- Time to make a delicious liqueur from immature black walnuts. It is called nocino! I need to start it now so it can be ready for Christmas.
**Remember that with wild edibles to be 100% sure of what you foraged before you eat it. When in doubt, throw it out**

I’m originally from Stockton, Missouri, USA. This town has less than 3,000 people living there. The town festival is called the Black Walnut Festival & is celebrated he 1st weekend in September (when the nuts are ready for harvesting). The festival begins Thursday afternoon & ends Sunday afternoon. There are booths for local clubs & vendors, contests, & even a carnival. Saturday they have a parade. There is a competition at all the local rural schools to determine the Black Walnut Festival Queen for the year. The reason for this celebration? The town’s only factory is Hammons Nuts…they are a black walnut processor. As kids, we could earn money for bringing in gunney sacks full of black walnuts. There were different prices depending on whether you had removed the outer casing or if you had not. The easiest way to remove the outer casing was stepping on them. The tobacco colored “juice” would ruin your shoes, so we always used old shoes. If you look at the back of the package of black walnuts in the store, many times you would see they were processed at Hammons in Stockton, Missouri. I’m not sure about packages in Ontario. It would be interesting to know if they were! ☺️
Are black walnuts poisonous? It says that black thing is poisonous.
@@nebojsa1976 no they are not poisonous, but they DO have a distinctive flavor! I love black walnut ice cream! ☺️
@@renanims6630 Yeah, I don't know, when you cut it, it turns black in like 20 seconds. That's massive oxidation right there. When you eat apple, you eat it in 2 minutes, but if you leave it outside, it will turn dark (not like black walnut of course), and you probably will not eat it. Well, with black walnuts, it turns black in like 20 seconds. That can't be good. I tried it already, it is not some special juice, like iodine, no, it is oxidized thing. Whatever is oxidized, can't be good for us. Juglone is poisonous, and I think that's what it is (that black thing).
@@nebojsa1976 the inside nut does not turn black when cut. Maybe you are thinking of some other nut? 🤷🏼♀️
@@renanims6630 Actually I tried it last night. Maybe 20-30% turns dark. Of course in the center it is hollow with interesting shapes. Just watched another video where guy was preparing tincture and he is explaining how that darkening or coloring juice is iodine. And I'm like, hmm, are you sure. I just proved last night that is oxidation (I rubbed some lemon juice on one piece and it didn't turn dark very fast but after maybe half an hour, but the other part turned black in seconds), but not regular oxidation like in apple, but massive oxidation, that turns it to dark in like 20 seconds. That can't be good.
If you turn the halved nuts onto the flat side, your quartering cut will be safer. Thanks for the very informative video!
It's amazing how plants can provide so many ways to enjoy them, and how creative people were in figuring it all out over the ages. Looking forward to how the taste of your nocino compares to the nuts! Black walnuts are my favorite of the wild nuts. Nothing like them.
Excellent idea. We went out into our woods and collected black walnuts & had vodka on hand already. Can't wait until Christmas to try this. We actually have cookie recipes from our great grandmother that calls for this. So again thank you!!!
I love how black walnut dye looks on fabric and wood. It really is a multiuse tree and nut. This is a great video. I never knew you could make a beverage out of them. Great job Jen! Thank you for making great content!
Looks great!
Thanks!
Black Walnut is my favorite ice cream!
Mine too!
Oh I just made my own full batch of Nocino Black Walnut Liquor 🥃 I recently discovered two black walnut trees in my own backyard. I was excited to find your video on how to make this. We will open it up come Christmas and send a nice Christmas cheer toast to you. Thank you so much for creating this video. 💕😊
Thanks Jen looks interesting and looking forward to the finished product.❤
Love it to make!!! Enjoy!
Yum Yum Hoping Your Recipe Turns Out Great. Thanks Jen ! ATB T God Bless
I love you n Gary's shows
Wow very cool! I cant wait to see the results!😁💕🐾🐾💕
It's looking good so far. It is getting darker daily. I can't wait for the next step!
