I love your videos more than I can even tell you. Maybe in part because I'm a native Californian. So amazing that all Mr. Whitney built is just gone. I paid 3.85 for gas the other day in a town just outside Oklahoma City, the next day it was 4.09, and the next day it was 4.24. As of this morning, June 12, the national average is 5.01. Love my Sunday mornings watching your videos while having my first cup of coffee.
Those bridges were absolutely beautiful! I just wish they would not have demolished that mansion. Happy Sunday to you and Sarah, so good to see the two of you. Sarah you look so pretty perched next to the stones. Some really cute Glam shots! Thank you for all the great information!
Jeff I am thrilled that you go to cemeteries and study those that went on before. Sad that Sarah doesn't share the same passion that you do. Genealogy is alive and well in the world today and what you are exposing are names that possibly people are looking for...keep up the great work
Very fascinating. I'm always saddened when a property like that disappears over time however it looks as though the beauty of the area is still there. Thank you, I really enjoyed this.
Thank you for the history lesson of Rocklin!! I live in Springfield Whitney Oaks and your account of our history was eye opening!! Yes, we have a very unique granite rock quarry not far from Whitney Oaks in the town of Rocklin. You and Sarah also did a great video of my hometown of Simi Valley featuring Corriganville Movie Ranch. You guys get around. Thanks for reminding me how much I enjoyed Huel Hauser's California Gold series, you have just brought back another piece California gold to us. Looking forward to your next video. Oh!! have you thought about doing one on the Empire Mine State Park in Grass Valley California?? the Biorn mansion.
California history is so fascinating! Never heard of Rocklin California so this is interesting to me. I too love seeing the old bridges and learning who put them there. Most interesting tomb I have ever seen! I sure wish they had not demolished that giant house! Thank you for sharing!
Jeff, Sarah, another AWESOME VIDEO!!!! It amazes me the places you take us to! I've lived in our little town for 35 years, watching your videos reminds me that the wonders of our great state are pretty unbelievable! Your travels create in me a desire to get up one morning and start driving! However the price of gas now makes that hard to do. I believe that Northern California has places of interest that a lifetime would not be enough time to visit! No doubt our Heavenly Father when he created this area paused and said this is really good(well maybe)😁 Jeff, as always THANKS FOR TAKING US ALONG ON another incredible journey of hunting for history. You are my go to History guy, Jeff. As usual, another amazing episode. You put the spotlight on stories that otherwise would more than likely be/stay lost in the sands of time.Thank you. I look forward to the next episode. God Bless you, Sara and your family.
Great video Jeff. Despite living very close to Rocklin, until I watched this video I knew nothing about the origins of the "12 Bridges", nor about the Whitney name that is so prevalent in the Rockin area.
I want to thank you so much for making this video. I live a few minutes away from where you filled this and I always love going to visit the Whitney pyramid! I always take my friends to see it when they are in town. Everything is named after the Whitney family around here. This area is rich in history and I love it so much! I do have to say that I'm bummed you guys were so close and I missed running into you. Me and the wife are big fans of the channel and the work you guys put Into it! Thank you again for making this video. Can't wait to share it with the family, they are going to get a huge kick out of this. Since you are up this way are you going to be covering anything around here? Best wishes, Guy
Jeff, I have lived fifteen minutes from this tomb my entire life, and never visited it, nor knew the complete details of Mr. Whitney’s legacy. I cannot thank you and Sarah enough for taking us to these beautiful bridges and the tomb, I shall now visit them in person (on a cool valley day of course!) Wonderful video❤️❤️❤️thank you Sarah and Jeff. Also, I never knew the significance of the name Twelve Bridges (Drive, High School, subdivision) until now! Mr. Whitney built 12 beautiful bridges in Rocklin, and the city has not forgotten his legacy.
Thanks, my sister once rented a house less then a half mile from the memorial park at Springfield but I never knew that Mr. Whitney had a tomb right there. I thought he was buried in either Monterey or Boston. That whole area there is referred to as Sunset Whitney Ranch and part of it is also named Twelve Bridges. Interesting how the great sucking sound of taxes has been so destructive that they caused the new owners of the house to tear it down. It is also the reason why you are paying so much more in California for you gas. I grew up in the Sacramento area but when I retired a couple of years ago I moved away due to the HIGH prices and the oppressive heat in the summer.
