Many people believe that the symbolism of the song blue banisters is that her use of colors match the healing of a bruise. The banisters go from blue to green and grey, just like a bruise as it heals, which absolutely blew my mind.

i also thought the painting was the main metaphor, where a man came along and "painted" over her and her personality, and even when her friends try to help her heal from the aftermath, she still is blue underneath, and can never change that/the effect the relationship had on her

In ‘beautiful’ she’s actually referencing Picasso’s blue period and how without his depression there wouldn’t be the beautiful art that came out of his blue period. I literally am obsessed with that track. The more you listen to this album the more dots you start to connect and it becomes even better somehow.

Plus the blue period is not just a sad moment, but the real period of time when all of the Picasso art were overwhelmed by the color blue

    • @andrewabernethy4500

@@luizfonseca7439 Yes, that is why it’s called his blue period. Most people already know that. But that’s not the point Lana is trying to make in this song. She’s focusing more on how without Picasso’s depression, his blue period wouldn’t even exist. To create the beautiful works in the blue period, Picasso needed to be who he was, a very sad person. “I can turn blue into something beautiful”

Its not rocket science hehe, she literally sayd that in the song, its not a metaphor. I actually thought that verse in beautiful is very cliche. Liked the piano in the song though.

This was the best reaction I’ve seen to this album! You picked up on so much lyrically and sonically at the same time in a first listen, it was impressive! Nectar of the Gods is about heroin, not weed. It’s about her always wanting to become a singer and make it in Hollywood, but there is a lot of darkness and addiction in that crowd. The famous LA people are the gods and the nectar is heroin. It also reminds me of one of her old songs Gods and Monsters thematically.

violets are something she’s known for as holding of high importance. her poetry book is literally called “violet bent backwards over the grass”. she associates it with her independence, and her individual persona. by saying that she was made to trade her violets for roses, (roses being a symbol of love), she nods toward her personality and independence she was forced to forego to be with her lover. and now she’s falling back in love with herself (and the streets), it’s like she’s reclaiming her violets.

not sure what the significance of "Dealer" is but she's actually extremely close to her father and if I'm not mistaken, he's plays piano on several of these songs. he definitely plays for "Baby Blues". but to my understanding, she isn't very close to her mother. one you listen to the rest of her discography, you'll see how with each album its as if she peels back another layer and Blue Banisters is definitely her most raw and real album. she keeps the same theme but executes it differently each time. This is honestly a masterpiece and im happy to hear you appreciate her art and all that she puts into it

  • @lillyroseuu
    @lillyroseuu 2 роки тому +14

One thing I noticed Violets for Roses is that in "the girls are running around with their masks off and it makes me so happy", the mask reference most obviously points at the pandemic/present moment, but also seems like a double entendre for the metaphoric interpretation of a mask, such as "putting on" a mask that hides your true self, which makes sense given the theme of the song. Lyrical genius once again!

  • @Sandra727Is
    @Sandra727Is 2 роки тому +30

“Dealer” is supposedly a conversation between an addict and his lover or close one, he’s saying don’t reach out for me don’t call my dealer that u know I’m close to (cause he’s using a lot), then continuing to point what explains the downfall by mentioning his absent father
Then don’t call my doctor he can’t heal my spirit like, (therapy hasn’t help him that much) or like he’s beyond help now.
and Lana on the other hand is trying to help and even spill the dealer’s number closer to the end of the song which means she wants to reach out for him even though he’s given her a hard time
That’s my interpretation of the song so far, and it’s my favorite one of her in the recent albums

Hahahah your reaction to Dealer was my reaction to it on first listen 😂 It was initially supposed to be on Chemtrails and she said it was just her "yelling her head off" and then it got cut from Chemtrails and added to this album. So going in, I knew a little of what to expect but it still absolutely shook me lol. I still don't know how the hell she screamed that chorus but did it so musically and beautifully?? Only Lana could pull that off haha. I'm sure someone else here has pointed it out, but the singer on the verses was Miles Kane from the band the Last Shadow Puppets with Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys). He cowrote Dealer with Lana and he AND Alex cowrote Thunder with her. Also, I'm a huge Lana fan and love all her albums, but honestly one of my fav things she's ever done is that badass one-two-punch of Dealer and Thunder so I'm so glad you liked both of them! 🙃

Thank you!! You're the first listener (that I've heard, at least) that was able to get the real, deeper meaning of Text Book. It's a song about her life in some aspects, yes, but it's also a statement on America and trying to rewrite the history of the bad parts. The biggest indicator is when she says, "And there you were with shining stars, standing blue with open arms" as she's literally talking to the "flag." Another interesting note is during the chorus when she says, "You've got a Thunderbird, my daddy had one, too" as her trying to connect the younger generations with the older ones to try and change this country. Text Book is probably the best written song on the album. It just works on so many different levels.

