I have been crocheting for 40 years, and the biggest issue I have with starting a new project is knowing how long to make the foundation chain. With this method it is so easy to see how long I need to make the project. Thank you for your clear instructions and helpful video!
This technique is so helpful. Thank you so much for making and uploading. I've been crocheting for over 40 years and made a few blankets in my time. This technique saves time on counting accurately how many chains to start with. I tend to mis-count after 50 chains. I am using this technique moving forward I just started a shawl that has a foundation chain of over 200 chains. I used the foundation double crochet and saved myself so much time, frustration and eye strain. I liked and commented because more chrocheters need to see this. ❤❤❤
Wow. Agree with many others. Years of chain replaced in a flash. Other video presentations of this were confusing and hard to manipulate. Easy.. straight forward… paced.. voice tone added clear caring tone.. simple to follow. Masterfully done!
Girl, I have heard of this chainless foundation soooo much but have never seen it shown so easy as you just did it. MIND BLOWN!!! WOW! Thank you soooo much! I can FINALLY do it in all those stitches. This is AWESOME!!! Thank you so much for making this so easy. Love it!!! 💕🥰💕
I’ve watched several videos on how to make these stitches. Your video is, by far, the best in making it clear what to do. You are a very good teacher. Thank you!
I am a very experienced knitter with basic crochet skills. That foundation chain with many stitches is the hardest part of the whole process in my mind. I am making a shawl and have been redoing a chain of 200 stitches over and over for days now and once I was able to get a decent looking untwisted chain, I found it to be too tight for the fabric. This is brilliant! It’s easy to do and it’s easy to count the stitches you have. Not sure why this isn’t the standard way of doing things. It will be my go to for all projects. As a knitter, I also appreciate your “knotless” start. I’ll be using that technique as well. This is a great tutorial- clear, slow, concise and no background music. Thank you!!
FANTASTIC! I wish I knew of this technique 50 years ago. What an easy method to correct a MAJOR PROBLEM in all those thousands of foundation chain patterns. You have a perfect calm voice and explain very clearly and slowly so everyone can grasp this “new” method. I can’t even begin to thank you enough.
YOU ARE THE BEST!!!. I've been crocheting for more years that I really want to say.....and you know..."You can teach an old dog new tricks!!!" I've watch more than 6 different video on how to start my work without a foundation chain and as hard as I tried couldn't get it to give me a smooth bottom finish....then you came along.....Eureka!!! you're the best....Thank you!
I love the no foundation stitch for starting clothing and blanket projects. The stretch makes such a big difference in the look of the finished item. Thank you for this great video showing the steps in detail.
love this technique, where was this all my crocheting life? 57 years doing it, love your chainless fd st for side and the invisible slip stitch. Thank-you very much for sharing this infomation we us!!!!
your timing is perfect this was exactly the video I needed right now. It was hard to see the lighter yarns.. Can I suggest putting a towel or sheet over your work area when using yarn the same color as your table.
I have struggled with this for so long, this is the one tutorial that really helped me master it. Describing where to insert hook as the “bottom of the last stitch” really clinched it for me....Thanks!
I agree with everyone else... you're very good at teaching this and I wished I'd seen this earlier cuz I made a mess of my first project. Will do this always from now on.
So glad I discovered your site today!! I’ve started crocheting again this fall after minimal exposure to crochet pre 1975, basically only made book markers. You explain the Foundation + SC, F + 1/2DC, etc., sea well I am going to finally brave this newer, seemingly better beginning to projects. Looking forward to exploring all your videos and tutorials.
i have been crocheting since i was a little girl, and i want too thank you for this newest form of chaining, i am so glad i will be using it now, it will go by so faster than what i have been doing, thank you.
This is the best tutorial I have seen on doing the foundation stitches. I have gone through a lot of "tutorials" and been totally confused as to which stitch I should be working in but your explanation of turning the row upside down makes a lot of sense and has helped me tremendously! I have been crocheting for many, many years and always done my chains the original way but have always wanted to try this method. Kudos, my dear, to a wonderful tutorial!
OMG!!! 😮This is pure genius!! 💥 Thank you, thank you, thank YOU so very much for posting this tutorial. I'm so excited to try this stitch now. This technique will totally change and improve everything I crochet from now on! God bless you! 🙏🏾
Thank you so much for this video. I tried looking at other videos, but they did not turn the work upside down like you did so it looked like they were putting the needle into the side stitch of the work instead of the bottom. This video really helped me to master this technique. I was always coming up with the wrong number on my second row and I would have to start all over again. I think the first and second rows are the hardest because you have to make your stitches are even on the first row and it is easy to miss a stitch on the second row. Especially when you are using multicolored yarn. This solves that problem. Now I just have to count my stitches to make sure I have the correct number on both rows. and both rows will be uniform. This is great!!!
Thanks for this 4 in 1 video tutorial. I'm back to crochet after a few years of being away, and before that I was a novice anyway. Right away when I started up doing crochet, being taught by generous people like you on UA-cam, I was doing chainless foundations and turns. It's so much better. Thanks and subscribed!
Thank you so very much for taking the time to teach this foundation crochet method to all of us who were having a little trouble catching on to it. I am a visual learner and you do a magnificent job of showing exactly how something is done. Also, your voice is very pleasant and encouraging, as well as comforting to listen to. I’m fairly new to your channel but I’m so thankful to have found you and now I plan to watch all of your wonderful videos with hopes of gaining far more knowledge of this new (to me) and amazing art form called Crochet. Thanks again and please stay safe throughout these difficult times in which we presently live. Shay Shaffer....💗🧶
