Dumbledore is the only wizard Voldemort is scared of and the only wizard more powerful than him.
It really made me laugh when you both kept telling Harry to get up and protect Dumbledore. Dumbledore needs protection from nobody!😂

Dumbledore was actually protecting Harry throughout the fight as when they clashed spells, he who must not be named launched lightning bolts at Harry, and as the fight progressed, he also mentally lured Harry to stay close to the fight while launching big range attacks. Dumbledore had to split his concentration on countering the attacks and protecting Harry.

Umbridge is actually the most evil character in the entire franchise. Most people never meet a dark lord, but everyone meets an Umbridge in their life
Because Umbridge gets true pleasure out of her actions, the rest of them are simply sick and act out, she gets so much pleasure out of torturing people that she can literally form a patronus from it, thats some deep sickness right there.
I would say “most hateable.” I think Bellatrix is the most evil.

I love Helena’s voice and the way she played Bellatrix, she just makes her so insane, she’s just such an amazing actress.
the "I Killed Sirius Black! I Killed Sirius Black! lines from the next film are the best from her I think. They're so delightfully childish in their delivery, like a little girl singing a song to accompany a playground game, that they just make her seem all the more deranged.

@@branthall1787 She plays crazy like no one else. Have you seen the movie she played in called 55 Steps? it's based on a true story about a woman who is mentally ill that sues the hospital she was in...and it's REALLY GOOD!! She was also married to Tim Burton for about 13 years.

Basic storytelling rules dictates a showdown between the main character and the main villain in the climax of any story. So I’ll allow the comment.
Imelda Staunton did an amazing job playing a character who was more hated than the story's main villain. The fact that Umbridge was more hated than Voldemort himself makes the scene where she gets carried away like firewood by the centaurs that much more satisfying. Also, when I first saw Hagrid's half-brother Grawp, he really looked like Alfred E. Neuman, the cartoon kid on the cover of MAD Magazine.

Umbridge resonates so much with people because in a world of fantasy creatures and people with magic powers, she’s a realistic kind of evil that you encounter all the time in real life.

I think the Dumbledore v Voldemort scene in the book was way more entertaining; it gave us more of a sense that Dumbledore was always the one that Voldemort feared. heck, the chapter was called, "The Only One He Ever Feared". Dumbledore just walked through the fight all casual, while Voldemort was panicking, throwing spells at him... so awesome. And Snape is the most complex character in the whole series.

@@OEx25 unfortunately true… they made him much angrier and “loud” lol. Compared to the books where he was subdued, but you could tell he always had the upper hand, he just yells so often 😂. And when Dumbledore is angry in the books, you know something is WRONG, when in the movies if Dumbledore is angry it’s a normal Tuesday
Snaps is like me wants to learn good and bad spells for certain situations but on the inside he’s always good but outside he’s bad….plus how the ending goes is really a eye opener to snape whole personality

The terrible thing about Bellatrix trying to kill Tonks and successfully killing Sirius is the fact that they were direct family. Bellatrix and Sirius were cousins, while Tonks is Bellatrix's niece. One of the reasons the ending of this movie/book is so important is because Harry's friends are forced to confront the reality of Harry's life. They can no longer hide from the difficulties of Harry's life.

Yup she hate Nymphadora beacuse her mother (Bellatrix sister) Andromeda married muggle-born Ted Tonks (btw he died during second wizarding world, snatchers killed him) and Bellatrix like the rest of her family prejudiced pure-blood supremacist family.
Can't recall in the book, but in the movie she very clearly kills Sirius on purpose...
I always felt like they should've had a scene in DH1 with HBC as Andromeda Tonks.

Dumbledore leaving with the Phoenix, stating he’s not going quietly is my favorite part of this film. He’s got style. 😂
The completely ruined the scene in the book in which Dumbledore takes everyone down in a matter of seconds and then escapes.
They should have just filmed that scene word for word from the book

Kingsley is a member of the Order, and in the movies he doesn't get much time to shine, because adaptations cut a lot of material.
Giving him the *winning* line gave him something more to do, made him look likeable, made it clear he was one of the good guys despite being there with the team that was arresting Dumbledore (remember, movie only fans haven't seen much of him and might be confused), and makes the line much more meaningful if delivered by a character that has agency and an amount of relevancy, rather than someone who is literally background scenery.
For all those reasons, giving him the line was an *EXCELLENT* choice.

I loved how Mrs. Figg was used in the books. She was mentioned in the first book as a neighbor who babysat Harry. Not until book 4 did we find out she is a squib, a non-magical person born to a magical family. Dumbledore placed her there to secretly watch out over Harry.

I like it, but it also kind of ruined Dumbledor for me. There is absolutely no way he didn't know about how Harry's family treated him

