    Wow Dave, thank you for this video!! I'm not even in the market for the a9 at all, and this video still had a ton of great information in it. The a6500 is making me so happy it's crazy, and this video definitely established that for me I'm still good with it.
    The colors I get out of it have been great too, and that is coming from an 80D... I kind of think maybe I prefer the a6500 colors. S-Log2 is a TREAT!!

    Great video Dave! A few questions if you don't mind...the timing on this video is great. We're about to shoot a short next week (7 day shoot). I have extensive experience with the A7s. However, we plan to shoot this short in 4k so I was going to use my A7Rii for that. We'll be mostly using the 24-70 GM lens with the occasional 28 f2 lens on steadicam. And possibly a handful of shots with the 70-200 f4 and maybe one or two with the 55mm 1.8. All full frame lenses that I own. FYI: We do not plan to shoot in log. Most scenes are outdoors during the day so not much low light stuff. Based on my experience with shooting with the a7s every week for years, I rarely use MF except to lock in a subject when face detection does it's job. I often use a combination of center-lock AF and face detection to grab my subject, then hold them in MF. I've got good at that with years of practice. My questions...
    1) I'm was debating renting the A9 for the week after watching this video. Rental costs would be around $400 so I have to decide if it's "worth it". I'm debating renting the A7sII as well (the a6500 is tempting but probably not cuz it's a crop camera.) Nothing is off the table though. Does the A7sII have the same noise "issues" as the a7Rii when shooting in FF mode at 4k? Sounds like the a9 does not from watching this video.
    2) Does the a6500 have the ability to set a custom button to switch between FF and Crop mode? I wish any of the A7 series had that option.
    3) Given what I've mentioned above, what would you do? What order would you rank these cameras for a 4k short using FF lenses ...A9, A7RII, a6500, A7SII?
    Thanks!

    When doing the video of someone swimming toward you, what focus settings did you use other than AF-C? I have run into issues with not knowing with focus area mode to use (wide, zone, expand flexible shot, etc..). I also don't understand why it disables the option for using the lock-on AF expandable shot when you want to shoot video. Considering that is the only time I would see myself using that focus mode. Any answers would be greatly appreciated!!

    You have to compare the A7rII against the A99mk2 for video. The 42mp sensor is very capable but it appears that Sony did not release its full potential in the A7rII.

    Were you using the fe 70-200 f4 to do this review or the f2.8 GM lens?

    Great review Doug! The ability to shoot FF or crop video with no significant quality loss is huge. With two 28mm and 55mm f/1.4 primes you could shoot just about anything in any light. And the Sony 28-135mm cine lens suddenly become even more versatile. I’m glad Sony didn’t include S-Log, or I’d really be wanting the a9.

      Hey Dave! Thanks for taking the time to reply. I was going to say you are an outstanding colorist if you had managed to get your log footage to look like that (and it would be pretty silly to be using log footage for a youtube demonstration channel anyway). I just asked because you counted it as a tick against the a9, but for the majority of what people in this range of camera are doing (and especially for a channel like this) log is way overkill. Put another way, unless people are actually experienced graders and can take the time to fully utilize log footage properly, they shouldn't be shooting it in the first place. Save it for the high end cinema cameras; I think it's actually a strength of the a9 and not a weakness. Tired of seeing milky, washed out footage on the internet.

    What are your thoughts on the build quality? I've beaten my Nikon D4 around and it has held up fantastically, wheres my A7sII has shown a good amount of wear on the body in comparison and I have scratch the plastic LCD screen. That reminded me of why Nikon and Canon put glass on their screens.

    Great video Dave! People have been saying that their color has been getting better with every release. I had the first gen A7 and skin tones were horrible. I switched to Fuji solely because of that. I will come back if they their color to be more like Canon or Fuji cause they make great cameras from a technical aspect.

