I like the detail that the fire alone doesn’t kill anyone, they have to actually scorch someone to eliminate them. Brutal yet realistic
and like in the anime even 1 fire ball shot is as strong as one solid punch it could knock you down since it s pure chi and not simply flames thrown at people
Yeah it's like a fiery punch basically. Its not like say a flamethrower in real life. It's like magical martial arts. They can firebend non-lethally, and they can do so lethally based on the sheer force.
That shows care and effort put into this
That's the scariest thing about dying by fire, the heat and burns don't kill you, the lack of oxygen from the smoke does.
Alll of it combined kills you, but I get your point
The fight between Sozin and Gyasto hit hard for me when I remembered they were both close friends with Roku.

2:02 Your own element can be used against you because the air expands the fire and increases it. Against a powerful firebender, becoming engulfed in a tornado of air is a death sentence.
If an air bender is stronge enough to control the air inside the fire he would practically ban fire bending from their enemies
@ryogahibiki7806
He could allow for the fire to loose oxygen but... I dunno, would take a lot of effort
@@ryogahibiki7806 yes, but in this case it was the opposite with Sozin using the wind to increase the power of his flames around that teacher.
The case of a powerful airbender may be Gyatzo, he was sucking the air on those firebenders and was suffocating them, but Sozin's fire that he covered himself with protected him until his power surpassed that of the airbender.
@@thalmoragent9344 yeah, that why it would have to be a very strong air bender
Sozin actually always had the upper hand cause they have the power of the comet
I used to think aang was to blame for the loss of the air nomads, but after watching this scene at his point he definitely would've died as well
Definitely, given his young age and inexperience, he would've died as well which is why Sozin was confident in this ambush.
Even with Energy Bending, unless Aang is willing to fight Sozin to KILL he would´ve lost, because Energy Bending has the risk of failing and damaging Aang´s spirit in the process (similar to when Azula struck him with lightning while he was in the avatar state). while Sozin 100% believes he´s right in his genocidal actions and unlike Ozai he wasnt propagandized to it, he straight up came to that conclusion on his own, this makes him way more dangerous to attempt to debend that way.
Y peor habría muerto en estado avatar acabando con la reencarnación
They also had the commit fire benders were unstoppable
@@romanporter6049 even with the night time nerf they truly were unstoppable in this scene, the only way to prevent the air nomad genocide would be to have them run while aang in the avatar state fought off the fire nation however this would lead to the end of the avatar cycle, because even the avatar wouldnt win a fight against so many comet enhanced fire benders.

I love the detail that Sozin's bending sounds like a dragon, as he was the one who started hunting the dragons. In close-up shots you can also see that his eyes look like those of a dragon, when he bends fire with a lot of rage or hatred.
Seemed like he became one with the comet or something, dude using the Comet´s power to increase his longevity.

@@sebas8225 Well... He actually had a younger Sister, Zeisan, but she was a non-bender but could do Chi-blocking like Ty Lee. Her and Sozin were like Azula and Zuko but the other way around. She learnt Air-nomad philosophy and worked against her brother. She revoked her right for the throne though.

2:24 For those who haven't noticed, Gyatzo faced that entire platoon of firebenders and in his need to protect the children he sucked the air around him, killing those soldiers since they aren't moving.
2:33 Sozin also fell victim to that deadly technique, but he held his breath longer and counterattacked, making Gyatzo lose his stance and then cornered him.
The reason for the airbender's defeat is because his air shield did not put out the fire, it only held it back and the air expanded it around him because Sozin did not stop attacking, finally it was too much and the flames enveloped him like that airbender. which created a tornado around her only for Sozin to engulf her in fire.
Whoa.
Look closely lol they were moving 🤣🤣
@@Bluebeetle1824 some move, but the rest are dead. If Sozin hadn't appeared, Gyatzo would have suffocated them. He actually does it because he is absorbing the air around him and it is noticeable when the fire that covers Sozin goes out due to the lack of oxygen around him, but his power was superior to breaking the Monk posture.
Why can't the airbenders just bend the air inside their opponent's lungs and explode them from the inside?
@@InsertTheCoin1997 considering how small the nostrils are, it'd probably take a lotta power and precision or something. Not something you even attempt in the heat if battle

