The Cruciatus curse is the torture curse. It bothered Neville so much because when he was a baby, his parents were tortured by the Cruciatus so badly that they lost their minds. They don't recognize Neville to this day. He was raised by his grandmother.
Oh shoot I thought they died. No wonder Lupin or Sirius said they suffered a fate worse than death, and its even more messed up that the Impostor Mad-Eye made him see it up close in class.
@@AkimboJV I know. And when Bellatrix taunted him in the Department of Mysteries by asking how Mum and Dad was. He said they were better now that they were going to be avenged. I think a lot of people miss that line in Order.
@AkimboJV even more messed up was that Barty Crouch Jr (the Moody imposter) was one of the four imprisoned for torturing Frank and Alice Longbottom. So he knew exactly who Neville was and what he was forcing him to see
I think the thing that's important to remember about Ron, it's much better fleshed out in the books, is that he has 5 older brothers that are all high achieving and successful (even the troublemaker twins still get good grades and are entrepreneurs already while still at school) and his best friend is the most famous wizard of the day. So he is constantly being overshadowed and he feels left to the side a lot of the time. Back in the first movie when he looks in the mirror he sees himself as quidditch captain and head boy, he wants to be his own person and have his own wins. So when Harry, yet again, is in the spotlight, he is understandably jealous. He doesn't handle it well, but it better explains his behavior.
@M B Yep, like in the first movie Ron helps Hermione escape the plant because she was freaking out. She knew what to do but couldn't put it into action without rons help. In the movies ron needs help
@@davidc. That scene was changed because the logic potion puzzle Hermione solves in the book was cut from the movie. So Devil's Snare needed to be the obstacle Hermione took the lead on (and won the points for).
I think it's one of the saddest things of all of HP is that Krum had no one important in his life or more valued to him than a girl he just met. All the people in his life saw him only as the seeker, not the young man.
The same can b said about Cedric they put his date from the yule ball also Cho, everyone always mentions that about Krum but the same can b said about Cedric cuz he had only jus asked Cho to the dance as well with no prior relationship which makes me believe that Krum did have people he cared for cuz if it was strictly about that they would of took Cedric's dad not Cho
Ehm, and what data you have access to to state that those people were "Most important in his life" at all! Victims were chosen by another people, most likely by judges, ministry of magic, and/or other officials, most likely from the pool of available people at the location. Do you really think goblet itself suddenly "spoke its wisdon" and everyone around immediately executed it? Those was circumstantial choice.
Yeah I disagree with this too. I think the judges just had to choose who to take from the pool of people already at Hogwarts, so for the students who came from other schools farther away (that didn't already have a sibling there), there would've been a smaller pool of people to choose from for this. Doesn't mean that was necessarily THE most important person in their lives.
Yeah, I wonder if Alan Rickman added that part, just as a touch to show Snape preparing another assault on Harry and Ron. Its like he took a twisted sort of delight in it.
Neville was so affected by the spell that Moody used on the spider because the spell, the Cruciatus Curse (which is a torture spell that causes immense pain), was used on his parents and they were tortured into insanity so they can't even recognize anyone or anything around them.
@@mirandadevries6396 iirc, we see Neville at Saint Mungo's hospital and there may be a passing mention that his parents are there. Or it might be a deleted scene. It's been a while since I watched the films.
Richard Harris (Dumbledore in 1& 2) will always be in my heart. Simply, because he took the part, because his granddaughter said she’d never speak to him again if he didn’t. So, he took it for a child’s love.
Richard Harris was and is my favorite too. He looks and sounds more like the illustrations and audio books of Harry Potter. Plus I've always been a fan of Richard Harris films.
I live in the North East of England. I’m about an hour away from one of the locations used for Hogwarts. A place called Alnwick Castle, (pronounced “Ann-ick”). It’s used in scenes like the one the first film when they are learning to fly a broom. It’s a beautiful part of the world.
One of the best movie quotes ever and definitely in Harry Potter. Dumbledore's quote "We must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy."
lupin wasn’t being cowardly by leaving at the end, he was protecting hogwarts and dumbledore’s reputation, as the parents wouldn’t want their children to be taught by a werewolf as they’re incredibly dangerous on full moons as we saw, also bc of prejudice. he also left so that he didn’t hurt the kids, probably didn’t trust himself
If I remember right Snape let it slip (on purpose) that he was a werewolf. In the Wizarding world there is A LOT of prejudice against many creatures, especially werewolves
Though even Lupin called himself a coward, but that's because he's a good person who carries great guilt. Lupin never told Dumbledore about Sirius's secret because that would mean he betrayed Dumbledore's trust when he was a student.
As Amber says, the older Harry gets, the darker the story gets. And one of the brilliant things about the books is that it also gets darker as the *readers* get older.
Do you mean the child readers? A lot of the original readers were already older (and continued to age). My mom was in her sixties when she started buying the books, for herself, her 30-something daughters, and her grandchildren, who were kids. Mom and I still re-read them every few years. She’s 80 something now. Stephen King has said that the books are among his favourites.
@@SuziQ. Yes, of course, the children. The later HP books are written on a level for older kids. I'm not surprised to learn that Stephen King likes them. There are a lot of sophisticated features in the story like the symbolism of black, white, and red in alchemy. Dumbledore's comment at the end of book 1, "It takes even more courage to stand up to your friends" is foreshadowing into the distant future of book 7 when we learned that Grindelwald was his friend. And the fact that he was gay and in love was hinted with such brilliant subtlety that no one saw it, while in retrospect it seems obvious.
Neville is a deep, deep character. Lots of layers. This is the movie where he begins to leave the "school butt-monkey" label behind and starts to become the powerful and effective wizard he's meant to be.
Neville's character arc is second to none. He goes from a shy boy with a second hand wand being raised by a stern grandmother to a courageous leader. In a later book but not in a movie we learn his parents were tortured with that curse. I would love to see the story from Neville's POV.
The actor playing Dumbledore is Sir. Michael Gambon, he actually started playing Dumbledore in Prisoner of Azkaban, not the Goblet of fire. Richard Harris was the actor was originally cast and unfortunately passed away, he did the first two movies. Awesome review!! I look forward to your guy's reviews every week! It's so cool to watch you guys experience these wonderful movies for the first time!!!
The actor that played Cedric's father can sell a scene, Jesus. The fanfare and cheering followed by the murmering and silence then his "MY BBOOYYYYYY" is heart wrenching. One of my favourite aspects, for some reason, is seeing the student's reactions to the serious things they witness and have happened. The staring in almost disbelief and shock of the students, contrasting the joy not moments before, is haunting almost. It baffles me how any student can be mean or not have empathy for Harry by this point and after. He has experienced things most students don't have the maturity to understand and face up to let alone the awareness of the stakes happening around them as they take their classes and chat to their friends and such.
Mr. Diggorys grief always makes me sob. It's so raw, so real. "That's my son!! My boy!!" it really captures a Father's grief because he's not just saying "noo" and crying but continually saying that it was HIS boy who was killed. Really viewing him as a little child although he's almost a grown adult, like all parents view their kids.
That scene where they're all saying goodbye and the other schools are leaving is so sad. Harry sees that everyone made new friends from other countries and had a great time, but he wasn't able to do that because he had more serious things to worry about. And this is the story of his life: while everyone goes to Hogwarts and have the best time of their lives, he has to fight for his life and against evil.
I think Harry's more so worried about all these people making friends but not being aware that they're on the precipice of a new war and that they or their new friends might not make it out alive. He HAS made friends, Fleur and Viktor remained his friends even if they didn't interact much over the remaining books/films, but Harry knows that, stealing a phrase from Dumbledore, dark times are ahead for everyone. He made a new friend in his own school and then watched that friend die in front of him; Harry hates that he knows these people, these kids are going to have the same thing or worse happen to them.
I saw that you were a bit confused when Dumbledore said "Priori Incantatem". That's basically and in ordinary conditions a spell that forces a wand to regurgitate the last spells that it performed in reverse order. But in some rare circumstances it can happen spontaneously, such as when two wands that share the same core are forced to do battle. The odds of that happening are slim, but when it does, the two wands will connect and try to overpower each other. OK, but which wand will be the winner and why? And this is where something comes into play, something that the movies gloss over: there's a lot more to magic than just waving a wand and uttering a spell. The character, intentions and courage of the owner matters a LOT. In that graveyard Harry accepted, even welcomed the possibility of death, something Voldemort was never able to do. He fears death more than anything, this is a principal motif in the story. And so Harry's courage won, his wand overpowered Voldemort's and made it "Priori incantatem", regurgitate the last spells. That's why Voldemort's last victims reappeared in reverse order: Cedric, the old caretaker (his name is Frank Bryce btw), and Harry's parents. Also, remember that Voldemort has no idea that his wand and Harry's are twins, he doesn't have a clue as to what the hell just happened. He probably thinks that Harry beat him due to some special skill. A very particular thing about Voldemort is that he only thinks in terms of power, and so his knowledge about these fine details of magic is very much superficial and incomplete. To quote Dumbledore (book version): "That which Voldemort does not value, he takes no trouble to comprehend. Of house-elves and children's tales, of love, loyalty and innocence Voldemort knows and understands nothing. Nothing. That they all have a power of their own, a power beyond the reach of any magic is a truth he has never grasped"
