Cherry Blossom isn’t about a man, it’s about “her future daughter” or maybe a baby she lost in the past. We don’t know exactly. 🥺 And Sweet Carolina it’s about her sister Carolina, also known as Chuck. She was about to have her baby in the time Lana released this album, Lana and their dad wrote this for Chuck. ♥️

Lana didn't promote this album on purpose because she felt was very personal. She said something along the lines of those who want to listen to it will find it. It was kind of around the time where she was getting a lot of backlash during Covid so that might play into it a bit as well

    Some fun facts:
Thunder, Nectar of the Gods, Living Legend and Cherry Blossom were actually unreleased songs but she officially released them here for the first time. Living Legend was recorded in 2013, Thunder in 2017 while Nectar of the Gods and Cherry Blossom were recorded in 2014 and originally meant to be in the "Ultraviolence" album.
About "Living Legend": Lana means Jane Powers. She's Lana's long-time friend and mentor. Also, the "why, why, why, why" in the end was truly Lana trying to mimic a saxophone!

'Blue Banisters' is essentially about motherhood, sisterhood and womanhood in general. The album deals with topics such as having a bad relationship with her mother, taking a motherly role with her girlfriends in order to protect them and also letting herself be protected by them; she sings about her sister and her baby (and her desire to have her own baby) and also letting men go instead of getting stuck with them She celebrates and embraces her body. It's such a statement about her life as a woman in her 30s and choosing a calmer, peaceful life close to friends and family instead of men and strangers. Expect more of these topics much more fully developed on the next LP.
    Love your reactions!

blue banisters is so underrated, i think it fits so well her discography (some might disagree) as well as being the successor of cotcc since we ended that album with her talking about how people will sing for money while there's other people that sing just bc they like it! and that's exactly the vibe since she literally did no promoting whatsoever for blue banisters and said "well, if you want you can listen" (or something similar)

Cass honey, I need you to understand that from now on (Blue banisters/ocean blvd) is all personal, and for once not about a man. She's essentially revealing some of her most personal memories about herself and her family. Her mom being an enemy and her having trouble with her father not coming in to help her as a child/teen. At this point we've moved past boyfriends. She's healing from her karmic lineage.

Cherry Blossom makes me cry everyyy time. Its not about a man, she hasnt spoke on it but theres some theories on what its about. Some say its a lullaby shes written for children or a song she is going to dedicate to her daughter once she has children (Angelina being one of her potential baby names). Others say its a song she wished she couldve gotten from her own mother, like what she wishes her mother wouldve said to her as a child. Theres also another theory which i dont like to talk about too much since it is just a theory but honestly it makes the most sense to me since theres a lot of lines that hint at it and i connect with this theory the most personally. I dont want to say it explicitly but think about the lines 'little ghost' 'Angelina' (angel), 'swing it high like Jesus' 'mommy is there' and The Sycamore Centre is an organisation which you can google and yeah. Idk if its just me self projecting onto the meaning of the song lol but I've seen quite a few people theorise that is what the song is about

    • @DaveFineWhine
      @DaveFineWhine 10 місяців тому +4

You're not wrong - if you know about that interpretation, every line in it makes sense as being about either a hoped for, or a lost baby girl.

It's her most personal by far and kind of angry and Ocean Boulevard definitely continues with those ideas but has some more full production and whatnot. This album is definitely more raw and messy than her others but it feels necessary for her artistic development! Her next one might be my favorite and is without a doubt top 3 Lana :))

