When the Jane’s were about to sign their record contract, Perry turned around to the others and announced that either they gave him the lions share of royalties, whether he was involved in writing the songs or not, or he was leaving the band and it was over. You have to remember that he was 10 years older than the rest of the band, and his father was a hard nosed businessman. For the others, who were just nowhere kids with raging drug habits and Jane’s Addiction was their only chance of escape, they had no choice but to agree. Perry knew this. Perry was always that guy.

      Yeah, there was this mini scene of bands like Chili Peppers, Jane's, Living Colour, that combined elements of funk, rock, metal, even psychedelia, and it sort of got buried by grunge. Obviously some of the bands like RHCP continued to be successful but there weren't a lot of new bands coming along that sounded like that.

      I love listening to Living Color. They had so much to say, and managed to say it is a great and original way. I would play their music for my students during chem labs. Between them and Bob Marley we often danced through lab experiments. (I still think that taking careful measurements is more accurate (or at least more fun) when you can dance through it. And when the conservative administrators were busy elsewhere NoFX was also added to the mix.

    Ritual de lo Habitual is one of the most musically satisfying albums in the rock genre that I own. (1600+ albums) Avery is a frickin genius and if they didn't have a him as a bass player, they wouldn't have gone anywhere. Three days and Then She Did... deserves more attention than this song.

    • @TheMcSomething
      @TheMcSomething 2 роки тому

      It’s a wall to wall masterpiece. Every note from every instrument matters, but the production is so dense that each time you listen, you can hear new things. On top of that, depending on what system and/or medium you’re listening with, this can change the way you perceive the music as well. It’s almost like a new experience each time if you pay attention. I think it contains Perry’s best lyrics cumulatively and each instrument shines in every song. There’s a lot of bands from the 1986 to late 90’s era that are celebrated, but I’m not sure if any of them made an album as thoroughly impressive as Ritual. Just my opinion after listening to it for 32 years.

    As pointed out in this comments section, "Three Days" was a true masterpiece. Slow start, builds up & becomes a mammoth crescendo with Navarro's genius guitar work.
    Its almost pieces of songs, sewn together to make a medley, but with invisible stitching.
    Undoubtedly it was their Magnus Opus & truly ageless....

    Great thing about music is it can put you in a certain place at a certain time. This song (and entire album) puts me on the North Shore of Oahu, winter 1990-91. We would bump this on the cassette player in my truck to get pumped up before paddling out to surf ... and , damn, this song would be in my head all day as I would drop into some killer waves and shred ...just like this song shreds!

    • @exquisiteoath
      @exquisiteoath 6 років тому +4

      Ok, no disrespect intended at all but what exactly are you comparing it to? The best songs from 25 years ago are certainly heads and shoulders beyond most of the music being released today, but also heads and shoulders above and beyond most of the music that was released that year. This isn't a time based argument... it's just a darn good song from a darn good band. Take a serious look at any of the music that isn't top 40 right now... it won't take long before you find some wonderfully complex and interesting things.

    • @Duke_Silver
      @Duke_Silver 6 років тому +4

      I`m comparing it to the songs that on the radio right now. Fair comparison IMO since this song was also played on the radio a lot.

    • @exquisiteoath
      @exquisiteoath 6 років тому +3

      Not entirely sure it's fair... there was a lot of generic not good rock on the radio then as well. There's a certain perceptual shift that happens with time and distance. 99% of radio music has been easily forgettable ever since the beginning so, we forget it. I mean look - "I'm too sexy" by Right Said Fred is a fun song.. I remember signing along to it when I was in High School but it hasn't stood the test of time nearly as well as Been Caught Stealing and nor should it. That year there were probably a dozen great songs that are memorable and had great airplay. 25 years from now we'll probably remember a couple of gems from 2018 as well.