Well said! Wands are a very serious business. Each witch or wizard should always be able to choose their own. For instance, Ron was forced to use a hand-me-down wand until he broke it in the Whomping Willow. When his parents got him his own, his magic greatly improved. Likewise, Neville's grandmother made him use his father's wand. Those wands will work for you, but it's so much better if you've got the wand that chose you specifically.
What I hate about the Priori Incantantem" thing or the wands connecting.. Is ever since that happens, you see it way too often in Harry Potter fan films, games, and even the Harry Potter movies after the fact. It's supposed to be a rare situation, which is what made it so unique and powerful when it happens with Harry and Voldemort, then suddenly you see it everywhere.
You were on point. By this time in the books Harry was just wanting to go to school and have a normal life. He was tired of being "the boy who lived." Something this movie doesn't detail about Ron as well is he was getting tired of it as well. He never wanted to get caught up in any adventures, and he was stuck in Harry's shadow. He couldn't do anything without being recognized as Harry Potter's friend.
Absolutely. And that on top of being the youngest Weasley boy, always in hand-me-downs, overshadowed by older brothers, and now Harry, even though Harry doesn't mean to.
@@LostintheTangle Yea, it's really unfortunate the movies never went into those details. Even just a few 10-15 second scenes to push that narrative would of been enough to suggest what's going on.
@@mariewagner5283 Not just his older, highly talented brothers, but also his only sister, the youngest child and, as later books would show, an extremely talented and popular witch. And on top of that, not only was he "just" Harry's friend, he wasn't even the notable one - Hermione's the brightest witch of the age and a force in her own right, Ron's just... the sidekick - IIRC Snape even calls him as such during one of the books. Ron's jealousy can be annoying and come at the worst times, but he's a deeply insecure teenage boy surrounded (and overshadowed) by exceptional people - it's understandable, even if it doesn't always garner sympathy.
Fleur DeLacour is part Veela, a magical creature that sort of puts a love spell on mainly men. That’s why Ron just blurted lay asked her to the Yule ball
Guys I could watch each Harry Potter movie 100 times each and never get tired of them. The books would absolutely blow you away with even more revelations. Now especially you can see why this series appealed as much to adults as it did to kids.
Nice to see some book fans here. So many fans have never opened a hp book. I've always thought the movies were poor representations of the source material
@@i.m.7710 69 year old fan here! And I just finished rereading all of the books again for at least the sixth or seventh time! I absolutely love them. Every time I see someone watch them on UA-cam I want to beg them to read the books! So much more plot, detail and everything in them.
"The Goblet of Fire" was a real turning point for the series. Not only did it mark the first full introduction of Voldemort (played brilliantly by Ralph Fiennes), it also treated most of the child actors much more seriously. They were teens by this point, so treating them like children made no sense anymore. They were given more maturity and responsibility with their characters, and I think it shows.
The scene where Dumbledore rips into Harry for getting his name in the Goblet is a big meme for Potterheads because it's the exact opposite in the books.
And Snape in the movies was cold calm to Harry regarding using his own spells against him. Even though he was furious in the books. But it's everyone's different interpretation that makes it interesting.
@@doleofdolonia8859 TBH in the books Snape is a bit of a raging lunatic at times, especially in books 3 and 5 he has his major meltdowns at Harry and Sirius.
The Caretaker at the beginning of the film was played by a man called Eric Sykes, he was a legend in British Comedy and on British TV from the 1950s to the 1990s he came out of retirement to play this role as his grand children were huge Harry Potter fans. He died in 2012
I really encourage you to read the backstory on the Longbottom's. Neville is my favorite character, every aspect of his story, his parents fate, Crouch's role in it, why he is so lousy at magic, and no spoils but some later reveals that only take place in the books if I remember right. It's really one of the most clever plot points of the story
So true, my daughter and I was always so excited when we knew a new Harry Potter move was coming out soon. My daughter and I watched almost every one except I think the last 2(Deathly Hallows pt 1&2) together. It became a tradition for us.
Yeah but it was awesome. I remember reading Order the summer before 10th grade. I remember driving to Walmart during the summer before senior year to buy half blood Prince the first one I could buy with my own money and the summer of 07 getting both the 7th book and 5th movie in one summer. It was fantastic and I wouldn’t trade those times for anything.
Amber, the expressions of awe, wonder and disbelief on your face during these Harry Potter movies just takes me back to my kids seeing them for the first time! I can’t thank you enough for rekindling those precious moments for me 😀
I recently reread the books for the first tine since I was a kid, and man… It almost makes me sad how badly I wish I could have gone to hogwarts, how wonderful that magical world sounds and how envious I am of these fictional characters. The fact that a book can even make me feel this way as an adult really speaks to how amazing they are
The main Hogwarts is a model that is at the Warner Bros studios in Leavesden. You can see it on the tour. For the winter scenes they actually made fake snow and put it on the model. For the close ups of Hogwarts, it was various old buildings in England, castles, universities and libraries. The scenery around Hogwarts was all Scotland, including the railway, viaduct, and Hogsmeade station. It was like the actors, they wanted to film as much in the UK and also use the cream of British actors, it's like a whos who of British acting greats.
Look on line for pics of around Loch Ness, you know, where 'Nessie' lives and other Scotland sites and you will recognize some of the images for these movies.
Having British actors and getting the movies filmed in the UK was the condition J.K.Rowling set to agree to have them done. It changed everything because the world got to know how brilliant the British are at acting.
I always cry when hearing Cedric’s dad cry out in pain. These kids were the same age as these kids and I just deeply feel Mr. Diggory’s pain. The water gremlins are called Grindylows. After you both finish the movie series, I highly recommend reading the books.
When the 1st book was released, my son was in 5th grade and we started reading it together. This was the series that ignited his passion for reading. I was so excited! It was a bit painful to have to wait for each book to be released, and likewise for the movies. I’m so glad we had the opportunity to read all of the books first though, before the movies were made. The books were so stimulating for your imagination, and there’s more detail and background in them.
@@Tipper65 The kids in the movie were the same age as my kids and their friends were at the time. I didn’t read the books until I was laid up after surgery years later.
The scene when Harry brings back Cedrics body and is screaming clinging to him shows the growth in acting chops in Harry. Then Cedrics dad. I teat up every time. Love this series.
“Soon, we must all face the choice between what is right, and what is easy.” I think about that quote by Dumbledore every day. We have to make that choice daily. We have to keep choosing what is right.
The actor who played Amos Diggory (Cedric's dad) did an AMAZING job at portraying grief and tragedy when he finds out his son died. Every time I watch this movie and he says "That's my boy!" it just HURTS!
Agreed. As much as I hate Godfather III, the scene at the end where Michael cradles his daughter’s body on the steps of the opera house is the most heartbreaking movie scene ever. Pacino deserved an Oscar, just for that one scene.
For real. My brother lost his first born daughter. Seeing Cedric’s dad react brought back some terrible memories that hurt so bad. It’s the sound of grief so strong that it feels like it could be fatal by itself. It’s the worst sound I’ve ever heard
1:01:57 . . . This part makes me cry every single time. Fabulous acting. You can really feel the depth of his grief. I’m not sure I could go on if my son died.
Dame Maggie Smith does a wonderful job as Professor McGonagall. I loved her in the Sister Act movies which my mom loved watching when I was growing up and then she took on this fantastic role. This movie series really highlighted a lot of under-appreciated British actors and it's wonderful seeing all of them together in one place.
Maggie Smith is a living legend in the acting profession. You only need to look at her resume. Even young, popular actors get star struck when they meet her.
@@NavvyMom That is a good question and I had not thought of that until now. I watched Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey and loved her as Violet Crawley. I was sticking to her movie roles as this channel will post movies on Film Friday and Movie Monday. I suppose that MAY be the reason why nobody has mentioned her in Downton Abbey Now the first time I had known of Maggie Smith is when I watched the 1981 movie version of "Clash of the Titans" and she played the goddess 'Thetis'. When cable television first became available to us, we watched that movie over and over again. It has been years since we watched it though. Then again Downton Abbey did have only 2 movies that came out after season 6 of the television show had ended. personally, I think Julian Fellowes created the first movie to bring audiences who have never seen the show to be curious about it enough to watch the series through streaming services to become more familar with the characters. I think it worked! The second move Downton Abbey a New Era I think that about sums it up for entire cast and the show as a whole. I do not know if Julian Fellowes has intentions of making a third movie.
Mr. Diggory's cries bring me to tears no matter how many times I have seen this movie. The guttural noises he makes are heartbreaking, they leave me with chills. Amazing acting, displaying the utter grief from the loss of a child so acutely.
1:38 I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but the opening sequences get darker and darker in each film. 38:58 Cedric, like other Hufflepuffs, has a strong moral compass. Since Harry gave him a hint about the task with the dragons, he returned the favor and gave Harry a hint about the next task. Also, in the previous film, there was a scene with Harry playing Quidditch (against Hufflepuff) and then he suddenly fell from his broom after being overwhelmed by dementors. The Hufflepuff Seeker was none other than Cedric, and he caught the Snitch shortly after. It is not mentioned in the film but it is said in the book that after catching the Snitch, Cedric soon realized what had happened to Harry and immediately offered to replay the match. However, Gryffindor captain, Oliver Wood, declined this offer, saying that Hufflepuff had won the game fair and square. Just another reason why Hufflepuff is the greatest House with the greatest qualities (IMO 😉) and we're glad to have Amber join our ranks!
Ummm ... "strong morals" would mean that he would have done it WITHOUT "owing Harry a favor". P.S.: Harry did the same thing first and isnt Hufflepuff, so it isnt a "Hufflepuff trait". [Stop assuming something without excluding other options that would prove your theory wrong.]