  • @aghatabarbosa19
    @aghatabarbosa19 10 місяців тому +9

Okay, I'm gonna do the track by track of MY interpretation of the songs and what we know about it:
    1. Text Book: it's about her daddy issues. I think when she says:"the issue of her", that she's talking about her mom and how she didn't like the life she was living with her family. Also she did go into the Black Lives Matter protest and posted videos on her Instagram and received backlash because it showed the faces of some people breaking windows and stores. Also some people complained online when she released this song saying that she was a white woman profiting with the cause when she sings about it 🙄 I love she says "I scream for them" cuz I think she really cares.
Blue Banisters: it's about a guy she met that promised the quiet life she wants so bad and it didn't fulfill and now her girls help her past thru the low she's feeling after breaking up. Since he promised things in may and spring, for now shes skipping spring.
    3. Arcadia: She released this song on the 10th year anniversary of Video Games, the song that made her famous and on her Instagram page she posted and said that she wanted us to listen to it like we did with video games. Your interpretation was spot on.
    4. Interlude - The Trio: The Trio is an old song from the movie The Good, The Bad And The Ugly which Lana put some beat in it and it's lit
    6. Black Bathing Suit: in this song she's talking about a person that she's in a relationship with but doesn't know anything about her, as much as we do. "You don't know me any better than they do baby". Probably thinks she's someone else, the Lana Del Rey and not Elizabeth Grant. Also, she talks about how the only thing that fits her is the black Bathing Suit and I think it's literal. She received many negative comments online about her body that year cuz she put on some weight (who didn't?). Also in the end she's directly talking about what been hating on the media did to her (stacks lol). Also if you wanna know more about Lana's cancelation on the internet, search for "Question for the Culture" letter that Lana wrote and posted on her Instagram. She named dropped some artist and people called her racist cuz some of them where black women. It's pretty traumatic to the fan base lol
    7. If You Lie Down With Me: it's pretty literal, I don't think I have anything to add
    8. Beautiful: she may be talking about a person that wanted her to change but also might be talking about the media and the fans cuz she was very criticized in her early career, specially after the "I wish I was dead already" interview, about being sad and depressed and how young people would see her message.
    8. Violets For Roses: YEAH DUMP HIM QUEEN
    9. Dealer: this song Lana wrote and sang with Miles Kane, the ex-guitarist from The Last Shadow Puppets. Actually they did write an entire album together but this project never saw the light of the day. Except for the Dealer which I'm grateful for everyday.
    10. Thunder: an unreleased song known by fans because it leaked (like another 200 songs from her) and she decided to release it on this album. Known to be written and recorded in the Ultraviolence sessions.
    11. Wildflower Wildfire: in this song she opened up for the first time about her relationship with her mother in a way she never did before. Her mother sent her away to a boarding school in Spain because of Lana's alcohol addiction when she was 15, to never come back home. After boarding school she was sent to live with her uncle in London and he taught her how to play guitar and that's when she starts to writing music. Amazing song, I relate a lot, my fav of this album
    12. Nectar Of The Gods: another unreleased song, previously known as Color Blue or Wild One
    13. Living Legend: another unreleased song from Ultraviolence Sessions. It's about Jane Powers, Lana's friend and mentor who never cared about Lana being famous and just loved her by her. The (why) part wasn't an electric guitar (which I also agree that sounds like it) it's actually Lana's vocals distorted to sound like a saxophone.
    14. Cherry Blossom: another unreleased song, from the Honeymoon sessions. It's speculated to be about a younger version of Lana that never got to have the sweet and loving care by a mother in the way that she sings about in the song but also (and my theory) could be about a baby she never had or lost and how she would care for her. The parts: little gost, there's much to learn and see and the name Angelina could refer to that child. Pretty sad but I loved it, it's the perfect lullaby.
    15. Sweet Carolina: Caroline (chuck) Grant it's Lana sister. In 2021 Chuck got pregnant with Lana's first niece Phoenix (no, it's not actually Lilac Heaven), and apparently Lana's sister was afraid to get baby blues (post parthum depression). So Lana, her brother and her dad (who's playing the piano), wrote this song for her. Super cute.

About cherry blossom I’m pretty sure she wrote it from the perspective of her singing to her own child if she had one, I think she mentioned in an interview she’d name her first daughter Angelina or something. And Caroline grant aka Chuck is Lana’s sister and sweet Carolina is to Carolines newborn baby that was mentioned in blue banisters hence the ‘there’s a baby on the way’ line :)

I definitely ended up liking this more than Chemtrails in the end, but both are good albums. I mean in her discography there exists no bad album but these two definitely don't feel as urgent as most of the others. Ocean Boulevard is a complete victory and can't wait for the reaction!

While there was a lot of controversy and criticism surrounding Lana in 2020-2021 there also has been her entire career with a lot of questions surrounding the things she has sung about and artistic decisions she has made. This album really speaks on a lot of that. For me, I don’t always see a song as being about a specific relationship even if it’s written that way - for example, I think the song ‘Beautiful’ makes a lot of sense with the context of Lana being criticized for ‘glamourizing’ tragedy and sadness and in that song is answering to her intentions behind what she expresses to the general public. Even in Text Book, beginning with “I guess you can call it text book”, is kind of an answer of sorts to the daddy issue themes, providing a more literal scenario where she does reference her actual father and in Wildflower Wildfire, she says “since I know you want to talk about it” “you say there’s gaps to fill in, so here” is referencing how many people have assumed that she only writes as a character and that there are inconsistencies with her life vs her art or even just general things that people don’t know about her so she’s finally providing further context, opening doors to sharing her full story such as detailing family trauma. She’s saying ‘here’s the actual story.’ And this along with mentioning her family is something that opens the doors for the conversations that are also had on the next album too. I don’t really see this as a world of music or a solidified story like her previous releases, instead I imagine it’s the same timeline with Chemtrails, which really put a period of sorts to the end of this career-long story, where she now has the moment to look back at previous moments in her life as well as answer to her critics. I do get the sense of it feeling confusing especially given the track list - I’ve organized my listening experience a particular way where I feel as though there is a beginning and end with a lot of the more contemplations (and specifically, older songs) in the middle.

I found your Lana videos a couple days ago and binge-watched them over the course of three days lol. Its so fun to watch someone experience Lana for the first time - you bring back the feelings I had when listening to her for the first time. I love how you actually take the time to read lyrics and pick them apart. I’ve been listening to Lana for almost a decade, and you’ve made me notice things I never have before. I can’t wait for you to react to Ocean Blvd as it is my favorite album of all time. Not every song is one of my favorites on its own, but the album as a whole just comes together to make a masterpiece.