The magical protection of Harry's mother, to continue to work, Harry have to pass some weeks-month per year in the house of his mother's family. (Her sister for exemple, like Petunia).
Book 5 right
when you talked about how the Snape flashback scene really messed you up, you just gotta know it did the same for Harry too. In the books, it gives him a kind of identity crisis. After all these years of hearing about how incredible his father was and believing the best in him and thinking Snape is a liar, he gets a glimpse into what actually happened. Harry actually starts to think that his mother was tricked into marrying him because who would want to marry a bully like that? It really troubles him for a long time until he’s able to talk to Sirius and Lupin and get a little more insight into why he was like that and that it wasnt really all as bad as a seems. Regardless, its an important lesson in multiple ways: not all good people are always good and that you can grow and change!
I thibk it was just as bad as it seemed. James and Sirus were horrible bullies and Lupin had a soft spot for them. They were however incredibly kid and protective of those they loved. James and Sirus didn't chabge that much in my opinion but just started showing more of their caring side. James was still mean behind Lily's back and Sirus curelty to Kreacher led to his downfall
Hermione is much more vicious in the books. When the students were signing their names for Dumbledor’s Army, Hermione jinxed the paper so that if anyone snitched, boils and blisters would form on their face spelling out the word “snitch”.
She jinxed the quill, not the paper. And in the books it wasnt Cho that gave them up, it was her best friend.
Plus it wasn't Cho, but it was the friend, Cho brought to the initial meeting.
No she jinxed the paper. She says “I put a jinx on the piece of parchment we all signed.”
That's bad ass haha I can't wait to read the rest of the books
Not to mention that because someone was gossiping about her, she kidnapped and trapped a women in a jar and put an unbreakable spell on the jar so that she can't escape and if she tries to turn back into human she would just die. Don't mess with Hermione ig.
Keep in mind that Dumbeldore is the most powerful wizard alive, possibly ever. There's a reason Voldemort is afraid of him. As Hermoine said way back in the first movies, so long as Dumbledore is alive, Harry can't be touched.
He sure poked Harry at the graveyard... even said "I can touch you now" lol. But jokes aside, yeah getting through Dumbledore aint easy.
The only one that could have been a rival to Dumbledor is Merlin. But they lived in completely different times.
iirc when Dumbledore and Grindelwald fought, Grindelwald already had the Elder Wand... Dumbledore literally beat the man with the "unbeatable wand" in a fight.
@@drayman101 the elder wand really isn't *that* special. It's powers are exaggerated through legend and word of mouth. Skill-wise, Grindelwald is very close to Dumbledore.

Not sure if you caught it, but the assistant to the Minister of Magic was Ron's older brother, Percey (from the first movie). In the books, it is a major subplot how his parents are both furious and so disappointed that he has sided with the Ministry of Magic.

The backstory of Argus Filch (grumpy groundskeeper with the cat) is that he is a squibb... a person born into a wizarding family who has little or no magical powers. He is both angry and jealous of the students who treat him with a constant level of disrespect. Side note... Arabella Figg, the funny little lady who testified about the dementors near Harry's home, is also a squibb. She was asked to live near Harry in order to keep a lookout for him as he grew up.
Evanna Lynch played Luna. She was a mega fan of the books and never acted before. My favorite quote from her in a interview was when she said "The movies gave people permission to accept parts of themselves. So it was quite liberating to see your ODDNESS as a SUPERPOWER represented on screen."
Luna was one of my favorite characters. A true Ravenclaw and the wisest among the group. Also the humblest.

Evanna Lynch played this character perfectly as a wise and almost innocent person. So sweet. I really like when she meets Dobby.

I was never into Harry Potter and had no intetest until I became a father. My wife read the books already and insisted that I read them to our son. She said once we started I would get hooked and I scoffed 😂 So when my boy turned 6 we (including grandma on Facetime lol) started reading Harry Potter before bed every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday and it became a routine that we all looked forward to and I had to admit the further we got into the series the more we all got hooked. It took us two years to finish the whole series and we made a pact that every time we finished a book then we could watch the movie which got difficult for my kid because some of the books were long 😂 When we finished all the books it was bittersweet for all of us because we had all gotten used to being excited for the next book. My boy was so sad and was of reading age by the time we finished he started reading the whole series over again.
This is the sweetest thing I ever heard! ❤ As a 4th grade teacher back in the day when the books/movies were being released I so so much joy come from them. Families reading together, students that were reluctant readers or had reading issues found reading a joy with HP books! It is truly magical 🧙♀️ & addicting in the best way. I re-read the series at least twice a year, just to enjoy them again and again.
I'm in my mid-60s and have read the series at least five times.
We did the same with our boys. Read a book, then watch the corresponding movie.
When Harry Potter saw Snape's memory of his father James bullying him viciously w/ Lupin and Sirius at Hogwarts, it changed his view of everyone calling his father a 'great wizard'... Harry was also viciously bullied as a child by his cousin Dudley and his family.
In the books, Harry also saw his mom Lily yelling at James, telling him to back off Snape... and Snape insulted her, calling her 'mudblood', and Lily stormed off... Harry wondered how his mom Lily got together w/ James when it seemed she couldn't stand him in school.
Harry then asked Lupin and Sirius what happened, and they both admitted that they were juvenile and often misbehaved as kids... James and Snape disliked each other instantly in Hogwarts... It didn't help that James was a Gryffindor and Snape was a Slytherin... and the 2 houses were always at odds w/ each other. Snape was not popular, and that made him a target of the jocks... which included James & his friends. In turn, Snape would always try to hex James at every opportunity... and that was why Snape was so antagonistic towards Harry Potter - he reminded him too much of the torment that his father inflicted on him.
Harry asked how his mom Lily married his father James when she disliked him at Hogwarts... and Sirius and Lupin told him that James had a huge crush on Lily in school, and she was the only girl who didn't fancy him... So, he would try get Lily's attention and often make a fool of himself by doing stupid things, and often got into trouble. What Harry saw in Snape's mind happened during that time...
Sirius said that James Potter eventually grew out of his juvenile behavior in his final year at Hogwarts and made a proper effort to win over Lily... They started dating just before they graduated Hogwarts and eventually got married.
I absolutely LOVE Molly Weasley. I’ve started reading the books (still on book 1) and it makes me love her even more. I think the fact that she doesn’t see Harry as “the boy who lived” but rather as a child who’s lost so much and then had to be brought up in a abusive home speaks volume to her character. She’s that one family friend who takes in whoever needs something and wants to make sure Harry truly has a family that loves him (her family). She’s just great 😊
The Weasleys are the family we all wish we'd habe, and Molly the mum to match.
Just a couple comments. They don't say it in the movies, but it was Umbridge that sent the Dementors after Harry in the beginning. Also, in the books, the match between Dumbledore and Voldermort in the books is way cooler, and there is no question that Voldermort really doesn't stand a chance against Dumbledore. In the books Dumbledore isn't even putting in a full effort. He is just there to delay Voldermort until the Ministry arrives, and sees that Voldermort is indeed back.