Yeah Sozin would´ve slaughtered Aang if he had found him during that day, Sozin unlike Ozai and Azula wasnt even Evil because the norms were evil, he was Evil when the norms were good case he thought himself and his nation as naturally superior to the others, clearly a different bred of evil altogether, Aang would 100% fail to take Sozin´s bending away with energy bending and get himself killed if he tried.
I have to say, even though many people compare this to the infamous "order 66", this scene was way more brutal.
Na order 66 hurts more
@JohnG44 hurts more? I don't know, being burned to death is slow and painful compared to getting shot by clones.
@syzorst blaster fire burns as well.
@@JohnG44 True, but being scorched to death probably hurts more than tissue instantly being burned away

I like how sozin said in this live series that "on any other day you would win, but not today." I think people underestimate air cause their pacifists and they were essentially wiped out in the story line but sozin had to wait to ambush them and needed the help of the comet to ensure a win over them.
Now this is epic! Sozin is really an underrated character back then, we never saw him in action. Now he is one of my favorites.
In the cartoon he use to best Roku in fire bending when they were teenagers.
@@syzorsttree root did all the work
@kridens6536 It was Roku's fault for not paying attention to his surroundings. Something Sozin took advantage of.
Which is why Zaheer is a hero to all airbending fans. Air may have no variants like sand, metal, lava, blood and lightning but he showed that air alone is powerful enough when you reject pacifism. I once wished back in the original series that Aang should've met a surviving airbender that went mad.
Airbending has the Spirit variant. It's based on real world philosophy - ancient romans believed in 'pneuma' or 'breath of life.' That concept is where words like pneumatic machinery comes from, machines that animate through air power. In the Bending universe, some rare airbenders can manipulate a person's spirit but it's on the same level of taboo as bloodbending.

Them Air Masters were no jokes, one could take on ten soldiers, even when taken by surprise.
They put up one hell of a fight given the circumstances and the fact they had no army nor military training, and were faced against comet powered fire benders. On a regular night I doubt they would’ve even come close to winning against these masters.
This scene is truly heartbreaking to watch and is also sinister and creepy, as we finally get to see the brutality, heartlessness, and fanaticism that shaped Fire Lord Sozin.
The most F´ed up part is when he brings up the "night" part, as in the comet Amp was so powerful that night nerfed Firebenders were basically on enough to steroids to overwhelm anyother bender during the time very easily!
This scene was amazing! Though I wished that Gyatso fought sozin for a little longer and have a whole fight sequence but since Sozin’s Comet was there it made sense
Sozin flat out admitted that if this was any other night, he could've prevailed.

It took more than 3 firebenders to take down one airbender. That speaks volume!
Well you have to remember that the soldiers are just average fire benders fighting against masters. Notice Sozin (a master fire bender) had no problem taking out master Air benders.
@@syzorstwell tbh, Sozin also had the power from the comet enhancing his firebender while fighting the master airbenders.
@@jacobmiller2663 Yes but it took only one of him, without the boost it would've been a fair fight 1 on 1 with them and him.
@@syzorst Also they had the small but ultimately insignificant advantage of it being night time, if it was day time on Ozai´s reign´s comet day, it would´ve been way way easier for the firebenders.
The obly thing they missed is massacre of appas.. that would have made this scene 100% tragic...
So there is a difference between the cartoon and the live-action in that with the OG cartoon series Sozin wanted to ERASE the air benders and their culture along with killing the avatar (the sky bison could teach air bending, so they had to go as well). The live-action Sozin just wanted to kill the avatar (like even his general said there was no strategic reason for wasting the comet on the air nation)

