Just picked up a Spyderco sage in rex -121....super stoked!
This is my favorite video you made. Good job Pete.
❤️
I love your cut test, you deserve more than the 10k subscribers you have right now. I hope people start to realize the test you're doing is more accurate than most others.
Spyderco is comparable to a fine restaurant. Sure you could go somewhere where all they have is burgers and fries and maybe they "switch it up" and have fish on the menu for a week.
But Spyderco is like that restaurant with 30 different entrees, 3 daily Specials(sprints) and 6 different appetizers (mules) and even give you delicious buns to munch on before you eat (the little paper you read describing the knife and its steel and why its special). Its my favorite knife company.
I just wanted to say thanks in being one of the channels that pushed me over the edge to start making videos, I had been contemplating making a knife related channel for almost a year and just started so thanks, not just to you but to the knife community in general. You guys are awesome.
@FlamQ Dbltap ...only at Benchmade
You are the man, I am pretty sure stone washing closes or seals the pores of the steel. Doug Ritter went for stone washing on his knives for that reason..... or si I heard. I could be wrong but I’ve always understood that was a benefit of stonewashing. Makes the Rex 121 stand out even more
I like the car top speed analogy. Great video Pete, enjoyed!

spyderco sage coming soon.. cant wait
I’m not a huge knife person, but I love the look of the Creely blades. Would love a set of the kitchen knives, they look great!
I’m honestly quite surprised that Rex 121 hasn’t had any significant toughness issues
I have a Lansky diamond system. I just bought the KME and it changed everything. Sharpening is fun again. The KME system is great for harder steels. You just need th 50 and 100 grit stones.
Mike Gregerick yeah I need to upgrade to a KME. I groan Everytime I have to pull out the Lansky for any steel tougher than 154 cm.
Aaron cammon The KME is fantantic. It has improved my sharpening greatly. You do need a few add ons to get great results like the 50 and 100 stones and either the emulsions or lapping film for polished edges but it was the right choice for me. Best results for the money. Knifekrazy has great videos.
good job, your production is maturing, keep it up.
I love your opinion on the answer to sharpenability 😂😂😂 made me laugh really hard! Love your videos Pete!
That's super impressive and we enjoyed the shared knowledge I nerd out on this stuff it makes the wheels in my brain go around thinking about metallurgy searching for that perfect Steel it appeals to that Hunter gatherer side of my brain the part that wants to work smarter not harder so yeah it makes sense why use crap steel if you don't have to unless you're using your knives to open up cans and things like that you would want to steal that you'd be able to re-sharpen fairly easily but a good knife is a tool and it's worth taking care of it would be nice to own a knife made with the super steel someday.
Thanks for the video Pete
Very impressive blade. And at the site I discovered they have an LC200Nversion as well, which suits me even better for EDC.
I used to be a big fan of stropping too. But the problem with stropping is, whilst it can sort of restore the edge quickly, it'll never be the proper aggressive edge that was there originally. Yeah, the knife will fly through paper and shave hair but try cutting a wrinkly tomato, chicken or fish (especially with skin on them). It's just not going to perform well. Those stropped edges are simply over-polished and, after some time of repeated stropping, rounded off and tend to skid over the surface rather than cut into certain materials, which is very annoying when you have work to do.
Agree. I've gone with "toothy" edges for kitchen knives and general purpose EDC. Will cut smooth/slippery and rough surfaces. I love the look of a polished edge, but seems to have less utility.
You need to strop with 5 micron diamond spray then, and stop using so much pressure. My edges are incredibly aggressive even after stropping.
I use 0.5 micron diamond paste on a flat wooden board. No leather. It seems to work better in certain scenarios. But usually only after proper sharpening to finish it up and get rid of the bur. Leather with compounds rounds off edges like crazy. I suppose 5 microns is much rougher and could be even better for aggressive edges. Not sure if I'd classify it as stropping/polishing. Seems more like touching up on a very fine diamond or honing.
I never use too much pressure when stropping. That would ruin the edge instantly. Recently I've only been doing 2-4 super gentle passes per side after rough sharpening to get rid of the micro bur.
I wish I cared about steel as much as you do Pete, for me it's all about design and edge geometry
Nolan Carpenter would you care if you had a aluminum knife with the best design jk that would suck
Impressed by your comments, because few others have the practical experiences behind the comments. Now a suggestion for the opposite side of the coin. You’ve done the Mora Garberg, but how does a standard Mora Companion blade compare to others on your extensive list? It is the best-known basic blade model that most folks know. (Or is it on your separate Scandi-blade list that I cannot find anymore?)
