    5-pin MIDI is a must for people who are playing electronic music live with a number of different modules/synths. Having 5-pin MIDI on board is a major selling point for me, (one less box to bring to a gig) and one reason i’ll be picking up this interface.

    I enjoy that UA is giving people tools to MAKE music and not learn mixing too much. Back in the day we used such minimal gear from just Tube amps, slow compressors and Noisy Eqs and with this harmonic content it will change how the musician hears themselves.

  • @tonygunz21

    Over the years, i’ve owned alot of the entry-level/budget interfaces to use as my mobile setup when i’m travelling. I’ve owned the scarlet, audient id44, audient evo, ssl2+, and motu m2, and after hearing this demo, I’d 100% recommend the Motu out of all at this price point. Although the analog circuitry of the compressor and vintage function may seem cool, I see it more as a gimmick, similar to the 4k button on the SSL interface. There are free plugins and stock DAW plugins that are far more flexible and sound better at compression and thre “vintage” sound. If you like the sound of the interface, go for it, but dont be suckered into buying it on the vintage mode or compressor. The software bundle it comes with will get you further than those. Aim for an interface that gives you the amount if ins/outs you need, has enough good-clean preamp gain, good latency/direct monitoring, and enough juice for your monitor and headphones. I’ve been buying gear for the better part of 20 years……Dont get reeled in by the ginmicks. Just my $.02

    • @j.reveille6815

      And which compressor should I buy for the Moto or any other without software compressor?

    • @tonygunz21
      @tonygunz21 2 роки тому +7

      @@DieTabbi If you absolutely want a hardware compressor, there's a ton of options, even inexpensive ones like the FMR RNC go a long way. But honestly, there are a ton of free plugins that get the job done quite nicely, even the stock ones in most DAWs perform pretty well. It's just my opinion that a compressor circuit added to an entry-level interface is not a selling point that would make me pay more over comparable interfaces. I'd rather buy an interface that performs equally as well in the primary duties of an interface, for less money, and use a free software compressor or either buy a dedicated hardware comp. I have a lot of gear in my home studio (not much that's considered budget or entry level), so I'm not trying to bash this interface, just giving my opinion since I've been down the road of getting caught up in gimmicks or hype when I was first getting into pro audio equipment.

    • @DieTabbi
      @DieTabbi 2 роки тому +1

      @@tonygunz21 thank you for your kind explanation. I am new to all this stuff. I want to replace my GoXLR mini for a descent audio interface. I have a XLR and headphone planar magnetic and 250Ohm which needs more power then the GoXLR has. I don‘t know software compressors, that why I asked for suggestion.

    • @tonygunz21
      @tonygunz21 2 роки тому +1

      @@DieTabbi Sure thing, no problem. I haven't used this UAD, but I see they offer a cheaper version without the compressor circuit. That may not be a bad option, but I still can recommend the Motu overall. It has all the features I needed, sounds good, and is built very solid. The SSL2+ checked pretty much all of those same boxes, but didn't have enough juice in the headphone amplifier, which was a dealbreaker. The Audient ID14 mkii is also likely one of the best contenders in the sub $300 price point. I've had the ID44 a while back and really liked it, just wanted to try other things out. I liked the Audient Evo as well, but it felt like a toy, and not having separate knobs for different controls wasn't the best for me. For what it is, it was pretty cool though, and very small so easy to take wherever. Try downloading a free LA2A style compressor to learn. That's probably the easiest style of compressor to use, just two knobs.

I also was hoping for a LUNA Lite..even an iOS version for easy import/export into LUNA desktop. How awesome would it be to capture ideas on the go..easily open the iOS file on the desktop/laptop and build out a real version of the song using the initial ideas captured on the iPad?

    Oh… so you need to LOWER the master level output to balance the monitoring of what you are playing… I wasn’t sure how that worked. Hmmmm…. This is a strange missing feature that’s tripping me up a bit. I wonder I’d this will be annoying… my old interface has the blend knob and not sure I can live without it. Great info!! Actually the midi was the selling point on this for me, as I do have midi devices and my only other soundcard that has midi is the no longer supported soundblaster extigy that I am trying to get working again. While I do have usb to midi adapter having a direct midi interface I can use with midi cables allows me to differentiate devices really this is only about a $30 value but that is still $30 of added value. The onboard compression and vintage is probably another $50 value although practically a lot of stuff is done post processing but I think for living recordings - ie streaming this then actually may allow people to give a little something extra to their sound although again vsts do allow this -- there it is though UA also has their VSTs that they include with this so if you buy vsts that is probably another $50+ of value so for 176 for instance you are about $130 ontop of a $100 soundcard and that is more or less where you are at, the wood and metal appearance on it is nice if you like the vintage look. I am someone who likes old vintage lightbulbs and wood and metal so the overall apperance is nice. While I 100% agree getting high end DSP on this with actual benefit overonboard vsts this would be a great addition like some type of analog modeling - or even just what you get with an old keyboard like echo, reverb, delay, distortion etc.. digitally provided through an interface to turn it into a preamp processor. Like my old gem wk6 keyboard has effects processor built in and it is from 1997 while it has the option for a vocal processor also. You would think you can get that into a low cost chip - you can basically fit an amiga computer on a computer chip these days so adding a lot of extra power into a input interface you would think would be low cost and routine. All that said I look forward to checking out the volt 176 I got. The apollo stuff is way out of range for most starting musicians who are looking for a cheap daw, $1000+ buyin point for a daw would be offputing since a lot of people probably pirate their first DAW anyway until they comit to buying it. It clear that the idea of this product is to provide an interface for people to use Ableton then perhaps have them switch up to Luna if their experience with UA and its plugins are well received so it comes off as a starter product, at a relatively entry level price - imo its a classy option with the "recording artist" concept tied into the classic dreamy past of recording studios. UA offers an overall package their product in any individual part does not stand out but when you combine it it offers on overalll good value for money for people getting into making music and want an interface to start recording live sound. None the less good video if anything this peaked my interest in Luna but I am basically married to FL Studio, and am a "low end" hobbiest. Still this product looks nice, literally.