    • @Rationalific
      @Rationalific 7 років тому

      +Ryan Reyes: I agree that Sony JPEG skintones traditionally haven't been the best (as they are a bit too blue and not saturated enough, usually). I don't know if this is something you already knew or not, or whether it would help you in the future, but if you don't want to tweak using RAW, you can do a "white balance fine tuning adjustment", which will adjust the white balance of any setting (daylight, cloudy, tungsten, etc). So if "daylight" is always too cold a look for you, you can manually warm it up. The following link shows how:
      blog.thomasfitzgeraldphotography.com/blog/2016/5/how-to-adjust-the-default-white-balance-on-the-sony-a6000
      Still probably not as good as getting JPEGs perfect without any adjustment (and I don't know if adjustment of skintones to your liking would make any other colors worse to you) but it's worth a try if you use Sony cameras again.

    Hi Dave. I really appreciate your video evaluations and testings of the various Sony Alpha Series Cameras. I would like to propose a theory as to why you are seeing these *peculiarities* and *variations* in sharpness, exposure, and color saturation from camera to camera. - I think your tests are revealing the degree *to which the image from these camera's lenses and sensors are being"cooked," and corrected by various algorithms in the hardware internal processors within these cameras.* Both Sony and Canon employ a very high degree of *electronic correction* to get an end resulting image which is pleasing to the eye. I think the overall images coming off of these sensors is allot more dirty than we realize it is, and *the image processing chips are "handling the many deviations and discrepancies" which are in the RAW image.* I suspect even the RAW images from the sensor are not as "RAW" as one might think they are (??) Canon, in their amazing 8 Bit Cinema Hybrid DSLR *The Canon EOS 1 D C,* utilizes two *Digic 5 Processors* to process the image - *The company even brags about doing this in their advertising on all their Cinema EOS Line of cameras.* I would suspect a similar approach is being taken by Sony.

    Great review as always Dave. To me the A9 is aimed more at stills shooters and they've kinda crippled the video with no SLOG. Nothing really beats a dedicated video camera anyway, but for hybrid shooters I think you're 100% right - the A6500 is a better option at the moment (except for audio). I would certainly expect the A6500 to have more detail that the A9 in crop mode (more pixels) did you have sharpening turned off in both cameras?

    • @DaveDugdaleColorado

  • @panmaew
    @panmaew 7 років тому +1

    Dave, I think the most obvious downside of this A9 (and other similar form factor cameras) for shooting video is what you clearly demonstrate in the whole latter part of your video. The poor matching of a still camera with such a small, and short, body with ANY large lens. This is one of the reasons why the big gun DSLRs with an extended battery pack built into the bottom part to allow more gripping area almost always provide better handling ergonomics for video. For extended shooting sessions, this is extremely important. For me this shortcoming is one of the main reasons why I still stick to camcorders or interchangeable lens cinema cameras after all these years.
    This aside, another great review and very informative. Keep it up.

      Pan CM I own an FS7 and an a6300 & BMPCC, and more often than not the small form factor is preferred. I like shooting in real environments and on the fly without the bulk of a camcorder and the attention it brings. If you’re in a studio or shooting ENG style, then of course a shoulder camera is going to be the best bet. I have to say, though, that the a7sII with the Sony cinema 28-135mm lens might be the most convenient, versatile and underrated video setups out there. Cheers.

    • @daltonrandall4348
      @daltonrandall4348 6 років тому

      Tyler Breeden Well, can’t have it both ways. Personally, I’m with Pan CM on this one. For professional, cinema-style video, I vastly prefer the robust and balanced form factor of something like the FS7 to an a9. I can’t really think of a scenario in which I would prefer an a9 style body for shooting video unless like you say you need something more low profile - which tells me you’re trying to shoot somewhere you shouldn’t be.

    Well, noise is proportional to the absolute temperature (Kelvin), when it is around the room temperature at 27C (~80F) it is at 300K, when it heats up to 57C (~135F) it is at 330K. 10% noise is really negligible especially after you convert it into log2 scale which photo/videographers use.

    I wonder why they don't give users complete control over the auto focus system, since most modern auto focus systems can process the image data faster than the lens can physically move the focus element, they should add a slider where you can have a slow smooth focus pull, or a mode where it is going as fast as the lens will physically allow.

    wow the effect of resolution playback/scaling to fit screen on aliasing is ENORMOUS - on my 14"720p laptop i i playback the youtube video at 1080p it is the aps-c mode that has aliasing and the ff has none but if i playback at 1440p it is the full frame mode that have aliasing and the sps-c mode no longer has aliasing. ( i usually plyback at 1440p because eventhough it is scaled down to 720p by my gpu to fit my screen resolution , the 1440p youtube stream has a higher bitrate than the 720p youtube stream so i get better image this way. 2160p playback is horrible my intel gpu just don't have enough power to scale down correctly 2160p to 720p in real time, it must switch to pixel skipping blend mode.

