I am almost 60 and have loved the Beach Boys since I was 16. Dennis was my favorite and his music was so underrated. I wonder what would have become of him if he was still with us today. I believe that he would have been even bigger. I could see him writing for other artists as well. RIP Dennis.
His songwriting contributions on the Beach Boys albums and singles B sides are extraordinary.

Rare stuff indeed. Dennis comes off as such a likable, really engaging guy. He's actually having a thoughtful conversation with the guy, asking him questions too, you just don't ever see this with people who have lived through the biggest kind of fame for years and years. They're usually pretty jaded, understandably. Dennis was a cool dude, Californian through-and-through, a genuine wasted beach bum. He also had the Wilson genius gene for sure.
Most people who knew him say he was a very sweet, charismatic, and friendly guy most of the time, but he had a hair-trigger temper and he would not hesitate to get violent if you pissed him off.

After Brian, I don't think it would be unreasonable to suggest Dennis was the most talented member - not drummer - but all-round artist with a passion for creating music.

All 3 of the Wilson brothers were class acts. Pretty cool considering how Murray acted.
Dennis Wilson was very Underrated after listening to his solo album Pacific Ocean blue, Dennis Wilson should have been an icon, maybe someone like Jim morrision of the Doors.

Such an amazing guy. I wish he had left the Beach Boys by this point. He could have achieved so much. He sounded so enthusiastic for the future of touring and Mike and Al put a stop to it. He was my favourite out of the Beach Boys and after Brian, he was the most talented. His songs were fantastic. I’m just glad they’re opening up the archives and we’re getting to hear more
I get that M.L would turn the screws, but didn't know Al had. Where did you learn this information ?
@@sonjiapbooth it’s in a lot of the history about the band. Mike and Al did everything they could to take charge and turn out the Wilson’s from having the upper hand. While Al has gone back to being a big supporter of Brian’s, he was on Mike’s side in the late seventies, early eighties
@@sonjiapbooth Al's motivation was to right the ship that had become disturbingly dysfunctional at that time due to the brothers' drug and alcohol abuse and Brain's untreated (or maltreated) mental illness. While not related, Al was with the band from the beginning and it was his career, livelihood, and baby as much as it was for the others.
His own vices would’ve put a halt to it quickly. Dennis couldn’t keep himself clean. Nobody held Dennis back like Dennis. Nobody supported him like his brothers.

What a treat ! Lord, how I just adore that album ( POB ) !…I wonder if the next time that they did tour Australia was the one which David Frost managed, and in which Carl came a cropper on stage in Perth ? And Dennis ( or was it Carl ? ) got read the riot act by Mike & co. for ( allegedly ) scoring for Brian in a hotel ?…My word, what a whirlwind they lived within at that time ! Forget about ‘Hammer of the Gods’ Led Zeppelin ! They gave Keef Riff Hard a right run for his money !
When you see Dennis here, it's hard from the outside to understand how his life spiralled so out of control; dead 6 years later. I wonder had the studio he's sitting in been kept by the band and if his solo tour had gone ahead, would things have been different.
It's said that he took it hard when BS was sold and his solo efforts were not supported by band mates.For all of his alpha-male energy and cockiness, his self - esteem was probably always shaky.
He seems very lucid here. You would never know that the serious trouble is coming soon.

He was even worse in New Zealand on the same tour. There were warrants for his arrest in Christchurch for assault and battery, allegedly.

Dennis was so natural, such a shame that his life was made hell by his cousin Mike Love who hated him .
Dennis started drinking and substance abuse in 1964,abusive father,and mother who wouldn't step in,he would be charged and the boys would of been taken off them.
Dennis has done alot of interviews,always cring worthy when an Australian gets involved,same when the rollers were interviewed,why are you doing so well?so what?if people knew at the time what was really going on,manager,Arista,bell who were bought by Sony,I don't buy Sony.
I watched this to get a sense of the Beach Boy who was taken in by the Manson family. His demeanor is like the other drug addled revolutionaries of their day. He is dismissive plucking his guitar as if the discussion is beneath him. This is a posture they had to take to project that they are somehow outside the mainstream. Making random comments such as raising the Bee-gees for example. If you watch a Janis Joplin or Hendrix interview you will this this amplified. In retrospect it is a pose that is obnoxious at best and which proved to be totally without substance as you see in the unraveling of Brian Wilson, Hendrix, Joplin and even the whole movement thanks to Charles Manson.
That's a very odd read on this interview. You might be interjecting a little confirmation bias.