Well this incident is called "The Air Nomad Genocide" for a reason.
The Netflix version proved that the world was lucky that the Airbenders were peace-loving nomads, because if they weren't they would have conquered the world. Airbending is so strong and versatile in the live-action series.
The Air nomads are not that strong to conquer the world dude. What makes the Fire Nation so powerful was not only the firebenders but they also had the strongest military. The Air Nomads are just monks. They do not have the military might or numbers for world domination.
@@syzorstSTRAIGHT UP 😊
@@syzorst However, Zaheer proved that if they wanted to, they could have gone far in terms of Lethality, they could have become the equivalent of the Tibetan Empire.
Woah. All-out. Of course they couldn't depict the genocide onscreen before but this is just whoa. The next level. Sozin said no survivors and they did it. Ended them all. As for holding back, they were close to each other so any giant house sized blasts would cause friendly fire and any distant blast plan would not kill as much Air Nomads. They had to get upclose and personal.
The crazier part is they did it during night time, where a Firebender is supposedly at their weakest, but the Comet Amp was enough to overwhelm.

But nonetheless i loved to see Sozin in Action!
Realistically it's impossible for a comet to get close enough to the surface to light up the sky and not get pulled in by the Earth's gravity and crash. And I think the firebenders had to restrain themselves a bit in order to not accidentally BBQ each other while fighting the Airbenders.

I don't know why but Order 66 from Star Wars just kept popping in my head as I saw this entire sequence, the massacre of the air benders just felt similar to the Jedi Purge.
Because both are genocides.
Note: original canon references say that some novice air temple monks escaped this chaos, some slipping away during the attack and some witnessing the attack and turning away from the temples because in the Lost adventure TPB ( dark horse/ Nickelodeon publishing ) Zhao admitted “ some monks did escape this attack “ also there were rouge monks who were noted in the 2005 AtlA quick strike TCG card set who assisted Sozin in his attacks ( via detailed information about the temples ie. layout etc. even as short as opening the front doors for his forces) lastly if you use series 2 canon it’s recessed genetics that after harmonic convergence that leads to future air bending resurgence, so this scene is not showing 100% of the facts , just the common perception that was noted back at the start of the series….Just saying is all …because I make sure to check all the facts.?!?
well yeah, it was impossible to take all the monks in one go, not only they are split in 4 temples around the world, many are living on other nations, Fire nations spend decades hunting the survivors, using traps and baits.
also a common theory is that many monks survive and go in hide, the "new airbenders" we meet in Korra are probable descendents of tose monks
@@rafaelsantos-nl9jd thanks for your understanding, it's good to know that some know about these things that have been officially peppered into the canon as hidden hints...thank you...
If I recall correctly, there is also a fan theory that Ty Lee is a descendant of Airbenders/Airbender Monks, since she shares many of the same traits as they do (free flowing, athletic, acrobatic, very friendly and approachable, etc)
It’s a bit of a stretch since it’s stated she comes from a noble family, but it isn’t impossible either.
This is without a doubt what I liked most about Live Action, that they will show how the airbenders fell but not without a fight.

could have been even better if there was a comet visible and its light all over the place. also, it's shown that gyatso went down without a chance but in the animation we saw that he took quite a lot firebenders with him without getting scorched suggesting that he used an air sucking forbidden technique. it would be cool if this scene or something similar was depicted.
He did it with those firebender, until Sozin show up and interupt, you can see those soldier all drop unconsousness
Yeah, it was a bummer, but I think they just wanted to show how evil Sozin really was (which I get because that creates a lineage to show how evil Azulon and then Ozai are.). Also the comet is visible
The show Shouldve shown gyazo sucking the air out of the room killing everyone but inside like the animated show suggested
He did it, look at the scene when he faces all those firebenders. Gyatzo was sucking the air to suffocate them (in fact those firebenders are dead), 2:28 but Sozin managed to hold his breath and cover himself with a blanket of fire and then break Gyatzo's stance.

