At the end of the day, the late 2021 update CX-5 is merely a further progression and extension of the original Mazda Minagi concept which was revealed way back in March 2011. So, the ‘KX’ CX-5 platform is very much a creation of the 2010s. For those who are not in a rush to buy a compact Mazda SUV, one would perhaps be better served to wait for the next model. However, a true KX successor has not even been sighted in testing. So, who knows what Mazda’s plans are for the CX-5 for the middle part of the 2020s? If nothing else, the CX-5 serves the needs of those who want a truly compact SUV which is only 455cm long. Mate it looks old af, basically the same car for the last 4 years and completely left behind by every competitor. Just look at the infotainment not even being touch screen haha My wife and I checked this out in a dealer recently along with the Rav, Sportage and Tucson. The CX5 honestly felt years older than the other 3, and I have no skin in the game and was coming in brand neutral as I don't own any of them
@@therealkrisjenner the Sportage is very cool I agree. Guess I'm just disappointed the CX5 didn't get more of a facelift as I was seriously considering it due to the very positive reviews about its performance and handling
I own a 2018 cx5 diesel. Drivability is fabulous due to very well matched torque gearbox and engine power. Great for towing and it doesn’t recognise hills. Overall a very well developed package. Looking forward to CX70 3.3 diesel
When there is turbo petrol, why would you want diesel? Turbo's were only introduced to diesel variants because if there were no turbo's the diesel would be a laggy dog of a dangerous engine. Combine turbo with a petrol and you get the punchiness and smiles as you see in this vid. Forget diesel, that's for trucks.
i think they should at least update the interior similar to the cx30... the interior is starting to show its age in my opinion. All they have really changed is the infotainment screen and the head and tail lights.
100%. It feels bizarre to sit in a 2019 Mazda3 everyday and have it be so modern then step back to into this “2022” CX-5 that shares a lot of interior elements with my older 2014 Mazda3.
That's great they have put in the wireless phone charging as I am using a cable from the centre console to the front for the phone charging. Great review again. Thank you.
I got the GP SP ex demo back in May 2022. Love the car but regret I didn’t get the turbo version. The NA version is good but when you load it up with 4 adults and luggage, it becomes very asthmatic.
Hi Paul great review , thanks for the 0-100 km in 7.52 , was that on standard fuel , would presume would be a little quicker on 98ron fuel ? I noted your last alkera test review with the 21MY was 6.84 seconds ..

WOW ... I have the 2022, 2.5L. purchased in May '22. non premium model ( no sunroof, wood paneling, turbo etc) Mine does have touchscreen. Seems it much have disappeared when they went to the longer/lower screen 😥 Pleased I got the version I have. I love the car it's a great drive. The rear seats are ALWAYS in the down position as I do lots of carrying of gear in the back ( no kids to worry about) I have only 2 complaints about the car. #1 a significant safety thing -- Fan speed buttons use require taking eyes off the road to use them. They are small and located low down. Should have been a better placed rotary knob for ease of use and no eyes leaving the road. #2 the hinge section of the drivers seat, on the right side, digs into my upper right thigh and gets freakin uncomfortable on longer trips. I have had to put in cushioning under the seat fabric/padding to try and ease the problem ( partly successful) Other than those 2 things, it's an awesome car and would buy another CX5 any day ( switched from multiple Toyota cars over many years) I/m tall, around 6'2 to 6'3 and trying to find a car that has both head and leg room for me is difficult. The CX5 was spot on. Toyota could no longer compete cheers, Dave
Definitely BMW of Japan, taking the crown Honda had in the 90s. They drive incredibly well compared to other mainstream cars in its class and feel a cut above.
all those futuristic 50k cars, Hyundai, mistubishi, Nissan, kia. look terrible, trying way to hard with crap feeling plastics. I'd prefer this cx5 anyday. aged very well with many updates, which is what I prefer. and the Akera interior ❤❤ I want
You nailed it. It's like Lexus. Stick to model and makes it perfect rather than facelifting once in every 5 to 6 years and takes another 5 years to make it trouble free / complete all recalls. Me, had a JDM Estima. Now a Kia Carnival. For a 15 yr old Estima, kia can't stand. Any day I would buy Mazda ,Toyota, Suzuki or Lexus.
