Battles being blinkable might make them insane. But barring that, they actually cost you a lot of tempo to get the bonus, so it's not really just all upside.
Yeah the battles with really high requirements, like 6 defense counters, I can't see being flipped. If you have an open attack for 6 damage, you're almost certainly already winning, and if you're not, the 6 chip damage will be better than the flipped card most of the time. I think the backside of the battles are mostly for commander, because I just can't see them being good enough in 20 life 1v1
@@AMageOldAsDirt Its the 4-5 counter battles that are the most unlikely to flip. In most cases, those are not valuable enough to use spells/a whole turn attacking. 6 or more counters are just one removal spell away, so if the pay off matches the number of counters its really good value.
Zurgo and Ojutai returning itself (themselves?) to hand, and having hexproof the turn they ETB, makes it kind of like Obzedat in that it is actually gives the opponent no window to use targeted removal on it/them. I think what is going on with that ability from a storytelling perspective is that it simulates the Dash ability of DTK Zurgo.
Invasion of tolvoda being blinkable means reanimating a blinky thing like flickerwisp which can flicker the battle can set off these chains in commander. You reanimate a blinky then reanimate another by blinking the battle, then another, until you get a mass blink effect like yorion or Brago to do it all over again. It’s a very cool card and I am here for ir
I think you are looking at the front of Elesh Norn wrong. To me, it looks more like a reverse Archfiend of the Dross, in that it punishes your opponent for dealing with your creatures. Specifically, in a token deck (or any go wide deck) Elesh Norn makes the opponent either pay 2 life or 1 mana for each creature they block (or each creature you block with). I expect the front side will be much more deadly than the back in decks that would want to run her, though the back is a very solid finisher.
Lol, this is thew sort of comment that reminds me that everyone thinks they know how to evaluate magic cards but the reality is most people have zero clue lol lol lol
The thing you're missing on Incubate that makes you feel like "do you really want to pay 2 mana for this" is that you don't have to transform them as a sorcery. You can use them as surprise blockers or hold up mana for removal and then sink it into incubated tokens if you don't need to remove something.
First against the odds should be liquimetal torque to make a battle an artifact, then use an artifact animation effect like Karn, the Great Creator to make the artifact battle a creature, then make the battle attack itself. Edit: This is even possible in standard with Encroaching Mycosynth and Tezzeret, Betrayer of Flesh/Majestic Metamorphosis/Unctus's Retrofitter.
I am now infinitely more hyped for this set. The contrast between All Will Be One having so many phyrexians vs this set being a love letter to the many planes and worlds that MTG represents...love it
Personally, I think the spice with Terror of Towashi is how well it interacts with Backup cards. You pay 4, get a Backup back, and boost the Terror. Bam, it’s bigger and harder to kill, PLUS you get bonus abilities that might make it a better attacker (Boon-Bringer Valkyrie, for example, making it a 5/4 flying deathtouch lifelink firststrike)
Realmbreaker, the Invasion Tree is the most Yugioh-like card I have ever seen in Magic, in terms of its presentation. Really long dramatic name, kind of hard to read art with a Cool aesthetic, and extremely long card text with abilities that use graveyards as second hands and search your library for other cards of a type that is specifically associated with Realmbreaker and unlikely to be used for anything else. @50:05 OUCH! Kamigawan Samurai barely even have a Lord (if Nagao and Takeno even count as Lords).. This just feels like a slap in the face, and adds insult to injury from Wizards.
My initial guess at the set's power level: 1. Battles will be busto broken, probably due to blink effects or generating too much value from the two sides while being hard to interact with a la Fable or Uro. 2. The flip Praetors will be OK to extremely good, depending on how hard they are to flip. They remind me of the BRO meld cards, which are still quite good but I haven't seen much of them recently because I guess they've been slightly edged out by other things. 3. Most of the legendary team-up creatures will be very meh and just for casual EDH.
I'm happy you mentioned Botanical Brawler. That's the card besides two flash cards (I have a modern flash deck that I'll add those two) and the vampire that deals with +1+1 counters and draws cards that are my favorite cards spoiled so far. I have been wanting to build a +1 +1 counters deck that wasn't hardened affinity for awhile and they finally added two strong cards that might make it good. Being able to go turn one Pelt collector or Experiment one into turn two botanical brawler make a 2/2 and a 3/3, then turn three another one drop into Huatli's raptor is going to be an absurd clock lol as that'll be a 4/4, a 3/3, a 6/6, and a 2/3 on turn three two of them having trample. Adding in duskshell crawler (give trample to all creature with 1/1 counters on them, and Kodama which does the same thing and you have a powerful deck. Also conclave mentor. I've already built it without the new cards and it hits hard and fast.
