Nathan, when you mention size, it must follow with numbers or don't mention how the size has been increased.
I see you were in Red Wing, MN! I've driven through there many times. Nice town, seems like a nice place to visit, and a good place to drive around with the bluffs in the area.
My gripes with the Soul are all about the back end of the car. Thick pillars create huge blind spots, the storage is quite small with back seats up, the light (2013) is low on the sidewall, not overhead so its easily blocked by anything next to it, the salesman didnt even know if you can shut it off when the tail gate is open. The front was roomy, the ride was a bit jittery over the potholes, but seems like a decent auto if those things don't matter to you.
Great first drive review! I'm looking forward to a more in depth review later when you get one to test back in Colorado. I wish Kia would add AWD and maybe the 1.6 turbo (or is it a 1.8 turbo).
You're right, and the smaller engine only gets one mpg better. The main problem is the aerodynamics and the fact that there's no fuel-saving technology (such as shutters, energy reclamation or super-high compression). KIA hopes to offset this issue by introducing an electric Soul in 2014. Thanks for watching.

Test drove a Soul+ or Soul! today. Awaiting the new 2014 Kia Forte Koup SX2 w/ turbo and 201hp which is similar to the Hyundai Veloster R-Spec Turbo and above.
Have a 2012 my wife had to have a alien . Didn't know what she was talking about it was a soul . I am six four and fit fine . It came with everything on the inside . Modern direct inj engine 1.6 she gets mid thirtys with 138 hp and a six speed. Then we got to the price 14grand we bought it on the spot.we have had zero problems it is even good in the snow.it has been a fantastic car.

Do you put cooling seat option in this 2014 model?
I'd probably buy it for this single option, because of the sub-tropical southern California weather.

Just drove one. HUGE improvment over the 2010-2012, but havn't driven a '13 to compare between that and the '14, but I suspect the differences are measurable. Still fun but more solid, better handling and substantially quieter. The '14 is really a nice car, my only concern is as they make it nicer and build more quality into it that the price will go up. Price and value were initially a huge selling point.
As a Minnesotan, I'd say that the backdrop looks familiar, but there's many places where they could be...

Prices are way off, the 2014 ! with the Whole Shebang and dealer installed options is over 28K, so over 30K out the door with tax & license. Still waiting to drive the ! all the dealer had was the + with no packages. Nice quality interior but basic,, none of the high tech stuff. Hoping I like the ride with the larger wheels on the Exclaim...but not sure if I want the push button start...like the ventilated and heated seats though.
I'm not all that wild about the styling, but the Soul is a good buy. Especially considering the actual street price and that it is easy to get in and out of and comfortable for even taller drivers. I can see why it sells well.
Kia sent you out to MN... out of curiosity, what was the strangest place or most unique place that you went to a press release?
You either like them or you don't. I have a 2011 Soul now, and never regretted my purchase. I do wish they were better on gas.

They are calling the 2014 Soul "all new" but unlike the Honda Fit or the Mazda 3 it is not a completely different car (and as with the Fit, a whole new engine and trans) They say you should never buy a new model until it's been around a while and all the bugs have been worked out, but I wonder if that really applies here. Another big ? with the Fit and Mazda 3, they just moved their assembly plants to Mexico so not only do we have to contend with a whole new car, but new factory, new employees and possibly new suppliers. Seems like many of the car MFG's are bringing out whole new cars in 2014. What to do.What to do.
Honda fit ... has tires that fit in a pot hole. if you like your back not being sore then buy a Soul and skip the Fit.
Nathan, not a bad review--but it seems like you were seriously understating how bad the fuel economy is. 23/30 for a car the size of the Soul is very, very bad. I mean, there are larger AWD hatches (Crosstrek, 5D Impreza--heck, even the Forester) that get better than that. It does seem like a really poor rating for a small, FWD vehicle.

you cant complain about this car if u haven't driven it lol. you keep stating complaints about the 2013 when the reviewer clearly stated this car was significantly upgraded and suspension was tweaked. did u even watch the video?
I would never own one.. But it seems like the better car of this type..

I'm looking at you Honda with your half-assed 2012 civic and "EXTREMELY NEW MDX"

Well it is more comfortable to drive than a civic. It is less hard of a ride and has a better quality of interior than the civic. It is a good car for someone commuting long distances.
what's stopping me from buying a HOnda fit???

honestly its not a bad car. i bought my 2014 + after trading in my 2012 challenger sxt. completely different cars but i like the soul. i get better gas milage then what its rated for. on my first road trip i was getting between 32-35 on the hwy. road noise isnt bad but i will say the seats arnt the most pleasent. i would have to stop about every 2hrs just to stretch my back out. then again i do have a history of back problems from my job so that could play a role. you wont know what its like til you test drive one.
+mrzack888 They are both subcompact cars. The Kia Soul is a bit larger, has more power, room, cargo capacity. The Honda Fit has better mpg and more versatile "magic seats". According to Consumer Reports, the Kia Soul has "above average" reliability, while the Fit has "average" reliability. I've just traded a Honda CR-Z for a Kia Soul Exclaim. I can't believe I have so much room even though they are about the same length.
mrzack888 sum it up quick new fit vs new soul. fit- better gas milage. soul- higher ride similar to minivan or compact suv hight.

Personally I just really dont this kind of boxy square shape in a car. It increase air resistance and fuel consumption, and it just look stupid in my opinion. So I would take any of the "Audi-shaped" modern Kias any time of the day.

cars like the Kia Soul and its competitors ( Nissan Cube, Scion XB and others) their designs are kinda those love it or hate it personally I really like its design and compared to others it is very nice

Nathan, the worst review yet. You talked about the steering wheel, but never showed it to us. We wanted to see more details of the interior, including the cargo room. This review seemed rushed and like you were missing your camera man. I know this is a press review, but slow down and show more details
still looks ugly as hell! though i will give credit that it does look better than a nissan cube! The cube is just i dont even have words to describe it