Go for Mitsubishi Outlander recently I have gone for Mazda showroom for cx-5 I was initially planning to purchase max sport it’s 43,000 but it does have back sensors and auto sensing key but in outlander they are offering the power talegate and everything
The outlander is a great car for cruising along and it’s well equipped in the higher specs but it’s handling, especially body roll in cornering, is not comparable to the CX5, it isn’t a driver’s car like the Mazda. If you get the PHEV the cornering is quite alarming until you get used to it and take it easy.
and it's gone up another 6 grand (Akera) since this review. In fact the GT sport, now, is a few grand more than this Akera in this review, just a few months later. Crazy. Mazda have lost the plot. It's now a 60 grand car. My sister got a relative bargain for her Akera Turbo at 53 a year back and I told her back then it was too expensive but it was still a hard time to buy a car.
great review Paul, sadly we don't get the turbo option in UK (bloody emission regs), so our CX-5 is rather gutless, with poor torque. At least now they offer the 2.5 (194PS/258Nm) engine, when i had my 2018 MK2 model, 165PS 2.0L was all that was available, if you didn't want diesel. I thought with the face-lift, the Skyactiv-X engine would have been used.
Hi Paul, what are your thoughts between this CX-5 top trim vs the GV70 2.5T? Is the Genesis infinitely better than the Mazda in terms of luxury/features and driving dynamics? Thinking of picking one up as a company vehicle so the price difference isn't a deal breaker. Thanks.
Hi Paul, I am seriously considering purchasing the Turbo GT CX5 just wondering what your thoughts were on the Toyo Tyres the test vehicle was equipped with ?
Ive been on youtube looking for vids about mazda cx-5 2022 and like in here some youtuber did 0-60miles or 0-100km, however there are discrepancies between them. redline review and alex auto (used 2021 cx-5 but with same turbo engine) did 0-60miles in about 6.5seconds while carexpert n PDrive TV did in 7.5seconds. is it because different type of fuel being used or mazda used different engine for north america and australia?
My wife has the original 2012 top of the range and it’s been a great car, how ever the 2ltr engine is way under powered and I think the engine and transmission speak two different languages. It’s always in the wrong gear.
I Have the 21 GTR and even with the turbo the transmission just can't get it done. When i manually shift I get way better performance with a sacrifice in fuel economy
Interesting seeing a manual tac gauge for engine temp. Mums mazda 2012 didnt have one just a hot or cold engine light. Made a lot of sense to me, especially for the common persons car.
Mushy Suspension!? In Sep.22 I test drove the GT SP and appreciated the stiffer suspension all the reviews talk about. Coming from a Subaru it was a big deciding factor for me. Just picked up my 2022 Akera (built Oct.22) and have put 600km touring on it in 2 days. Have they changed the suspension or is the Akera tuned differently to the GT...for 75 year-olds (no ageism intended)? Yes it soaks up bumps but it wallows and dives through bends....not Zoom Zoom at all. Going in for the 1k service next week. Is there anything they can do to stiffen it up (please, please, please)?
The CX-5 reminds me of any current model Audi. If you are not intimately familiar with the models, you wouldn't be able to tell which is the newer model compared to its predecessor.
Agreed, lagging behind like Toyota. I love the Mercedes style implementation in the Kia Sportage. Even the more vanilla virtual cockpit in the Tucson looks fine.
The CX 5 sold in other parts of the world you can close the centre vents like the outer vents. Why don't we get that in Australia? Penny pinching for Oz? And also when is Mazda going to put DRL on all their cars instead of just the top models in Oz? Nealy all the other car manufactures have DRL across the whole range.
I didn't realize how small the boot space is in these things, I was parked one space over with a CX-5 rear facing to me at the shops waiting for my wife and the young lady owner was loading her shopping into the boot, she squashed her bags down closed the boot then had to raise it re push things in then it finally closed, it wasn't that many bags at all.. These things are not ideal grocery vehicles especially for a large shopping haul. The CX-5 is so much smaller in person than online video/pictures. In comparison the Subaru Forester is so much bigger in person than in video/pictures.. The Forester has a way better boot space for shopping bags..
Performance wise, only the top spec European luxury models can top it, the CX30 is slightly quicker and the rav4 prime is very slightly slower but all 3 are very similar.
The CX-7 turbo and the CX-5 turbo use totally different engines. CX-7 was the Mazda L-Engine (which Ford used as the Duratec and later the EcoBoost 2.0L/2.3L). CX-5 uses the Skyactiv-G which is a totally different concept
Do people really give a toss what the durometer figures are for each car? To me, this is like sharing what brand light bulbs they use for the entire car or what colour the starting battery is. Simply stating "they're soft touch.... etc" will suffice. I for one prefer to see it gone from your reviews.