The big question is if you can "defeat" the battles with destroy effects. If so, that's a huge advantage for WBG to be able to destroy nonland permanent and avoid having to damage down the battles.
I wouldn't be surprised if Moonmist got more popular with all of these transform cards. Not too difficult to make creatures humans in addition to other types for a turn.
For the sagas, you need to bounce them to have the 1st ability. If it isn't bounced, using Moonmist for example, you will have to wait until your next 1st main phase to put a counter on it. Certainly, it may be easier, but it is still tiresome to transform it
@@Chronowizpal We're talking about sagas or blightsteels which normally take almost 8 mana to transform, instead only for 2. Take a look at Sun-Blessed Guardian who is already a Human and has a transform cost of 6, can now be flipped by T3. Very hyped for any more humans spoiled
It's looking like this set is meant to be a Legacy set. Bringing back known characters with slight twists, implementing the battles as a new mechanic, the character combo cards being meant to replace existing staple cards or upgrade existing archetypes (ex. Chrome Host Seedshark is kind of sharknado on a creature for spellslinger decks, Zurgo enables dragon tribal decks, etc.) Doing all that in one set feels like a lot, especially if you're trying to figure out a standard filled with all this nonsense. There's clearly a lot of flavor and if you're a lore fan or know your magic history I'm sure some part of this will remind you of their favorite old card or whatever, but I'm not sure how I feel about that happening in standard knowing that there's already a lot of power in ONE... and that it's being completely overshadowed by jank Toxic OTKs and instant-ult Planeswalkers. It feels like there will be some decision paralysis in Standard with so many busted cards to play and this is more of an attempt to redefine historic/legacy.
I could see Zurgo and Ojutai being an interesting EDH deck. Add in a Barrin, Tolarian Archmage to incentivize returning them to hand and some dragons with good ETB effects, like Obsidian Charmaw or Demanding Dragon.
Seer of stolen sight looks like a sleeper to me. Sac a treasure, get mana and surveil. Cast village rites, surveil then draw two. Viscera seer, surveil and scry. Nutty card
A couple of notes on Invasion of Tarkir, it's X plus 2 so every dragon only adds one damage. It also specifically mentions that X can't be zero so it will be 3 damage at minimum but restricts it to a dragon deck.
@@Chris-B-Chick3n My brain totally misinterpreted that. Usually X allowed to be zero is implied unless it's stated otherwise so my brain read the text as "can't". I suppose it's the wording of the card but I wonder why they didn't specifically say "may reveal" to give the X can be 0 option
I think the protection that Sword of Once and Futrure might make it playable. While other colors do have ways of killing whatever creature you attach it too, blue and black would have most of the better awnsers. Granted they could just target as you go to equip.
Battles are a card type that feels *inherently* powerful, like Planeswalkers. And they definitely needed their own card type to make sense, so kudos to WotC for understanding that.
I'm very excited to get Phyrexian matters stuff finally, since I'm a big tribal player overall, and it'll give the Atraxa list I've been theorizing for a little while that special something for me. Incubate actually looks pretty fun, too, and I really like the new Elesh Norn. I'm...middling on battles just because I don't like the execution flavor wise, but they're probably going to be really interesting in a mechanical sense still
I’m not sure what to think about Once and Future, because it’s ceiling is pretty high but it’s not guaranteed that you’ll have an instant or sorcery that costs 2 or less. I feel like it’ll have some value, but I personally wouldn’t rate it as high as F&I (I also value protection from red slightly higher than protection from black given that red’s boardwipes are damage-based)
For me I am just excited for the new Elspeth hoping for many of the stuff that weren't answered here in March of the Machine will be answered on "The Aftermath"
With Eleanor Norn/Argent Etchings, it loops with itself because you only need to sacrifice 3 creatures to flip Eleanor Norn and Argent Etchings produces 5. Not that its super relevant for 1v1 formats because one Telling of Argent Etchings is probably enough to win anyway, but its cool for commander.