If not for the thing I wont say, Dumbledore would wipe the floor with Voldemort.
I was just gonna comment about them not mentioning Dolores sending the Dementors in the movies but I had to check if someone already said it in the comments first, which you obviously did.

I am in love with Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange. She nailed the crazy psycho personality and the cackle, I love her cackle so much.
Her Bellatrix LeStrange is in my top 5 favourite villains. The cackle is just the icing on the whole batty cake.
She was a perfect casting choice for the role. She has spent her career mastering the dark and twisted/insane character to the point she's pretty much type cast in those roles. But considering it's her favorite type of role to play, she doesn't have a problem with it. Probably why she was married to Tim Burton for over 10 years in the first place and why he uses her so often in his films. No one else does that particular flavor of character quite as well as she does.
without spoilers, I'll just say that I adore the work she does in Deathly Hallows.. iykyk
In the book, Fred and George caused *waaaaaay* more havoc for Dolores Umbridge when they left Hogwarts. They set off their entire stock of Wildfire Whiz-bangs all through Hogwarts. Turned the area outside Umbridges' office into a swamp that she couldn't remove. They asked Peeves the resident poltergeist ghost (not seen in the films) to 'give her hell' and play pranks on her. Students would set off Dungbombs and Stink Pellets near her and eat sweets from the Weasleys' Skiving Snackboxes to pretend to be ill during her classes.
Yes, it's a shame we didn't get Peeves. Peeves was awesome!
Peeves does appear in one scene in the first film(I believe), but isn't directly named.
In the scene we get to see a little bit of Snapes background, And Harry realizes his father would bully Snape, I think he actually felt really bad and wanted to say something, maybe even apologize. But Snape wouldn’t allow it, I think he was embarrassed that the son of his worst enemy saw into his mind.
But in the end while Umbride Was questioning him, Harry trusted Snape and gave him the message about Sirius being in danger. And Snape came through, gave the message to the order of the Phoenix. That’s why Sirius and the others showed up to fight the bad guys at the end of the movie.
Me and my husband watched this one last night and kept commenting on how much y'all were gonna despise Umbridge. I remember her being even more vile in the book believe it or not. Haven't watched y'all watch it yet, waiting on hubby to get home. I texted him "Wanna watch Jay and Amber hate on some Umbridge tonight?" He gave me a smile and a thumbs up. 😄 Excited to watch!

Luna is possibly my favorite character in the HP series, outside the big 3. She appears so spacy on the surface, but underneath she has tremendous wisdom, coupled with a tremendous capacity for understanding, kindness, and forgiveness. She might not know where her shoes are, she might exasperate others with talk about gnargles and wrackspurts, but she sees the truth when others are lost. Luna quietly and consistently does the moral and ethical thing without self promotion. She knows who she is, and is comfortable in her own skin, so she doesn't need outside validation.
To be fair, Longbottom is a great character, too. But, I love the Luna character.
The casting of Evanna Lynch as Luna was inspired. She is perfect, exactly how I pictured Luna when I read the books.

Luna was the best character in this movie. A unique and quirky girl that lives how she feels, and really helped Harry see things in a new perspective later.

Sirius' death works well cinematically, but to me personally it was more heartbreaking in the book. The fact that he was hit by an unnamed curse (not killing curse) and 'simply' fell behind the veil. Harry (and I did too) was expecting him to come back through and wanted to go after him. He was my favorite character. I read the fifth book in one day as I couldn't put it down. I remember it being 3 am and I had tears streaming down my face thinking 'she'll bring him back right??' Having to wait until she finished the next book was torture.
I love the films and they did a great job, but I will never get over how little they developed Harry's relationship with Sirius and didnt really show his good qualities. The movies made the magic come alive on screen, but didn't do as good a job with the relationships.
Your last sentence is probably one of the best I've ever read about the movies. Couldn't have said it better!
You know I re-read the book recently and honestly, they did a stunning job with the character Dolores Umbridge, they did amazing by making her as unlikable as possible since in the book she's furiously hate-able
Imelda Staunton was amazing as Delores Umbridge. I have never hated a movie character as much as her with only Percy from The Green Mile coming anywhere close.
Yeah, this is probably my favorite book of the series. I was looking forward to the movie, and liked it as well, but this one is my favorite book cause the characters were, imo, at their best here. Dealing with the fallout of GoF, Umbridge, the Ministry, how Harry felt so distant from his friends and how they all came together and tried to let him know he was there, his anger, etc. The film and actors did a great job capturing a lot of it, but sadly because of timing just couldn’t get it all.
Absolutely ! She's way worse in the book, and I can't ever recall wanting such severe harm to come to a fictional character every single time she was just mentioned on a page as Professor Umbitch.