Thank you for your very interesting video. My step-father was a stone mason & I can still remember a large church in Columbus, Ohio that he helped build. My brother-in-law retired from the Air Force lived in Rocklin with his family. About 6 months before he passed away we went out there to visit. My husband & I played a round of golf at the Rocklin Golf Course, it was a beautiful course & I had my best round ever there. I wish we had known about the history than. I'm alone now & I'm afraid I'll never be able to go back. My husband's sister still lives there and thanks to you, I'll have something interesting to talk to her about!!!
My brother, who lives in Virginia, watched this and called me right away. I live in Roseville CA and teach in Rocklin! I didn’t know about the burial pyramid or Whitney’s bridges. There are however two schools in Rocklin named after him; Parker Whitney Elementary and Springview Middle School. I also love photos by Ansil Adams so I loved learning that Adams had come here to photograph Whitney’s bridges. Thanks for sharing some local history!
How cool that your brother phoned you to talk about our video! I’m honored! I’m glad you also learned something new about Rocklin and its history! Keep up the good work as a teacher!!!
This is amazing! The Whitney's were not worldwide famous people...but the history you bring to us of these individuals is absolutely incredible. The history of these folks gives me chills. I love this stuff. Thanks again for a great documentary.
Wonderful video. Rocklin residents are living amongst history. That area is beautiful and unique. The Whitney mansion...think of someone building that today! Another rock solid video Jeff...swinging lightbulb is back...eager to buy an HH shirt!
Another excellent show Jeff. I laugh every time you do a cemetery, it doesn't look like Sarah appreciates them like you do. Thank you for showing the bridges, I am so glad they are still around to be seen.
Thank you for all of your great videos Jeff. Especially this one since I'm from Rocklin and the area where Whitney's tomb and ranch is was where I spent a lot of time in when it was basically wilderness when I was growing up. My grandmother was a babysitter for the Whitney family and told me stories about doing that. There is a fascinating book about Mr. Whitney call Fortune Built by Gun that is in the reference section of the Rocklin library.
Jeff you're the best on these vlogs, I've golfed that course and never knew that tomb was there. Again Jeff great vlog! I always sit back with nice alcoholic beverage and watch your channel
Great Video!,Sad to see that the House has been torn down, it would have been a great experience to get to see and tour it...Great job, Rocklin is nice area, would love to have seen it back in his Day.
12:07 I'm always fascinated by how things look years later. Even if buildings are gone your usually still able to tell something from the street layout but this is just almost like looking at two different places. Would never have guessed that those are in the same area. For some reason, I was also struck by the fact those bridges that now about 130 years old have lasted longer than the house did.
Well, good morning. Thanks for another new/old visit to an interesting place. I'm a fan of Ansel Adams too so the pictures he took of the bridges was an added treat.
Great history about the Whitney family! Showing us the old pictures of what it looked like back in the day just really takes us back to that time. Thanks!
Long time subscriber. First time commenting. Just want to thank you Jeff for your knowledge of history and your great narrative of our history. You do a great job, and its appreciated. Love and Peace to you always.
Nice to hear from you finally, Janet! I appreciate the very nice things you had to say. It's hard for us to know who is watching if they don't comment so it was good to see you felt led to leave a message! Love and peace to you as well!
Thank You Jeff. I hit the like button on every video that comes out. Trying to help youbguys out. But, I've never have been disappointed in any video I've watched. Thank You again.
Thanks Jeff and Sarah! I live in Rocklin and was privileged to get to go on a walk to the Tomb. Also, not too far away is a Maidu village site were the pits they dug as the base for their homes are still visible. Sworn to secrecy as they would quickly be ruined by vandals. So sad!
WOW, that is very interesting, Jeff. The property must have been amazing. The pictures of the home, and the interior are so lovely. It's too bad that there are so many versions of the resting places. It's rather sad that the burial area looks a bit overgrown, but that's what time does. very enjoyable 👏👏
I grew up in Rocklin from 1970- 1985. We used to ride back there and I remember telling my mom and brother about the pyramid we found. They didn’t believe me but now I’m in my 50’s and you just took me through an amazing part of my own history. I always thought that they told us the mansion had been destroyed so we would quit looking for more cool stuff. We used to swim in that creek. Anyways, thanks for the video! So fun
Glad you liked it. Growing up in California was such fun back then! We used to ride our bikes miles to a country store just to buy candy. I wouldn't want my own grandkids doing something like that today.