I do not live in a black walnut area, but trappers that do sometimes use black walnuts to dye their traps. Boiling rusted steel, with walnuts, dyes the traps a deep black. I believe they use the hulls as their source of dye. The OCD in me loves the new shelf as opposed to the old cupboard! Thanks for the video.
I once mailed dried black walnut husks to a trapper up north. It's amazing how dark the dye is from the jugalone in the walnut husk. Yes, the new cabinet is awesome!
@@TheWildYam Given the lemon scent you describe, and the "up north" where there is no black walnut, I wonder how that worked out. Did the unfamiliar odour make shy furbearers wary?
dyed and waxed many traps
very interesting look forward to see how it turns out. take care
I might try to make some of that myself. Great video thanks for sharing! 👍
That looks tasty. I would have added the lemon, but I am sure it will be good. I have made a few liquors and always been happy with them. Great for holidays. 💞
Or orange peel too. I have a bit more, maybe I'll experiment with my next batch.
Great vid CJ, looks interesting 👍😃✌️
Looks good, may try this!
I just discovered that my "bad" tree in my backyard is a black walnut...😜😜😜 I'm happy I didn't cut it as my wife asked...
Tough to wait till xmas for the taste test .
Wow thank you for sharing! I collect black walnuts a few days ago, mid June and they are more young. Can I still make a tincture with it. Thanks.
Yes
@@GiantGrasses thank you so much for responding!!!!
You're lucky to have a nice small tree to harvest from! My neighbor's yard has a huge black walnut tree but the closest branches are 10' off the ground, I can't see how I'd get to them with anything short of a roofing ladder.
Wait until they drop to the ground
Those look like English walnuts. Black are very round like little tennis balls and are very easy (soft-hulls) to cut into.
Hi, question have you ever gotten a rash or hives because I just used gloves and realized the black walnut green hulls touch my side arm and felt itchy and had one hive bump, any recommendations or experiences or what to expect! Is it normal ? Also seen worms inside of it while there still green on some of them and is it safe ?
That's something *I* would enjoy, but unfortunately we have to be very careful with nuts in our household. My wife is extremely allergic. Almost all the other forage I bring home is OK, though! Stay well!
Very cool I’m in Virginia and may check our black walnuts to see if can do this!
I'm hoping the shells haven't hardened too much for you but you can try it out and see.
@@TheWildYam I’m going to check it out tomorrow at work where I can harvest the walnuts!
@@TheWildYam I look at the walnuts shells are forming and a bit hard, but still white so I’m assuming they are past for this year maybe next year though.
It looks great but highly allergic to walnuts. But will be waiting to see how it turns out. I use quality vodka to make elderberry tincture. I have two black walnut trees on my property and it’s sad I can’t use them. My squirrels are happy however.
Hi ..What happened about when you had that health issue way back?...I just wonder what it was?...clearly you got it sorted! Yayyy😊
Not sorted yet. Was supposed to go next week. Procedure cancelled due to a nursing shortage.
@@TheWildYam ah ok..Thanks for sharing ..you look well for what its worth..God bless 😊👍❤
Hi! I need your help. I did my black walnuts tincture about two weeks ago the same that you showed in the video. Second day I open the lid I saw vodka on the top got black, then I closed the lead and up until now I shake the jars once or twice a day, but my tinctures didn't change the color, walnuts are still green. Do you know what happened? What should I do? Thank you in advance!
Hi, this nocino recipie is meant to be left for months to darken the liquid. It will take a while.
@@TheWildYam wow thank you so much for responding!
Amen~!
Thanks!
How did this turn out for you? I’ve been filtering mine periodically for over a year now and the tannins are still way too strong for more than a sip. 😂
Turned out very well!
I dont want to be a Debbie downer but how do you get around the toxins in the skin of the walnut ?
Use gloves, or step on the skin to “shuck” them off….best done in the yard with OLD shoes, as they stain!
Just cut a black walnut tree down today for this purpose
Wear gloves, turn the flat side down the cut with a sharpened knife.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but you need at least 90 proof alcohol for this to work... sorry.
I'm making an alcoholic drink not a tincture. See part 2 and my Christmas video . It turned out well.
Use gloves, girl!