@@Muck006 ummm... strong morals indicate wanting to help others how they helped you. taking and never giving back is selfish. {I'm gonna put some pretentious shit in brackets so I seem superior to you, even though I attempted to show off in my earlier manner of text}
@@Deadbeatcow I'm not sure how my words were misconstrued to make it seem as if I'm discrediting Harry because I'm not. I just think Cedric should get the credit he deserves, because unfortunately Hufflepuffs are often overlooked... I simply wanted to lift up Cedric as a sort of standard-bearer of Hufflepuff House, like Harry is to Gryffindor. When many students were wearing those "Potter Stinks" badges, it was Cedric who asked his fellow Hufflepuffs to stop wearing them (of course, the Slytherins still wore them throughout the tournament).
I am begging you guys...please read the books!! The background stories and details you want more of are in the books. You will not be disappointed!!! I love your reactions...I feel like I am watching these movies for the first time again. You are gonna love 5....it's one of my favorites!!
If anybody doesn't want to read them they should try the audiobook versions. Actor Jim Dale does an AMAZING job narrating the whole series. It's like having your British grandfather reading you a bedtime story.
Yup. This movie isn't particularly my favourite because they totally skipped over my favourite chapter: "The Parting of the Ways" but the book is certainly my top 3. From book 3-7 (minus book 6 imo) are awesome reads.
💯 I reread the whole series once a year! Well I listen and I love it. Currently on book 6 and watching your reactions really help me see the differences. This movie is well done but strays so much from the book. We missed out on winky and dobby.
I was so excited when I woke up today realizing it was Friday and knowing this reaction was gonna be here. Glad you guys are enjoying and looking forward to the next one!
Same! I actually saw this drop last night at like 2:30am, and had to sternly tell myself: "NO! Go to sleep, and watch this in the morning when you're refreshed and can fully enjoy two of the best HP reactors around lately." Worth the wait ❤
David Tennant (Barty Crouch, Jr.) is a wonderful actor who has gotten amazing roles. This one, both the 10th and 13th incarnations of the Doctor in Doctor Who, and Crowley in Good Omens, to name a few highlights. I loved him in this. Thanks for another great reaction. You're going to love the next one (and the ones after that)!
Fred and George cheering on the dragon gets me every time 🤣 😂🤣😂 they are the best. You had me dying when you said he's got his own body he's not resting on the back of someone's head.
This was the book that hooked me. The ending to this was what transformed this (to me) from "kid's lit" to Holy Shit! It was so much darker than what had come before, that it made me sit up and pay attention. What I love about this series is that Rowling increased the complexity of the story book by book - each one was appropriate for someone just a little bit older than the one before, so people could literally grow up with the series. It was very impressive writing!
Sirius was able to sneak past the dementors because he was one of the inventors of the marauders map- He, Harry's Father, Wormtail and Professor Lupin new the school inside out because of their wanderings once a month when Lupin became a werewolf. They new all the secret passage ways in and out of the school.
An explanation that would have literally taken 30 seconds to explain in POA. That it was omitted, yet Professor Mooney is shown knowing the incantation to clear the map, bugs me to this day!
actually thats only half of it...when sirius was in azkaban he would transform into a dog to keep his sanity because dementors have a harder time with animal emotions then human ones... so basically the dementors saw a dog and didnt think anything of it
This movie, but moreso... THE BOOK. This was the book that made me an absolute Harry Potter fanatic when I was a kid. I read the first 3 with my dad, and I was the same age as Harry as all of these came out. When I read this one by myself though? I couldn't believe how good it was, and I related to him so much because we were the same age. The moment Cedric's dad realizes... When I was a kid reading this, it made me cry. The movie got me too. Now that I'm a parent though... It's just so gut wrenching. The performance is so good that I can't help but think of my own boys, and it ALWAYS hits me so hard.
Relating to much to everything you just said. The book series was an absolute defining part of my childhood, I loved it so much and it truly made me the avid reader I am today. The writing is just magical 🤌✨ the movies have been incredible to watch through the years, I enjoy watching people discovering the magic for themselves & it just makes me happy to know I'll get to share it someday soon with my own kids. 💕
Fun fact: Between filming movies the kids were asked to not cut their hair and let it grow so the movie team could style it for the next film. The director for this movie never got the memo and just liked their shaggy looks when they showed up and kept it. Daniel and Rupert were not impressed.
they didn't show this in the film, but Rita Skeeter is actually an unregistered animagus. She turns into a beetle and listens into conversations. Hermione caught her, trapped her and later released her with the threat of exposing her to The Ministry.
My brother lost his first born daughter some years ago. Seeing Cedric’s dad react brought back some terrible memories that hurt so badly. It’s the sound of grief so strong that it feels like it could be fatal by itself. It’s the worst sound I’ve ever heard.
Pretty cool to find out Harry survived Voldemort's killing curse because of his mom's love. Not to mention why he had to return to aunt's house every summer. Because her blood made it the safest place for him.❤
@Don't Look @ Me You never read Order of the Phoenix? Harry and his aunt share Lily's blood. As long as aunt Petunia is alive and Harry can call her house, his home, Voldemort and his followers can't harm Harry there.
When Jay said "what if it's true?" That's the moment. THE moment. The moment we all saw that J K Rowling has pulled two more willing souls into her wizarding world. That's what the Harry Potter books do! Welcome welcome Jay and Amber x
I've always loved what they did with the Tri-Wizard Tournament in this movie, seeing it play out in movie format after reading the book was so cool as a kid to me
I think it's like a bit of the secret ingredient in sports. For those who like/liked sports. This movie has a drive and purpose, and the need for Harry to excell in a competitive way, instead of just "problems at school" and what not.
What was in the books was much better but they did a very good job for the movie. I really hoped to see the sphinx from the book but sadly it wasn’t in the movie. I still really enjoyed the movie though.
@@MrZeuz666 so it’s been a very long time since I read the books so plz keep that in mind. What I remember was at some point of goin through the maze Harry comes across a sphinx and the sphinx tells Harry that if Harry correctly answers a riddle that he (the sphinx) will tell Harry the correct direction to go to the Tri-Wiz Cup! I am having a bit of a hard time remembering it exactly but I distinctly remember the sphinx and the riddle. Also that Harry gives the correct answer and gets very far ahead of the others.
If you have time, you'd love reading the books. There are a number of sub-plots that the movie doesn't even touch on that are similarly woven together into an amazingly complex fabric that holds together well. She wrote an amazing series.
My daughter has a spreadsheet on the refrigerator counting down to each Friday because she's so excited for you guys to watch the rest of the movies. Once you've seen all of them, I highly recommend reading/listening to the books. There is so much more details in the books that round out the characters and add so much to the storylines.
I first listened to all the books and so intrigued I have watched all. The movies and am now on my second time around going through them all again. J.K. Rowling is a genius author.
Emma Watson was already pretty but in the books, Hermione is commonly described as 'plain' because she doesn't care about her looks and prefers studying(She also had buck teeth). The Yule Ball scene is a huge reveal that Hermione is very pretty if she puts in the work, so much so that Ron and Harry actually didn't recognize her at first. She later reveals to Harry that in order to look like that every day, she'd have to put in hours of work. Also left out of the movie is Fleur Delacour's story. Fleur is part Veela, a magical race of sentient women who have an enchanting beauty and actual magic that causes men to want to do anything to impress them. The reason Ron just randomly asked her to the ball was because of this allure magic. Also also, Snape in the books is way more of a cruel jerk. He constantly takes points from Harry for stuff like 'breathing too loud,' he sabotages Harry's potion grades, he constantly bullies Neville, and one time Hermione was hit by a spell that made her front teeth grow to the point where they were past her face, and Snape said he didn't see a difference between that and Hermione's regular buck teeth.
Nice reaction guys. Now we're in a totally different ball game, now this a true battle of Good vs Evil, just like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars The reason it was so painful for Neville to see the effects of the "Cruciatis" curse the torture curse is that this curse was used by death eaters to torture his parents, Frank and Alice Longbottom, making them crazy to the point they've since been hospitalised in a special hospital for wizards and haven't shown any improvement of their mental condition since. Go see them is always traumatising for him. The memory from the pensine is something that happened after Voldemort was "defeated" by baby Harry : Death-Eaters being trialed. In that scene, we learn several things : 1) Igor Karkaroff, the head-master of the Durmstrangt school, used to be a Death Eater 2) We learn about the torturing of Frank and Alice Longbottom 3) We learn about Barty Crouch Jr, the son Barty Croupton Sr (the grey haired guy, he works for the ministry of magic) being a death-eater. About this, one thing important to know is that, Barty Crouch used hi power and his relations to avoid his son being taken to Azkaban and tried to lock him up himself. Barty Crouch is the dark haired guy we see with Voldemort during the opening scene and he's also the guys who throws the Voldemort sign after the attack on the Quidditch World Cup.. So basically we have a death-eater at loose, in contact with Voldemort and we know Voldemort had given him a mission to send the others a sign that would warn them that Voldemort is coming back and that they need to be ready
I love how many things you guys pick up on! The introduction getting darker will be something that you will notice each time and it foreshadows the mood of each film. You mentioned how the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher always changes and its actually because its a cursed position! I can't wait for you all to get to these next few movies. They really take off from here!!
Dumbledore was the new Dumbledore in Prisoner of Azkaban. I was actually taken aback that you didn't mention it and wondered if you had noticed. Richard Harris (the first Dumbledore) was a singer and had a popular song called MacCarther Park and Weird Al parodied it with Jurassic Park.
"Dark times are ahead where we have to choose between what is right and what is easy'' Dumbledore. These words were written by J.K Rowling. Bless her for creating such profound tales.

