I bought one of these because I was sick of the clinical digital sound of the ua Apollo. It was a great preamp but just didn’t make me “feel” it, it just felt way too…. Idk. Bought the volt with 4 inputs and 4 outputs, and I currently use it in my studio with a Roswell mini k67 and it sounds FANTASTIC. The added benefit of the vintage drive and compressors is that you can actually route your entire stereo mix through this hardware with the drive and compressor ON, and print out your entire mix through it. I’ve gotten some amazing results just using this interface as an outboard compressor/drive/mastering box and it gives surprisingly juicy results. To be clear, I sold my two THOUSAND dollar interface to trade it for this and I’ve never once regretted my decision. This interface frickin ROCKS.
I know I’m late… by about 3 years… but just needed to say that’s the most beautiful version of In Your Eyes I’ve ever heard (apart from, of course, the original). Thanks. I usually listen to maybe 20s of most gear demo pieces, but this time I stopped to take in the whole thing. Great job everyone.
Really looking forward to checking out the Volt series. As you said, I'm keen to see what the compressor does to the signal. The audio samples sound really great!
Hi Julian, I really wanted you to get this in advance and test it! However I got it Thursday morning and only had to for one day before I had to send it back!
I got so in to the song, i forgot we were testing out an audio interface. The song is amazing and the recording is too. I'm not sure how much of it's down to the interface or your skills, but damn! That was good!.
First and foremost: Katie is a marvelous singer and musician! What I consider great with the UA Volt interfaces is, that they encourage you to commit during recording. In many cases, the initial and most intuitive decision is one of the best decisions, in contrast to repetitive tweaking, which often may not provide better or more intriguing results. My primary interface is a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 (2nd gen), I also use a Behringer UMC204HD (whose preamps aren't bad either) and sometimes I use an older Yamaha mixer (MG12/4FX) in front of the interface.
The grey face plate on the 276 reminds me of the Studer Revox audio face plates from the 70's. Now that was a recording machine, Revox, 2 inch 24 tracks of warm analog heaven.
That convo at around 10:44, about the older days-of a committed workflow with compression-to-tape, it reminds me of a humble argument I once had with an audio teacher, contesting the usefulness of destructive editing in a DAW, to the non-destructive regiment of modernizing updates and the like. I felt there's a similar principle in the mindset of commitment to the sound early-on that relied less on experimentation post-record, and more on the singular practices of "getting there" with less to fuss-with, less to troubleshoot when things get too diminished. Like how the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. I'm grateful to see top-tier companies advocating simplicity in their gear designs. I don't see pitfalls of mediocrity in committing-to better sound early on. I see a shorter, straight line to the goal and the suggestive framework for a simpler studio mentality to get things done... Although there IS the legendary horror story of the TV/VCR combo; if either one goes, you lose both to get it fixed. Is that IN-THE-BOX braintalk or "thinking outside the box?" :D OMG what-if THERE IS NO BOX??
Ethan Weiner would love this. It's a great example of not having to spend big dollars to get expensive sounding tracks even before any post. Tracks like this makes mixing so much of a pleasure. Great demo warren.
I own the VOLT276. I went in to buy the ID4, but it was out of stock. Now I can't comment on the ID4, but I'm more than happy with the VOLT. So simple, such great design makes it a pleasure to work with. I think sound quality wise the two are probably indistinguishable, but having the compressors at your fingertips is great feature. They can both power the SM7B, which was my primary reason for upgrading from my old Steinberg interface. Thanks so much for this brief overview. I will start driving the compressor a little harder :) And thanks for the track download! I love this song and will build my own version over the drum tracks...

Blair is a great guy. He did drums for my band, The Leeds, several years ago in his backyard studio in Burbank. Probably the most professional drummer I’ve ever dealt with. And I was amazed how fast he tracked everything. I believe we had him do about 8 or 9 songs for our record…. It was the only time I had the pleasure to meet and work with him, and I still remember how simple he was to work with and how talented he is.
@@Producelikeapro What's funny is we had to sneak to Burbank from Vegas to have him do the tracks without pur drummer knowing. We literally used all of Blairs work on the record and not 1 note was from our actual drummer lol. That's how much we liked Blairs work. Our drummer was less happy than the rest of us. 😱 And to this day, whenever I listen to that record, which is maybe once every couple years, I'm still in love with what Blair did and his tones. Looking at this for a first one for an eventual tiny home studio, sounds amazing for the price, and this video elucidated it in a brilliant way. Awesome! Makes me wanna buy it even more
This girls voice is pure heaven. Awesome track and immaculate guitar playing. Props to the drummer also, his brush play was absolutely sublime! I think I’ll be checking a whole lot more of her stuff. Great find, cheers Warren 🥂
We live in spoiled times. I'm amazed at the CD quality performances of non chart talent all over youtube. Pristine recordings with $300 interfaces. I recently got a motu m4 I'm very happy with since I don't input record that often. This thing is going to sell like hotcakes and make the playing field even more level for gear that gives you a polished professional studio sound for very little money. The recording you did here, CD release quality to normal folks easy.
