What a missed opportunity to include the posthumous "SMiLE" album which definitely belongs in the "Buried Treasure" category according to Michael Rosen. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smile_(The_Beach_Boys_album)
I didn’t think that one counted, but If I would put it in, It would be the same reaction as Smiley Smile. “Done It Again!”
Love You is actually one of their more acclaimed albums, at least among Beach Boys fans. It played a huge role in the development of new wave and synth-pop, and is lyrically one of Brian Wilson’s most personal works.
I loved the fact that Surfs Up you used the going to bed clip, its like a really good double meaning!
It would be interesting to see if you’ll do artists who have a MASSIVE catalogue: The Fall, Guided By Voices, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, etc.
This one was the biggest one I’ve done yet, I’ll certainly say that. The bigger ones may take longer for me to accomplish but I can get them eventually.
i vote for the johnny cash idea
Do Bull of Heaven
With someone people actually know. Who is this idiot?
Pet Sounds is great, but I'll always consider Sunflower, Surf's Up, and Holland to be my 3 favorties
Same. Sunflower, Surf’s Up and Holland. But other days I’m like the SMiLE Sessions…
I just can't put Surf's Up in my top 3 when there's Student Demonstration Time on it
@@HansonZhang-ri2lj one bad song does not a bad album make
2 years later, Holland isn't quite as great as I remember, and Pet Sounds is a tad better than Surf's Up, but Sunflower (and smile sessions!!) are still my favorite Beach Boys releases.
That's Why God Made Radio In A Nutshell:
(Brian walks in and looks around)
Brian- Mike, what the fuck have you done with the place!? Is that a MAGA hat pinned to the wall!?
Mike- Yeah, stuff got bad, like really bad. I'll admit, the power went to my head. Though sense your here, you want to do one last album? For old time sake.
(After the biggest sigh and silent pause in the world.)
Brian- Fine.
Mike- Cool, I'll get the rest of the guys on the phone.
Brian- Whose left?
Mike- Ouch, no need to rube it in.
Brian- Hey, don't fuck with the formula.
Mike had ironically said the same “Don’t Fuck With The Formula” lines to Brian as well before.
Pet Sounds is truly a great album. One of my favorites from the 60s and especially my favorite from the Beach Boys!
This is pretty impressive, so many albums
Billy Joel, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen deserves one of this great videos
Billy Joel one should definitely include the Atilla album
Yeah eventually they’ll get talked about
@@ElliYeetYT I WANT BILLY JOEL
Everyone besides Dylan
Beach Boys Today! to Surf's Up is one of the best album runs of all time. I like the surf albums, and even some of the post-Surf's Up stuff too (mostly Holland and That's Why God Made The Radio), but the Beach Boys were a creative mastermind from 1965 to 1971.
That's Why God Made The Radio is amazing. Features all the surviving members (including David Marks!), combines their old surf/cars lyrics with the mellow sound of Sunflower, and produced by none other than Brian Wilson himself.
I'm so glad they made that album, otherwise Summer In Paradise would've been their last album of original songs... yechhhh
The worst part of Summer In Paradise is the remake of “Forever”, one of Dennis Wilson’s songs that he wrote and sang on Sunflower. The original song is very quiet and lowkey, and even though the lyrics aren’t necessarily mind-blowing, Dennis has this heartbreaking sincerity in his voice that drives the song’s message.
On Summer In Paradise (nearly 10 years after Dennis died), Mike Love decided to re-record the song as a Bryan Adams-esque bloated piece of adult contemporary garbage, with John Stamos (the actor) doing the lead vocal. I know Mike never liked any of the Wilson brothers, but what he did to “Forever” is beyond disrespectful.
Oh man that final track certainly gave the album its deserved 1/10 rating easily. It would have already been bad enough with the other songs on the album but nope John Stamos and Mike Love went: “Hold My Beer.”
@@ElliYeetYT according to Todd In The Shadows, the "Forever" remake "sounds like trash in a completely different way than the rest of the album sounds like trash."