I'm not even sure if your eyes work my guy.
Couldnt have Sozin killed those soldiers as collateral to guarantee Gyatzo and the kids died by cooking up everything in that room with his comet Amped flames? Seems like something a Evil Monster like Sozin would do rather than seeing Gyatzo kill people through suffocation, case he no Zaheer.
im glad that the airbenders held their own for some time at least
We only saw the Air Temples on fire and the aftermath in the cartoon. The live action series showed the Fire Nation attack on the Air Nomads in all of its glory.
What I like during this scene is that it alludes to the fact that Fire isn't purely based on someone's willpower alone; if you create a tornado, you are essentially GIVING a Firebender MORE AIR to IGNITE. Air can be ignited via oxygen, and a Firebender could easily do that with the spark from their finger, for example.
This is also why Firebenders and Airbenders specifially aren't that different, as they have to be more creative with their talents than Waterbenders or Earthbenders, since the latter two are more based on setting than skill alone.
This made me connect more to the pain of Ang than the anime or the movie back then did. Much more details. They made me realize how human the air masters were

Even if you don’t like this show, you have to admit that the fight scenes looked pretty cool
They really did incorporate proper martial art techniques. Air benders use the art of Baguazhang. None combative and disarming and mostly used to go behind and around the opponents instead of directly in front of them.

I like this because it shows how powerful the Air Nomads were. If they were given a notice and were ready to prepare I think they would have been able to fend off the Fire Nation.
No they wouldn't. Against comet enhanced firebenders, they had no chance even if they were prepared. Their only hope of survival was to escape before the attack began.

The genocide scene is very hard to watch and in the real world, it is still happening.
Interesting that they made Sozin participate the genocide when in the cartoon, he only said that he had the Air Nomads wiped out, not going into specific on whether or not he actually joined the slaughter. The fact that not only did he do it, but he was the one that personally killed Gyasto, a close friend of Roku, is mind blowing. Two of Roku’ greatest friend, and one of them killed both. I don’t think Sozin even knew of Roku’s friendship with Gyasto.
I don’t know if it’s the intention in both the original creators of the cartoon show and the new director of the live action for this to be canon in the cartoon show as well.
This was a pretty emotional scene for me. Growing up watching avatar, never thought I'd see the air temple destruction in live action like this and aangs teachers death
Thank you, may God bless you all and everyone. ❤
It’s amazing that despite the fire benders have a power boost from the comet the air benders where still able to put up one hell of a fight.
“Avatar is a kids show”
The cartoon was not nearly as graphic. I was so shocked watching this 😩
This gave me flashbacks to Order 66 from Star Wars
Yeah, funny how a bad show reminds you of a bad movie lol
I like that they showed even with the comet they needed to get almost every Air nomad in a 3:1 in order to Win. On another note though there seems to be no direct way for an Air Bender to Eliminate someone so even though the element itself is very capable of holding off or pushing back multiple opponents it seems futile when your enemy is knocking guys off the board left and right.
Finally! I was waiting for a long time to see some violence in ths show!
Yes I know it was intend to be U/ PG and they did get away with dark stuff but not violent like Jet death but it still bothers me! It's like having WW2 as the setting but never seeing any battles or a battles without guns?!
Say what you want about this series. Unlike the cartoon, this one shows the final moments and last stand of the airbenders. And it perfectly shows if Aang haven’t left his home, he would’ve died as well.
People still believe from the Ozai fight that Aang could´ve won this with the avatar state and spirit help, but nope he wouldnt have, Ozai fought him 1 on 1, Sozin came with a firebender army to gang up on him, all enhanced with the comet, there´s actually the risk that the past avatars hubris may have actually gotten Aang killed in the avatar state had he not run away as sozin would gladly sacrifice a few soldiers to guarantee Aang died.