Love Invasion of Tolvada. A third card in white that can reanimate nonland permanents for shenanigans. I've, on occasion, run various Esper/Jeskai Omniscience reanimation decks in explorer/historic for a while now, so good to have another option.
Invasion of Tolvada is going to be a house in my Nethroi ETB/Reanimator deck. It'll help me bring back the non-creature permanents I'll inevitably mill and then create Spirit tokens for Nethroi to Mutate on to in the late game.
If I ever get Transcendent Message on Arena, it will go right into my Sai Historic Brawl deck. Sweet sweet instant massive draw with convoke, yes please!
not only are battles permanents, they're also very hard for opponents to remove if their etb's are just being recurred for value, they'll need to have a way to remove a nonland permanent
Orthion is going directly into my Omnath, locus of rage commander deck, because making 5 copies of the commander at once for 30 lightning bolt triggers seems hilarious
If Norn transforms back with the third chapter, you can transform her again at the same turn if at least 3 of the 5 creatures from the initial first chapter trigger survive long enough. So, your board presence just keeps getting bigger. That's some powerful inevitability right there. Strange that there are no toxic creatures in this set (or at least none have been revealed yet), except Etali sort of.
The tax is attacking the battle instead of your opponent. Glissa will be the most bonkers with battles because you can attack your opponent and still remove counters from the battle with her ability. And Glissa is already pretty good.
this set looks rad! They even make special style of all cards the same style it was with their original block! For example, for Inga it is heavy metal style and so on. So cool!
Feels like the battles really have to be good on ETB - like I don't know how worth it the back sides are. That's all damage that you could be sending at your opponent, so it acts as a kind of extra life total for an oponent if you're intent on attacking it or using burn spells on it. That said, having the ability to bounce battles is very interesting.
You can use all 3 Norns to make just the most excruciating blink ETB tokens deck ever lol. Throw in Mondrak and Anointed Procession and Rabble Rousing and turn those tokens sideways. Put in a Maskwood Nexus to make her back half not punish you. Imagine tapping out to cast a bunch of spells and then having 10 "damned if you do block, damned if you don't block" creatures just blindsiding you
SETH you forgot to mention the ultimate jank AGAINST THE ODDS "combo" with Invasion of Tarkir. Draw a million cards, reveal a million dragons, and game over! 👹
Not sure if I missed it, but how are you supposed to cast the back side of battles. Do you pay the cost when it comes in and then again to play the back?
Worth noting though, it's reminder text does read that you "cast" it without paying the mana cost. sounds like there is the possibility to respond and counter
Elesh Norm enters the list of sideboard cards in standart that destroy green and red decks. the floor is weaker than obliterato and exemplar, but the celing is much higher.
Elesh norn looks op in a go wide deck lol. If you block a 5 power creature with 5 1/1 than it would be 10 damage/5 mana for just 5 1/1s and no damage to yourself. Damage boardwipes like burn down the house will kill you too so only destroy or exile effects work.

Love this! Finally another good Dino for my gishath deck and I really like the flip norn in my tokens deck
The new sword seems like a solid piece to consider in a reanimator deck. You can surveil things you want in the grave to reanimate them.
Love the way you say Teferi Akosa of Zhalfir :D
Seer of stolen sight looks like a sleeper to me. Sac a treasure, get mana and surveil. Cast village rites, surveil then draw two. Viscera seer, surveil and scry.
Nutty card
32:20 Zurgo and Ojutai sadly references to dragon of tarkin Zurgo bellstriker (current timeline) not the khans one
how do u play draft with sieges? just always have to sleeve everything?
They'll just use check list cards like they did with innistrad and other sets.
lets go! i was waiting for this and hear seths opinion about battles
With all the human subtypes, seeing Baral and Kari Zev being just a human feels weird lol
We deserve a human pirate wizard
Very excited for battles
The circle of loyalty “loyalty”- never change Seth!!
A couple of notes on Invasion of Tarkir, it's X plus 2 so every dragon only adds one damage. It also specifically mentions that X can't be zero so it will be 3 damage at minimum but restricts it to a dragon deck.
X can be 0 ;-) thats what it says
yes the x plus 2 thing. i wish it was x times 2 seth. and oddly enough, it says x can be zero, idk how many cards say that.
Awesome video, great job
Battles are a card type that feels *inherently* powerful, like Planeswalkers. And they definitely needed their own card type to make sense, so kudos to WotC for understanding that.