The books hold a special endearing place in my heart. I never started off reading the books. Watched movie 1&2 then my younger bro who had just received book 5 on release told me to read book 3, and I never looked back. I still remember going to Asda supermarket at midnight for the release of book 7 with my younger bro, and Never forget seeing some of the hardest roadman (London term) I know queueing up for said book lol. I still read them once a year or so, and if and when I have kids, they're gonna grow up reading these books.
The actor who yells "MORSMORDRE!" and sends the Dark Mark into the sky at the World Cup? That's David Tennant, aka the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who. I've met him. Fantastic person! He does these CREEPY bad guys (you should see him in Jessica Jones... but he'll possibly give you nightmares), but offstage he is just this friendly silly goofy man with a lovely Scottish accent. Wonderful with the fans.
Fun fact: the actress who played Myrtle was in reality, about 40 years old. She's been in a ton of British films, and I personally love the character. So funny.
Cedric is an example of how amazing Hufflepuffs are. :) This movie makes me cry every time he dies. Such a wonderful movie. So glad you're both enjoying the journey!
Besides the final film, this has always been my favorite movie of the series. That scream by the father at the end, that just primal scream of pain at the loss of his son gets me every time.
You have to remember that. Ron is one of seven children, growing up in a poor family, who's only claim to any sort of fame as being Harry Potter's friend. He's never had the spotlight on himself, and his best friend has always had every eye on them. His jealousy is natural when you figure how the first few years of their friendship has gone
Ralph Fiennes played Lord Voldemort. He also had starring roles in other great films, such as "Quiz Show", " The Grand Budapest Hotel", and "Schindler's List". I highly recommend the first two, great movies, but Schindler's List is in a league of its own.