Sweet Carolina is for her little sister Caroline who's also the "Chucky" she references on Blue Banisters. Caroline just had her first child, a daughter named Phoenix, a little while ago and she was afraid she'd struggle with postpartum depression (baby blues). So Lana wrote this song with her and their dad and a friend named Alana (who's in the Blue Banisters music video with Lana and Chuck). This damn song made me bawl my eyes out on first listen cuz it's so sweet 😭💙 Also, I saw someone somewhere say she went full Joni Mitchell in it vocally and I totally agree! Especially since she's been so open about her admiration for Joni and referenced her in Dance Till We Die and covered For Free for Chemtrails.

  • @lucia4836

You're my favourite reaction of this album! Blue Banisters is a very genius song, by the way. I think she means that the man who always came to her would make her blue (paint her banisters blue), but she's done doing that, thus she is now painting them green and grey with her friends, trying not to think about this guy. It was probably a long distance thing, coming every may, or every time it was summer and sunny, for vacation or something. Or maybe it was simply an on and off relationship where the guy made promises but she always kept being sad even though she loved him. She had to understand that even though she was his 'muse', and the love was intense, it was more important to be happy, even if she had no intensity (black Russian poetry). I LOVE Lana's lyrics. She is the best lyricist of this era, in my opinion. And Blue Banisters is one of the best she's written.

I would love to see your reactions to her other work.
I personally enjoy Born to Die - The Paradise Edition: Special version (I know those are also separate albums, but I originally purchased them as a one whole album so that’s how I enjoy listening to it - since Spotify also has them paired that way ) and Norman Fucking Rockwell!

Lana’s strength is her passion to continue exploring Americana and remaining as honest about these unrequited feelings that I’m sure are painful to relive. It makes me happy to see the wide range of music you cover so no everyone feels left out of the mix. I would love to see you react/ review Snoh Aalegra’s or James Blake’s’ discography.

one think about the "f you, kevin" line is that throught the song she tells her sister that this song will outlive them both, so that is basically also an "f you, kevin" that's going to outlive them.
since you liked the interlude, "born to die" and "lust for life" have a lot of hip hop upbeat influence in them plus the poetry.

Blue Banisters is about an unfulfilled promise a man made to her but then her sisters came and painted banisters for her and every-time a man leaves her, her sisters come to paint them.
“Everytime it turns to may, all my sisters fly to me, to paint”
(Notice how her album cover shows unpainted banisters? That’s why. The promise is unfulfilled. He never came back to paint them)
Black Bathing Suit is referencing how media’s backlash works in her favour in the end and also making sure we know it’s all karmic lineage. She has been unfairly cancelled and she is just setting the record straight.
Also, she’s not close to her mother but she loves her dad.
Living Legend is about her friend (maybe mentor) Jane!
Sweet Carolina: it’s about her sister who just had a baby. She wrote it with her dad and sister actually.
Note: Lana debuted before Lorde. Lana’s style is the signature.
In the end, it seems like she is left longing for a boyfriend and love and her banisters are still unpainted. This is the jest I get after listening and analyzing. The album is predominantly about heartbreak, her perception in the media and her love for her family.

The one who plays the piano on last song, SWEET CAROLINA, is Lana's father; Rob Grant. And what's amazing about SWEET CAROLINA record is: It's only ONE take! And that 1 take is the final result ❤️❤️

Please continue to dive into her discography. Her lyrics and the evolution of her songs and productions is pretty amazing, bless thy ears! Also Lana, Lorde and Taylor Swift work with the same producer and song writer, Jack. That's the reason some their songs have similarities.
Please listen to some of her earlier work, Lust for life and Born to Die for that hip hop element and Norman F---- Rockwell is my favorite project from her.

No one is noticing that the black bathing suit IS physically meant in some contexts. In the first prechorus she says her heart is a temple too, and it’s quarantine and she’s alone, so she did eat some feelings up. And i love that and think it’s so beautiful and relatable

Lol this is the second reaction I've seen where someone referenced Breaking Bad to point out that lilies of the valley aren't exactly ideal 😅 For real though, I LOVE Violets for Roses! I love the fact that she correlated the end of lockdown with the end of this relationship. The song has the general meaning that the dude made her change but I think more specifically there might be a connection to "roses are red, violets are blue" since blue is the color of sadness and red is typically the color of love and passion. Coming right after Beautiful, it's like her saying that the guy eventually wore her down and made her change some of her intrinsic sadness (violets) in order to obtain a relationship with him (roses). That's my interpretation anyway lol.