So well shown and explained! This is the best tutorial on this technique I've found. Thank you so much for taking the time to film the technique and the reasons to do what you do. You made so easy to understand the concept so it is a breeze to just transfer that to the rest of the basic stiches. I can't thank you enough!! Now I won't avoid projects that ask for a very long chain to start. God bless you!! 😇🙏❤
This was very well presented and easy to follow. I appreciate the time stamps AND the free ''cheat sheet''. Thanks so much for sharing this valuable method!
These foundation chains have been around FOREVER. For the life of me I don't know why they keep publishing new patterns with the "old" method. These always always work better and look so much nicer on the finished project. Thanks for spreading the word! Nice job
THANK you for this tutorial. I have struggled with this concept and now "get" it! Yayyy! 😘 It also saves time and the dreaded "putting the first row in the chain" is done away with!
Oh my gosh. I was never going to try this, but I'm making a sweater pattern of yours. I'm over 60, so I don't like to try many new things 😅. Thanks for this great video.
OMG! This has been an issue for me ! Thank you so so much for this video. Very clear and very very helpful . The only issue I had with the video is the back ground was to light with the lighter color yarn. Other than that , you're an excellent teacher ! Again Thank You !
You make this so easy to follow along with you. I love how easy the stitch is and how it make the starting row look better than the regular foundation row. I subscribed and clicked the bell to watch your new videos.
Thank you, I'm is excited, my foundation chains get so tight they are the most frustrating part of crocheting for me, and the most unattractive part of my work so far. Im a newbie. You explained this so well I can do it. I need to find out how you start your chains it does not look like you start them with a slip knot.
You are fantastic, I have watched several and yours is the best, I have been able to do it since I watched yours and now I know the reason why, I did not know why the pattern called for it because it never said why, thank you oh so much.
You are fabulous!!! This is my missing link ❤️❤️❤️ I hate foundation chains with a passion. This is why I’ve not been enjoying my crochet as much as I can. I’m okay with it as long as I can overcome the stupid foundation chain. You have saved my enjoyment. Thank you 😊 for your wonderful help and your marvelous teaching 🙏🙏
@@YayForYarn I should also mention that as well. I watched videos of it before but your tutorial explained it best. What I really liked is that you mentioned that the chain part isn't tight on the bottom.. that is helpful bc doing a regular chain first sometimes makes that rainbow shape at the bottom. Thanks again!
I totally love this. Yes I am one that’s been crocheting for decades, and was always frustrated with that foundation chain being kind of tight as I’m learning this stitch I noticed it starts to become a curve if I wonder what I’m doing wrong.
The natural tendency of this stitch is to curve very slightly. Give it a stretch and see if it straightens out. If it does not, then the loop you are pulling up from the base of the previous stitch might be too short. So when you insert your hook into the base of the previous stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, try stretching that loop a little longer to loosen it. That should help with the curving. I hope this helps!
I have some more tipps: with this technique all stitch-hights are possible for sample quedruple croshet: start with chain five for the hight. wrap the yarn three times around your hook, then skip four chain-stitches, beginning at the hook and pull a loop through the last one. Now you should have four loopa on your hook. like the others pull a new loop through one at first and then this time three times one new loop through two, to reach one loop on your hook again. the other stitches to compleete the row are just the same, just go through the stitch at the bottom, as shown in the vide, after wrapping the yarn oround the hook. Higher stitches = longer chain at the begining, more rounds of wrapping the yarn around the hook and more steps of looping through to reach one loop on the hook again. You also can make a connected version of doube, thriple or quadruple crochets in this technique: start with the little chain for the hight as usoal. but now skip only the first stitch from the hook and pull loops through all others to get the needed number of loops on your hook. the rest of the first stitch goes as shown here. for all other stitches in the row: for double crochet, you will find one hole in the front to pull the first loop through and then one through the bottom stitch as shown. for thriple, you should find two and for quadruple, you should find three of theese holes there to pull loops through. this replaces wrapping the yarn around the hook and the stitches appear compacter.
This is very helpful technique but one point to the video, if you use the yarn with more color on the first one instead of pale blue it would be more visible and easier to follow. Thanks for the tips.
Wow, I love it! This is exactly what I needed but hadn't yet seen when I made my velvet mittens. It's so hard to get them over my hands though I can manage with some effort :( Now I'm ready mentally to try another. First I'm going to crochet a velvet scarf for my daughter and would love using this for it too. THANKS!!
Total newbie to knitting and crocheting here, thanks to your video I just caught on that the base of the crotchet hook sizes your loop and not the head of the hook. My work is far from looking as even and professional as yours but I can at least now start to see a even pattern..ya I'm a goof.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! And yes, the shaft of the hook (straight part between the hook tip and the handle) is what determines the size of your loop.
Your instructions are great, but I was still having so much trouble getting the bottom edge and the top edge even - the bottom stitches were much tighter than the top :-/ But then I spent some more time watching exactly what your left thumb and middle finger were doing, and what part of the stitch they were holding in place, and saw that when you were ready for the final pull-through, you switched to only holding the top edge of the loop below, pulling it a little leftward as you finished the stitch. That did the trick!
Thank you so much for this tutorial; I have been trying to learn for so long. Also, thanks for the wonderful Cheat Sheet that's available on your site. Again, thanks!
There's a free printable cheat sheet available on my blog, with a full photo tutorial of all four foundation stitches. You can get it for free by signing up for my email list here: mailchi.mp/65ae63235467/tvc276z6nl Hope this helps!
Thank you so much! I have watched numerous other videos to understand this but it never clicked. The way you explain to turn it over to see the bottom stitch makes it so easy. I've shared your video for the invisible join when changing colors several times.