Tom Riddle is obsessed with Death and defeating/overcoming death. The name Voldemort is French for "Thief of Death". The spell used to summon Voldemort's symbol--the skull & the snake, is Morsmordre which means "Take a bite out of Death". And of course Voldy's followers are known as Death Eaters. You could even say that Voldemort's overall endgame may have something to do with becoming permanently immune to, uh, Death's "charms"... Love the vids guys! Can't wait to see more Potter stuff! P.S.-- Robert Pattinson, the actor from Twilight who plays Cedric Diggory, also plays Bruce Wayne/The Batman in the newest one.

It wasn't written for kids. That's just how bookstores and libraries keep labeling them. It was written for everyone who enjoys a good read, a good story with complex characters facing choices -- as Dumbledore says -- "between what's right and what's easy." Our choices is what makes one person different from another. Look for a quote on that in the next film. My favorite line in the all 7 books.
This is my favorite of all the Potter movies. It really shows the kids growing into themselves and becoming young adults. And the tournament is exciting and I love them dressing up for the ball
Richard Harris played Prof Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films, and was in ill health during filming of The Chamber of Secrets. He passed away 2 weeks before the film's U.S. premiere. Michael Gambon took up the role of Dumbledore beginning with The Prisoner of Azkaban, and ending with The Deathly Hallows Part 2.
The reason Neville was disturbed and scared when Mad Eye Moddy (Barty Chrunc jr.) Cruio cast the curse on the spider is because Neville's parents were given a powerful Cruio curse by Bellatrix in front of Neville when he was very young. Both of them lost their mental health from the pain in their bodies and were sent to a mental hospital. Neville was raised by his grandmother, as they are still in the mental hospital since then. When Neville saw the spider suffering, he remembered the torture of his parents.
Hogwarts knew that he was the fake mad eye moody. Remember when the first time he entered the hall, and the ceiling started to goin crazy thunder to him. 🧐
Hey Jay and Amber, the reason for Dumbledore being played by a different actor is because the original actor, Richard Harris, died after the 2nd movie had been released, Michael Gambon had took up the role starting in the 3rd movie
The actor playing Barty Crouch, Jr. is such a beloved actor that it's both hilarious how much people hate this guy, but also a testament to just how good an actor David Tennant is, that he completely subsumes his generally sweet nature to act so evil for a part if necessary. If you want to see him in a more lovable role, take a peek at some 2006-2010 episodes of Doctor Who, or the 50th anniversary, or wait for November and see him in the 60th anniversary of the show. He also had a fun role as one of the two major characters in Good Omens.
The 2nd actor to play dumbledore actually started in the last movie 😉 The original dumbledore was only in the first 2 movies, sadly. Tho they both do a great job, the original, Richard Harris, was exactly how I had imagined him in the books. Even his voice was perfect for it.
yea this is one of the few fanchises that stays strong through the whole series. loved these whent hey 1st came out, we had to wait years for them to finish it was sucked soooo much. i like to watch them all back to back once a year like my star trek shows and star wars and what not. glad yall are hooked on it too. keep up the good work.
In the book.. the kids were told to pack dress robes along with their curriculum school books. Did anyone ever notice how HERMOINE’s dress matched the colors of Ron’s dress robes? Almost as if she sent an Owl to Mrs Weasley and got his colors ahead of time. She wanted Ron to ask her from the very begging! That’s why she was so devastated and yelled “Ron, you ruined everything!”😢
Harry may be the ‘boy who lived’ and has many talents, but it’s wise to remember that he is actually quite an average student at Hogwarts. It’s only the people around him that hype up the fact he defeated Voldemort when he was a baby and Harry tries to keep his head down but unfortunately the reputation sticks and people, like Ron and Seamus get the wrong impression.
This is a good point. I believe Harry’s greatest attribute is that he INSPIRES everyone around him. Hermione, Ron, Neville, Luna, The Weasleys, Seamus & Dean, Cedric etc. He’s loyal to Dumbledor. They love him because he’s a good friend and he’s the bravest. They all ride or die for Harry
Yes, but Harry is only an average student because he doesn't actually put forth the effort in class or homework. When Harry actually puts in the effort, like when Remus was his DADA professor or when he had Snape's copy of Advanced Potion Making and wasn't under the impression that he'd fail no matter what, Harry gets phenomenal grades. Harry hold himself back because of his friends. Harry sees how frustrated Hermione gets when he or anyone else does better than her, so he tries not to do better than she does in class. Ron doesn't want to put in the effort himself, and he gets upset when Harry doesn't slack off with him. Harry even admits to picking his electives because they're what Ron picked rather than doing research into them because he didn't want to be alone. Harry's fear of being abandoned isn't as intense as his fear of fear itself, but it plays a close second for him. Harry is brilliant when he lets himself be, like when he teaches the DA or even when he works out the sphinx's riddle, but he's always held himself back for fear of driving those closest to him away.