Nice interview. Alot of people dont know this but Dennis was picked up while hitch hiking by non other than the evil Ted Watson! That how that all started. Shame it went that way.

@@paultynan8705it's a bit of both, Dennis has been pick up by Tex, brought him at his home, and that's where Tex met Deen Moorhouse , who was the father of one of the Manson girl, and that's how Tex eventually met Manson. But weeks before Manson met Tex, he had picked up a couple of Manson,s girls, brought them to his place, left for a recording session with the band, and when he back a few hours later, his house was full of strangers, and of course, good old Charlie was one of them, and I guess the rest is history, and a sad one indeed.
Pacific Ocean Blue was a really great solo album by Dennis

Sad story indeed. I think an overwhelming factor in his long decline was the fallout of his experience with Manson & family. He carried such a monumental amount of guilt over that, even though he never was an active participant in that crap. I think it was just the burden of knowing that he unwittingly introduced Manson to Hollywood that played such a huge role in his downward spiral. Really sad stuff.

This is awesome! A rare beardless (some stubble) 1977 Dennis Wilson. I always thought it was around this time where he starts to age rapidly, but he still looks very good here. I guess by 1979/80 is when things start to go downhill fast. An immense talent who unfortunately couldn't escape the drugs and alcohol. He is still sorely missed.
Yes, I feel the same. Such a vital, interesting, and really engaged person. It's nice to see this interview with Dennis. They always seem so few, when you can find them.
And appearance-wise, he seems pretty healthy, as well. It seems like, seeing the available photos of him, there are the ones where he is young and healthy, from an earlier period with the Beach Boys, where his hair is either bleach blond or natural. Then you see the ones of him later on, where his hair is sort of straggly, and his beard is long and untrimmed. I don't particularly like looking at him in those latter-day pictures (although I know he had alcohol, and drug issues at the time, so my heart goes out to him. I should say went out to him, as I know he has passed).
But this is a nice interview with him, when he seemed alright. Appreciate the interview. I'm thinking it must have gone on longer. If more footage from it could be seen, what would be great.
He looked good until 1979. In 1980 his looks began to change. And he lost his voice sometime around 1980-1981.
@@toastertwo1602 I have never seen Dennis beardless in 1978 or 79, but in pictures he does look ragged starting in 79.
He was bearded for most of 1977 and on the POB album he looked older with the big beard. But here after the POB he still looks like the old Dennis of the 60's and early 70's.
@@westy40 I think one of the best pictures of Dennis was on the inside fold out album "Sunflower", from 1970. He looked very healthy there. Clean-shaven, hair longer than he'd had it in the '60's, but nicely styled.
Apparently there was an interval where he'd had a very full beard, when he did P.O.B., then shaved the beard sometime before this interview. He still looked good there, clean-shaven and hair attractively-styled seven years after the "Sunflower" picture shoot.
But his deterioration was obvious, from either the late '70's, or definitely 1980. He lost his original voice, due to excessive drugs and alcohol, consumption, and it became a sort of rough growl. When he sang, he began to sound like Joe Cocker. Add to that his scraggly hair and long, untrimmed beard, and the behavior he was beginning to exhibit in public, and he was a far cry from the attractive Dennis of the '60's into the '70's.
But thank you for including this interview with Dennis. It showed how he was before the fall.
He actually stopped the drugs but like his brother Brian who turned to food Dennis turned to alcohol. I mean i don't blame them with that type of so called father