Hey, y'guys, great to see History Hunters in Placer County again! I've seen pictures of the pyramid before. They were always from the backside because I've never seen the front, until now. 😮 Thanks! From grinding stones, to a kids' fort, to a family tomb, to a tourist spot. (there's Kaseberg mansion in roseville, another historical residence)
I ran into you guys a few years ago at a dreary rest stop out near Modesto. You were so kind to my little nephew, who STILL brags about the time he met Patrick Duffy
This is strange because I don’t remember bumping into anybody at a rest area near Modesto. Where exactly was this? I don’t ever recall going to rest areas anywhere in California. LOL
For a number of years, I lived in the area of Auburn, Foresthill, Roseville and Rocklin. I've played the golf course, but never knew about this! One of my hobbies, when younger, was researching and searching for the now gone gold mining town sites. Thank you for the history lesson! And yes, Jeff, there is an old granite quarry in Rocklin.
I drive go threw Rocklin all the time heading to the VA hospital at Mather and have always wondered about the 12 bridges. See the sign for 12 Bridges road . Love learning the history of places around me. Thanks for all the really interesting videos!
Even though it is located in a horrible state now, it wasn't always so. Times change, sadly for the worse. Thank you for shining a light on the positive things in that island of sanity among the "collective". Bless the common sense leaders of Rocklin for preserving what's important, our shared history. I had a daughter try to make a go of it in Rocklin. We loved to visit as it is an absolutely beautiful place. She was one of the lucky ones to escape from Newsom's craziness and come back home. Thanks again for doing your part to preserve our heritage!
💛...grew up in loomis and had a couple campouts as a scout in clover valley and near whitney ranch (mid-60's)...knew a little about the history you covered, but hadn't explored that area...shoot, i'm living in sacto now and i've only been to sutter's fort once or twice, and that's after living here 5-10 years...btw, gas in mendocino is almost $10/gal...it seems the best times to visit central valley locations is early spring, while it's still coolish and the hills are still green...right now, there's a high fire danger...loved this episode (well, all of your vids, but this was close to home)...looking forward to more...
Wow!! I watched that area grow from the 80s when Hwy 65 went through Roseville and was a 2 lane road through the countryside where all you saw was fields of moss rocks till entering Lincoln.. now I know the story behind the exit they named 12 Bridges and the naming of Whitney Oaks! So yes there are several Granite Quarries in Rocklin .. hence the name. Pretty sure the Granite in the State Capital and pretty sure in the Court House built in 1935 in Woodland all came from there !! For a while my daughter lived in Rocklin about 1/4 of a mile from one of the quarries. Maybe someday you can do a video on the quarries.. Thanks Again Sarah and Jeff!! Teaching me stuff about my own backyard! 👍👍
A pair of surviving Whitney mansion doors are now the front doors to "Saint Mary's chapel" located on front street in Rocklin. I believe they are burl walnut. If you go to their website, you can see pictures. I've lived in Rocklin all my life.
Thank you for the tip. I had read that the doors were at the country clubhouse but also think I read about them being at the church. It was very hot that day and we had somewhere else to be otherwise I could have traveled there to video them, too! Your town is very nice!
Taxes are not human greed.....back in the great plains the raxes on abandoned homes(costing a fortune to renovate to livable versus the taxes each year on something that deteriates yearly is not hard to figure out especially if you you seriously shaping to get by) I imagine in CA the taxes on abandoned property is out of site...probably 3 times more than in the plains state.
Great video Jeff. My Great-Grandpa was a mason. The balcony he was working on collapsed, he broke both his legs. This was in the early 60’s. He walked with 2 canes the rest of his life. Needless to say it was hard work.
Very cool and interesting piece of history. I love these hidden gems! The one thing that was very surprising to me was seeing the old black-and-white picture of the area with very little shrubbery and trees compared to nowadays. Completely different. Keep up the great work guy’s! See ya on the next one! Frank from Philadelphia,PA.
Hey Jeff and Sarah my wife just reminded me that my parents live over in Rockin Lincoln area are used to take exit for twelve bridges, I’m assuming that that’s named for Mr. Whitneys bridges in the area. Thanks 🙏 again you both do a great job with your videos! I too love Sarah’s Enthusiasm over the tomb!
Thanks! Yes the Twelve Bridges was named after Mr. Whitney's 12 stone bridges! We appreciate your enthusiasm for our channel and we thank you very much!
Living in Sacto. Rocklin is about a 25 min. drive from where I live. Don't get much. Just passed through a few times.Never knew any of that. Good episode.
I find it cool how these graves, markers, headstones have been around way before WW1 WW2 and some during the civil war. Every time I see a marker I take my time to read it.