I like very much that we see a small bust of Ludwig Von Beethoven (hopefully everyone is listening to this man's work?) on the studio furniture, and also seeing inexpensive sound treatment which we all could well use like bed sheets, or hand built gobos. I wound up getting a UA 276 to replace an older Focusrite interface which still worked well, but was having some compatibility strains around newer software (e.g. Cubase 13). Also nice that you do the most simple, effective and inexpensive thing to rid yourself of drum bleed - just record the kick drum alone, then bring in the rest. Totally clever, and a great way to achieve sound as you need, all without running out and buying some stupidly expensive new mic, which you have no experience with. I'm following now for a while and can see this is a valuable channel to learn practical audio engineering and more around commercial music production.
Reminds me of the old dbx 160 vu. With the wood side panels. I have a ua x8p, A8,an 8p and apollo 16. Plus an apollo twin duo for some remote overdubs. Got hooked on ua products in 2010, since then sold my 2 inch otari, mixer and racks of outboard gear I’ve accumulated since the 70s. Thank you UA!
Great video. No rambling about specs. Just a beauty with a great voice and two musical dudes using the interface to make some great music. GREAT JOB! 🙂
I love my audient id4 very much, and I treat it like analogue in the digital world. I record straight to my daw through an input aux track that has a gate, an arturia 1973 and a softube Cl1B. Everyone thinks I track analogue, or in fancy rooms, and it's literally all digital. I don't even know why anyone would pay UAD's apollo systems anymore, with todays ssd's being so fast, anyone with a half decent laptop/desktop can do it the way I do.
I like the concept of the UA Volt. I just wish they made a bigger rack mounted version as well. Like an 8 mic pre version with more outputs. Kinda like the Scarlett series ranging from solo-18i20. It's obvious that UA is trying to compete with the more affordable lines of interfaces with the Volt series like the Scarletts, Moto M series, Audient D series , etc, but if they extended the range to more i/o then they would really have the upper hand. The Apollo series is obviously their big interfaces, but its not in the affordable price range. i could see an affordable larger interface by UA to sell like hot cakes. I know i would buy one.
Thank you for reviewing this interface. I use an UA Arrow (now Apollo Solo) and I love it. I bought it for the reasons you mention: quality at an affordable price. The Volt seems to be even more affordable without loosing quality!
As soon as i heard this was coming out I was waiting for your good self to review it.I knew you were going to like it straight away as have many on here.As they say it's a "no brainer",well for me anyway as i love 70's stuff, lol.Great work from you and the musicians, what a lovely voice.
Quad 405 amp and NS10 monitors… surprisingly decent combo ;) Looks like a decent bit of kit and being able to record through compression in a home studio environment without latency or breaking the bank is awesome!
Great video… as usual. I’m just building my home studio from the ground up. I saw this as I was researching affordable interfaces. After watching this, my mind is made up. The warm analogue sound is exactly what I’m after. Loved this video format. Well done, bravo. Keep them coming and thank you.
I think the increased workflow and spontaneity of being able to add or take away the settings in real time on the preamp is excellent. Only thing is I wish it had a better IO, very limiting if you already have any sort of interface. Although you can use it as an added preamp for some colour at that pricepoint. Great video Warren! Always fun to watch, i forgot how badass that song is
This probably wasn't the intention of your video, but now I feel the urge to turn up those speakers and listen to the absolute incredible Secret World Live version of In Your Eyes. It's been a while. Thanks!
I love the way companies will push the technology forward for the cleanest noise free pre's and yet will still roll back to the vintage musical sounds. This interface sounds great.
This is the review/run through that I’ve been looking for, thank you! As someone who gets inspired at 11 PM and will grab my laptop (or iPad), my interface, and mic to go record vocals in a random place and I think this is perfect for me to do that with. I have the 427 in my cart for pre-order from Sweetwater right now... I think I need to select checkout. Ha Ha.
Great video. A wonderful recording of a beautiful song. This interface is able to capture great performances so nicely. Thank you for showcasing it, Warren
Despite not being functional with their plugins, it definitely works as a new line and series of interfaces from them! This looks to be a serious contender for something special. Sounds "musical" as you said!
Nice device and what a great song. Awesome performance. I actually just received my Audient Sono 1 month ago. Since I'm a guitarist (from origin...) it makes more sense to me. It's a great practice device as well with all the emulations, and of course the tube pre-amp makes it really nice together with my pedals.