@@daweigo6851 Or maybe just skipping that section (which I do) is a smarter action, don't you think, Dawei? But I was really curious to know who really finds the durometer figures interesting, hence the question. So I guess you do, huh?

He’s objective and tries to cover all bases - given how much reviewers bang on about soft touch materials, I appreciate him taking the time to quantify it rather than every other reviewer that says something meaningless and subjective - basically the goal of this channel tbh - it’s far more systematic than other more flowery reviews that beat around the bush.

I have had several CX5 Akera's last two been 2.5T awesome cars very good value for the money, good quality with the finishes, waiting for my new one to arrive in soul red be here two weeks hopefully. Think the refresh on the new model keeps it up there with the others in the market.
Read your comments above? Have you received the new model, does it meet or surpass expectations. Considering buying the Akera 2.5T myself.
@@peoplelikeus3684 yes i picked it up a week ago and yes it is awesome, same great motor the little tweaks they made are great also the new screen, the seats feel a lot more comfortable, and its a touch quieter, I genuinely endorse the Akera CX5 Comparing other SUVs I think it is up there with value for the money.
@@JAGMANMK264 We might be replacing our aging, out of warranty (and increasingly expensive to service) 2017 Mini Clubman JCW. Its a wagon. Been a pleasure to drive, but time for it to do. I'm keen to go up a size and maintain some turbo thrill.
How is the Bose audio system and other accoutrements over the GP SP? Worth it for the extra $$$$'s?
@@peoplelikeus3684 yeah I think it is worth the money I drove the GT for a while on loan and was just as impressive, but I have always gone for the Akera,
The Bose gives a great sound. the nappa leather is very nice with ventilated seats keeps you nice and cool.
@@JAGMANMK264 That's great feedback. Thank you Stephen 😊
I have the 2019 cx5 turbo and I like it.
The Akera in South Africa comes with a blacked out grill, gloss black wheels, black side mirrors , black roof headliner, gloss black wheel arches.
Great review as usual Paul!
Personally, I don’t think this car is showing it’s age at all. I like it very much and I would probably buy this over the RAV4 if I was in the market. Although, I would love to see a MG HS PHEV review if possible? Thanks
Mate it looks old af, basically the same car for the last 4 years and completely left behind by every competitor. Just look at the infotainment not even being touch screen haha
My wife and I checked this out in a dealer recently along with the Rav, Sportage and Tucson. The CX5 honestly felt years older than the other 3, and I have no skin in the game and was coming in brand neutral as I don't own any of them
Well I like it, though I would rather a sportage
@@therealkrisjenner the Sportage is very cool I agree. Guess I'm just disappointed the CX5 didn't get more of a facelift as I was seriously considering it due to the very positive reviews about its performance and handling
I had the Rav4 and traded it in for this. No regrets
B
5000 kilometres in the 2022 Akera diesel
Man do they boogie
And the wife’s turbo petrol Akera is beautiful also .
The facelift has helped but it is starting to age a little bit. The 2.5lt turbo in the Mazda 6 absolutely pulls
Let's take a moment and appreciate the return of the red suitcase, no more black camera gear thingie😁😁😁...
Where did Paul find it🤔
I own a 2018 cx5 diesel. Drivability is fabulous due to very well matched torque gearbox and engine power. Great for towing and it doesn’t recognise hills. Overall a very well developed package. Looking forward to CX70 3.3 diesel
Great review Paul. Would be nice to see you review the Akera Diesel version. Interested on your thoughts.
@@joebloggs2312
Rubbish. Torque, fuel economy and towing....turbo diesels do all three better.
I think the Mazda still looks better than its rivals
Still the pick of the bunch especially with the Turbo
As always great reviews Team!
i think they should at least update the interior similar to the cx30... the interior is starting to show its age in my opinion.
Thank you.
kia and Hyundai while wireless are still wired.
Purchased the cx5 touring. My wife preferred the look and drive of the Mazda
I got the GP SP ex demo back in May 2022. Love the car but regret I didn’t get the turbo version. The NA version is good but when you load it up with 4 adults and luggage, it becomes very asthmatic.
Nice review Paul. I’m looking forward to buy a CX-5 GT SP.
Hi Paul great review , thanks for the 0-100 km in 7.52 , was that on standard fuel , would presume would be a little quicker on 98ron fuel ? I noted your last alkera test review with the 21MY was 6.84 seconds ..
I think that’s a really interesting point I believe if you use 98 Ron it does increase the power of the engine.
@@scubasteve4001 thanks for reply , yes I believe it increases from 170kw to approx 184kw on 98ron fuel ..