I really like this design. My only reservation is that heel of material that sticks down after the plunge grind. Seems like that would prevent using the full edge on a flat surface similar to many flipper tabs on folders. It's probably there for sheath retention so if it's good enough for Pete, it's good enough for me.
Chris Allison That is a little integrated guard so that you don’t slide up on the blade.
Understood and thanks for the clarification. I just ordered one from your site.
Love your videos, love the steel comparisons. I still wonder how people got along when there was only the 10series and the 440series to choose from. (Just kidding on that....or am I?)
I do have one Supersteel knife (in s30v) and am very disappointed in it. I cut wood, not rope, and seasoned hardwood at that. It doesn't hold up any better than my other cheaper steeled knifes. Although no scientific testing done. I tend to think there's too much hoopla (and increased price) with these new steels, with questionable improvements.
Sharpening REX121 is a circle of Hell
I Once Got A Cheap Tungsten Carbide Planer Blade, Botched a Handle With The Hot Glue Gun :-))) It Worked Great For The Muddy Hay Bales Until I Got The Carbide Coated Stanley Blades!!! Cheap Blades Do Vary In Carbide Grain Size, Quality and Cobalt Content.
Great Content Pete!!! The King Of The CeraMetals :-)))
I can’t justify carrying a fixed blade on a daily basis (doctor so basically Office/hospital drone), but I would love to try out a folder in this... although I wonder if it would chip from repeated opening and closing (hitting lock bar, stop pin, etc). Maybe using an axis type lock would work better?
No, it is a blade steel issue, not the lock up
Hey I wonder what REX-121 knife would be like if some company was to use the B.O.S. heat treatment with it?????☺😀😃
Lol
Follow your heart! Yes!
Where do big knifemakers get this cobalt steel from anyway? I only have access to spring steel, 1095, regular tool steel, pre-made Damascus and VG10.
Small guys can go to Alpha Knife supply. Big guys go to the actual suppliers, so probably Niagra Speciality Metals, Damasteel, and others.
Incredible hi-tec steel... what do we do with such and awe-inspiring metal...
Cut dog food bags, cut freezer bags...
Hey Pete just checking your videos and I couldn't find any on Rex 76, have you tested it? If so what's your experience on this steele? Thanks for sharing your videos!
update, sharpening my rex 121 sage 5 while watching this. things really have changed.
Love your cardboard-box🤣...
Any idea on how this compares to Rex 45 on the upcoming paramilitary 2’s?
rex 45 is very similar in makeup to Hap40, just the Crucible version of it with a few little mods or changes. would be high tungsten partially stainless type stuff. good on edge retention, may patina it not laminated
Would Hap40 be less stainless and tough than cruwear? Deciding on these 2 Steels for my edc. Appreciate your time and keep up the awesome work!
@@CedricAda Hey what would be the beat steel for a samurai sword, for lots of cutting? Please I am curious what you would suggest.
Excellent review... made me a subscriber.. thankyou!
What's your take on S110V vs 20CV vs Maxamet in terms of chippiness and ease of sharpening? I was looking at getting a knife in one of these and was wondering which is worse?
Eff the Rex121... What are those beauts in the knife block behind you?!? You hold'n out on us?!? Where's the rest of them... in the dishwasher?!? Top rack I hope, that's where I put all my nice kitchen knives!
That blade is beautiful. I wish I could afford it. I would love to own one.
Mike Gregerick What blade?
Dan DeMarco Creely Mako in REX121
Spyderco is having alot of problems with maxamet and have discontinued the maxamet pm2 right now and small run for the para3 so far. Sal doesn't know the future holds for it because it's getting expensive for the factory to make them. Get them now if you want them. But hopefully there production problems get sorted out. I doubt they'll use rex121 due to these issues with maxamet. But we'll see.
Tactical Center really?? Cuz I have a Para 3 in MAXAMET on pre-order. Where did you hear this!? Hope he gets it sorted.
Aaron cammon the para3 hasn't been discontinued yet. The pm2 Sal said its a muttha to work with. Well see. He said this both on bladeforums and spyderco forums.