Such a beautiful performance, you guys! This affordable, portable device delivered great sound and it didn't get in the way of the creative moment which is where I think it really shines. I imagine UA had that in mind and based on what I see and hear, they hit it out of the park!
Thank You so much for this....very inspirational! I am trying to teach myself some rudimental recording so I can record my kids as they practise their high-school music. I have an old Avid Mbox, a small collection of chinese knock-off mikes and am using Garageband while I try to teach myself Reaper. This really gives a feel for what is possible on a reasonable budget (except talent will always be lacking!). This also hits home the old adage where art decorates/transcends space while music decorates/transcends time, hearing this cover was like bumping into an old friend....you end up on the verge of tears for no reason!! Beautiful Job!
Great review, great performances, and great product demo! I’ll admit I really underestimated this interface, I’ve been looking for a portable USB interface and this just moved near the top of the list, thanks Warren!
I just ordered this Volt 267 from Thomann. I cant wait to use the built in comp. I LOVE recording with the 1176 plug-in. But having it IN, is a no brainer for me. Best regards Thank you so much for this video, it really made my decision even easier, My forusrite Scarlett is going out. This is going in :)
Super excited to see this! I pre-ordered the 476 as soon as I saw it! Hopefully, I get it soon! :D I'm one of those old guys you mention lol! hahahahahaha.... I think you hit the nail right on the head! I'm a pro engineer. I was attracted by the ease of use and totally differnt sound. I'm always looking for ways to bring different sounds into the studio. :D
Hey , everybody. Don't know if this has been discussed. First, thanks to Warren for this effort and demonstration and to to all the other wonderful musicians. Making the tracks available is such a beautiful service. Actually for the manufacturer , too. What do in know, but it's a shame universal audio doesn't send you a test unit. Well. Let's not discuss strange business decisions here. My question is: Does anyone else here notice the artifact on the vocal tracks? Or at least on the BV_01 Track I can clearly hear it. It's rather low level .Not sure about the others. You have to turn it up. But at the end of each sung word there is some weird "ring" at the end. It's clearly an artifact to me. Is this the compressor of the interface. I don't hear it. On anything else and one might easily overhear it in a full mix. I just wanted to know, if anyone else noticed this. Cheers!
Thanks for taking the time to record with this. I think the 476 almost works for my B studio. However the Mic inputs being on the front (instead of the back) might blow it for this particular setup. :^(
This is exactly the type of video I needed for this product. Thanks so much for doing what you do Warren! I absolutely love the minimalist approach to this recording. So practical and tasteful. Exactly what the song called for IMO.. You're right they will sell a lot of these. Think about the "working" musicians out there who are a bit tech savvy, highly creative, but don't have a lot of money to invest in quality gear. Most people with an ear can really hear it when a sound is right. When the bass drum hit for the first time in this song, I was blown away by the sheer body and depth it had. It was impressive. After seeing the setup, I was pretty sold on the mic pre/comp sound quality from this device. It seems like a solid option for the Musician's out there interested in recording themselves on a budget. I just wish more people did this type of review.. Bravo!
Wow... I think it sounds really good! Seems to have the warmth and perceived fatness of analog equipment. I'm currently using an Apogee Element 24 with a Golden Age Pre 73 mkIII thru an FMR RNC1773 compressor. I've been running a Telefunken TF11 thru this setup while "committing to tape" and it seems to be working out so far. Long time fan of your content Warren. Cheers!
Such a great video. Loved the inside look into the process too. From mic placement experimentation on the drums to DAW views. Also noticed the grid is nowhere lined with the wave files. The way it should be, humans making music not shooting for perfection. I just bought this interface and really enjoyed what I got to look forward to. Thank you
Great video as always Warren! I’ve been using a Scarlett 2i2 for about 10 years now and I’m saving up for an Apogee Symphony Desktop. But having watched your videos for a few years, I know room acoustics are more important. I’m moving house next week and for the first time I’m finally going to have a dedicated room for recording and mixing! So it’s finally time to buy some bass traps, acoustic panels, and maybe a symphony desktop if I have some money left over 😊

Yes! Katie has an amazing voice!
That’s so funny cause Warren told me to raise the key to get that falsetto hahahaha good thinking Warren!
@@katieferraraofficial you’re very kind!
Katie sounds a bit like Natalie Merchant to me. Great vocals. Great Peter Gabriel solo song.
@@DerekBolli yes, wonderful song! We love Katie’s voice!
