes are open to the root account on the router?

    • @GaryExplains
      @GaryExplains  4 роки тому

      That is all very interesting and might even be a valid argument if American English has no homophones, but it does: It would be a great feat if I could alter the altar with my feet.

    Why cant i ignore the whole eth1 interface on the whole. I wanted it to get a dynamic IP from ISP and be an AP to transmit them via WIFI. Just like a normal router does.. I'm not going to connect any device via ethernet interface. Any solutions will be helpful

  • @chrisjreed88
    @chrisjreed88 4 роки тому

    Probably would have been worth mentioning that you would have to add a static route on the internet router to point back to the raspberry pi's eth0 interface for the extra networks, otherwise the internet will not work on those networks as the internet router would not know how to get back to the 192.168.7.x network in your example.
    Even after that it may not work at all as a lot of home routers will not NAT an ip address that is not on its local subnet, so you would have to perform NAT on the raspberry pi aswell

    • @GaryExplains
      @GaryExplains  4 роки тому +1

      I am not sure about that. It worked for me. I think the "sudo iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE" handles all the necessary network address translation.

    • @chrisjreed88
      @chrisjreed88 4 роки тому

      It seems like it is doing NAT then as it is in the command, this would also negate the need for a static route on the internet router 👍
