  • On the vast Snake River Plain near Twin Falls, Idaho, I found this wonderful Pioneer Cemetery near Rock Creek Station and the old Stricker homesite.
Seven distinct burial sites are located within this cemetery. Each individual's name, DOD, and COD is listed on a descriptive marker. The cemetery is enclosed behind a perimeter fence made, possibly, from cottonwood trees. There is a labyrinth-style entry gate designed to prevent large range animals from entering the cemetery and disturbing the graves.
This is an East-West oriented cemetery. Each gravesite is denoted by mounded basaltic rock. Idaho is laden with basalt, and since there is a creek (Rock Creek) nearby that cuts into the earth, rocks are easily found. Additionally, each gravesite is denoted with a wooden gravemarker cut out by use of a template. I was unable to distinguish any inscriptions on the wooden markers.
Initially, the cemetery gives a similar appearance to the scraped earth cemeteries I have visited in AL, especially the ones I visited during the Association of Gravestone Studies conference in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. However, I believe the maintenance of this cemetery is strictly a functional effort to keep the wild Sagebrush at bay, instead of specifically being designed as scraped-earth designation.
During my visit, a prarie storm blew in from the west. I was treated to a dazzlingly colorful atmospheric display; truly magical.
Thank you for watching my videos.