    A couple of thoughts:
∆ Thunder is my favourite from this album. The meaning of the song is that Lana is asking the guy to leave her already because she knows he'll leave her like the men in her past. "just do it, don't wait". It's so sad honestly.
∆ Cherry blossom is about Lana singing to her imaginary daughter. Giving her the mother that Lana never had. Some people interpret this as Lana singing to her child self. Becoming her own mother in a sense. It's beautiful but damn heartbreaking.
∆ Blue banisters the song is super underrated. The poetry here is insane.
∆ People call this album all over the place but idk I find it very consistent. There's theme of a breakup and finding joy in the world around you especially around your family.
Now for Ocean blvd it does everything better than Blue banisters. Lana spills soooo much tea on her past so all the gaps she wanted to fill in Wildfire Wildflower get filled in Ocean blvd. Sonically speaking I'm not going to spoil anything but it's similar to NFR in a sense that's it's "all encompassing", a lot of variety in the sound but very strong sense of a theme.

This is not my favorite Lana album but it's still so special... it was so good to have this at the end of the pandemic, is so personal to her yet some songs are so relatable.
I think Sweet Caroline is my favorite, Lana sings to her sister Chuck this song. Chuck had a baby and was afraid of having postpartum depression and Lana wrote the song to her. Is so beautiful.
I also love Wildflower Wildfire, it's one of the songs in her discography that explains a lot of who Lana is and why is like that.
I think you will love Ocean Blvd. I hope you make a final video with an overall ranking or maybe overall thoughts... I don't want this journey to finish :( it's been great, you are the best reactor 🥹

I love this album so much. It's my comfort album. I love the poetry in the lyrics and the rawness of the production.
This album is more related to the pandemic and Lana seems less confident in it because it was written during the pandemic and during a time when Lana suffered a lot of criticism for gaining weight and for giving her opinion on things, like for example, she has always been criticized for narrating toxic relationships in her songs, but other singers were at number 1 on the Billboard top 100 with songs about sex. She received a lot of criticism for saying that.
Chemtrails was written in 2019 when Lana was at her peak and was supposed to come out in 2020 but as vinyl production was delayed due to lockdown, it was constantly delayed until 2021.
Lana needed (for her mental health) to release this album, to let these lyrics out of her to get rid of these feelings and move on to something new and beautiful like Ocean Blvd. This is an "end of cycle" album and I think it serves its purpose very well.
By the way, in Living Legend it's not an electric guitar screaming "why", it's Lana with her voice imitating an electric guitar. Sweet Carolina is for her sister who had a baby, Cherry Blossom for her unborn daughter and Living Legend for her friend who died.
As you said, in each one she gives us something different with her voice and I love that in this one she explored that a lot.
Top 5 Lana Albums, for me. It's not music, it's poetry. It's like a hug everytime it plays on my record player.

Her dad is still married to her mother, so in Wildflower Wildfire she is refering to her. Cherry Clossom is a lullaby that Lana wroted in 2013, that can be interpreted as one for her future daughter (being Angelina like the name she´d choose) or on the perspective of the the mother she never have, being Angelina a pseudonym for Lana herself. And Sweet Carolina is for her sister, Caroline. She had a baby and baby blues a kind of sadness that a woman may have after having a baby, also the song is cowritten by her and their father Rob Grant, who is playing the piano. They all four (including her brother Charlie) have a very close relationship.

Black Bathing Suit is really mostly about the hate she got in 2020-2021(2022) for gaining weight. Especially Azealia Banks (it actually all started in 2018 I think; you'll find smt on YT about their whole beef), who mocked Lana for gaining weight with paparazzi pics. The whole public as well. And then we have "question for the culture" (to answer you the question why lana was so hated) which is kind of a statement lana posted back in 2020 explaining that she felt extremely misunderstood. people took it the wrong way because lana mentioned some other women by name and said that she was racist (I still dont understand why and HOW poeple come up with that shit)... but usually the fake news and negative stuff goes more viral than the real and good things so yeah
it's been a rough time for lana stand in that time period and lana really tried to make her points clear but poeple are very ... u know hahah
there is a live lana did (it's on YT from 2021 I think to the release of BB) where she talks a little bit about that and teases ocean Blvd, it's an hour long but it's the most rawr I have seen lana ever // or any celebrity, so I recommend to check it up ❤❤❤❤ love your reactions

Ahhh i love this album so much.
I think the guy who shes talking about in this album is Sean Larkin. He was a police officer in tulsa (tulsa jesus freak, Oklahoma in BB, the guy in text book).
I think she really thought he'd give her this kind of perfect, stable life, a marriage, kids, family. Of course he didnt. He never came to help her "paint those banisters" in the metaphorical house they were building together building. Sort of like false promises and dreaming of a life, hopes and dreams that deep down they know will never be met. "Getting lost in the purple rain."
In text book, she says she saw that he saw who she was. I think she thought the ways they were different would set her free and give her that life she kind of romanticized as she ages. They dated during the pandemic too