The book & the actress made me *HATE* Umbridge!! Starkid made me *LOVE* Umbridge 😅
I'm sure these are mentioned in the comments somewhere but I'll mention two things:
1) In the books, Harry couldn't help Dumbledore in the fight at the end I believe because Dumbledore cast a spell to keep Harry protected and stuck where he was. So with every complex spell Dumbledore is casting, he's simultaneously controlling Harry's movements.
2) The Weasley twins full-on left school when they pulled their stunt, so it didn't matter if they were formally expelled or not. In the books, they'd spread their havoc throughout the school and did things like create a giant swamp in one of the hallways. It took the professors weeks to get everything cleaned up, and Professor Flitwick wound up saving and cordoning off a small section of the swamp because he thought it was such an impressive piece of magic. (The Weasley twins are my favorites.)

It was even better than that: the professors could've cleaned up with a few flicks of their wand, but they all played dumb just to screw with Umbridge.
It's a real testament to how much everyone in that school hated her.
As i recall Dumbledore enchanted a statute that moved and stood in front Harry. Harry was trying to get around the statue but it would not let him as if the statute was basketball player constantly keeping him boxed him out, lol.
I would have loved to see the swamp and all the teachers pretending not to be able to get rid of it.... I love the twins so much.
Two of the many reasons the book is better in this case. On the other hand, if they tried to include all the main points, the movie would have been 4 hours long.
The scene were they are all flying on the Thestrals (invisible horses) is actually quiet funny in the books given they couldn’t see them and were TERRIFIED😂. The others asked how they would get on and Luna helped them and rapped their hands around the creatures manes. Harry even wonders how they must feel soaring in the air with nothing under them. it is kinda a shame they didn’t add a LITTLE something to acknowledge that the others were scared out of their wits🫤

@@jinphany. of course it is not NEEDED but people like this couple who have never seen the movies or read the books leaves it a bit confusing that they say they can’t see them but don’t acknowledge that when they are literally flying on them😬 I at least wish they put in Ron yelling “this is bizarre!” While flying, he says that in the books and it would have just added a bit of clarity for the viewers

One of my favourite tid bits about this book is that after dudley is attacked by the dementors and gets all his happiness sucked out, he sees all the bullying and pain he caused harry and others, as he never had a bad thing happen to him in his life. And so from this point on in the books he tries to be friendly to harry
The way Harry overcomes Voldemort while being possessed moves me to tears every time.
That's the one scene I thought the movie did better than the books.

Snape is a Rollercoaster of a character, but he is my favorite. He just keeps getting better with movies. Alan Rickman (R.I.P), who plays Snape did an amazing job. Love you reaction. Time to do movie 6
The way these two go back and forth about whether Snape is a bad guy or good guy by his actions had me laughing. Then I thought wait til next movie... then wait til the next movie.... then wait til the last.... [no spoilers]
I feel the same way. He did a phenomenal job with this character. I also loved him in Love Actually. ✌️♥️
Rickman's portrayal is an absolute joy. The entire franchise was lucky to get him and keep him for the length of the project.
Having said that... Rickman's charisma leaks through and gives Snape more likability than the character probably should have. The book Snape is an absolutely undeniable jerk. Petty. Cruel. Rough edges that get sanded off by Rickman's force of presence on the screen.
But I wouldn't have it any other way.

Alan Rickman made him sympathetic. In the books he comes off as a stalker and creep.
Something important to note on Luna’s character is that she is heavily bullied in the books. She is called “Loony Lovegood” because of how weird she is. When we first meet Luna in the movie, Hermione accidentally calls her that on accident when introducing her to Harry and Ron (ironic since Hermione in the books was very against Luna’s bullying). Since Luna’s bullying isn’t mentioned in the movie, it’s good to note they allude to it with her things that are disappearing (shoes, and other trinkets) because in the books they were stolen from her as a form of bullying. Luna (being so kind and thinking the best of everyone) blames this on these mythical creatures that no one can see called “Nargles”.
hmm i though Hermione was also making fun of luna but Ginny was the one that was really sweet with Luna and helped her with her bullies??
Hermione definitely doesn't bully Luna at all! She is, however, irritated with Luna's alternative beliefs, which is fair haha. Hermione is a very rational and fact-based person so I can understand their friction.
I love this movie. There are, however, two scenes from the book I wish they would have included. The first is after the events at the Ministry. Harry is so angry that he trashes Dumbledore's office in a rage. The two then finally have a talk. The reader discovers that Neville could have been the chosen one from the prophecy, as he was also born at the end of July. Voldemort chose Harry as the potential future threat. His choice meant that Harry became the chosen one referred to in the prophecy. Dumbledore also goes into detail about why he kept Harry in the dark. He had seen Harry struggle with so much that he couldn't bring himself to add to his burdens. He kept thinking he could fill Harry in later. There was time. Dumbledore admits there was a flaw in his plan. He never planned to actually love Harry. And that caused him to make mistakes. The other scene was at the Burrow when Arthur was recovering. Harry had been silent about his fears that Voldemort was controlling him. Once it finally comes out, Ginny points out that Harry was dumb to not talk to her since she's the only other person he knows that's been controlled by Voldemort. He does feel bad for not thinking about that. It's a small scene, but it has a heavy impact.
Truly, I wish they had the Dumbledore's office scene. I can just hear Michael Gambon saying "By all means continue destroying my possessions. I daresay I have too many."