@@scottedwards948 Drop in a K&N air filter and look at. I can’t wait to get mine I bought the machine grey. Was love at first sight. The high gloss black wheel arches helps make the car look aggressive with the black rims can’t wait to drive it.
I think its a missed opportunity for Mazda not to also use the LED DRL's as LED Indicators. I think the vehicle otherwise looks great. Great review as always Paul!
I have had to put in cushioning under the seat fabric/padding to try and ease the problem ( partly successful)
Other than those 2 things, it's an awesome car and would buy another CX5 any day ( switched from multiple Toyota cars over many years)
I/m tall, around 6'2 to 6'3 and trying to find a car that has both head and leg room for me is difficult. The CX5 was spot on. Toyota could no longer compete cheers, Dave
In my opinion with the ew faceift it looks more premium but honestly in my opinion MAZDA is starting to become the BMW and MERCEDES of JAPAN .
Definitely BMW of Japan, taking the crown Honda had in the 90s. They drive incredibly well compared to other mainstream cars in its class and feel a cut above.
Waiting to get my CX5 Maxx Sport in sonic silver
If I was in the market for the mid size suv I would be choosing between the cx5 and rav4. Most likely I would end up with the cx5
Even Honda is adopting Mazda's elegant design with the Hrv Vezel. Still elegant looking and no fakeries 👍👏
It still looks good 😊; I guess they are going for “ if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” 😅
When is the lx600 review coming?
Odd imho that the HUD has never got a mention?
all those futuristic 50k cars, Hyundai, mistubishi, Nissan, kia.
look terrible, trying way to hard with crap feeling plastics. I'd prefer this cx5 anyday.
aged very well with many updates, which is what I prefer. and the Akera interior ❤❤
I want
I can’t believe you compared Mazda’s beautiful front end design to the Mitsubishi Outlander. Give yourself an uppercut immediately.
Great review! But what's the difference between the last CX5 turbo review. In last review, 0-100 only used less than 7 seconds.
Hi Paul, it would be nice to show mid segment models since majority of consumers are in that segment, only 15% goes for top of the ranges.
Check if this helps in understanding why rear diff has 1% extra speed than front
Love it!!!!
Good style doesn't go out of style. I hope it looks like it does forever.
I would like to know this car and out back subaru 2022❔which one is GOOD ?
I’m stuck between choosing this, Rav4 for a Havel H6 GT. I work at Mazda here in Australia but we also sell a large range of other brands😩
Keep up the good work
We are all showing our age. It’s called maturing.
and it's gone up another 6 grand (Akera) since this review.
U see how the lights illuminate on the speedometer while charging towards 100
my local dealership is quoting 56k for Mazda GT SP including on road cost with no cap price servicing. wondering if that's right ?
Order two Akera
Turbo petrol and turbo diesel
great review Paul, sadly we don't get the turbo option in UK (bloody emission regs), so our CX-5 is rather gutless, with poor torque. At least now they offer the 2.5 (194PS/258Nm) engine, when i had my 2018 MK2 model, 165PS 2.0L was all that was available, if you didn't want diesel. I thought with the face-lift, the Skyactiv-X engine would have been used.
No 2.2L turbo diesel either? Has even more torque than the 2.5L petrol. 450nm
Thanks.
Genesis GV70 is poised to compete against the CX-60 or Lexus NX, not this. This goes up against a Hyundai Tucson or RAV4.
Hi Paul’s team. Can you do a review of the cx5 with the diesel engine?
What is the horsepower per ton of this vehicle? This is the best measurement whether this vehicle is under powered or not!
Hi Paul, I am seriously considering purchasing the Turbo GT CX5 just wondering what your thoughts were on the Toyo Tyres the test vehicle was equipped with ?
Do you have plan to update the CX5 data specially the noise level?
Still looks GREAT !!!
Why didn’t you test in uphill road for awd as we test pickup?
The fact that an awd 2.5L turbo takes over 7 seconds to get to 100kmh is pretty sad isn't it?
but depending on the road conditions and surface of the road it took in half a second
It is a soccer mom’s car TBH.
Yes it is
Still a bit slow, it would be heavy tho.
not sure if it’d make a big difference but it’s not broken in yet
good review!! I still see the i-stop feature on the dashboard... what opinion on this feature??
You can turn it off, but you have to do it every time you start the car.
It is because of the fuel. If you use premium fuel, the HP will increase to 250 while with the normal fuel is 227 HP. That makes the difference.
Aging like fine wine 🔥
This needs the CX60 interior design
How does the punchy 2.0T Escape compare?
