Navarro would summarize the four styles the members brought to the group telling Spin us. Perry had a whole freakish look of his own, like some skinny, bugged-out goth surfer in whore makeup with flailing dreadlocks. Eric was more traditional punk rock, and Stephen had this crazy Afro hair thing. I was kind of a hippie kid, a little ’60s-influenced Deadhead gone heavy metal. But you throw us together and it was a patchwork quilt-it doesn’t look like it makes sense, but it keeps you warm.
The band for their part didn’t really have a formula to writing songs with Navarro telling billboard Eric would sometimes have a bass line, and we’d write off that. Perry would sometimes have a weird guitar part, and we’d write off that. Sometimes Perry would just have lyrics and we’d have to come up with something based on that. There were times when Stephen was setting up his drums and would be playing something and we’d go, “Wow, what is that?” And he’s like, “I don’t know,” and they’re like, “Keep playing it.” And there were times when I was tuning up and just kind of playing random chords and somebody in the room would say, “What are those chords?” And I would say, “I don’t really know,” and I’d have to spend a half an hour trying to remember what they were. That’s how we wrote songs.
Monday through Friday the band continued to rehearse at the infamous Wilton House in the garage out back. They’d share the rehearsal space with another band named Lions and Ghost Navarro would recall to Billbaord I would liken it to a miniature musical Warhol Factory kind of environment. Any time you’d walk in the front door, you had no idea who you were going to run into, who you were gonna see. There were a lot of drugs happening. There was a lot of darkness. There was a lot of laughter. I’ve spent some of my best nights in that house - and some of my worst nights in that house.
The band would gig around what Perry refers to as and i quote “the underground Los Angeles” - a mixture of of junkies, artists, bohemian types and. The later of which the band counted themselves part of as well.
Drugs aside Farrell made it his mission to change the rock landscape which he deemed boring by the time Jane’s Addiciton sprouted up telling Loudersound “Rock’n’roll had been around for thirty years,” s. “It was almost impossible to come up with a new sound, a new way. But I had to have it. We had to do it. And what happened was, I saw what I didn’t like.”
One of those early songs written by the band that would get them record label attention was an acoustic number called Jane Says, which was inspired by the same Jane who inspired the group’s name.. Eric Avery would tell Spin Sometimes we’d do acoustic jams on the porch at the Wilton House. I’ll never forget when Jane asked us if we’d play a sad song for her, and I had to shake my head and say, “Jane, we just got through playing ‘Jane Says,’ one of the saddest songs in the world.” References to drugs were littered throughout the song.
In 1985 a local record label and management company named Triple X had sprouted up and soon had Jane’s Addiction on their radars. Initially wanting to sign the group to a three record deal, Farrell was a little antsy wanting to only do a one record deal before pursuing the majors who were already courting the band Triple X would release the group’s first album a live concert at the Roxy that was self titled and featured several songs that would show up on their first studio record... The owners of the band’s indie label not having a lot of money went as far as selling their cars to finance the album which cost about 4-5 thousand dollars.. In the audience that night at the Roxy were Bob Forrest and Anthony Keidis who were stunned at what they had witnessed.
By 1986 Jane’s Addiction had gotten ex-communicated from pretty much every club in LA with their destructive and unpredictable shows, but they would form a kinship with the club Scream who didn’t care about their antics. The scene at Scream was a lot different than the clubs you’d typically associate with LA

Jane’s was my first concert. Had to make the trek from southern Idaho to Salt Lake City, and my high school basketball coach punished me for missing the one practice by not letting me start at the next game. It was still the best choice I ever made in that stage of life. The concert was beyond amazing, including being introduced to Primus for the opener, and despite the supposed “hurt I was doing to the team” with his chosen discipline I scored a season high and we won that next game. I made sure to tell the coach it was due to the abundance of inspiration I gained from my experience. He never brought it up again, and I played Jane’s Addiction in the locker room for the rest of the season.

Nice dude, you freaking RULE!! I was a basketball player too, in my blood stream but I had an experience kind of like yours. I was also the lead in many high school plays. But one day there were auditions for a play and the director had chosen me to play a certain character even before auditions. But I needed to go to a concert. So she told me, just show up, you don't even have to audition. I chose the concert and wasn't cast in the play. Rock and Roll over school, YES!!

