Ronaldo's chance to win the World Cup and complete his comeback needs a deep rewind

  • Ronaldo faced a ton of pressure in the 2002 World Cup: to return Brazil to international glory, to justify the controversial choices of his coach, and to resurrect his reputation as the world's best footballer after a period of terrible injuries. With only a few minutes remaining in the final vs. Germany, Ronaldo had a chance to put his nation up 2-0, all but guaranteeing a title. Before we see what happened, let's review how we arrived at this moment in history.

It's weird to say this about a brazillian team, but this was SUCH a Cinderella run. Losing in such a shameful fashion after being the clear favorites in 1998 was a national trauma - I have friends that to this day believe conspirational theories about Nike forcing Brasil to sell out and lose. After that, the team's trajectory mirrored Ronaldo's - a clear downward trend after the greatest prospect in a generation had not one but two career-ending injuries. This WC proved that even a hobbled Ronaldo was better than 99% of healthy football players and delivered one of the most iconic NT performances in brazillian history.

not really though, Ronaldo has been on his peak performance during late 90s-early 2K (even with his injury), combined with Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, and Cafu, this team was the true main contender. People slept on them because Scolari played boring tactic and abandoned fans favorite (Romario).

This wasn't so much of a Cinderella run considering who Brazil had to beat to get to the finals. Apart from when they faced England and in the final, Brazil had an obligation to win all their games. And in the final, they faced the worst German WC side since... I don't even know when.
And quite honestly, that 2002 squad is probably Brazil's worst squad to win the WC. It was a team carried by Rivaldo and Ronaldo, Rivaldo being the best player of that World Cup and ended up overlooked by both Ronaldo and Kahn.

  • @Jerubicarmus

I can´t stress enough how critical Kahn was for this deep run for Germany. Just google his highlights against the USA. If you watch the whole match as it goes on, you can literally see the frustration and desperation the US-forwards felt everytime Kahn makes a spectatcular safe or just impersonates a human sized wall in 1vs1 situations. This german team was fine, but also horrendous in defensive chemestry and quality. South Korea or the US should have knocked us out of the tournament, Kahn wouldn´t let that happen. The only mistake he made was against the greatest striker of his generation. Brazil deserved this world cup and I´m happy Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho got a titel, well deserved.

For non-Brazilian viewers, Ronaldo's haircut in 2002 was inspired by a very famous comic book in Brazil, Turma da Mônica (translated as Monica's Gang or Monica and Friends), being similar to Smudge's (Cascão) haircut. And it was so iconic that many people in Brazil look to repeat it from times to times, including Brazil's current number 9 Richarlison, who made it some years ago and promised to Ronaldo he will make the Cascão haircut if Brazil wins the WC this year.

The ball control, dribbling, burst of speed in a short distance (post injury Ronaldo wasn't the speed demon he used to be) and more than anything, the little flick of the boot as a shot. Ronaldo seemed to be capable of shooting, with power and accuracy, from anywhere and in anyway he wanted. It didn't matter that there was no angle, no space, no time, or that the position favored his left foot: as long as there was day light between him and goal, he was a threat.

    A couple of extra notes:
Ballack was suspended because he got a yellow card in the semi-finals against South-Korea. FIFA would change the rules to prevent this from happening in the next WC so the best players can play in the final.
Pressure was so high in Brazil, that even the President of Brazil wanted Romário to go. Scolari was never a master tactician, but he knew how to build a tight group and motivate them, specially in the knock-out stages. After him, sometimes you'll see strange rosters by Brazil because of the pressure (corruption?) by agents and others to promote players by having them play or be on the squad for a couple of games. Scolari was the last independent manager they had and it's not a surprise that they haven´t won the WC since 2002, although 2022 might be different, because they are stacked with young talent.
After that horrible injury by Ronaldo, as a football fan, it was nice to see a glimer of what he was before in this WC. That was a great comebck story.
And the referees were horrible in this WC.