Just so you know, in the book, it was not Cho who snitched on Dumbledore's Army. It was her friend, Marietta, and no one used truth serum on her. She told because her mother worked for the ministry, and she had to be in good with Umbridge. They made it Cho in the movie to save time, but I was glad they put in that Umbridge used the truth serum on her so we get why she did it.
Even at 114 years old, Dumbledore is the most powerful wizard in the world.
Dumbledore is probably the greatest living wizard of this time. The chapter of the book where he fights Voldemort is called "The only one he ever feared". Dumbledore was a teacher at Hogwarts when Tom Riddle attended and was the only person there who saw through his veneer as the model, star student. Tom always resented this about him. Dumbledore was the wizard that defeated the last major dark wizard to threaten the world, Gellert Grindelwald, back in the 40's.
In the book, they explained that Mrs. Figg, who came to the bridge after hairy get rid of the dementors was a squib. Squibs are people who were born to wizard families, but have no powers of their own. Filch, the Hogwarts caretaker is a squib. Those are the only two I think they introduce in the movies. However, in the movies, they never tell you that Mrs. Figg is a squib, but it explains how she was able to see the dementors.
So how could Dudley see them or could he not see them? Genuine question

It's also not mentioned in the films that Mrs Figg was watching over Harry, and used to look after him if the Dursleys wanted to go somewhere without Harry. And she was also in communication with Dumbledore.
She couldn't see them in the book though, she just pretended to! The Ministry had no idea if squibs could see dementors or not and she reassured them that they could, but she messed up later when she said that the dementors "walked" towards the two boys, instead of "glided." Plus, she described them with the same exact words their textbook did, so Harry figured that Dumbledore just had her memorize it! lol
'Mrs. Figg' is portrayed by the wonderful Kathryn Hunter. She also knocked it outta the park playing 'Eedy Karn' in STAR WARS: ANDOR. 🏆
Yea the movie didn't go in detail the way the book does, but that great fireworks scene was Fred & George choosing to drop out of school that way, I've loved it since the book!
Yup, Harry had given them his winnings from the tournament and they knew it was time to start their store, its why they were testing their products at school, they were almost perfected.

For some reason, the movie left out the fact that it was Umbridge that sent the dementors after Harry to shut him up.
Professor Trelawney is probably the most important character in the entire series because of one thing: She’s the one who foretold the prophecy between Harry and Voldemort. If it weren’t for her, The Boy Who Lived wouldn’t exist, the Ministry would lose and Voldemort and his Death Eaters would’ve already won the war and conquest. She unknowingly gave the entire Wizarding World a miracle.
And she is brilliantly play by the amazing Emma Thompson! My absolute favorite actress of all time. I was so thrilled when I saw that she was in the series.
Also her mother was a renown prophetess. She just didn’t inherit that much of it. Just enough to be a conduit. The first prophecy is why Dumbledore hired her. She had it during the interview

I remember reading comments from other reactions saying that Trelawney doesn't really see the future but Dumbledore allowed her to teach anyway for some reason. Hence, Hermione has a low opinion of Divination.

As good as the movie does with their exit though, the books do it so much better, with everyone getting ‘sick’ with their illness candies, and the fireworks going crazy for days after and the other teachers refusing to help because ‘it was outside the purview of their designated subject’ - one of Delores rules.
I like how they did the Weasley twins' grand exit, but in the book they didn't just do it for fun; they did it as a distraction so Harry could get into Umbridge's office to try to contact Sirius. It bugged me a lot that the movie messed up the timing so it seemed like just mischief instead of the twins' really making a sacrifice to help Harry.
I can't wait to say what else I hated they cut out that leads up to the next movie.

In the books Dumbledore didn't just hold his own against Voldemort, he walked through him while at the same time casually restraining Bellatrix after he just took down about half a dozen Death-Eaters. In the books Voldemort posessed Harry because he knew he had no chance of beating Dumbledore in a straight-up duel.
There were many ways in which Harry Potter influenced my life but one of the biggest things is that it showed me that people like Umbridge are evil and it's okay to stand up to them. I thought I was crazy because I had abusive narcissistic relative who even looks a little like Umbridge but my issues with her were always ignored by other adults or I was told to quietly take her abuse. Obsessed with control, able to say the most mean and cruel things with a crazy smile, unable to ever see that anything they do is bad. Notice how she calls teenagers "children" and keeps them helpless. This is a classic narcissistic behavior - infantilizing their victims and keeping them away from knowledge and skills which could help them break free from narcissist's control. Thanks to this 5th book, I felt validated in my feelings towards my abuser and started standing up to her until at some point in life, I cut her off completely. My life has been much better ever since. I'm forever thankful to Rowling for teaching a generation of children how to spot these monsters.
I took one of those "What Hogwarts professor are you?" quizzes and got Umbridge. I legit had to sit down and think about my life choices.

I love this one for so many different reasons, and one of them is that this is the first time we really get to see Dumbledore in action. Throughout the series, we always hear about Dumbledore being "the only one [Voldemort] ever feared" but this is the first time we get to see that interaction and see Dumbledore being a badass
its a very good tool in stories. The really big shots arent showing off. They only just get mentioned how powerful they are by others. So that when the time comes for these characters to fight, everyone is like. Oh my gosh this is soo coool
One thing the movie neglects to mention is that Umbridge was actually the one who sent the Dementors after Harry.
The cool thing about Dudley (his actor) is that he's grown up to be a pretty prolific actor. For anyone who hasn't, should definitely check him out in The Pale Blue Eye, his performance as Edgar Allen Poe is amazing! He did a great job acting next to Christian Bale.