@@ttschannel875 Wouldnt matter, because now there´s no Airbender master to teach air, even with Legend of Korra logic, any surviving waterbending avatar wouldnt have lived long enough for a chance to revive airbending as they would´ve to live hundreds of years, and without being able to use all 4 elements, the Avatar state doesnt work as intended, at best it´s a reckless force of nature, or at worse just a meditating sitting duck begging to be targetted with lightning.
So yeah Fire nation wouldnt need to bother after disposing of Aang with no airbenders left any avatar afterwards WILL NEVER MASTER THE AVATAR STATE and risks ending the cycle entirely by using it, or risking their own allies in wrath, by that point the Firelord can just wait for another comet to wipe out the water tribe then another to wipe out the earth nation and boom, world domination complete.
@@sebas8225 100 year is a long cooldown. By that time the spirit vine weapon already been discovered.metal bender also been well know. Blood bending? Maybe. Relaying on comet alone won't be enough.
That's why the need to win as soon as possible
@@ttschannel875 Now that I think about it, could a nonbender with the potential to airbend through harmonic convergence show up as the avatar down the line in that scenario? Like the firebender in the cycle finally dies and there are no airbenders to reincarnate into so a scenario like Harmonic convergence happens and a potential airbender nonbender just gets it unlocked and becomes avatar? Could be a interesting possibility actually.
2:52 - I love the music at the end of the air bender getting incinerated.
This had me in tears
Gotta admit that showing the Fall of the Air Nomads and how others died by Firebenders hands was a good touch, because it shows how merciless the Fire Nation is
Gyatso's last thoughts...
"Aang, wherever you are, our Avatar... You are the world's only hope between balance and the Fire Nation's dominance..."
I'm now a fan of Avatar. before I did watch the cartoons but It was childish a little bit, now I'm all grown up. This is more at my alley. Beautiful show! Way better than One Piece live IMO
great!
Aang in that episode in Fire Nation school: Is that a trick question? Air nation didn't have a formal army. Sozin beat them with an ambush. (Not exactly, but close enough)
And despite all that, they still fought hard and brave. They did not fall quietly and easily. They made Sozins pyromanic fashists actually put an effort. The battle might have been one-sided, but it wasn't easy.

No wonder The Airbender were extinct
Almost extinct, only Aang was the only human Airbender left.
No wonder they call The Last Airbender title
Nearly. Before Aang was found in the Southern Water Tribe. There were few others who were not in Temples. Only to be hunt down. Sozin planned and used airbending artefacts to lure survivors, and while others hid and let go of their airbending ways. Their culture and history were almost lost more than 100 years. That leaves Aang as the only human Airbender - who has not just skills but has knowledge about his people and culture.
Been frozen in Ice 100 years
@G1Grimlock94 Also, staying with his Avatar state in 100 years and that it drained his life force till he learned it at the age of 66 after the war. Till he accepted what happened to himself, and then he died peacefully.
"Question 1: What year did Fire Lord Sozin battle the Air Narion army?"
"Was that a trick question? The Air Nomads didn't have a formal military. Sozin defeated them by ambush"
Prove how strong airbenders is even though they lose and got massacre but still how they stand they're ground with the boosting power firebenders by the the sozin comic
Gotta give em credit they made the bending really cool
okay why don't I see anyone comment about the kids and gyatso, Gyatso sacrficed his life to protect those kids and succeeded but also failed when sozin came imagine what the kids felt knowing that this was their last time seeing each other and breathing
Those monks are quite strong and talented to contend with comet enhanced firebenders, even if each one lasted a few moments rather than instantly dying.
Sozin going full Anakin mode in the younglings ☠️
IT also shows how much of a fraud Ozai was, Sozin was HIM, in terms of EVIL
This pretty much reminded me of order 66 scenes from both revenge of the Sith and Obi-Wan Kenobi
This is the last Airbender not your order whatever crap. Stop the nonsense words
@@derekemi5963 Who put a bee in your underpants?
Notice at 2:00 sozin makes sure the guy is burnt to a crisp pretty brutal
The comet shouldve gave the scenes a red tint
0:45 aaaa-
The costumes in this are so well done! Too bad I can't stop thinking about that Sozin plastic helmet, why does it look so Party City?
Well last time I checked in the old show it was never shown that the Firebenders killed all the Airbenders all that we know about it is when Aang, Sokka and Katara went to The Southern Air Temple Sokka and Katara found an old Fire Nation helmet and Aang saw more helmets and Gyatso's skeleton! And when Aang was explaining his origins to Katara he said that after he left that's when the Fire Nation attacked the temple and his people needed him but he wasn't there! And when Zuko found the scroll explaining Fire Lord Sozin's origins the burning Air Temples were shown in a flashback! And it also said that Sozin attacked the Air Temples because after Roku died he knew that the next Avatar would be born an Air Nomad!
In great words from my man Vince McMahon to the monks bending farts at the Fire Nation "YOURE....FIRED!!!"
The comet expands the power of the firebenders, looking like they took steroids