    More context:
    - Years later, Romário gave an interview saying that he never got the chance to hook-up with the flight attendant, losing both on the world cup and the flight attendant
    - Romário's antics is enough to make a entire video on it's on, including:
    - Telling Pelé to shut up and mind his own business, in national television
    - Fighting with fans, chairman, giving the finger to fans, fighting with coaches, and teammates mid-game
    - Famously hated training, dissapearing for days at the time, just showing up minutes before the start of the game
    - Being kick-out of the match for punching Simeone in the face, then travelling back to Rio in the matter of hours just to play fut-volley
    - When he played for Barcelona, Romário wanted to go to the Carnival but Cruyff would only let him go if he scored a hat-trick, Romário did, and he left the game just before the 1°st half ended
    - During the World Cup Qualifiers of 94, Brazil was facing a serious possibility of getting defeated in the last match against Uruguay, and not going the World Cup, all the coaches resisted calling Romário until the very end, and Romário got called reluctantly, and Brazil won the decisive match for 2x0, with Romário scoring all the goals, and the rest is history.
    - Regarding to the injury Ronaldo had just before the finals against France, the injury was as bad as everybody said it was, but minutes just before the game, the physicians did a battery of exams on Ronaldo, and they said that Ronaldo was ok, so Zagallo decided to put him on the starting eleven.
    - When Brazil won the World Cup, EVERYONE wanted Ronaldo haircut, including me, lol.

2002 was probably the weirdest WC ever, with openly partial referees elevating South Korea into the semis. The fact that referee teams were arbitrarily mixed around lead to atrociously bad decision-making. The fact that Germany was able to make it to the finals without facing any serious contenders and based on Kahn's stellar performances alone is proving this point further. Sucks for him lo make one of the biggest mistakes in his entire career on this biggest stage possible.

Awesome video!!! A lot of people do not give enough credit to Scolari for this World Cup, especially in Brazil. As mentioned in the video he really is criticized (over the top in my opinion) because of his conservative and defending tactics, and of course his reputation was hugely damaged because of what happened under his command in Brazil 2014. The fact that this team had so much talent makes people often underestimate his role in this title campaign, as some people will still claim Brazil won it despite of the coach, but overview of everything Brazil went through before the title really show how important he was to the 5th.

They were not favored even though they had been the favorite in 1994 and 1998 and had reached the Final in both of those years. All the hype was saying they shouldn't be as much of a factor this year. Yet they won it all anyway and haven't won it all since. This video really helped shine light on why they weren't favored in 2002. As the World Cup progresses, I expected you to make a rewind of a Brazil-Germany matchup. But it was a pleasant surprise for you to bring this Brazil-Germany.
Footnote: That 2014 Brazil-Germany was pretty much a kind of sequel of this one, because, Brazil's football never really found itself since 2002 (maybe, only now in 2022) and Germany, which wasn't that good in 2002, made a readjustment in their football philosophy that led to that beatdown 12 years after.
However, Germans were quite smarter after 2014 and quitted the following 2 WCs in the Group Stage avoiding another sequel of this rivalry, bc Brazil, in our particular way, rebuilded the Seleção and bring back the roots that resulted in the 5 titles before, while Germany now is on the role of the team stuck in the past. So... maybe a Brazil-Germany in a knockout round nowadays could be pretty much a complete revenge of 2014

Playing for Chelsea who won the premier league last year, their team were not in contention to win after a poor season. However their London rivals Tottenham were the only team left that could beat Leicester for the title at the time, and hazard’s goal denied them a chance at winning their first PL. Leicester City winning the league is arguably the greatest accomplishment in sports history, they were 5000-1 to win the premier league and 3-1 to be relegated, and they won it all.

(Some examples: He tried to kung fu kick a Dortmund player, grabbed a Leverkusen player by the neck and scored a goal with his fists after a corner kick.) His reflexes were out of this world. Neuer is a better keeper when it comes to footballing skills and ruling over the penalty area, but on the line Kahn was the best keeper Germany ever had.