From the 1st to the last, every Harry Potter book has grown a darker more real world tone as the kids grow up and harry learns more truth about what happen. How voldemort became powerful, why he and his parents were targeted, and his future.
A deleted scenes I wish they added was the Neville parents in the hospital and how he could have been in Harry's place.
Yes, they didn't mention the prophesy could have referred to Neville. Voldemort decided the Potters were the more likely foes so he went after them, trying to kill Harry. When he did that and the curse backfired, Harry was left with his scar "marking" him as his enemy and fulfilling the prophecy. Voldemort could just as well have chosen Neville. Instead, his parents are tortured into insanity and are confined to a wizard's hospital.
@@kristiedale3393 agreed. Once the prophecy is revealed, the game of secrets is done, and the last two books are about deeds. A fitting end, as the readers/audience now are ready to join the war.
No matter how often I watch this movie, every time I hear Mrs Weasley respond to "He's not your son" with "He's as good as", my eyes water up. ❤

Yay! Made my night to see you do this. The blacks house elf is really a sad story that is explained better in the book. This film is brilliant but skims past so many wonderful stories that happen in the books. Luna is my favourite. Shes probably the most emotional well balanced of the lot.
Kreacher becomes a good story by the end, but its skipped entirely in the movies.
Yeah, I’d happily have stayed for a longer movie if they could’ve put a little bit more in. It’s such a huge book, I’m sure it was super hard deciding what to cut.

I remember years ago realizing this movie is the shortest of them all, based on the longest book of them all. It's probably the one that I've forgotten the most parts of (since the movies don't remind me). Opposite to the next book which for some reason has a harder hold on my "memory bank", even though there are nearly as many parts cut.
The actress who played Luna was battling anorexia.. Rowling told her if she got help and started eating she would cast her in the movie and the actress got help and Rowling kept her word ..

When Daniel screams as Harry after Sirus dies, the screams were so heartbreaking, Emma and Helena were crying. It was so heart wrenching. So they muted his scream for the movie.

It was because his screams were real. Daniel had just found out his grandma died and was really letting it out.
I think it's his best acting of the whole series. Those handful of images of him realizing and starting to cry and scream always break my heart and make me tear up.
I always hated that reasoning. Im pretty sure Danielle said that never happened tho, but if it was true i never understood not just using the scream. Felt that wouldve made the scene that much more devastating.
When I first met Luna, like most people, I found her strange and off putting but the more I knew her the more I loved her character. She's so delightfully unfiltered and quirky.
She's even better in the books, one of most peoples favorite characters. The actress got her so well too.
@user-jx5ng1rm2z I hear Rowling wrote the character for the actress. She'd written a letter telling of her depression and "bad thoughts" and how the books helped her. Rowling met her and was inspired to write Luna. Later they offered her the part in the movie.
I always lived her character and thought her and Harry were a good couple. Two damaged kids who would support and help each other.

Luna is a textbook Aquarius Ravenclaw. Original, quirky, hears n dances to her own beat, insatiably curious, and highly underestimated. I loved Luna Neville The Weasleys McGonnagal and Lupin from the beginning! I even despised Lucius (Jason Isaac was STELLAR) and loved how complex and complicated Alan Rickman made Snape. And of course, tons of kudos to the incomparable Imelda Staunton for her role as Umbridge!!!!
@@sersastark Alan Rickman was the only one, besides Rowling herself, that knew Snape's secret and had to push back against the various directors and hold his ground on why he played certain scenes the way he did without revealing the twist.

I remember reading Sirius going through the veil at the end of a long road trip and not wanting to get out of the car until I finished the chapter. Just so tragic for all of us who wanted a better life for Harry. My only criticism of this film has always been that Snape’s memory was always my favorite part in the book and I felt the scene in the movie didn’t do it justice. It’s such a great moment and I wish they’d done it in full. James may have bullied him, but Snape also wasn’t great. And he takes James’s actions out on a child which I’ll never forgive.
It probably didn't help matters that Harry looked eerily like James except for his eyes. I hate the way Snape treated him (and he is straight-up ugly about it in the books; they really toned him down for the films) but at the same time I think he kept feeling triggered every time he looked at Harry. He almost literally could not see Harry standing there, his brain kept going "omg that's James, I hate James." Trauma is not rational. It wasn't just James picking on him. It was James being the reason Snape suffered another loss. I won't get into that here because it's a huge spoiler.
Hagrid's dog is a Neapolitan Mastiff. These are huge beautiful dogs. I've only seen one in real life but it was awesome.
I have paused this at the beginning to write and tell you that yes, we are all absolutely excited to see you continue down this path.
This series of films matures as it goes, and your reactions are a wonderful form of vicarious fun... we get to experience it again with you like we did when we saw it in theaters...