In such a short interview you get a sense of what a sensitive, intelligent and kind hearted soul was Dennis Wilson. No way he’s faking that this guy was the genuine article. Underrated as a drummer too. His feel was fantastic. The Boys were always way better with him behind the kit even though they obviously hired pros when he wasn’t available
I knew a drummer who toured w/ him & he said he was full of himself but that side of him isn't on display here. The public never heard from Dennis much, just saw pics of him surfing & carrying on. This shows he was a much more serious artist, played other instruments too. And played a bigger role in the band than was believed. I remember feeling bad when I saw the LA Times headline that he had drowned.
From what I can tell (I never knew or even met Dennis on a person-to-person level, so all I have to go on is what I see, hear, and read), he was a very multifaceted and layered person. Here in this clip we see the calm, thoughtful, intelligent, and friendly side, but I’ve often heard he could also be quite volatile and had a very short fuse and hot temper. I’ve read several accounts of him being quick to throw punches when triggered.
I’m no doctor, but he seemed to exhibit all the classic signs of a bipolar condition… and that’s something I do have quite a bit of experience with. Either way, he was an interesting person who seemed to have a huge heart as well as some really nasty demons.
I met Dennis while recording an album for Capitol Records at Brother Studio, the same time he was finishing up P.O.B. He walked into the control room while I was doing a guitar overdub and wanted to meet me, saying he liked what he was hearing.. We ended up sitting in the studio at the piano while Dennis played piano and sang some songs from his album. Shortly thereafter, Dennis went over and sat down on his drum kit and we jammed as a duo for several minutes. At the end of the night, he apologized for interrupting my session - which he certainly did not have to! - and then proceeded to tear up my entire day's studio bill, about $800 worth!
I met Dennis at a Peaches Records store in Dearborn Michigan. He was there while on his tour promoting his solo album. I have the photo of me shaking hands with him. Very approachable superstar, friendly with everyone.
The one on Schaefer? And he's wearing the shirt. Down the street from my dad's bar - 'Scoreboard'.
In '76, at Mile-High Stadium in Denver, I met------albeit for maybe 3-4 minutes, Carl Wilson. I was granted backstage access, & because he was my favorite member of the group, it was a real honor to meet him. As i was there, I saw Dennis , with Karen Lamm-Wilson. My impression, standing maybe 10--12 feel away for the 20 minutes i was there, was that i was watching THE Dude of Dudes ! The easiest way to say it is, it was just not possible to take my eyes off of him. He wasn't that tall : 5'10" , but he had a truly magnetic presence I've seen only one other time in my 76 years. That, was in getting to know Marvin Gaye on the basketball court in LA, from '70 to the late summer of '73. He too, was a guy you just couldn't take your eyes off of. Both were handsome, though in differing ways, but with DW, there was just an incredible aura with him. and the only way to say it is really, he was THE Dude !! Whatever that " it " thing may be, he had it & then some, & he & everyone else, knew it. -------For whatever reasons, he never did perform as a solo artist, which is a shame. I suspect the booze & drugs played a role there, but it really is a shame. -------In '83, when I saw the group 2 times, he looked so bad------he was barely recognizable , & it just made me so sad. -------MJL, 76 y/o

The real gift of this interview, is that clearly, DW is sober, clear, & his normal, reflective, self. He's not high or under the influence of alcohol. This man had so much talent ! if only he could have overcome his inner demons. I've been lucky enough to live long enough, to come to terms with mine ; at nearly 77 y/o, I had better be reconciled to what I am, but Dennis never got there. The alcohol & cocaine had him, & he just could not shake them. Such a tragedy. ---------------MJL, 76 y/o

No clip of that song has ever surfaced, so if the good folks at Reelin' might ever see fit to post it, all us BB fans would be very grateful!! :)
I would have been cool to just hang around Dennis especially around this time he was so inspired and motivated with Pacific Ocean Blue.
Had his solo career not been swiftly taken away without a chance and brother studios never met its demise he could have created more beautiful songs and possibly could have matched Brian in time in the public view instead of just being seen as a stadium show drummer. Everything about Dennis is just tragic and none of it should have happened

Dennis was the rebellious misunderstood middle brother. I always felt that he had some amazing music ahead of him.
His voice sounds pre 1976 to me.
His speaking voice was OK until 1980-1981.