    For $4500 USD camera that overheated during your test, Dave, I think this is not acceptable coming from Sony. It is meant to be a professional sport camera and overheating in 20mins and at 80's degree?! Wow, that's like selling us a beta camera for $4500. Who in their right mind would buy it? I have a6500 & a7rii & Phantom P4 Pro and will be holding onto them for awhile. I will be waiting for when Sony releases a camera under $4000 with all the specs of a7sii (night king), a7rii (mega pixel king) and a6500 (super speed prince) combined together AND has 4k 60fps with 1080p 240fps AND no overheating issue AND minimal rolling shutter. That would be a killer camera. That will be my next upgrade. Don't think it's possible? Look at Panasonic new camera GH5 (4k 60fps & FHD 180fps) and DJI Phantom 4 Pro camera drone (4k 60fps) and you will see this camera technology that I wanted is POSSIBLE. My prediction will be DJI with Hasseblad partnership not Sony that will be releasing this technology. The only problem is that it maybe M43 sensor and the low light will not be as good as a7sii. Mark my words. Sipski

    Biggest No for me at the moment is the Lens Lineup :( on the Hardware side the Camera is an awesome tool for Sports Photography but there are no 300 2.8 and 400 2.8 lenses as well as the beloved 100-400 with builtin Teleconverter that Canon does provide. And yes there is the ability to adapt lenses but then the Autofocus gets way to slow even with the expensive adapters to keep track with wide open apertures. So i'll stick to Canon until there is a real lineup of lenses that are useable and maybe Canon can manage to get a Camera hardware to the market in the same time that does provide the same features without the hassle to sell all my Lenses.
    Yes hardware wise Sony is a big lead ahead but Canon and Nikon has time to develop something similar until Sony manages to release some Lenses that would make these to companies Obsolete.
    Still an interesting race between the manufacturers that has not been won by any of them.

      That test is mostly for when people look away from the camera and you lose their eyes, perhaps they look down at notes, it has happened to me a lot actually.

    Your tests are no good if you're not going to mention if you use the same or different lenses on each camera, detailed profile settings, (like amount of sharpening), how you metered the scene, etc.

      I've heard this was great in low light, I think you need to turn on CDAF (or have auto switch from PDAF to CDAF on) and use a native lens faster than f/2 though.

    Man, I cannot wait until the A7rIII or A9r comes out. Does anybody know where I can find information about tethering with the ethernet port. I have searched everywhere and cannot find anything. Amazing they stuck a crappy out dated micro usb 2.0 once again on their camera. Sony better put a USB 3.0 at least on their next model or it is bye bye Sony. What makes you think the "S" will come out first? I believe the A7III or an "r" version will be first.

      USB 3 is useful only when tethering.

    I disagree. A9 is worth every pricetag that it has. I own Canon 1DX M2, Nikon D5 and A9. Both great cameras, but A9 is more conventional and takes photos just as good as my 1DXM2. In terms of video, A9 is superior shooting content at fullframe 4k res. I think for the pricetag it offers, and the way it competes with my 1dxm2, its a reasonable asking price. as for video, maybe you just don't know how to use ther camera properly?

      @DaveDugdaleColorado  6 років тому

      +Philip Lee I don't recall saying it was not worth the price tag for everyone, just me. I'll wait for the next camera.

      oh i know. but for the specs, i think its a reasonable asking price. my 1dxm2 was in 8000 dollar range CDN when i got it. my a9 was 2000 dollars cheaper than the 1dxm2. so i think for people who are waiting for a camera that can compete with 1dxm2, a9 for the price is not a bad offer at all. when it is video recording performance, a9 is far superior than my 1dxm2. for photos, 1dxm2 does the job slightly better, but a9 has faster reaction time and better autofocus system. its a hard pick.

      I think when you compare this camera to Nikon and Canon's $6000 cameras, it is a good deal.