The actor who plays Cedric's father really nailed that father mourning his son. I tear up every single time I see that scene because of him.
I do too. He nailed that grief. I felt that before I had kids. But it really hurts now that I do have kids. 😭
He’s a fantastic actor! He’s great on the series Doc Martin!
It’s my own grief personified and I feel it resonates with us all. Beautifully (and painfully) done.
Me too. When I read the book, I was sad that he died, but I didn’t cry until I watched the movie. The reaction of his father gets to me every time.
Every single time!!!!
The Cruciatus curse is the torture curse. It bothered Neville so much because when he was a baby, his parents were tortured by the Cruciatus so badly that they lost their minds. They don't recognize Neville to this day. He was raised by his grandmother.
Neville's the g.o.a.t.
So he knew exactly who Neville was and what he was forcing him to see
@@AkimboJV in the books there is a brief visit to the hospital for Ron's dad, at st mungo's, where harry sees neville's parents
He is -- all three of them are -- also going through puberty/adolescence: Hormone High!
Even in the films most of his lines were given to Hermione, its understandable Ron is mad
@M B Yep, like in the first movie Ron helps Hermione escape the plant because she was freaking out. She knew what to do but couldn't put it into action without rons help. In the movies ron needs help
And his other friend is the smartest student in their class (probably the entire school)!
Its not that sad lol
Ehm, and what data you have access to to state that those people were "Most important in his life" at all! Victims were chosen by another people, most likely by judges, ministry of magic, and/or other officials, most likely from the pool of available people at the location. Do you really think goblet itself suddenly "spoke its wisdon" and everyone around immediately executed it? Those was circumstantial choice.
He never tried to show himself as anything more, so who cares?
Yeah I disagree with this too. I think the judges just had to choose who to take from the pool of people already at Hogwarts, so for the students who came from other schools farther away (that didn't already have a sibling there), there would've been a smaller pool of people to choose from for this. Doesn't mean that was necessarily THE most important person in their lives.
Snape at study hall always makes me laugh, especially the sleeve tugging part.
Yeah, I wonder if Alan Rickman added that part, just as a touch to show Snape preparing another assault on Harry and Ron. Its like he took a twisted sort of delight in it.
You can see Daniel breaking in that scene. It’s hilarious
My wife like that part 2
Neville was so affected by the spell that Moody used on the spider because the spell, the Cruciatus Curse (which is a torture spell that causes immense pain), was used on his parents and they were tortured into insanity so they can't even recognize anyone or anything around them.