Quintorious doesn't even need you to exile something to create a token, insane value
Halo Forager does seems pretty nuts. I was expecting it to say X can't be 0, then I realised it can target any graveyard not just your own. Crazy
wow back-up is kuul! it would work well with the flip side of heliod giving spells flash!
I'm very excited to get Phyrexian matters stuff finally, since I'm a big tribal player overall, and it'll give the Atraxa list I've been theorizing for a little while that special something for me. Incubate actually looks pretty fun, too, and I really like the new Elesh Norn. I'm...middling on battles just because I don't like the execution flavor wise, but they're probably going to be really interesting in a mechanical sense still
For the next battle spoilers could you guys put the front side in horizontal alignment, just to make them readable on the screen?
Been waiting ALL DAY for this 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Love the plane treatment cards, especially those with new flavour text! Also, take care of yourself Seth, get that throat treated early!
They did a good job on the jumpstart exclusive cards this time around.
I hope you feel better soon Seth!
Prolonging seiges with proliferate is quite a phrexian flavor win
elesh norn in UW control that uses tokens like timely reinforce etc
Orthion is going directly into my Omnath, locus of rage commander deck, because making 5 copies of the commander at once for 30 lightning bolt triggers seems hilarious
If Norn transforms back with the third chapter, you can transform her again at the same turn if at least 3 of the 5 creatures from the initial first chapter trigger survive long enough. So, your board presence just keeps getting bigger.
That's some powerful inevitability right there.
Strange that there are no toxic creatures in this set (or at least none have been revealed yet), except Etali sort of.
He explained Battles wrong. You attack your own Battle and your opponent defends it.
So cool!
It looks super good!
Doubling up incubate tokens with Mondrak.... Not sure it will work since it doubles the tokens but shouldn't also add the +1/+1 counters....
It's probably going to take at least two turns to flip Invasion of Dominaria if cast on curve.
Quintorious is my new boros commandr for sure, works well for boros lantern
Also works in my mardu secret grenzo list
There is one more sword they have to do for the cycle to truly be complete, multicolor and colorless
Big day of spoilers. I’m so excited!
Seth is missing how good Elesh Norn's front side is, that tax on damage is going to be brutal.
You can use all 3 Norns to make just the most excruciating blink ETB tokens deck ever lol. Throw in Mondrak and Anointed Procession and Rabble Rousing and turn those tokens sideways. Put in a Maskwood Nexus to make her back half not punish you. Imagine tapping out to cast a bunch of spells and then having 10 "damned if you do block, damned if you don't block" creatures just blindsiding you
....I missed that Team 1 Eye's ability says etb or attacks. Thought it was just ETB. Wow thats stronger than I thought.
I think Zurgo and Ojutais bounce ability is supposed to call back to the 1 mana zurgo with dash
*Spies the Negate with Ajani*😮
*Reads the lore text in it* 😭
My boy is finally back to his senses at least for now. I pray he stays that way.😅
Ok that UW one makes me wanna run a Knight Tribal Commander deck of some sort cause that is dope. RWU maybe, get dat Mana Flare and whatnot LOL
i wish the battles were rotated to make them easier to read
SETH you forgot to mention the ultimate jank AGAINST THE ODDS "combo" with Invasion of Tarkir. Draw a million cards, reveal a million dragons, and game over! 👹
With borborygmos and fblthp, isn’t splendid reclamation still in standard? Isn’t that just really absurd ramp
Not sure if I missed it, but how are you supposed to cast the back side of battles. Do you pay the cost when it comes in and then again to play the back?
The backside is free when you defeat the battle
Worth noting though, it's reminder text does read that you "cast" it without paying the mana cost. sounds like there is the possibility to respond and counter
hope you feel better soon
14:47 ah yes who could forget Ritual of Rejuvsmination
Etali ETB has me to most excited. There will be so many ways to take advantage of it
Been waiting for this!
Yargle into Voldaren Thrillseeker fling combo lets go.
Elesh Norm enters the list of sideboard cards in standart that destroy green and red decks. the floor is weaker than obliterato and exemplar, but the celing is much higher.
Whose idea was it to keep the battles sideways? I'm here tilting my head trying to read the cards.
Quintorius synergizes with himself, yay!
Curious about thrillseeker in hammertime & chromehost shark in tezzeret
