Sam's appeal to Jon about performing humble duties to prepare for becoming the future Lord Commander reminds me so much of Varys's soliloquy about fAegon being groomed for kingship via humble beginnings in the Dance epilogue.

I also feel like why alot of people are taking the Old Gods faith is the lack of a judgemental clergy. Like with the Seven its all about ritual ceremony and the like and seems to put people in very clear spots in society. With the Old Gods faith it is more informal Ned Stark prays to the Weirwood in much the same way a regular person from the Wolfswood might. There is no need for a temple just a heart tree and barring that your gods are in the water in the wind and the very dirt beneath you, how could they not hear your prayers? Not only is that very beautiful and I believe appealing, magic is quite literally coming back and as you guys mentioned I believe that has something to do with people converting as well.

I think Aemon realizes the value of Jon, when Jon gives him the example of the chain with its different links, that metaphor said as an argument by Jon is very well elaborated. Also the relationship of the Stark house with the Night's Watch. Jon is smart, then we will see when he convinces Stannis to change his tactic in A Dance with Dragons.

32:55 There's a scene in A Storm of Swords, where Jon is practicing in the yard and he starts having hallucinations about Winterfell and Catelyn while violently punching another guy. If Jon is a Targaryen in the books, this might be a sign of Targryen madness on him.

In my mind, I see Jon becoming like Brandon the Builder, in other words, he will reestablish house Targaryen, but...
It won't be the same house that Daenerys comes from, but a rather new house that acts as a hybrid between houses Stark and Targaryen.

You know.... Winterfell didn't have a Sept until Ned built one for Cat. I'm thinking that was a significant development and people are overlooking it. If honoring the old Gods was part of the pact, maybe building a Sept at Winterfell was a major crack in the dam that was keeping the others at bey.

Jeor Mormont: "You came to us outlaws," he began, "poachers, rapers, debtors, killers, and thieves...It makes no matter. All that is past now..."
This is jumping forward a bit, but Jeor's speech gives me hope that Stannis will permit Theon to take the black rather than sacrifice him in TWOW. I know Stannis is abjectly just; that executing Theon is as much a political move as it is dispensing justice, but still...If Theon were to ask to take the black, I believe Stannis would honor that request because Ned would have. He can't attempt to win the northmen to his cause by delivering them justice in Ned's name and simultaneously stomp on principles Ned upheld.
Furthermore, I'm a big proponent of Jon unwillingly reuniting with someone from his past and having to work with said person going forward. I heard it was GRRM's original plan to have Jon reunite with Catelyn at the Wall, but he opted to forgo that plot. George obviously liked the reunion idea; why not keep the essence of the plot but exchange the character? Bran continually reaching out to Theon to restore his sanity seems to imply Theon is needed for something later, so why not go for it if it all fits?

I always thought the Watch entertained the Faith of the Seven since brothers come from all over Westeros and most southerners wouldn't know anything about the Old Gods. Even the North has fallen pretty out of touch with them. Plus giving up their religion after giving up everything else may have been one sacrifice too many for prospective brothers.

I’m a Levite. I always thought the same thing. Our inheritance was God. It’s not every Levite that serves either. You must enter the Temple in Service, and go with all ruling members of the tribe, not just the Davidic line. We run cities, temples, courts, military, healers, teachers, aka Maesters. If the Synagogues no longer bring in the people, we change names, some of us started the Catholic Church, others funded think tanks, universities, holy orders, mysteries schools… The Citadel, The Nights Watch, The Followers of Rholor, Greenseers, Faceless Men, Woods Witches, Castle Maesters, Spy Masters, and then The Priesthood, Maester Conclaves, Witches and Warlocks all probably send representatives to a conclave of the highest of the high. Bravos Bankers definitely have a rep present. This is how it’s always been done in our own world.

Religion gets crazy in Planetos... SERIOUSLY. First, everyone gets it wrong. The First Men didn't worship the Weirwood trees... they agreed to worship in front of the weirwood trees and give them respect for the sake of a continued relationship with the children of the forest. They worshiped the old nature Gods. The Roynar worships the great other... the many faced god... or his 7 different faces... with particular emphasis on the face of the stranger... aka.. the great other, Death... whom I think is playfully labeled or named "Winter"... the horrible creature Bran sees in his coma dream... the reason he must choose to live... to fly... and then names his wolf Summer. Second, what really gets me, is that we learn next to NOTHING about the faith of the Valerians... they named their dragons after their Gods (nature Gods). I feel like the faith of the first men was kind of an offshoot or another interpretation of the faith of the Valerians... nature and nature's God. Yet we don't learn a THING about it... though we know many of the names, as many of the Dragons were named after them. Third, before Aegon the Faith was where the power was... the Faith of the Seven had pretty much gotten a stranglehold on Westeros (except in the North) and the big points of contention was between that faith and the early Targaryens.