This girls voice is pure heaven. Awesome track and immaculate guitar playing. Props to the drummer also, his brush play was absolutely sublime! I think I’ll be checking a whole lot more of her stuff. Great find, cheers Warren 🥂
Thanks ever so much Andrew!!
What a great vocal, both the vocalist and the recording that really picks up such nice detail.
Maybe that’s in their future?
I have always loved that Peter Gabriel song. Katie's rendition is beautiful. The 276 gives a light lovely warmth to whole the song.
Sounds really good! The vocal sounds very intimate; the acoustic guitar, clear and smooth.
Thank you as always!
Thanks ever so much!
I’ve been using an Apogee Duet iOS & Mac for years. I’m very happy with it, but this got me intrigued.
Great version of one of my favorite songs ever! Thanks for doing this one. I'll he mixing this one. Maybe have Linda sing on it as well.
Fantastic Andy! Look forward to hearing it
wow, that song is so beautiful and so well recorded..
Keep them coming and thank you.
outstanding version of this song!!!!!
Thanks ever so much!
I have been waiting for UAD to make an inexpensive interface for quite some time now. I think they have nailed it with this one!
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks!
That’s a fantastic consequence!!
The interface looks so clean!
It’s pretty wonderful
I love my Volt 276 mainly for recording bass directly into the Volt or through a variety of other paths including a DI and an EV RE320 mic on a cab.
The best channel on youtube ✨
You’re very kind!!
Warren, those are analog FET compression circuits in there! I like the output meter. Some interfaces don't have that.
Wow! That's fantastic to hear!
I love the way companies will push the technology forward for the cleanest noise free pre's and yet will still roll back to the vintage musical sounds. This interface sounds great.
Sounds AMAZING. She can sing yall!! Dang!!!
Thanks! Yes, Katie is amazing
Ha Ha.
Fantastic! Thanks ever so much for sharing! I really appreciate it
Great video.
Agreed 100% Lee!
Universal Audio should be so proud!
What a voice! Beautiful!
Thanks ever so much! Yes, we love Katie’s voice!
Warren, excellent example of using low cost equipment to produce a wonderful performance. Thanks to all. ps. You had me at wood sides.
Thanks ever so much Martin!
Do you still recommend the sono? What about for doing guitar and vocals?
Such a beautiful performance, you guys! This affordable, portable device delivered great sound and it didn't get in the way of the creative moment which is where I think it really shines. I imagine UA had that in mind and based on what I see and hear, they hit it out of the park!
What a beautiful beautiful song, I am primarily a hip hop artist and budding producer. But I loved this song.
I gotta say those drums sound killer, great job!
I've just bought one of these so glad to hear you like it - thanks for the great review. Can't wait for it to arrive!
Great song!!!! One of my favorites. She nailed it. I would buy this if it was released today.
Great review, great performances, and great product demo! I’ll admit I really underestimated this interface, I’ve been looking for a portable USB interface and this just moved near the top of the list, thanks Warren!
Thanks ever so much! Glad to be able to help
I pre-ordered the the 4in/4out and look forward to getting my hands on it and running some rack gear through it.
I got the 476. Pair a e906 and a 57 on a 65 deluxe. Fantastic guitar tones
Thanks ever so much for sharing
I think this might be my next interface! Thanks for the review, I'm using right now a 1st gen focusrite scarlett 2i2
Marvellous!!
I just ordered this Volt 267 from Thomann.
I cant wait to use the built in comp.
I LOVE recording with the 1176 plug-in. But having it IN, is a no brainer for me.
Best regards
Thank you so much for this video, it really made my decision even easier,
My forusrite Scarlett is going out. This is going in :)
Great video, great sound quality and the song is just vey beautiful, greetings from Germany!
Thanks ever so much
Super excited to see this! :D
Definitely going to try out your bass guitar trick!
As always, thanks Warren!
Thanks ever so much! Glad to be able to help
Cheers!
Hah! Im waiting for Julian too. He’s gonna love the shout out.
I love what Julian does!!
Thanks for taking the time to record with this. I think the 476 almost works for my B studio. However the Mic inputs being on the front (instead of the back) might blow it for this particular setup. :^(
Thanks ever so much!
Gives a lovely warm feeling and vibe to vocal and guitar appreciated the video thanks
Thanks ever so much
This is exactly the type of video I needed for this product. Bravo!
Best producer channel
what a voice great rendition !!
Thanks ever so much
Cheers!
You're the first vid I watched on this....very informative review
Thanks ever so much
@@Producelikeapro Thank you!!
What a lovely cover
Thanks ever so much
First things first, great song! And your cover!
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate your great comment!
So it’s finally time to buy some bass traps, acoustic panels, and maybe a symphony desktop if I have some money left over 😊
I’m a bass player and the UAD Arrow does the job nicely.
