David Beckham’s last-second free kick against Greece deserves a deep rewind
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 кві 2019
- It’s October 6th, 2001. We’re at Old Trafford in Manchester, England. Greece leads the Three Lions two-to-one in the 93rd minute, and has the opportunity to keep England from qualifying for the 2002 World Cup.
With David Beckham lining up for a free kick, the English National Team is looking for a miracle in the closing seconds. Make it and Beckham becomes a national hero just four years after effigies of the captain burned in the streets of England following the 1998 World Cup. Miss it and the British get to add a new chapter to their history of national team disappointment.
But how’d we get here? How’d England put themselves in position for possibly yet another heartbreak on a national level? How has a Greek team with nothing to play for nearly pulled this off? Before we get to a moment that will define English football - either through success or failure - we need to rewind.

Thanks for checking out this episode, and I apologize for the use of the term "British" in describing the English National Team. You see, I am just some simple, uncultured American. I definitely didn't live in Woking from 1995-1998 and I for sure didn't go to grade school in Egham or hang out at the Guilford Spectrum near my dad's office. I don't even know what those things are! Anyway, this is to say, my bad. I know better. I will be skipping tea today as punishment.

For any American out there, I can't tell you how emotional this is. I'm English, and it brings tears to my eyes and shivers down my spine whenever I watch this. This is what football is about. The beautiful game.
The closest emotional moment we have in football is probably Landon Donovan's stoppage time winner against Albania to send us to the round of 16 in 2010 or John Brooks stoppage time header to help us get revenge on Ghana in 2014. Not as good as Becks for sure but thats all we got lol

@@aaronsimmons1536 To be fair, if the Landon Donovan moment had happened to a country where soccer wasn't merely the 5th or 6th most popular sport, it would have dwarfed even the Beckham moment imo. You're talking about a goal that takes you from being eliminated, to topping the group and keeping your world cup dreams alive, rather than just qualifying. This was brilliantly made - thank you 💫 i remember this game so vividly; the free kick was a thing of the purest beauty.
I really enjoy these football rewinds! I hope you'll do more of them in the future! Tragically this also reminded me about how Finland has not made into a single world or European cup ever. Even with our ``golden genereation´´ that was at its peak in 01, we were left third. Maybe in 50 years, we can try to try again!

David Beckham's accuracy with free-kicks and frequency of scoring from distance made him world-class. I was glad to watch him play when his matches were on television.

what does elude your brain about the "deep rewind" format? it's one moment, one single action that changed the history of a match, or of a championship, not 10 minutes of play, one, single, moment

@@Moribax85 Maybe the magic seven minutes takes all the attention, but you can take Dudek's double save in extra time as the "Deep Rewind" point.
It's not just the Miracle of Istanbul itself, it's all the stuff that happened and/or would happened. I mean:
-Steven Gerrard, local hero, was about to sign with Chelsea _before_ the match. Had Liverpool lost miserably, wouldn't he keep on his move to London?
-As of 2019, Milan is a complete shitshow. Can we argue that losing in such a way was the beginning of the end (that also belongs to Collapse, but you understand the point: altering moment).

Constantly referring to the English national team as the British is a good way to rile up a few feathers, even though it's technically correct.
Its not correct at all. you have thoroughly riled my feathers
tmacman Britain is Scotland wales and England, therefore it’s wrong
@@ciarangrimes7912 In the way it's referred to, the English are British, so it's right. Why it would upset people, is that it is being said in a way that implies the English team represents the British, so in that way it's wrong. Hence the word "technically".
tmacman but it’s not technically correct, as referring to them as the “British national team” is wrong, as the England national team does not represent Britain. This is very obvious, as a Great Britain team exists in football, primarily when the olympics comes around

That was a really overdramatic presentation to be honest...
The group's runner-up's play-off game was against... Ukraine... Which at the time had an entirely unspectacular team.
Germany won the playoff with an aggregate score of 5-2. I have no doubts that England would have likely succeeded in it, even if they lost this game to Greece.