Hah I knew that clip was coming for Holland 😆 btw The Byrds albums would be a good one to do somewhere down the line
I get it if Love You was new to you, but if you love Brian's songwriting, I'd say give it a few more chances. Start with side-B, then ease into the more off-putting tracks from there. It's at LEAST a healthy 7/10.
mgmt albums next?¡ maybe?¿
If only the MIU album was shelved like Adult/Child…that would be great. I can understand Brian’s struggles with mental health among other problems but man it’s a painful listen lyrically
Other than that, great video and I especially enjoyed the commentary on Kokomo as I too have hated that song with a burning passion.
Lol, I was going to request this band on your Genesis one. Another great video 👍
Any chance of Def Leppard, Motley Crue or any hair metal in the future?
Mötley Crüe I can certainly do in future. I am waiting for Def Leppard To release their new album this year.
I know everyone has an opinion of when the Beach Boys went downhill, but for me, it began with Still Cruisin', which I thought was only decent with some bleh songs. Then came Summer in Paradise, which is both insufferable and boring, but at least had two cover songs I actually liked (Remember Walking in the Sand and Under the Boardwalk). But for me, the worst Beach Boys album is Stars and Stripes Vol. 1, it's just a greatest hits compilation recorded by country artists and little to no changes that make it stand out at all.
Other than that, I think the Beach Boys discography is fun!
2:52 thank god I’m not alone on this, Kokomo is legitimately one of my least favorite songs ever, it is so god awful.
More villains than heroes I guess
Yeah, in terms of their whole discography, The Beach Boys really do suffer in consistency especially in the 80’s and 90’s, but I have to say that The 60’s-Early 70’s and That’s Why God Made The Radio still hold up so bloody well.
Truly amazing.
2:07 NOOOOOOOOOOOO BREATHING!
2:49 OH NO! THIS IS HORRIBLE!
LOL!
Anyways, I've enjoy some of the Beach Boys albums from "Surfin' Safari" to "Wild Honey", but I didn't continue on with the rest of the band's discography, except for "Keepin' the Summer Alive" which IMO is a "bit rich but okay" album with two "snails".
There are some songs from their "not-so-good" albums I happen to like: "Rock & Roll Music", "Come Go With Me", "California Dreamin", ......and yes "Kokomo".
I'd say go up to 'Holland' (maybe leaving out Carl and The Passions) and depending on your tastes also get 'Love You'
The sad thing for me is that Kokomo is one of the better songs on that Still Cruisin album, but it really is not something I like coming back to at all.
The Summer In Paradise album is still worse by a long shot however, at least I can get why Kokomo does have some love.
@@ElliYeetYT I completely understand your opinion
UPDATE: I recently listened to “Friends”, “20/20”, “Sunflower”, “Surf’s Up”, and “Holland” and thought those albums were decent listens as well.
Not featuring Oh Lord on Keeping the Summer Alive or BB is a crime.
Bro, I haven't completed Love You yet, but I feel like it was... kinda interesting? Very unusual production for a Beach Boys album, raw punky synths? I felt like you did it too bad.
Also, yeah, Kokomo is not perfect, but... idk, before I listened to it for the first time I had bad expections and I guess walking around an evening city in autumn makes wonders, because it really fit the mood and was pretty awesome. Music fans are too harsh on the song.
It’s one of the better ones of the rough period. Even if it’s EH, it’s still much better than the stuff that’s afterwards (Except That’s Why God Made The Radio which beats it easily.).
@@ElliYeetYT Huh. Guess I'll have to check out more Beach Boys, as the only ones I have fully heard so far are Friends and Pet Sounds with some SMiLE sessions material.
Love You is a great Album.
@@acat1473 in terms of the smile session material, cut to the chase and look at Brain Wilson's solo re-release of SMiLE he did in 2004 with Van Dyke Parks - it's great, could use more bass mixed in imo but hey that's what eq is for
@@exigency2231 Yeah, know about that one's existence.. But I feel like I should grasp the might of the original sessions first before the fully realised concept

Man, the Christmas album is way better than it should be.