Jeff I live very near Rocklin, CA and I never heard of the tomb. Now I see why the area is called the Whitney Ranch. I'll take a look when it stops raining. Up on the highest hill in Rocklin there is a foundation left of an old home. I wonder if that may have been from him. The grinding holes are from the Maidu Native Americans. Hot is an understatement for Rocklin. Can't see the Capitol but on a clear day Mount Shasta can be seen. The rock quarry was called the Ruhkala rock quarry and is no longer working in downtown Rocklin but is 160 years old. When my family moved up here from Long Beach, CA in 1977 the quarry was still operating. It cut granite for most of the old buildings in the Rocklin/Roseville and sent cut stone down to Folsom to build the prison. I saw the Ruhkala place before it was recently torn down and they had all sizes of stone cutting tools and could cut through one of those bridge stones in about half an hour. There are alot of parks in Rocklin. Thanks Jeff for showing me some of the history of the area I didn't know about.
Beautifully done, I really enjoy these Historical pieces. You really do an awesome job with these. I love to see the old architecture. When you showed the Pyramid it made me think of Governor, Hunts Tomb here in Phoenix, Az. His Pyramid is covered in white ceramic tile. Up on a peak in Papago Park here.
I love all your videos all very interesting and educational. Just one question why does Sarah most times look sad or not feeling well. I hope she feels better.
Jeff, I just did a deep dive into Mr. Whitney recently because I enjoy the Rocklin area a lot. If you are ever in the area again, go take a look at his failed attempt at recreating the English countryside to attract more sophisticated east coast people to California. He created a Citrus farm area in Loomis, CA that consisted of several small farms, and a country club that he created for the residents. It would be similar to what we call a planned community today. It failed but you can still see remnants of the community on Delmar Rd where the palm trees were planted by Mr. Whitney to help with attracting new residence to his citrus colony.
He also had an English-style country bridge built over a creek at present-day Clover Valley Park. It's one of his famous Twelve Bridges and it's still there.
Great video Jeff and Sarah. I played high school team golf quite a few times at the nearby and no longer existing “Sunset Whitney CC” in the 1980’s. I was not aware of this historic site! It is really great to see! It amazes me that it still stands today. I am hoping l can make a visit sometime in the near future.😊 PS - (l am not sure if you know)- the other, more expansive, golf course nearby (Catta Vedera) used to be named Twelve Bridges until about 2004?. During the early 2000’s, in all my attempts to learn the origin of “12 Bridges” not a single clue was to be found with by my feeble research skills.😆 Thank you for providing this much sought-after information😊👍🏼
I have lived in Sacramento for over 20 years. I did not know about Joel Whitney. There is so much reference in the area to him though! Whitney Oaks Golf course, 12 Bridges Golf course, Spring Valley Road, Whitney Road. It is all coming together! Thank You! PS, don't Eagle Scouts do great projects. 👍
👋 Jeff and Sarah, Thanks for this stroll thru Rocklin. I had visited there years ago. Lots of nice homes there. You mentioned gas prices. ! It's the taxes that kept getting voted for 😢 I'm at 4.40 a gallon and that's insane. Crazy that Sarah knew about innards!!!

Thanks for the great upbeat message! We appreciate it!
Interesting story. You have been bringing CA History alive for us. Thank you.☮️💖🎶
I don't live all that far away from Rocklin. I never knew it had such an interesting history. The bridges alone are worth a trip. Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome Barbara! Thanks for leaving us the comment!
@@jbenziggy My pleasure.
I am in Wisconsin. Hope when I retire, (hopefully 3 years), ill be able to get out that way to see the good stuff.
Thanks so much Jeff and Sarah!! This one was fascinating! Keep up the great vids and wonderful episodes of California history!
Thank you again. I say it all the time and mean it each time. I appreciate all the stories you share. Things I never knew about. Wonderful adventures.
Love learning about the history of California. Sarah doesn’t act like she enjoys what you do.
So sad!
Great video ! Loved seeing that they preserved those bridges….like the roman bridge structures in Europe
Glad you enjoyed it! They really are beautiful structures!
WOW, that is very interesting, Jeff. The property must have been amazing. The pictures of the home, and the interior are so lovely. It's too bad that there are so many versions of the resting places. It's rather sad
that the burial area looks a bit overgrown, but that's what time does. very enjoyable 👏👏
LOL
@@jbenziggy maybe he met Patrick Duffy!
Thank you for sharing the history of so many things! The bridges are beautiful and I love learning about history!
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching, Monica!
Great show. Good California history and thoroughly enjoyed it!
Much appreciated, Joe! Thanks!
