Yes, the 250 Rebel is slow, underpowered, small. I got it because I needed a bike right away and it was available at the $ level I had.
It is absolutely the most forgiving bike on the road and is virtually kill proof.
The 300 is a definite upgrade an fuel injection and abs are nice touches.
But, if you want a combo city bike- cruiser, the 500 will keep you going without need for an upgrade for a number of Summers. For us shorties, that should be just fine.

Im a Harley guy, have been for 30 + years but you're right, they are a fine little bike. I just rode a Rebel 1100, I found it IMO to be under powered compared to a V Twin, so I'm not sure if I would like the 500. But I'm used to the torque and Hp of a big V twin, so that strictly a personal opinion. I wouldnt ever diss one or anyone riding one though, especially if they're new to the game. Hey man you're on a bike, live it up, who cares what anyone else thinks. They are stylish, sharp looking bikes. That 1100 is probably one of the most rider friendly bikes I have ever rode to be honest. I can't imagine that the 500 would be any different.

YOOO! This is an excellent one! As someone who has ridden both the V-Star 650 and the Vulcan S 650, I would love to see somebody else’s opinion on them! I love both, but for different reasons.
V-Star for the pure style and good value for that and the power it provides, beautiful classic sound from the twin pipes too.
Vulcan S for that surprising arm-pulling power even when restricted both electronically and at the throttle. Looks sexy too, if not a bit alien haha, but it is roughly $2-5k (depending on country) more expensive than a top condition pre-owned V-Star which is something to consider. Has a torque oriented + tuned Ninja 650 motor though, so you get 11k Rpm as the redline as opposed to roughly 7k on the V-Star.
Both are epic, both have two cylinders, both are technically cruisers.
I’d love a video just on these, but adding the shadow in too would be great!

260~lb Male here, 6' tall, 30" leg length (according to pants)
Rebel 300 2018 thoughts (after 6 months of riding)
Perfect IF.... if you are starting out, driving on average under 60mph (i can keep it at 75mph without wind, again I'm 260lb), want high gas milage (60+ mpg!!!), and already plan on upgrading but using it as a learner.
The rebel 300 is amazing to start with and got me to go from feeling uneasy at under 20mph, to building confidence and now riding over 60mph (when law allows) everywhere I go with it. With that said after about 3 months I did feel the need to upgrade for more power (acceleration, view 0-60 specs if clarity is needed). Also have been told by mechanics that a single cylinder is not good at long highway speeds, they are meant roughly 60 or under and around city.
I wish to add the only other gripes I have in general, for my weight(or your weight plus luggage if lighter) I have to put rear spring on max but it works fine (you may not have this problem). The 300 is buzzy, your mirrors shake badly and hard to see behind you at higher speeds because of this. The seat is a must needed upgrade if you ride for more then 30minutes at highway speeds (both 300 and 500, same seats). Starting the bike (similar to other bikes, but I was new and dumb), to start: Turn key on, lift kickstand (or vise versa), turn engine switch on, then start engine button.....I say this because there was a few times I thought I had dead battery (nonsense, lights were on, again I was new), or my new (lightly used) rebel 300 was a dud....nope, just need to learn start up, and its similar to most motorcycles. and last, it does feel a bit cramped due to being a smaller and lower bike with a standard ride style. I don't mind it at all but did notice it after a friend mentioned it.
so....do yourself a favor. if you start with a rebel and want to keep it for more then a year....GET 500, especially for highway riding!, but.... if you find a good deal on a 300 and want to learn, but know your going to upgrade( and don't plan on passing people) then a 300 is enough to start!
hope this helps, I was new rider not long ago (and still newish) and was looking for help like this, so I hope it helps someone decide!
Also don't forget there are other models and sizes out there, and just because I went this route doesn't mean its the best. Best thing to do is sit on it and give a test ride if possible.

I still think the sport bike motor in a cruiser frame idea would work really well if someone would put out one with real power numbers. Like a ninja 1000 motor in a vulcan 900 frame. Or a Yamaha mt10 in the bolt frame.

Pretty good review.. as a Texas MSF mechanic ( not an instructor) I have to say, out of all the 250/300s... its surprisingly torquey. It doesnt look like a small engined bike,. It's short, stubby, but it's still...ahem " full size" and brutish
Looking. It. Simply looks like a much larger( engined) bike. Depending on how you see things, that is a plus, or a negative. Here are a couple bonuses for it.. it's an excellent beginner bike, and an excellent MSF course bike. ( here is my take) we HAD late model ninja 250s. They NEVER got used, and my boss got tired of me working on the carbs, so we dismantled, or sold them off..why? Instructors said " great bike for entry level/experienced commuting, but not for teaching at the range". By the time, usable RPM on the ninja 250s was reached, students were way WAY past safety markers.

One thing added to the Yamaha Bolt. A pal of mine has one and we occasionally ride together (i own a Rebel 500). In terms of acceleration, the Rebel 500 outperforms the Bolt easily, because it is nearly 200 Punds lighter and it perfoms up to 8000 rpm That, plus the fact that my buddy is heavier than me, the Bolt needs to be revved up to compete against the Rebel. Like the video says, the bolt is more or less a discount sporty, so if you just really have that deep burning passion of wanting an iron 1200, then logically, the closest bike to that, would also be the best starter bike.

Jakk Hazzard they’re similarly powered, if we’re going to be honest about it. Similar top ends, similar power:weight... a lot of similiarities really. The differences I’ve seen, having rode both the 300 rebel, and owning a 750 aero, is that the rebel is much slower to pick up, despite having EFI instead of a carb. Granted, that difference very well may be that the shadow is 2.5 times the labelled engine size.
The seating is worlds different, despite both being classic “ass saddle” shapes, the shadow’s is wider and accommodates your butt more nicely due to the forward controls. The rebel is a little easier to throw around because of how thin the bike is comparatively, and the tire dimension differences. The rebel has a “reachable” top speed of roughly 130km/h, whereas the shadow can maintain that same speed for the most part. My personal best speed on the shadow was 145, so it’s a smidge faster. But that’s also not a maintainable speed.
A lot of the positioning difference is also attributable to the stock handlebars, with the shadow having the pronghorn style, allowing for less straight arms, whereas the rebel has bars that reminded me more of the peddle bikes I rode as a kid.
Overall, you likely are going to enjoy the shadow a fair bit more, or at least for a longer time than you would have on the rebel.

I'd recommend a Vulcan S over any of the bikes mentioned in this video. Yes, engine is a little bit bigger but it is absolutely manageable for a new rider.

The riding colossus you see before you right now (on the mighty Triumph Thunderbird) started out on the 125 Rebel. Or the CM125 as it was known then.

Everyone needs somewhere to start, but spending the 7000~ canadian that the 300 rebel is, isn’t particularly any great deal or even a good idea. The used 250rebel market is a thing, and 7000$ on a bike that’s sure to be dropped or low-sided is just piss poor planning. sadly, these small bikes just have a “rotating door” sales style, for people who ride one season and give right up because they want something, well. Fast.

Adam Ball The Southend Guy yeah, which makes sense. Hell, 3 months in on a 750 shadow Aero, and I was looking at what I could get that’s bigger or faster...
That being said, some people do still like small bikes, for whatever reason. My mom’s got a 1200 sportster trike, and a GROM (talk about night and day..) and she still loves to take the grom out for a tour. I feel a lot of the small bike market is geared towards those who just don’t care to ever do more than 10km/H over the limit

Maneuvering is more important than comfort for me. And.. Im a 69 years old retired commercial pilot. I handled powerful fast machines for years..