When will Mazda create CX5 Hybrid, I believe if and when they will have huge interest in the market place just saying gut feeling ❤
cx50, cx60
Is Australia going to get the CX30 TURBO?
My wife has the original 2012 top of the range and it’s been a great car, how ever the 2ltr engine is way under powered and I think the engine and transmission speak two different languages. It’s always in the wrong gear.
I Have the 21 GTR and even with the turbo the transmission just can't get it done. When i manually shift I get way better performance with a sacrifice in fuel economy
Interesting seeing a manual tac gauge for engine temp. Mums mazda 2012 didnt have one just a hot or cold engine light. Made a lot of sense to me, especially for the common persons car.
I have a 2021 cx5 but the istop sometimes is not working
Hi I don't understand u exactly but I guess Mazda cx-5 has not have good suspension system? Pls approve me.thanks
Love the upgrade, Oh and Space saver wheels should be illegal !
Better than no tyre at all 😂. Which a lot a car makers are starting to do
The CX-5 reminds me of any current model Audi. If you are not intimately familiar with the models, you wouldn't be able to tell which is the newer model compared to its predecessor.
How does mazda still not have a digital drivers display.
It does, plus Heads up as well.
@@daves5988 it’s not a full display only the middle part is digital
how does a kia and Hyundai not still have a driver's digital display.
@@dirtygore they do wtf have you seen the Tucson and sportage
Agreed, lagging behind like Toyota. I love the Mercedes style implementation in the Kia Sportage. Even the more vanilla virtual cockpit in the Tucson looks fine.
Hi Paul great review is the CX5 apple car play wireless?
2023 is but I think 2022 is wired.
VERY GOOD LOOKING!!! 😃
What is the model called? Previous was KF
how about the cx8 any updates?
Good stuff
I live in Britain and really want a cx5 but the engines we have here are terrible
Hi Paul what do you think about the I stop that Mazda’s have?
Its a pain in the arse and does nothing for fuel economy. It can be disabled but defaults back on the next time the car is started.
@@gsau3000 I believe you can unscrew the sensor from the hood and it will disable i-stop
VERY Good Looking SUV 😃
The CX 5 sold in other parts of the world you can close the centre vents like the outer vents. Why don't we get that in Australia? Penny pinching for Oz? And also when is Mazda going to put DRL on all their cars instead of just the top models in Oz? Nealy all the other car manufactures have DRL across the whole range.
does it have head up display
Yes it does
I didn't realize how small the boot space is in these things, I was parked one space over with a CX-5 rear facing to me at the shops waiting for my wife and the young lady owner was loading her shopping into the boot, she squashed her bags down closed the boot then had to raise it re push things in then it finally closed, it wasn't that many bags at all..
These things are not ideal grocery vehicles especially for a large shopping haul.
The CX-5 is so much smaller in person than online video/pictures.
In comparison the Subaru Forester is so much bigger in person than in video/pictures..
The Forester has a way better boot space for shopping bags..
aahahahaahahah yeah rite !
What are this SUV's competitors performance-wise in the segment?
Performance wise, only the top spec European luxury models can top it, the CX30 is slightly quicker and the rav4 prime is very slightly slower but all 3 are very similar.
@@paulm2467 the cx30 is quicker than the cx5 turbo?
@@peoplelikeus3684 yes mate, it's smaller, lighter with better aerodynamics and the same engine, the CX30 is sub 6 second 0-60mph.
I hope this turbo engine is better than the previous cx7, nickname in the industry for those were bombs, always blew up around 100,000 KMs lol
The CX-7 turbo and the CX-5 turbo use totally different engines. CX-7 was the Mazda L-Engine (which Ford used as the Duratec and later the EcoBoost 2.0L/2.3L).
CX-5 uses the Skyactiv-G which is a totally different concept
@@YZJB thank goodness for that lol
That was a 2006/12 model when Mazda was tied up with Ford, this engine appears to be pretty bulletproof with plenty of 200,000+ mile cars around.
Do people really give a toss what the durometer figures are for each car? To me, this is like sharing what brand light bulbs they use for the entire car or what colour the starting battery is. Simply stating "they're soft touch.... etc" will suffice. I for one prefer to see it gone from your reviews.
😂👍
Maybe dont watch if you find it that annoying 🤣 plenty of other car reviews you can watch
@@daweigo6851 Or maybe just skipping that section (which I do) is a smarter action, don't you think, Dawei? But I was really curious to know who really finds the durometer figures interesting, hence the question. So I guess you do, huh?
Eh that’s what I like about Paul.