Richard Harris (Dumbledore in 1& 2) will always be in my heart. Simply, because he took the part, because his granddaughter said she’d never speak to him again if he didn’t. So, he took it for a child’s love.

lupin wasn’t being cowardly by leaving at the end, he was protecting hogwarts and dumbledore’s reputation, as the parents wouldn’t want their children to be taught by a werewolf as they’re incredibly dangerous on full moons as we saw, also bc of prejudice. he also left so that he didn’t hurt the kids, probably didn’t trust himself
If I remember right Snape let it slip (on purpose) that he was a werewolf. In the Wizarding world there is A LOT of prejudice against many creatures, especially werewolves
I think he got movies number 2 and 3 mixed up for a second. The cowardly professor he was talking about was Lockhart from Chamber.
Though even Lupin called himself a coward, but that's because he's a good person who carries great guilt. Lupin never told Dumbledore about Sirius's secret because that would mean he betrayed Dumbledore's trust when he was a student.
Yes. The only thing Lupin ever feared was himself.
He is one of my fav characters
Him and harry are similar but different but both suffered alot mentally
Neville's character arc is second to none. He goes from a shy boy with a second hand wand being raised by a stern grandmother to a courageous leader.
In a later book but not in a movie we learn his parents were tortured with that curse.
I would love to see the story from Neville's POV.

Yeah just got to that part and my face is rather wet with tears right now
Same here. Same

Yea that his a great actor he also appears in the Doc Martin tv series BBC. I recommend everyone to watch
He has always sacrificed so much and remains really brave after everything he’s been through. He’s one of my favourite characters made in any Movie
To quote Dumbledore (book version):
"That which Voldemort does not value, he takes no trouble to comprehend. Of house-elves and children's tales, of love, loyalty and innocence Voldemort knows and understands nothing. Nothing. That they all have a power of their own, a power beyond the reach of any magic is a truth he has never grasped"
Wow, I never realized that about Voldemort’s wand and that being the reason everyone was able to show up to help Harry. Thanks for sharing! 😊
@@Cramblit Oh, if only this was the biggest problem with some of the later movies...! But yes, I agree.
@@LostintheTangle The wand choose the wizard.

@@Cramblit Right, whenever I see someone watch these movies they think Ron is just being an a-hole. The movies really did Ron dirty.