@@Beefy-Cheese I agree since I heard a good portion of the songs from there, whatever songs I haven't heard from there I will check out November or December.
@@Beefy-Cheese I agree, after listening to it, I decided "Why not give it a 10?"
@@ceilingfansclocksminecraft1226 Have you listened to "adult/child'' yet? I don't see it on there.
@@Beefy-Cheese Not sure, I didn’t know that was a Beach Boys album.
Accurate depictions of 70s output.
Tbh their only bad albums are Surfin Safari, Little Deuce Coupe, Beach Boys party, MIU album, Keeping The Summer Alive, Beach Boys 85, Still Cruisin', Summer In Paradise, and the absolute worst thing in existence Stars & Stripes Vol I
Surfin Safari, Little Deuce, Party, and MIU all have some gems but I’d agree there not great albums as a whole. LA verges on that list with the giant zit that is Here Comes The Night (Disco).
Yeah Summer In Paradise is as awful as you’ve heard it is. Easily one of the worst albums of the 90’s. Would really not recommend scarring yourself with it. It’s “Beach Boys Butt-Rock.”
Ehh it's not *that* bad, couple tracks I genuinely like. I'd say it would be perfectly fine if you didn't know who the beach boys were and what they were capable of beforehand.
"Summer of Love" is kinda a guilty pleasure
@@naza_335 Exactly
aw, you beat me to this!
Oh sorry bout that. Aw well. Feel free to do one on another band you enjoy. 🙂
@@ElliYeetYT all good. love this video
I love it
I’d love to see Billy Joel or Frank Sinatra one day
Billy Joel is definitely one I have on the agenda.
They were good through miu
Totally fine if you think that. I mean, MIU is still much better than Summer In Paradise and Still Cruisin.
OH
I can’t stand the Carl and the Passions, 15 Big Ones, and Love You slander in this one D:
Can you do King Gizzard perhaps?
Already up on UA-cam!
ua-cam.com/video/nh9PvczHeUM/v-deo.html
How about one for Primus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Sabbath or ZZ Top?
Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Black Sabbath ones are already on UA-cam. The others I can do.
@@ElliYeetYT I didn’t know, I just started watching your stuff recently so I was unaware if you did them or not. This was still a cool video though, just goes to show how long a career these guys had but Dennis and Carl really should’ve gone out on better albums
Edgar Winter albums could be interesting
Bro, could you please make one with Swans?
Swans I will do eventually.
@@ElliYeetYT Damn. would be interesting to see how you rate Public Castration and The Burning World)
What albums do you recommend listening to, besides the obvious pet sounds
Brian Wilson himself recommends starting with Pet Sounds and Love You and most of their late 60s to early 70s stuff is worth checking out like Surf's Up
I’d recommend the last album, and most of the period between the first album and 15 big ones.
first album to like fifteen big ones, ALSO LISTEN TO SMiLE, which was a canned album, developed a whole mythos around it, got finished in 2003 i think? there's two like in depth in depth wikipedia pages to read if you're interested. there's two versions - Brian wilson released a version in 2003, and in 2011 they reconstructed it with the original recordings from the 60s modelled off of Brian Wilson Presents Smile, the 2003 version. there's an hour and fourty documentary on SMILE on youtube, worth a watch
@@exigency2231 yeah they released some of the tracks as filler over the years before Brian re-recorded it and released it as a solo album in 2004 and the original session recordings were released in a box set in 2011
Seems like you actually listen to ideas from the comments.
Yeah Most of the Michael Rosen memes that I have done were requests from the comments. 🙂
Could I get a Stevie Wonder album vid?
Stevie Wonder is a good idea. Will consider it as a future one.
Huh?
All Beach Boys / Brian Wilson fans .... every tuesday night at 8pm Beach Boys Talk with some excellent guest, please tune in.
Seen them many times Bruce johnston is my uncle and I'm friends with everyone in the band especially mike
