I have a 2017 Kia optima that is a EF I think which means energy efficient. It's not a sports car but I like it I'm sure the hell hope I don't start having any problems I'm at 20,000 miles and so far it drives like a dream I bought it certified with 12,000 miles and I have the warranty that comes with it and I bought an additional warranty. Scotty just check the pcv value or change with brand new one and check it stops burning oil. Because what i was experience before they had issue with PCV valve going bad even if it done only 1000 miles. And I'm not in the US but dealership in here are more useful and friendly with customers they even list the all common issues and they fix those free even when you out of the 7year warranty. It doesn't matter you needs an engine for company fault they do it gor you for free.

The only problem I can remember was the alternator failing at around 280km which was only natural considering the mileage. It was the most problem-free car I have ever had driven. I'm the 2nd owner of a 2011 (1st gen.) Kia Soul. The instrument cluster failed quickly, but fortunately there was still a short time frame of warranty left, so that repair was covered. I've now driven this Soul over 100,000 miles with reasonable normal maintenance. It still runs and drives super good, and still burns no oil. The only constant issues throughout this time is the radio won't power up about a quarter of the time, and maybe 1% of the time, the heat/AC fan won't work. Those issues have been consistent for years and have not gotten worse over time.

The crazy thing about cars; regardless of the make, sometimes you get a good one, sometimes you get a bad one. I’ve got a 2.0L 2010 Kia Soul w/ just under 300K miles. It doesn’t burn a drop of oil. The only thing I’ve had to replace is tires, headlight bulbs, 1 tag light bulb, a battery, and the AC belt. It’s not a sexy car, but it’s never left me stranded. If I had to complain about anything, it would be that if I leave the headlight selector in the automatic position, when you turn the car off the tail lights will stay on if I leave the key in the ignition and kill the battery.

Having had two family members that had Kia's which both had serious engine and steering problems, in both cases Kia fought them tooth and nail to deny warranty coverage to actually repair the defective designs. Even if a car company offers a 100 year warranty but they refuse to honor the warranty or even acknowledge there is any problem, or when they do honor the warranty but the part they replace still has the same defect as the original part, then the whole "much better warranty" part of the equation gets tossed right out the window. Kia is the IKEA of the automotive world. They along with Hyundai focus mainly on styling, and flashy gadgetry but that comes at a sacrifice which is attention to reliability and/or foolproof design.

On mine the roof rack was assembled wrong and the rear bar was put in front of the rear stop. It probably wouldn’t have been a problem except the only way to remove the stops and move the bar behind it was to remove the whole roof rack. The screw for the stop was at the bottom of the bar. The dealership was pissed when I demanded they fix it so I could actually separate the bars farther than 10 inches. They told me you realize that’s a big job…..well yeah I do but you sold me a defective product so fix it. They were so mad they had to remove the window and headliner just to remove two screws it took them 3 weeks to get it done. At first they didn’t want to give me a rental car either so I had to call Kia and complain lol. They told me if I needed anymore warranty work to go to another dealer. You speak truth! Nothing made the dealer and shop manager angier than warranty work. The biggest problem in their case was getting reimbursed by the manufacturer for the labor, parts and not making a profit while doing it...that's why they hated it! Their mechanics didn't work for free and parts obviously cost money. Then there's the fact that a ZERO profit "warranty work" car was now taking up both time and space in the repair bay. I read somewhere that dealers and manufacturers are basically at war, until a customer shows up...then it's both of them against you! (it's very true!)

My guess is that it doesn't burn the oil until the oil gets broken down. In other words, it might not burn any oil for the first 3 or 4 thousand miles, but after that, as the oil breaks down (loses viscosity) it begins to burn. I've read several comments that point to this. It kinda makes sense, but obviously the design is flawed. Change the oil every 3k, and it might do very well.

I think the other commenter was right - it probably only burns oil only during the heating up phase, so it burns more over several short trips that on a long journey.

Spend the whole summer going back and forth with dealerships to get it fixed and the guys there had not even a hairsbreadth of a clue about their own make vehicle. Tried to tell me there was an oil cartridge. 🤦‍♀️

They held the car for three months and decided that they would not change the engine. They did give her a great buy-back price toward a new one. It was cheaper to go that route than to rent a car. I'm glad I found this video. My 2014 Kia started burning a half quart each 1000 miles sometime after reaching 85000 miles. They've been good about most factory recalls, but there seems to have been so many since I've owned this vehicle. They didn't have a fix for the cold engine start code. And they didn't offer any immobilizers even with all the theft going on in the Midwest.

I bought my Kia sportage with 19k miles on it as the second owner. It was the nicest car I had ever owned. I done oil changes every 5k. Around 110k miles it started using 1qt per 1k miles. I replaced pvc and paid a mechanic to do a tune up. At 135k miles on my way to work the engine failed. Kia told me I was eligable for a engine but because I had not done the recalls I couldnt get the engine. However as the second owner I never received recall notices.

i was a mechanic for 32 years and i will tell you that dealerships and dealer mechanics hate warranty work and will avoid doing it if they can
    A. there is no money in it for the shop and
    B. the mechanic gets paid less for the job
so they will try to blow you right out the door until they can't anymore.
i once had a new 87 pontiac Grand prix that had a ball joint go bad and i had gotten a bumper to bumper warranty. three years in the power antenna died and it had a bad ball joint. they kept telling me the ball joint was good. they did not replace it until i threatened to drive the car right through their showroom.
they gave me nothing but grief but i made sure i got my money back out of the price for that warranty

Our Soul (2.0 engine) made it ~80k before it began burning oil. Now right at 100k and it absolutely devours oil. Oil Pressure light flickers regularly at idle due to low pressure (using 10w-30 to keep it somewhat at bay). This is all with religious 5k mile synthetic OCIs with Kia or NAPA filters (and 3750-mile OCIs since oil consumption began).
I expect the engine isnt long for the world now. Had the SC200 recall applied around 90k after the knock sensor began to occasionally fire….hope they’ll replace my engine but not banking on it.
Edit: PS- my ‘03 V8 4Runner burns a half a quart every 5000 miles, with nothing but 7,500 mile OCIs it’s whole life- 201k and counting. Still stuns me how clear it stays on the dipstick.

Two things Scotty is not aware of, it's the Theta II motors only, 2.0, 2.0T, 2.4 and probably new 2.5L. All their GDI motors will need an intake cleaning at 15k, a combustion chamber cleaning at 50k miles due to PCV and GDI. The v6s and 1.6L motors are fine. But the biggest problem is dealers not supporting their warranty, that goes for any make.

I'm driving around a 2015 Kia soul and it's burning oil because the pistons are wearing out but the mechanic at the dealer says they'll replace the engine free of charge when the engine fails. Theta II motors are the problem. From roughly 2013 to 2018. Just run full synthetics, get a valve intake cleaning every 15k miles or so, combustion chamber at around 50k miles and it will keep things clean. I only learned about those 2 months ago. They don't have to take anything apart, both cleanings together ran $650 at Kia. If you have a Kia in those years, make sure you have the knock sensor update, you will have a lifetime warranty on the engine with proof of oil changes. And only use Kia/Hyundai filters, they are made very well.