Considering UA is trying to fill the gap in the lower priced audio interfaces, esp still being usb 2.0, I don't see the need for these interfaces. If I become more serious with recording, id def upgrade to the higher end UA interfaces (arrow, apollo). These Volt devices are all USB 2.0 - that was an immediate killer for me. No idea why they made this decision, as most other interfaces in this price point support 3.0. Making the USB connection a 2.0 was not a forward-thinking / future proofing decision, and will provide longer latency times all around, unless I'm mistaken. I was considering the 276, but not with a USB 2.0 connection. would love to hear your thoughts on this!

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  2 роки тому +3

      I haven’t read anything to say that it doesn’t support USB 3.0 (in terms of power and data transfer), they are fitted with USB-C ports so they should support 3.0. The USB 2.0 “and above” reference on the website indicates it can be powered by type 2.0 supporting devices onwards, offering compatibility with pre-2016 devices. I know they had a lot of backlash with the Solo because it ONLY supported USB-C/3.0 because of its power requirements which isolated A LOT of users on older computers (inc my 2015 Mac at the time).
      I suspect the USB-C to A cable might be to keep costs down. Most manufacturers are supplying C-C cables with a C-A adaptor though, which would have been my suggestion.

    • @KevinDubois
      @KevinDubois 2 роки тому +4

      @@EdThorne Thanks for your reply - on the specs sheet you linked in your description, it states "One USB 2.0 port (USB Type-C connector)" Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but this means it is only capable of USB 2.0 speeds. Sure, it has a USB C port and is able to be plugged into USB 3.0 ports (as all USB 2.0 cables are), but it will not be capable of USB 3.0 speeds. This is a let down in 2021, and unfortunately if I'm dropping money for a new interface I want to make sure its latency is as low as possible, and I can opt for other interfaces to achieve this. Regardless, thank you for your research and analysis on this interface, your videos are super helpful :)

If I could have got the same A to D conversion (if it is in the Volt?) and the good preamp and compressor in the Volt, I would have just kept the focusrite skipped the 24c and Apollo solo and spent the extra money on a faster computer. The DSP you get with the Solo isn't enough to really do much more than if you just had a faster computer, in my experience. Their plugins are great; but not the only great ones around.

I didn't realize that most modern computers can already handle recording in through a couple of plugins already. Which, as you mentioned, with one chip, is all you are gonna get anyway.

      Hi there, and thanks. I’ll be honest I didn’t like the NI when I reviewed it 2.5yrs ago. Volt is definitely one of the best sounding in this price range. I’d suggest getting a designated stereo compressor for mastering, it’s unlikely you’ll match the gains exactly on two individual preamps, and you may introduce phase shifting if their EQ curve isn’t identical. I’d also avoid anything Behringer, personally. Check out the Warm Audio Bus Comp, that’s great for the money.

    I only listened on my phone.. but I found the vintage and compressor settings a bit harsh. I tend to trim 4-6K on vocals and guitars as this is always the ear biting harsh area for me..where everything builds up...guitars vocs Amd drums/cymbals. So I'm not sure I might be inclined to just use the clean setting to let it sit back in the mix more. Add vintage plugins I can tweak after the fact. I was hoping they would be the selling point on this interface for me but now I'm not sure. Great review thanks

    Thanks for the demo! Where did you find the information for the compressor preset timings? I haven't found those numbers anywhere

    How does this compare to a Focusrite Clarett+ 4Pre?

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  Рік тому +1

      I’d say the Clarett+ has better converters and maybe preamps but the Volt probably has a better Headphone amp (plus the compressor and Vintage mode features).

    I’m new to audio interfaces. I have no idea what converters are or any of that stuff. I just want a high quality audio interface that won’t let me down and $1000 and under is my budget. What should I get?

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  2 роки тому

      Hi there. The converters are the processing chips that turn an analog signal (a voltage created by the pressure of sound waves hitting a microphone capsule) into a digital signal (a series of binary code) that your computer can process. They’re often referred to as ADC (Analog to Digital Conversion), or DAC (Digital to Analog Conversion).
      Regarding which interface, it depends how many inputs you need, and whether you want to process your input monitoring with no latency or not?

    1. volt 276
    2. SSL2+
    3. PreSonus Studio 24c
    4. Komplete Audio
    Which one is better?

      Actually the Motu M2/M4 deserves the 3rd place, the second one would he for Audient id 14 mkii

      I hated the NI Komplete Audio, woeful interface. I don’t like Presonus stuff either (stepped gain pots is retarded). The SSL is good but personally I’d go with the Volt any day out of this list. Or as Oscar says, the iD14mkii!

      @@EdThorne i do have the Volt 276 and minifuse 1
      I can say without a doubt
      Volt is a winner, probably it doesnt have the best "Specs" but it works as it should, and has a pretty natural color, i can say it sounds "analog" and pretty warm.
      Definitely i like it more than my previous motu m4

      @@oscarestrada2545 Let me tell you that the Motu M4 is way better than the Volt, just to point something, the converters of the Motu (ESS Sabre32) are used on expensive interfaces and the converters on the Volt are the same that Arturia use on the Minifuse (Cirrus Logic CS4272) the only thing is that UA charge you more money.
      The M4 destroys the Volt and many more interfaces.