Well the full Beach Boys band toured Australia the next year in 1978. I saw them in Melbourne. Carl was a bit out of it but overall a great concert.

@@erickjason9092 all three Wilson brothers were using heavy amounts of drugs during that tour. For instance, at a show in Perth, Carl collapsed on stage while high on heroin and had to apologize on the news the day after though he blamed it on a bad mixture of Valium and Mai Tais. He can also be seen and heard in the footage from some of those shows during that tour slurring his words and generally just high and out of it. Brian and Dennis were also doing heroin and cocaine on that tour and Carl actually got punched in the face by Brian’s bodyguard, rocky pamplin, for giving Dennis $15,000 for cocaine for which he in turn did with Brian. Dennis also got in trouble for that same incident and the other Beach Boys were considering kicking him out of the band and replacing him for the rest of the tour, though they never did and Dennis didn’t even know they were thinking about it. All in all though, Carl’s behavior was the worst, since he was usually seen as the most put together Wilson brother who could keep his behavior in check. But, during that tour, his drug and alcohol use was so bad that surprisingly Dennis was the most coherent Wilson brother for many shows.

SHOCKING that he looks & sounds so good here -- and to realize he'd be dead in 6 years.
This is a really great little interview. Very intimate, and shows the best side of his personality. I’d like to preface this comment by saying that I don’t claim to be an expert or know everything there is to know about Dennis Wilson. I was still in high school when he died, and I never got to meet him. However I have been a huge fan ever since childhood, and I’ve read, heard, and seen countless interviews and firsthand accounts. From roughly 1968-forward, his story is a really sad one, interrupted by some truly inspired moments of songwriting… but ultimately it seems that the last 15 years of his life were essentially a long, slow downward spiral that ultimately resulted in a tragic, premature death.
I think the number one factor in his long decline was the emotional and spiritual fallout of his encounter and experience with the Manson family. From everything I’ve heard, he carried a colossal amount of guilt over that whole thing, even if he didn’t participate in anything more sinister than haplessly introducing Manson to the Hollywood elite. Dennis was a victim in all that, in my opinion. It haunted him and it broke him.
At any rate, like I said this is a great little glimpse at the kind of person he was, at a time when he apparently wasn’t letting his demons get the better of him. Thank you for uploading this.
I'm an oldie, but I've never seen him interviewed. Maybe it's just me, but he strikes me as intimidating, but friendly.

I do get what you mean. I’ve loved Dennis for so long, but as I’ve gotten to be older than he was when he passed, I can see how it might be intimidating to talk with him. He has a really wild presence that I don’t think you find in a lot of musicians. I can totally understand why so many were drawn to him, but others might be wary as well

@@jlee2383 Yes. He always had his head cocked to one side. He had an aura of danger mixed in with deep soulfulness. There was an intensity mixed with sensitivity. Even when he extends an arm to the interviewer, it's a total Dennis move.

He talks to his interviewer as if they were friends. He must have been an amazingly social guy. Very sensitive, comes across as genuinely interested. But also there is a great sadness in his eyes.

Actually I’m surprised Dennis Wilson lived as long as he did. His regrets about leaving Manson to take the punishment finally caught up to Dennis. Melcher was a scum bag but his regret’s finally caught up to him too as Terry died at 63. It was Dennis and Terry who sent Tarlow to represent Garretson on Saturday.
This is just like what I was hoping he’d be like, such a humble yet super talented dude, excellent songwriter, singer, drummer!

Mike Love and the management of the band didn't like the fact that Dennis had his solo deal, they ask him, or ordered him to come back to the band to record new stuff and touring.