This is one of the best book to movie adaptations of the series. And James wasn’t bad, he was just an idiot as a teenager. Sirius and Lupin tell Harry that in the books. They don’t make excuses, they just say he got better as he grew up.
They also left out the fact that Snape’s overall attitude and fascination with the dark arts alienated James and everyone else.
I think this is really important to know, and it's one of the mistakes the movies made by not explaining it better.
James Potter also came from a pureblood family and had a bit of that arrogance that most of the pure-bloods had. It wasn't on purpose, he'd just had a pretty privileged life and it colored how he behaved toward everyone. Lily set him straight. Which wasn't her job, mind you, it just fell out that way.
@Blake N I think Snape was accepted by the “dark arts” group because essentially he believed what they did:that muggles were inferior. Look at how he treated Petunia as a child. His biggest problem was that he was somewhat of a reverse snob. He also hated pure bloods because they had things he didn’t. He was incredibly bitter, even as a child. He hated everyone, except for one person, but I think part of him still looked down on her.
I just don’t look at Snape the way some do. He may have done some heroic things but he was a horrible person. The movies left out most of the horrible way he treated students.
This is my favorite movie, for sure, and quite possibly my favorite book as well for one specific reason: The Weasley Twins are my favorite characters of the entire series and their glorious exit from the school as well as the incredible pranks they pull throughout the book against Umbridge were fantastic.
Fred and George are the best, bar none.

Notice how Voldemort holds his wand... almost like an afterthought. The others hold them with a firm grip, while Voldemort just kind of lays it in his hand without gripping it. Just something that always catches my eye.

I feel like Voldemort holding his wand like that shows arrogance. He believes himself to be untouchable and I think Ralph depicted that very well with that gesture.
Dumbledor is one of the greatest wizards and dualists of all time. And the only one voldemort ever feared. He is perhaps even more gifted at mind reading than Voldemort and was able to see through him as a child. He famously beat another great dark wizard a few decades before in what was said to be the greatest magical dual of all time. He is every bit Voldemorts match. True GOAT. Part of the reason fudge feared him is because many thought he'd one day be minister for magic, but chose to become a teacher instead. Partly to control his own ego. He wasn't always a gentle wise old man. He was veracious and egotistical to a degree in his prime.
Great reaction! The curse done on Neville's parents was a cruciatus curse (pronounced CREW-SHE-OTT-ISS).

harry’s scream after sirius dies gives me chills everytime. you can’t even hear it but it’s one of the most heartbreaking scenes
They don’t explain it too well in the movies but the reason everyone is scared to say Voldermort is because when Voldemort was in power the first time, Voldemort casts a curse that alerts his Death Eaters and other henchpeople whenever his name is spoken. This curse is known as the Taboo and they come to kill them right away
So they came up with, “he who must not be named”
Also, remember Hermoine lamenting, “fear of a name only increases fear of the thing itself” which is probably another reason voldermort wanted his name to be feared
Which sadly, Hermione never should have said this in the movies, she was TERRIFIED of him in the books. Took forever for her to even be willing to say the name.

Yeah, there's a scene, I won't spoil it as it's in a future movie, where they show the curse, but don't explain it. Someone mentions his name in passing, and a minute later they're being attacked. I was puzzled by that scene until I heard the explanation you gave.
Thankfully, I have a friend who has not just read the books, but really got into them and loves them, knows so much of the lore. I've just seen the movies, so when I ask questions like "why don't they just use the killing curse in every fight", he actually explained it to me. Woot.
@@elizabitty213 Actually throughout most of the books Hermione isnt remotely brave at all. She earns her bravery. Which was her growth in the books. She has no growth in the movies because shes "perfect" from the very first.
Remember when Harry got on the Knight Bus in the 3rd movie, and asked if the muggles can see them? Shunkpike said “muggles? They don’t see nothing do they?” So when they’re flying down the river on broomsticks the muggles aren’t paying enough attention to see them
Yeah, but that is just in the movie. They shot it that way just to make it look cool. In the book they fly high and actively avoid being seen by muggles.
I believe that in the book they use an Illusion spell, it's been a while since I read it.
@@punk4gun Yes, they did. The spell acted like camoflage so they'd blend with their surroundings. They also flew at night, and very high up to avoid being spotted by muggles.
The prophecy in this movie was made by Trelawny, when she was doing an interview for a position as teacher at hogwarts. Part of it was overheard by a certain death eater and conveyed to Lord Voldemort. It speaks of a threat to 'the dark lord' and describes a boy being born at the end of July and with parents that defied the Dark Lord 3 times. Lord Voldemort assumes it is the Potters and decides to kill them. What is not touched upon in the movies however is that there were 2 possible families that fit the description in the prediction. The Potters and the Longbottoms. In other words it could have been Harry or Neville who was the threat to the Dark Lord. But by choosing the Potters he marked Harry as his equal.
i cry every time during sirius's death, specifically at the muted scream. i can't believe daniel's scream was so heart wrenching they had to mute it. i can absolutely understand why emma watson and i believe helena bonham carter cried hearing that scream

When this book came out(Order of the Phoenix), I sat down to read a bit around 8p.m. I read straight thru the night and finished the book around 6a.m. the next morning. I could not put it down, it was sooo good!

-Harry and the Order vs the Death Eaters
-Dumbledore’s exit via Faux the Phoenix
-Training class with Prof. Harry Potter etc.
Amazing, as this is my 2nd least favourite movie because it butchers all those things you mentioned above, all those things are much better in the novels. And it;s clear that Jk is much better at writing action sequences than the screenwriters were.