Then my girlfriend turned me on to Jerry G. and then the band was always the dead following me. In college Jane's Addiction was one of my favorites. I now live in a town where Blind Melons front man is from and sad I never got to meet him. Jane's Addiction is great story w taking his brothers name and the way Perry got the house -Wilton and the rest is iconic history

Nah, they get their recognition.. it's just band hasn't done anything worth mentioning in decades. Been long hiatus, lineup changes, and no groundbreaking music since 90s.
I’ve listened to thousands of records in my 55 yrs. I would rank Nothings Shocking in my top 10. That particular record is a masterpiece. I never see that record or the band ranked in any of the “greatest” lists. I have to agree that they don’t get the recognition they deserve. Legendary groups are judged on what they did in their time when they were relevant, not on what they’ve done recently. They were an incredible live band and influenced a generation of people that “got it” whether they made any greatest lists or not.
They get more recognition than they probably deserve.

They were the first "alternative rock" band to really make it big and Lollapalooza was a huge game changer before Nirvana Nevermind. Later, I think they got overshadowed by Nirvana. I love Nirvana but I was a bigger Jane's fan in 1991 and 1992 when Nirvana really took off.
Janes's is timeless. I'm 50 and i was listening to them since high school. Saw them with the pumpkins in Anaheim and they were absolutely phenomenal.
Last November?? DUDE I was at that show too. Got tix for my bday. I'm a much bigger fan of SP but JA stole that show big time!
@ict113090 I'm with you on that one bud. SP was great but Jane's was fuckin phenomenal. Perry is a great showman. It's like he was the circus ring leader. The only thing that sucked was that Dave Navarro wasn't playing with them.

The Scream Club, especially the location by MacArthur Park in downtown LA, was an amazing space. The band and that club and the patrons all complimented each other well. Such fun.
When I was 18 I bought Ritual De Lo Habitual on cassette wore that sucker out! Classic album, great band definitely pioneers of alternative.👍
Greatest live band I’ve ever seen. Nothing else even comes close to hearing the first notes to “Up the Beach”.

In 1989 I first heard Ted Just Admit It, and it changed music for me forever. I started playing bass 4 years before and I had never heard anything like it. I still play, and still to this day Eric is my favorite bassist. Nothing’s Shocking and Ritual..? Try to imagine any of those songs without him driving with those amazing bass lines. All that shit was all him. Such an incredibly underrated and unappreciated musician.
Anyone remember the Deconstruction album Eric and Dave made after he left the band?
Avery was the foundation.. The riffs he brought forward laid the foundation for the rest of the group to build on.. Hence, everything post Avery never delivered in the same way.. Yes! Deconstruction, what a great album.. Never got it's due.. Still have LA Song & others in regular rotation...

I've got it. It feels more Janesy than Porno For Pyros, but I love both.
Deconstruction is an immensely beautiful record. Just as good as Jane's classics. Polar Bear is great also. I have all of those albums in my collection. I have liked basically everything any member did after Jane's up to around 2001. After that it gets mixed, some good tunes. The new Jane's song does sound nice.
"Ted, Just Admit It" was the tune of theirs that hooked me also.
Jane's is and will always be one of my most favorite bands ever.

These guys were something else. I was always inspired by Dave Navarro as a guitar player. When he went on to do his project with Eric Avery (Deconstruction) and his solo work, he was still putting out material that I enjoyed!

Excellent deep dive man. I’m even friends with the kid that ‘nobody’s leaving’ is about, and I didn’t know this much. Being 14 in 1992, no band told our story better, song for song, than Jane’s did. Thanks for this. A lot of mysteries resolved here.

Everyone loved Nirvana, but I was always a Jane’s fan. I remember watching the post-punk stuff on 120 Minutes, and then “Stop” came on. It was all over.
Jane's was a breath of fresh air compared to the shitty glam rock bands of the time. Jane's and the Pixies helped lay the groundwork for the grunge bands of the 90's.