Thanks for the clear instructions. I’ve just done the HDC version and very pleased with it. Thanks for being so kind as to share with the world.

This is a superb technique. Ty so much for demonstrating this easy and much improved method of doing the foundation row

You're an excellent teacher. Thanks so much.
I have some more tipps:
with this technique all stitch-hights are possible
for sample quedruple croshet:
start with chain five for the hight.
wrap the yarn three times around your hook, then skip four chain-stitches, beginning at the hook and pull a loop through the last one.
You also can make a connected version of doube, thriple or quadruple crochets in this technique:
start with the little chain for the hight as usoal.
but now skip only the first stitch from the hook and pull loops through all others to get the needed number of loops on your hook.
the rest of the first stitch goes as shown here.
for all other stitches in the row:
for double crochet, you will find one hole in the front to pull the first loop through and then one through the bottom stitch as shown.
for thriple, you should find two and for quadruple, you should find three of theese holes there to pull loops through.
this replaces wrapping the yarn around the hook and the stitches appear compacter.
This is very helpful technique but one point to the video, if you use the yarn with more color on the first one instead of pale blue it would be more visible and easier to follow. Thanks for the tips.
You are very good at this. Your version is also possible for tunisian crochet. Just don't pull trough the LAST loop
I love this! So much easier and you explained it beautifully. Thank you!
Oh my goodness you have made this sooooo easy for me. A big huge thank you
This is my 6th video and the best🤗by far! Thanks!

You're welcome, Donna! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
This is amazing!!!! Finally a video that helps me get it ☺️thank you. Great work!
thank you for your time. God bless you.
Thank you! This will make a much neater/firmer edge for some gloves I’m going to be making for stocking stuffers! New sub here!

Thank you so much and yes I believe your right! I so love the stitches ❣️❣️❣️
Thank you for posting this video its very helpful and I think I can now use the foundation stitches :)
You are Wonderful! Thanks for sharing your fabulous Techniques 😊 🙏 🇺🇸
This has been a blessing!! Thank you so much for sharing!!
Your instructions are great, but I was still having so much trouble getting the bottom edge and the top edge even - the bottom stitches were much tighter than the top :-/
But then I spent some more time watching exactly what your left thumb and middle finger were doing, and what part of the stitch they were holding in place, and saw that when you were ready for the final pull-through, you switched to only holding the top edge of the loop below, pulling it a little leftward as you finished the stitch.
That did the trick!
Your voice reminds me of Melissa Gilbert! I love it!
Brilliant!!! I make a lot of crochet blankets and I'm going to be using this alot
Thank you! I hope you find it helpful in your projects!
Thank you for sharing. It makes the foundation neat (for me) and easy to work into.

Thank you for this great tutorial! 💗 I just found your Cowl Neck Tee on Ravlry, 😍 and now I'm a new subscriber to your channel! ✌😎
Thank you so much! I have watched numerous other videos to understand this but it never clicked. The way you explain to turn it over to see the bottom stitch makes it so easy. I've shared your video for the invisible join when changing colors several times.
