I always wondered, what motivates people to build viruses like these? Like, what were they thinking? My initial thoughts were that most of the autores are engineering students that are just playing while practicing and somehow their 'creations' jump on to the internet. My other thought is that those viruses always have some kind of 'espionage' to leak passwords and stuff.

Hi Dan! Just wondering what you use to emulate Windows 9x OSs. I have VMware workstation, VirtualBox and PCem and know how to use the three. But I can never get great results in emulating these old OSs. Any suggestions?
I think he uses an actual computer with this OS on it, not an emulator. Not entirely sure, but that’s what it looks like based on listening to things like the seek check or visual stuff like the line going up and down that screen. Dunno if that helps, I’m probably incorrect anyway.
When he does emulate them, he uses Virtual PC 2007 which is now Hyper-V Hyper-V is a feature listed in the control panel setting "Add or remove features" and it is not available with any 'Home' version of Windows. Virtual PC 2007 is at best working with Windows 7 and older, but Hyper-V works with just about any OS. I would recommend them because I believe they contain the proper drivers for Windows 9x and XP, so you can check them out. Note: If your PC supports it, Hyper-V can use a faster virtualization technique that can enhance the processing of the VMs.

I always wondered, what motivates people to build viruses like these? Like, what were they thinking?
My initial thoughts were that most of the autores are engineering students that are just playing while practicing and somehow their 'creations' jump on to the internet. My other thought is that those viruses always have some kind of 'espionage' to leak passwords and stuff.
Virus writing at the time was used as a early form of viral message spreading: jokes that wouldn't have any importance in real life, graphical animations to show coding competencies (Spanska's viruses, for example), or simply to create havoc and destruction and terrify users (Little Loc). At the time malware authors organized themeselves in groups notorious for their e-zines and major spreading events.
You can see the code here and it does not appear to do anything like this. Probably just to screw with people but I don't find it particularly funny.
Judging by the fact all the girls in the pictures are Asian, I'd say you need to install either the Japanese or Chinese language packs for Windows 98 to see the proper text and if you did that someone could probably translate it for you. Just a suggestion :)

I think this was a japanese made virus. So if you install the Japanese font it should be readable.
Not Japanese, but Chinese (specifically Big5, which is the encoding used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau).

Hi Dan! Just wondering what you use to emulate Windows 9x OSs. I have VMware workstation, VirtualBox and PCem and know how to use the three. But I can never get great results in emulating these old OSs. Any suggestions?
I think he uses an actual computer with this OS on it, not an emulator.
Not entirely sure, but that’s what it looks like based on listening to things like the seek check or visual stuff like the line going up and down that screen.
Dunno if that helps, I’m probably incorrect anyway.
When he does emulate them, he uses Virtual PC 2007 which is now Hyper-V
Hyper-V is a feature listed in the control panel setting "Add or remove features" and it is not available with any 'Home' version of Windows. Virtual PC 2007 is at best working with Windows 7 and older, but Hyper-V works with just about any OS.
I would recommend them because I believe they contain the proper drivers for Windows 9x and XP, so you can check them out.
Note: If your PC supports it, Hyper-V can use a faster virtualization technique that can enhance the processing of the VMs.
