As a musician, when I first heard this song from the remake it really, really stood out to me. There's several reasons why, and I think I mainly contribute it to the fusion of genres, as this song now has a very folk-inspired style, but the drums are what really caught my attention. Mostly because they sound like drums from not this type of song, but from a rock or metal piece - and the choice really drives home whatever feeling that this gives and I really dig it.
I think it meshes incredibly well with the feeling of Rogueport being a town that is one of the true representations of a melting pot in the Mario series, so much so that this new rendition is quickly overwriting my memory of the original. It's a mix of the "new adventure" feeling, something daring, audacious, dangerous, exciting, and even heroic at times. Your comment on the drums sounding rock-like is especially true in the B section too. You can really hear the heaviness in the pulsing half note downbeats.

Only an hour in and the amount of SFX I’ve heard ripped right out of Color Splash and Origami King has brought this remake from a ten to an eleven EASILY. The newer games’ influence isn’t lost on this reimagining of a classic and for that, I love it so much more.
This is a great song. I did not like at first but goodness this part around 1:10 goes really hard ! I think it evocates pretty well what a coastal town feels like. Great rendition. I planned to play at first with Gamecube music but now I think they nailed the reorchestration.

A good version, however it doesn't really fit the vibe... the original fit the vibe of "this is a strange shady town I'm walking in" well. This? This is "WOW! Look at this town! This town is so strange and shady! Holy crap!" Just... too much.

Now hear me out... I’m surprised they didn’t make this a dynamic chapter-based theme since these are mostly in the spirit of Origami King. On that game, however, the hub world, Toad Town had like 8 versions based on all the streamers freed. What if they had done the same here? Start quiet and slow and add more as it goes on. However Toad Town made more sense because it was a restoration and this is not. All in all though, the OG’s soundtrack has 20 whole years of listening. This one slaps on its very own right.