I drive go threw Rocklin all the time heading to the VA hospital at Mather and have always wondered about the 12 bridges. See the sign for 12 Bridges road . Love learning the history of places around me. Thanks for all the really interesting videos!
I like your enthusiasm to learn history! It's nice to hear! Thanks, Chris!
Lay off the Fox News dude
We always enjoy the information in your videos. You make so many unique and fascinating videos. SO FUN !! Thankyou
Thank you so much! We like that word -- FUN!
Thanks for this episode of "History SAVERS"......one of your best. Well done and so necessary to understand the early days of California.
I found your channel a couple days ago. Loving it!! Thanks for your vids.. I enjoy learning about history!!
Welcome to our channel! So happy to hear you like what you've seen so far! Enjoy and thanks!
@@jbenziggy you're correct, those doors used to be at the golf course country club & now are on the chapel.
Such a pity they demolished the Mansion. Human greed values nothing! Thanks for the great episode.
Another gr8 vid Jeff & Sarah!!! Got my HH fix for the week! ;)
AWESOME! Thanks, Chris! Blessings!
Your videos are so informative. I really enjoy watching.
Chris, I appreciate that! Thank you for engaging with our channel!
Bridges an property so Beautiful Thanks Jeff
Hello Jeff & Sarah, Thanks for sharing this interesting story and learning the history. Happy Sunday and have a great day!🌞
Living in Sacto.
Jeff and Sarah thank you for sharing history
Thanks, Jeffrey! For a Jeffery!
Great video Jeff and Sarah
Very interesting! Loved the mansion. Thanks for a great episode, Jeff and Sarah!
I enjoyed the video. You always share lots if information.
Jeff, Thank You for this video Its unbelievable that all the bridges still exist!👍
GOOD SHOW.......THANK YOU!
Glad you enjoyed it, Brenda!
Love them old bridges. Also the stacked roads. Thanks Jeff.
Great informative episode Jeff!
Glad you enjoyed it, Glenn!
Cool episode. You are upping your game. Very impressive
Loved the story thanks Sarah and Jeff
Beautiful video Jeff and Sarah lot of history shared wonder what he would think if he could see his land today
He would be utterly shocked! The world closed in on that spacious land!
Great video Jeff and Sarah.
I played high school team golf quite a few times at the nearby and no longer existing “Sunset Whitney CC” in the 1980’s. I was not aware of this historic site! It is really great to see! It amazes me that it still stands today.
I am hoping l can make a visit sometime in the near future.😊
PS - (l am not sure if you know)- the other, more expansive, golf course nearby (Catta Vedera) used to be named Twelve Bridges until about 2004?. During the early 2000’s, in all my attempts to learn the origin of “12 Bridges” not a single clue was to be found with by my feeble research skills.😆 Thank you for providing this much sought-after information😊👍🏼
Good video. Lived about 10 miles from this in Roseville since 2007. Never new it existed!
Very cool, Christopher! Apparently a lot of folks in the Sacramento region didn't know about this!
Very interesting segment. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I left California back in 95. Many great special memories
Kinda interesting. Never heard of Mr. Whitney in history. Thank you for sharing his history.
My heart about stoped when you put your hand into that lock box. I thought for sure you would of got stung by something. Nice video.
No, nothing happened under there! LOL. Someone yesterday wondered if there was a black widow underneath there but I didn't feel anything! Thank God!
Very nice place. The stone bridges are awesome.
I, too, was drawn to them! Thanks for visiting!
Never knew these parts of California existed, I'd heard of Rocklin but the rest is news. Thanks for another great episode! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Glad you enjoyed it!
👋 Jeff and Sarah,
Thanks for this stroll thru Rocklin. I had visited there years ago. Lots of nice homes there. You mentioned gas prices. ! It's the taxes that kept getting voted for 😢 I'm at 4.40 a gallon and that's insane.
Crazy that Sarah knew about innards!!!
Thank you a nice place to visit.and lots of history.
Thank you Jeff & Sarah! Really enjoyed this episode! We look forward to these “trips down memory lane.” We miss our California home and are thankful for your great content each week! Keep up the awesome work!
You’re biggest Tennessee (formerly California) fans!
P.S. Gas is $4.65 here! (Sorry)😂
Don’t rub in your low gas prices. LOL. Thank you so much dear fans in Tennessee!

Jeff thank you for your hard work on your videos! I grow up in Merced, but I live in Sonoma county “Santa Rosa” because I couldn’t stand the heat over in Merced!
Well it's certainly been hot this week in the Valley! Up until now it's been a very pleasant summer!