I saw Jane’s Addiction on Lollapolooza in 1991. Saw Porno for Pyros in 1993. Both great! It was the end of Jane’s and a new beginning for Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins in Porno for Pyros!
Drugs and ego, unfortunately… remember seeing them live in San Francisco with Pixies and Primus triple band concert. Great concert! 👏

Ah you lucky mo' fo'! So jealousy, what combo! Introduced by a way older person & they blew my little mind. Their songs still move me to an altered state....1st time I saw them I was convinced I was effected by 2nd hand smoke (nerd that I was), NOPE it was the music, way better & less side effects than the actual smoke would ever be. ....I probably would've been "high" for days if I'd gone to that show! 😂

I saw Jane's earlier this year. And without a doubt they changed the way I listen to music. I'd heard them growing up quite often but It was just unreal. I was at barricade and multiple times throughout the set he smiled and sung and waved to me and my boyfriend. I had chills the whole time. There's absolutely nothing that compares to what they do even to this day.

Towards the end that was their first break up, Jane's Addiction had concerts lined up for their first tour of Australia.
The would break up before coming to Australia but told everyone to hang on to their tickets with Jane's Addiction coming to Australia maybe about 2 months later & honoured their commitment which I absolutely loved them for.
Also it made me believe that they realised they were just too good to split up, it kept me hoping, but alas...
The Melbourne concert went right off with everyone hoping this wouldn't be the last we would see of them especially as a short time later Jane's Addiction would release a compilation album of rare tracks.

I have great memories of my old friends and I listening to janes and RHCP while getting high. Back in the early 90s music was everything to me.
I read the Jane's Addiction book "Whores". One of the best band biographies I've ever read. Highly recommended.

Since the day I heard it 3 Days is one of my favorite songs ever. Lollapalooza 2 at Irvine Meadows is still the greatest concert I've ever been to. Ministry, Ice Tea, Pearl Jam and the only band I ever stopped for on a side stage ended up being Rage.
So far, this is the best most comprehensive history of the band I've seen. Thank you Rock N' Roll True Stories!!! My love for Jane's is beyond!!!

Why does no one ever mention Gift, the docudrama Perry and Casey made together? It was a dark journey into their drug addiction. I never hear anyone speak of it. I'm sure I'm not the only one that remembers it?

One of the biggest bands of my youth. Even the Red Hot Chili Peppers seemed like squares compared to Jane's Addiction.

There was a time when I was absolutely sick of them to the point of being annoyed by their music, mainly bc they were just inescapable especially in the late 90s-late aughts..

Alternative music wasn't started by Nirvana.. Jane's addiction, kings x, and faith no more all have gold records before nirvana.
There was a not too distant time when you could look tough just by carrying a book by Hesse or Hemmingway. Times have changed.
Saw them NYE 1990 in SF. Perry was so wasted he slurred through maybe 3 songs, passed out and they ended the show. We destroyed that place.
Was my 8 year old (at the tine) son's first concert. He loved it. He's now 9 and has a couple more concerts under his belt, but Jane's Addiction still put on his favorite show.

I can't say I'm really a fan, I am aware of them and their impact. But I can say that "Jane Says" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
It’s maybe their worst song and sounds nothing like almost anything else they ever wrote. In my opinion, of course. I get why people like it, though.

Stephen Perkins is my favorite drummer and the best drummer of my entire generation. ‘Ted, Just Admit It’ has the greatest drum intro ever recorded. Maybe the best intro of any instrument, period.

I almost wanted to be skeptical despite my good predictive/yet skeptical prognosis of the best predictive diagnosis of both bands. Yet that first single, "Airplane," totally worked!

OHM bridges the sonic gap between BSSM and Californication, although John Frusciante would never admit that. Because of this, OHM is one of RHCP's most important and most unique albums. Grossly underrated.

James has been my favorite since early 90s. Exciting that they’re riding with Eric, but now, Dave is going to be the missing factor. Always something.
Spring 89, roomate puts on Summertime Rolls in the morning, I hear the first few lines and it reminds me of the sesame street theme song. I get home late that same day, high, he puts on S Rolls and to this day it's my fave song of all time !

I worked at a record store in '89 when they really broke. It was CA so we didn't get any "obsenity law" infractions.

@@hadara69 in 89 and 90 I applied at just about every record store in my county. Never even got an interview. I was a dork back then in fact I still am. I remember when I realized the LA speed metal, punk, alternative underground, goth industrial scene was completely full of dorks nerds and every other kind of mutant and misfit. I guess that's why I liked Jane's A over Nirvana Jane's Addiction never had the mainstream appeal Nirvana had. The day I almost got my head removed in a slam pit by a UCSB fratboy with a green flat top, eyebrow ring, tribal tat on one arm, and his greek letters on the other is the day I realized this wasn't for me anymore.
This was really well done. I’ve been a massive fan of their music since the early 90s, but I’ve never known much about the band itself, other than the obvious drug overtones. I saw this movie called “The Gift” back in the late 90s that they did that I believe is sort of hard to come across nowadays. It was about the band and Perry Farrell losing his gf to a drug overdose and there are these great live clips of the band that are super intense…I’ve looked for it a few times and, to this day, have never been able to find it for purchase. Anyways, I believe Janes Addiction’s influence has been massively underrated over the years…I still absolutely love the intensity of that first live album!