It would have to be expensive to manufacture. Given the difficulty I assume, the Maxamet Sydies seem like bargains. I can only hope Spyderco would make a Rex 121 knife.
Aaron cammon I just found out that pre orders were ignored for the 5 knives they got in for a few retailers. They sold out within 5mins. They should have a larger batch coming in a couple of weeks. No exact eta was givin. So I suppose you may get one then.
Tactical Center thanks for the info!
Not sure if you've seen this Pete (you probably have). Thought you'd be interested in the breakdown. It's a tool steel for high end stuff: www.crucible.com/eselector/prodbyapp/highspeed/cpm121.html
...but in the end (Linkin Park playing), it actually got quite sharp. Lol Great vid man.
Can’t carry without getting someone upset.
Yeah. We have a lot of FeralKarens here, too.
I've started using a Dremel-style rotary tool with a set of little diamond wheels and bits (all reasonably priced at HFT). I like it. Very versatile and useful.
Best to practice first on inexpensive blades a few times, to develop a little skill and finesse. Not hard, just takes a small bit of practice.
LOL, that answers my question about getting a Gill Hibben level of size and polish in a "good" steel. aint gonna happen.
Follow your heart, cracked me up
Why would UA-cam unsubscribe me?
They do it all the time
Hyper steel confirmed new term
I love that knife .
little woody What knife?
Does he make fixed blades in lc200n if so I think that would be a great edc fixed blade
he sure does, check out his work - creely blades
You should do vanax
I have some vanax on hand and certainly will
You earned a like just for that linkin park part ;)
I think that cardboard box was full of Froglube.
Really a bummer you can't carry around an edc. Knife laws in California and in Nevada too don't make any sense.
Have you ever had to bust out One Winged Angel for a knife?
Sound The most important thing in video except script
Is that even steel? It's only a little more than half iron.
I thought we had reached a ceiling with Maxamet. Another great review. Thanks for all the hard work! This is one of the best knife channels on UA-cam. (check out my tiny channel if you have a minute to kill).
Video request for Bro-Science - testing of steel boners lol!!
What about keenness broski? Isn't the most important aspect of any knife to be sharp? So any knife steel should be able to take a very keen edge, razors edge. If a steel was unable to take a very keen edge, it would not be a good steel for a knife, no matter how well it did in terms of.... toughness, corrosion, edge retention. Kinda like classic D2 imo. It won't take a keen edge but by golly it'll hold it's crappy edge forever! Somehow marketers convinced people this is desirable. The Japanese puke at this. That's why I love all the Japanese cutlery grade steels, if a steel wont get razor sharp, the Japanese wont use it for cutlery. Cuz I mean that's the whole point of a knife, isn't it? To get really sharp and cut shit. Just my 1.5-2.5 cents.
My friend Ben sells cutting tools and maintenance equipment on his website baryonyxknife.com and sells very affordable sharpening stones that can match the beast. He is on UA-cam, as well. Check him out.
azraelsblade his stones are great but not for rex121. He would need to have diamond or cbn for this steel.
Cool little knife, but with that much effort they could make a pure tungsten carbide blade, lets quit ice fucking and go all the way.
Don Pepe What knife?
99% of America is the same way. If you go walking into work with a knife on your hip... You'd better be on a construction site of something. NOT an office.
The in pocket sheath is actually very subtle, I wear it everywhere I go including church.
Not in my part of America. Sounds like your in the city. Basically not American the way I see it. Sure maybe not into work unless the job calls for it. The state of Michigan allows me to open or conceal carry a hunting knife of any length basically anywhere I could carry a gun
M B same story in NZ it's against the law unless you can prove it's for work, hunting etc.
I think wearing a knife outside the pocket will get you stopped by the police most cities in the U.S. Probably not in rural areas, or parts of Texas, Alaska, Wyoming, Montana (maybe a few other places as well). It's legal to carry a non-concealed handgun in Portland, Oregon. Doing so will almost certainly get you a dramatic sequence of events followed by a free ride to the police station. Legal and ok are not necessarily the same thing.
I've lived in half a dozen states and spent time in at least 40 out of the 50 on business. Wearing even a leatherman sheath on your belt will get you odd looks half the time. Lived in MI myself now for about 18 years. And it's no different.
Why do you endanger your health? It is not good to use the knife like that. You carve too close to the leg, to the femoral artery. Otherwise good video. Good job!
Cool but the limited production makes me say a firm NO for that steel.