So true, my daughter and I was always so excited when we knew a new Harry Potter move was coming out soon. My daughter and I watched almost every one except I think the last 2(Deathly Hallows pt 1&2) together. It became a tradition for us.
@@lapukas yes I did the same!😊
Yeah but it was awesome.
I can’t thank you enough for rekindling those precious moments for me 😀
I stan Amber!!
I recently reread the books for the first tine since I was a kid, and man… It almost makes me sad how badly I wish I could have gone to hogwarts, how wonderful that magical world sounds and how envious I am of these fictional characters. The fact that a book can even make me feel this way as an adult really speaks to how amazing they are
Every fan waited on the year they turned 11 to get a letter, even if they didn't believe it, there was a part of us that wanted it
The main Hogwarts is a model that is at the Warner Bros studios in Leavesden.
Actually Hogsmead station is in England, it's Goathland station in north Yorkshire (also Goathland was the filming location for Heartbeat)
I have been to several locations, the train and train station, and Alnwick Castle, where a lot of the Hogwart's outdoor court yard scenes were filmed.
Even the extras had to be British as well with the exception of Susan Bones actress on the first movie.
These reactions to Potter honestly make my day! Thank you watching these and like I said in the others.. I love McGonagall!!!!
“Soon, we must all face the choice between what is right, and what is easy.”
I think about that quote by Dumbledore every day.
That is just brutal. It honestly tears me up every time.
Ditto. Losing a child is…. Unthinkable. I can’t really think about it or I start to just come apart.
I agree! I loved her as 'Mother Superior' in Sister Act 1 & 2, I also enjoyed her in "The Lady in the Van" and "Gosford Park"
Why is no one mentioning Downton Abbey? Or are y'all just sticking to movie roles?
A phenomenal actor playing a wicked sharp character. She gets more and more badass as the movies go on. Even more so in the books.
@@Muck006 ummm... strong morals indicate wanting to help others how they helped you. taking and never giving back is selfish. {I'm gonna put some pretentious shit in brackets so I seem superior to you, even though I attempted to show off in my earlier manner of text}
@@QuackAttack I wasn't replying to you, I was replying to the one before me. I agree with your comment haha

If you don’t have much time to read, they are great from Audible. You can listen in the car and pray for more traffic!!
I was so excited when I woke up today realizing it was Friday and knowing this reaction was gonna be here. Glad you guys are enjoying and looking forward to the next one!
Same! I actually saw this drop last night at like 2:30am, and had to sternly tell myself: "NO! Go to sleep, and watch this in the morning when you're refreshed and can fully enjoy two of the best HP reactors around lately."

David Tennant is AMAZING. If you want to be super freaked out watch David play Kilgrave, the bad guy in the Jessica Jones tv series.

Actually it was Peter pettigrew who was the fourth. Snape could get past them because he was protected by Dumbledore
An explanation that would have literally taken 30 seconds to explain in POA. That it was omitted, yet Professor Mooney is shown knowing the incantation to clear the map, bugs me to this day!
@@pamyaccarino7838 I wasn’t saying them I order , just explaining who they were.
actually thats only half of it...when sirius was in azkaban he would transform into a dog to keep his sanity because dementors have a harder time with animal emotions then human ones... so basically the dementors saw a dog and didnt think anything of it
Yes Sirius could evade the dementors because he was an animagus right?? Not because he made the marauders map or due to dumbledore

Don’t do it J! Don’t let her talk you into watching Twilight!! Don’t do it!!
@Don't Look @ Me You never read Order of the Phoenix? Harry and his aunt share Lily's blood. As long as aunt Petunia is alive and Harry can call her house, his home, Voldemort and his followers can't harm Harry there.
Dumbledore calmly asks Harry
“HARRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Lol
Halfway though!
When Jay said "what if it's true?" That's the moment. THE moment. The moment we all saw that J K Rowling has pulled two more willing souls into her wizarding world. That's what the Harry Potter books do! Welcome welcome Jay and Amber x
Suspension of disbelief I think.
@@charmylynn5261 I kinda wish the sphinx was in the movie too, but I'll take what I can get I suppose
@@charmylynn5261 It rings a bell but I forget. Can you remind me?
Yes! The books contain so much information that the movies left out.
My favorite subplot in this book is the Rita Skeeter story. 😂
Now we're in a totally different ball game, now this a true battle of Good vs Evil, just like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars
The reason it was so painful for Neville to see the effects of the "Cruciatis" curse the torture curse is that this curse was used by death eaters to torture his parents, Frank and Alice Longbottom, making them crazy to the point they've since been hospitalised in a special hospital for wizards and haven't shown any improvement of their mental condition since. Go see them is always traumatising for him.
The memory from the pensine is something that happened after Voldemort was "defeated" by baby Harry : Death-Eaters being trialed. In that scene, we learn several things :
1) Igor Karkaroff, the head-master of the Durmstrangt school, used to be a Death Eater
2) We learn about the torturing of Frank and Alice Longbottom
3) We learn about Barty Crouch Jr, the son Barty Croupton Sr (the grey haired guy, he works for the ministry of magic) being a death-eater.
Crouch not Croupton
@@doolie165 Sorry. That's the french name, my bad...

When I saw this movie for the first time, Amos's realization to Cedrics death was truly heartbreaking. I never cry and I still tear up to this day.
He made his tv breakthrough in 1994's 'Takin' Over The Asylum'
The new Dumbledore was in the last movie guys 😂

The actor who was recast as 'Professor Dumbledore' first appeared in 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban'. His name is Michael Gambon.
The 2nd actor to play dumbledore actually started in the last movie 😉 The original dumbledore was only in the first 2 movies, sadly. Tho they both do a great job, the original, Richard Harris, was exactly how I had imagined him in the books. Even his voice was perfect for it.
that was a whole different actor?😭
I can't wait for the next 4 reactions. Let me tell you, sh*t is about to get real!!
yea this is one of the few fanchises that stays strong through the whole series. loved these whent hey 1st came out, we had to wait years for them to finish it was sucked soooo much. i like to watch them all back to back once a year like my star trek shows and star wars and what not. glad yall are hooked on it too. keep up the good work.
Yes, been waiting for this reaction all day.
Can't wait to see you both see how they have grown and the new twists in the story.
👍

Comments section is as fun as watching you guys react to this amazing series. Get to see and interact with other fans whom it left such an impression on.
The way Jay was mocking Malfoy's snobbery took me out! 😂😭💀
I figured you both would really enjoy TGOF,
happy to see that you did!
The Order of The Phoenix is my very favorite of
the entire series. The SFX for it is just so beautiful.
You guys have so much great stuff to look forward to!
57:34 Cudos to Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort. He really brought the series up a notch or two.
The casts in these films are phenomenal. Many academy award winners and nominees. I think that is what often takes the films to the next level.