I live in L.A. and from the first time I saw Jane's I tried to see them as often as possible. I had a feeling that one day, being able to say you'd seen them a bunch of times would be on par with saying you saw The Velvet Underground or Led Zeppelin. They were always fantastic live.

I remember seeing them at this small Greek theatre in LA called John Anson Ford. What a show! Saw them over 10 times and that was special. Loads of drugs and I was a deadhead too.

Thanks for this one! They were the greatest, I think. They came at the time when music was feeling really hollow, and plasticky. Not many bands can boast of not releasing a single shitty album in the eighties. Let alone even making a remarkable album on that decade. Nothings Shocking may actually be the one album in the 80's that really mattered.

Cool documentary. I remember everything playing Nothing Shocking at parties when it first came out. I barely remember the 2nd album. Saw them live on that tour.

I saw Jane's Addiction at the Birmingham Hummingbird in England in 1990. I was blown away. Easily my favourite band

BFF came home from college for Xmas break with a Jane’s album. I was hooked immediately. Saw them live w Rollins band in Huntington WV and again at Lollapalooza 1 at Blossom Music Center. Grandma, tell us about the 1990s!! Lol

Being a teen and seeing then in 91' for the Ritual, only first three albums were iconic, masterpieces. Porno For Pyros was okay, but that was it. Over. Even in the video from MTV when high on dope he speaks on loosing all his creativity. He saw the future and it became true. Everything after the first P4P's album wasn't worth anything and missing Eric and Dave. Fast forward to Lola (which I didn't goto) and seeing this "Just Because" video w. a silly trendy haircut, disco pants, flashing lights, shaking hips was the most grotesque thing I've ever seen. The botox, the malibu vibe, etc. This is what peretz had become. I could never understand how my favorite band back then could come to this. The way he treated the other members with that 50% b.s. because he was about 8 years or so older then them, so he was able to pull this off and lets point out he didn't write everything himself; Casey helped and was majorly influential to his writing. Perry was like a big baby that just ruined everything w. no genuine motive. As if that's all not bad enough once he got with a Lola stripper/pole dancer and left Casey. He couldn't even send her a few K during Lollapalooza. Flea was an awful fill in (even though everything from the first C/P to BSS-Magic). I recommend Classic Girl video, Then She Did- live in Milan, and can't think of any other visual stuff specifically. The whole hollywood botox thing was pretty rancid equally as bad as his "Immersive Experience" theme park in Vegas. G-d bro, settle down already.

Perry was being too humble when he said there are not a lot of bands like us...Perry, there has never been like Jane's Addiction or since then. Jane's Addiction is like Brainiac(R.I.P Timmy Taylor), as both bands are/were so unique that even the slightest imitation would seem like a cheap stale version of your sounds. You might have already seen The Gift but if you haven't you might like it.
Janes addiction was the soundtrack of my young 20's. I listened to nothing's shocking every day for probably 5 years. Thanks for the great video.

I moved to LA months after first hearing "Nothing's Shocking." Jane's Addiction was one of the first bands I saw in LA. It was a crazy time, and there was something magical in the City of Angels.
Nothing Shocking is by far their best work, their best album. I'll put it head to head with any alt or rock or rap album out there. They were just so way ahead of their time. Incredible. And that album came out way before Nevermind, Nirvana's breakthrough smash. Maybe four years before. And it was a must have album for me. Every song seems to have a different sound. Nothing Shocking is so shockingly good. Their other albums were good, but not even comparable. And Porno for Pyros, meh, of course the voice was Jane's Addiction, but the band and the sound, I wasn't really a big fan. Nothing Shocking was lightening in a bottle. Only to be overshadowed by the newer track Been Caught Stealing. Yes there were a couple good songs and they jammed in Ritual, but Nothing Shocking is front to back excellence.