If you want to be reminded of how truly amazing an actor Gary Oldman is go to the look he gives Harry as he’s dying and passing through the arch. If it didn’t mean having to watch Sirius dying I’d watch over and over. It encompasses everything. I think Sirius was ready to die anytime those 14 years but he’s sad to leave Harry, sorry he won’t be there to protect Harry and make a family with him, and loves Harry so very much. Plus a little wry ‘can you believe this?’ Love, sorrow, regret and humor in seconds. That man is a freaking genius. I can’t help myself, I’m going to watch it again.
One of my favorite passages from the series was altered for the movie. After saving Dudley, he had to read the letters from the ministry about his expulsion. Later, as he's trying to set out on his own, he threatens his uncle with his wand. Vernon says he knows Harry can't use magic "outside that madhouse you call a school!, and he replies "The madhouse has chucked me out. So I can do what I like."

I don't know if you read to your kids at bedtime, but I read the Harry Potter series to my kids, and they loved it. There is so much more depth to the books than the movies can do justice.

The 1st time I read the book it took me FOREVER to get through it because it was sooo frustrating! Nothing went Harry's way, there just seemed like there was no hope. It really gave a fascinating perspective on how negative things can impact our psyche.
if you watch the show The Queen's Gambit, you can see the actor who played Dudley all grown up. i didn't even recognize him and had to look up the cast to see why he seemed familiar. anyway yeah, been looking forward to you guys continuing the HP series. 🥰

His performance in the Coen Brothers 'Ballard of Buster Scruggs' is absolutely gut wrenching. Hes an incredibly talented actor.
Notice how all the kids were using "stupify" to fight and the others using real curses. The innocence changed when Sirius was killed and Harry went after Bellatrix with the unforgivable curse "Crucio". Marks a complete change in how they now see the world and the realization they must actually kill to win this fight
What people forget or just don't know. Is that Dumbledore was a Transfiguration professor. The man is experienced with all forms of magic
The only thing in the book that I wish they could have included in the movie was Fred and George turning one of the hallways into a swamp before dropping out of school and Umbridge being completely unable to remove it 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The duel between Dumbledore and Voldemort plays out a little different in the books (it's better, you get to see some of Dumbledore's creativity) - plus, Dumbledore is absolutely winning the fight, which is why Voldemort resorts to the dirty tactics by possessing Harry. It might sound weird that he would straight up be beating the big bad guy at this point but well - keep watching LOL. Glad you guys are enjoying this series!
You don't get to see anything, you get to read it though, then you close your eyes and try to imagine it but then it dawns on you that it's nowhere as good as the movies
This is one of my favorites of the HP films, but I do prefer the ministry fight in the books.

I have read prolifically and detested the Umbridge character so much I could barely finish the book the first time I read it. The revulsion I felt I have never felt for any other character, ever! She is so well written! You really should read the books to your kids when they are a bit older, my kids (32, 30 and 25 ) consider Harry Potter one of the best parts of their childhood …… my eldest was 11 when she read the first book and 17 when the last book was released….. exactly Harry’s ages….
There's a whole chapter in the book dedicated to Harry's reaction to Snape's worst memory and a conversation he has with Remus and Sirius that sheds a lot more light on the situation. While the Marauders did treat Snape badly for several years, their relationship was more of a war than Snape's worst memory portrays. Not a particularly even war, granted. Snape wasn't popular. James was. But Snape was always trying to hex James when his back was turned too-and darker curses than James was wont to use. Sirius and Remus as adults admit in the book that when they were immature they behaved badly-James and Sirius got into fights; Remus didn't stop them even though he knew better. But James grew up and stopped engaging. Severus never did. Lily fell in love with James once he had grown up. Severus's choices saw him lose the one friend he did have and turned him into the bitter, lonely, angry man we see in Harry Potter's time at Hogwarts.
I've never been a Snape apologist. He terrorized Neville to the point he became Neville's worst fear. Nothing excuses that. No matter how much Harry physically resembled his father, nothing excuses his teacher treating him like his father's second coming instead of his own person and taking out all the anger of decades on a child. Whether he was a villain or a OotP veteran, he was NOT a good guy. (I can also say James Potter probably wasn't a universally good guy as a kid; though we know he was a very good friend.)
With the revelation that Snape was bullied, you have to remember we are seeing a single incident from Snape’s perspective. The books show that it was a mutual dislike and Snape gave every bit as good as he got. He never missed an opportunity to strike at the marauders and they would retaliate and the cycle just went on and on. So Snape was not necessarily completely innocent in the encounter that Harry witnessed.
Every reaction to this movie that I watch I always have to search the comments for this. The movie makes it a point to show it in a way that makes it look like Snape was bullied by James, which, as you said is not the truth. Unfortunately, because of how it's shown every single reactor thinks that Harry's father was a bully.
I think it's fair to say he was "innocent" at the beginning of that specific encounter. But the movie certain leaves a whole lot out.
What's interesting is the similarities between Harry, Snape, and Tom Riddle... because they all three have a lot of experiences in common, but the difference is what they do with those experiences, and the thing that keeps Harry apart from the other two is that instead of wading in bitterness or turning evi,l he keeps compassion and love in his heart... which is kind of impressive considering the way he grew up. That's his greatest strength, not all of the magickal stuff.
After watching several of these HP reactions, I gotta say that I'm still not a fan of how David Yates handled Sirius' death. Most reactors barely have enough time to process what just happened, let alone fully feel Harry's pain at that moment. And I can't believe that the franchise stuck w/ that same director to this day.

Not just James, Snape bullied lots of people, and the only person James bullied was Snape, James HATED the dark arts and anyone who stood by them, and Snape absolutely qualified.
