House of the Dragon: Cargyll Bowl vs Clegane Bowl - The Difference Execution Makes. Link to behind the scenes video on the duel of the Cargyll twins (starts at exactly 15 minutes): • Crafting a Royal Funer... - Розваги
Even the earlier scene where Criston gives Arryk the order. Arryk is trying to eat his meal on peace after a tough day at work. His boss busts his chops because his cloak got dirty from doing his job. And then Criston blame shifts the death of the child when, again, Arryk had been doing his job by guarding Aegon.
You feel this pressure and anyone who's had a crappy boss can relate.
1000% this! I literally said to my housemate "oh look, here comes his linemanager" 😅
My favorite part of CleganeBowl was when the Hound got super frustrated and yelled, “Just fucking die!” It made me 😂
I...don't think they intended for it to be funny
@@thedragondemands5186 - I know, but it just hit me that way!
Thematically, it made sense. It shows how good people get pitted against each other in a civil war. Conversely, you could argue going after Gregor contradicted Sandor's arc
The scene was executed perfectly for sure
This dual between the two brothers of the Kingsguard. Was the first thing mentioned about the Civil War in a Game of Thrones book. Before the blacks and greens, there was this dual between the two brothers.
.....no, the first thing was Vhagar killing Arrax

Certain deaths in GOT had no narrative impact. Sandor's for sure and also someone like Barristan. Like what was even the point of Barristan getting ganked by a few guys holding knives? That death (and the Hounds) lessens his story arc for me.
Cleganebowl memes were great back in the day
Empty hype
I had forgotten GOTs so much that I only remembered CleganeBowl when you mentioned it just 🙈 I hadn't even thought of the comparison! (I would say that CleganeBowl isn't even comparable to "CargyllBowl" as they did such a good job with it!) you're right! It was simple but super entertaining, well written and emotional. It wasn't flashy but it filled you up and made you want more!
one of the best episodes from hotd and got combined
Also; I would compare D&D to Michael Bay directing the Transformers movies. Michael Bay just wanted gratuitous explosions, shaky camera work, everything far too fast, too blurred, too many intricate details to even comprehend what you're looking at so it's honestly just a fever dream fight sequence. He didn't need the Transformers franchise just to blow cars and trucks up!
Compare that to the 2018 movie, BubbleBee directed by Travis Knight. He knew the assignment. Simplified the characters designs down to their core recognisable features, have tight close-ups on important details. Fights in THE DAY! (Iknow who would have thought it!?) Fewer explosions and only done when needed to make an important moment more tense etc. Travis Knight knew his fan base, his core audience and made a well made Transformers film which isn't just a bad acid trip!
I feel like D&D just did stuff because THEY wanted to do stuff. "Oh we want to film something in the snow by these beautiful waterfalls - So. We'll just stick a character there, maybe Jon and Dany 🤷🏻♀️ Who cares? Just anyone will do because we wanna film this landscape!" Same goes gor certain fight sequences! "Oh we wanted to do a chase scene through a town.... Let's just make Arya do it 🤷🏻♀️ who cares! Doesn't matter!"
Sorry for rambling!! Thank you as always for your takes and content!
The Obi-Wan & Anakin Lightsaber Fight in ROTS is a good comparison. While it is visually striking with it taking place in a volcano planet with eruptions everywhere, its focus was still on the battle of two men who treated each other like brothers who have then become sworn enemies.
Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen trained for two months in fencing and fitness in preparation for their epic battle in order to get the intensity right. Most of the fight was in the speed it was filmed without any speed up (only one shot was sped up).
There is a BTS documentary "Within a Minute: The Making of Episode III” that covers what goes behind a minute long shot during the duel. It covers scriptwriting, concept art, pre-viz, production design and set construction, props, costume and makeup, choreography and stunts, Lucas' direction, cinematography, sound recording, editing, digital effects, and even office minutia and catering.
While CargyllBowl didn’t exactly use the technical wizardry of that production for the scene, it does bring to perspective that fight scenes require skill and creativity in order to make a fight scene believable while also GENUINELY trying to tell a good story.
I thought this scene was good, but not perfect. As you said, the choreography, the acting skills, the context, the innovations compared to the source material, that was all great. But the dialogue specifically made me roll my eyes a bit. I understand that is just personal taste, but I feel that lines like "You parted us, but I still love you, brother!" are a bit too didascalic for me. Still, this was MILES ahead Clegane Bowl. That's not even remotely a question.
Yeah, CargyllBowl was 🔥🔥🔥
Realistically, it was executed dumbly because as soon as erryk came in arryk should've rushed Rhaenyra without any chance of being caught. Made no sense at all that erryk was able to get so far into the room before arryk ran for her where erryk could magically stop him from killing her. I don't particularly like how the camera focused on Rhaenyra so much during the fight either, at times it should've but we were barely seeing what's happening. And then lastly he decided to fall on his own sword so quickly, there should've been a longer focus on him realizing what he's done and then he does it afterwards. They got too cute trying to alter the source material imo
the moment Erryk realizes what he’s done start when he stabbed Arryk and kills him. From then until he calls Rhaenyra “Your Grace” is him stewing in what he’s done. That’s plenty of time
Unless it’s the walking hypocrite. There’s no bad member of the kingsguard
Lucamore Strong? Meryn Trant?
@@thedragondemands5186 Ser Criston Cole is who I meant as I was unclear but speaking only about HOTD. Both good points though
Bro you gotta let go of D&D. Everything doesn’t have to relate back to them somehow. Just take the new show on its merits-not ANOTHER opportunity to bash the old show. I didn’t like them either but you gotta stop living in the past.
Maybe it's necessary to keep bringing it up until we are sure the message is learned, that is until either GoT is officially retconned / decanonized or remade better.
Cleganebowl was fine, it wasn't amazing and nor was it terrible. It was also five years ago - let it go
I wish they didn’t tell us which twin one. I would have liked to have team green cargyll brother to win, but kill himself over kinslaying
